NOPD Announces Safety and Security Plans for New Year’s Festivities, Allstate Sugar Bowl Events

The NOPD today (December 30, 2024) released safety and security plans for citizens and visitors to the city regarding New Year’s festivities, as well as for the upcoming Allstate Sugar Bowl football game on January 1, 2025, and related events

During these events, the NOPD will be staffed at 100 percent, with an additional 300 officers assisting from partner law enforcement agencies.

“We encourage all of our residents and visitors attending the city’s iconic celebrations to celebrate safely and responsibly,” NOPD Superintendent Anne E. Kirkpatrick said.

The department is deploying resources at a level like other recent major events, such as the Taylor Swift concert. NOPD will work alongside local, state and federal partners to provide extensive security coverage across the city.

“Residents and visitors can expect to see a strong presence of marked and unmarked police vehicles, as well as officers on foot, bike, and horseback as part of the department’s Mounted Patrol,” Kirkpatrick said. “This increased visibility will enhance public safety, provide crowd control, and allow for rapid response to any incidents.”

The schedule of programs during this event is as follows:

  • The Allstate Sugar Bowl New Year’s Eve Parade will take place on December 31, 2024, beginning at 12:00 p.m. and concluding around 3:00 PM. The parade will form on the riverbound side of Elysian Fields Avenue between Burgundy and North Peters streets. From there, it will proceed down North Peters against the normal flow of traffic by the flood wall. At Dumaine Street, the parade will continue along Decatur Street following regular traffic patterns.
  • The New Year’s Eve Concert and Countdown will begin at 9:00 p.m. in Jackson Square, leading up to the ball drop and fireworks display at midnight.
  • The Allstate Sugar Bowl football game between the University of Georgia and Notre Dame University will take place on January 1, 2025, beginning at 7:25 p.m. at the Ceasar’s Superdome.
