During the Second World War, many brave soldiers found themselves in impossible situations and managed to pull off incredible escapes. Here are seven great escapes made by real Second World War heroes:
1. The Great Escape: Perhaps the most famous escape of all, this daring plan involved Allied prisoners digging tunnels out of a German POW camp. Only a handful of the 76 escapees made it to safety, but their bravery and ingenuity captured the world’s imagination.
2. Operation Jericho: In 1944, Allied forces launched a daring raid on a German prison in France to free captured resistance fighters. Despite heavy casualties, the mission was a success and over 250 prisoners were liberated.
3. The Colditz Cock: In 1942, British prisoners at Colditz Castle built a glider in secret with the hope of flying to freedom. Although the glider was never completed, the audacity of the plan is still remembered today.
4. The Wooden Horse: In 1943, three British POWs used a wooden vaulting horse as a cover to dig a tunnel under the fences of their camp. The escape was successful and inspired the classic film of the same name.
5. The Battle of Castle Itter: In 1945, American soldiers, Wehrmacht troops, and French prisoners of war joined forces to defend a castle in Austria from an SS attack. The unlikely alliance held out until Allied reinforcements arrived, saving the prisoners from certain death.
6. The Amiens Raid: In 1944, British and Canadian forces launched a surprise attack on a German-held prison in France, freeing over 200 resistance fighters and other prisoners.
7. The Raid on Stalag Luft III: In 1944, British and American prisoners at Stalag Luft III staged a mass escape through a tunnel dug under the camp. Although most of the escapees were recaptured, their determination and courage have become legendary.
These incredible stories of bravery and resilience remind us of the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom during the Second World War. The courage and ingenuity of these real-life heroes continue to inspire us today.
