Our snow forecast released for Sunday

MY 10 THOUGHTS ON SUNDAY’S SNOW:

This “snow map” is my hand-drawn snowfall total forecast. While this snow may be classified as a “Winter Storm” for Northern Virginia (snow amounts 4+”), this will be more of a “Winter Weather Advisory” type snow for Central and SW Virginia.

Southside Virginians might observe snow falling on Sunday, though little to no accumulation is expected. This includes the Danville area.

This map does not include Saturday morning—light snow will fall in/near mountains during the morning. Then, highs reach into the 40s, with 50 degrees within reach for Central and Southside Virginia. Enjoy the day!

Precipitation begins as rain on Sunday morning. As temperatures cool overhead throughout the morning and afternoon, rain gradually changes to snow.

You may observe several hours of snow in Lynchburg, Bedford, Roanoke and Farmville. I have accumulations at 1” or less. Some of you could get a little more if “banding” sets up

I’m uncertain how much sticks in Central and SW Virginia. I see the pavement ranging from wet to slick spots. I imagine I-81 from Lexington to Roanoke to Tennessee running slower than usual.

Road conditions will worsen west and north in the 1” to 3” range. Including the mountains around I-81 into SW Virginia, Roanoke, Bedford, Amherst and Nelson. Lower elevations will have less snow.

Snow on roads will increase along and north of a line from Covington to Lexington to Charlottesville to near/north of Richmond. This includes DC, Harrisonburg/Staunton and Hot Springs.

The snow stops Sunday night. Whatever snow is left on roads and yards won’t start melting until late next week.

After the snow ends, temperatures will remain below freezing all day for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs only reach the 30s.
