Rockets enjoy banter between Jalen Green, Denver’s Russell Westbrook
During his high-school days, Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green played on the AAU team of Denver Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook.
A nine-time NBA All-Star and former Most Valuable Player (MVP), the 36-year-old Westbrook is 14 years older than the 22-year-old Green.
Yet, despite that age gap and Westbrook’s legendary status, that didn’t keep Green from being a bit annoyed when Westbrook fouled him Wednesday on what would have been a transition dunk. Green wasn’t injured, but he appeared to take at least some exception to the play, which occurred in the second half of a blowout Houston victory.
Within seconds, however, Westbrook put his hand on Green’s chest, and both players appeared to share a laugh. Shortly after, Westbrook even had Ime Udoka laughing. As captured by television microphones, Westbrook said to Houston’s bench (of Green):
He used to play on my AAU team. Talking to me like I’m a little ass kid.
“We all know him, so he was talking to everybody,” Udoka said postgame. “We played with him, Jeff [Green] played with him, Steven [Adams] has played with him. We’ve coached against him for years. I think Jalen was complaining about the foul, and (Westbrook) said he played on his AAU team.”
“That was their little banter, back and forth,” Udoka surmised.
Green, of course, got the last laugh as he scored an extremely efficient 34 points in only three quarters. With Green in a starring role, Houston (27-12) entered Thursday with five straight victories.
