Back in the day, Nina Dobrev had to choose between Mystic Falls and 1920s Atlantic City. Yep, she was this close to joining HBO’s critically acclaimed Boardwalk Empire. The dealbreaker? A nudity clause that came with way too many question marks.
Dobrev spilled the tea during an interview for her Netflix flick The Out-Laws, and it’s a real “sliding doors” moment. “I wasn’t allowed to test for both The Vampire Diaries and Boardwalk Empire. And I didn’t know, like, how do you make a decision?” she revealed. Tough call, right? But the then-19-year-old wasn’t vibing with the Boardwalk Empire contract. “At some point, there might be nudity, and you’ll have to do it,” she remembered being told. Nope.
That clause was enough to nudge her toward the supernatural drama—and thank the vampire gods for that.

Fans of Nina Dobrev were shocked to learn that she almost turned down the role of Elena Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries in favor of a role on Boardwalk Empire. In a recent interview, Dobrev revealed the reasons behind her decision.
Dobrev explained that while she was a fan of Boardwalk Empire and was excited about the opportunity to work on the show, she ultimately chose The Vampire Diaries because she felt a stronger connection to the character of Elena and the overall storyline of the series.
“I loved the idea of playing a strong, independent young woman who was dealing with supernatural elements and complicated relationships,” Dobrev said. “The character of Elena just spoke to me in a way that the character on Boardwalk Empire didn’t.”
In the end, Dobrev’s decision paid off, as The Vampire Diaries went on to become a massive hit and launched her career to new heights. However, Dobrev has no regrets about her decision and is grateful for the opportunities that both shows have brought her.
