New England Patriots star quarterback Drake Maye is headed to the locker room in Week 17’s matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers after suffering a helmet-to-helmet hit early in the first quarter and going to the medical tent. He has been replaced at quarterback by Jacoby Brissett.

The rookie quarterback has already taken one injury to the head in the 2024 season. In Week 8, Maye suffered a concussion suffered a concussion after taking a hit from Jets safety Jamien Sherwood late in the first quarter.

As Maye finished an 18-yard scramble against New York, Sherwood came from behind and delivered a hard blow to the back of his helmet. Although Maye stayed in the game for a few more plays—including a first-down run, two handoffs (one negated by a penalty), a sack, and an incomplete pass on third down—he was later seen heading to the blue medical tent as the Patriots’ offense took the field.

After being evaluated, Maye left for the locker room and was eventually placed in concussion protocol. He was later cleared to play in Week 9’s 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
