Recently retired QB will sign with NFC North contender (report)

Teddy Bridgewater is coming out of retirement to return to the NFL.

The veteran quarterback is expected to sign with the Detroit Lions, NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reported on Thursday.

Bridgewater retired from the NFL at the age of 31 after the 2023 season with the plan to coach high school football. Bridgewater did just that and coached his former high school, Miami Northwestern, to a state championship in his first season at the helm.

He revealed to Rapoport and Tom Pelissero earlier this month that the plan was to come back to the NFL on a short-term basis.

“My team knows that’s the plan,” he said. “We wanted to win a state championship and then coach goes back to the league, see what happens, and then come back February in the offseason, continue coaching high school football. We’ll see how it plays out.”

Bridgewater spent the 2023 season with the Lions — who can clinch the NFC North division and the No. 1 seed in Week 17.

A 2014 first-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Bridgewater also spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos.

In 79 career games, Bridgewater went 33-32, threw for 15,120 yards, 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions.
