Savannah opening warming centers for potential snow next week

The City of Savannah is prepared to open warming centers city-wide and encourages residents to prepare in anticipation of the forecasted winter weather.
The National Weather Service is forecasting potential snow on Tuesday and Wednesday in Augusta, Macon, Atlanta Athens and Savannah. On Friday, Jan. 17 NWS predicts minor impacts from freezing rain, snow and/or sleet for a 24-hour period beginning Tuesday, Jan. 21 and ending at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Details on the warming centers will be shared with the public when available, according to a news release from the city. Dump trucks of sand will be on standby to address any dangerous ice on city-maintained roadways, and will be mobilized upon request from the Savannah Police Department.
The city will also work closely with the Georgia Department of Transportation on state-maintained roadways in Savannah.

Ahead of the extreme weather, the city recommends the following, which is also available on their website:
- Protect pipes from freezing
- Stock up on essential supplies
- Check heating systems
- Use space heaters safely
- Weatherproof your home
- Plan for transportation delays
- Prepare your vehicle
Georgia Power also encourages residents to do the following:
- Check that your contact number is up to date to receive the latest information for storm tips and outage updates and get real-time information on the status of your outages and track estimated restoration times through checking the outage map.
- Follow them on Facebook, Instagram, and X for storm tips, outage updates, customer service, and more.
- Visit www.GeorgiaPower.com/Storm, to access useful storm prep tips and for ways that we prepare for severe weather.
- Access storm and outage information on the go on the Georgia Power mobile app.
Chatham Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) will also be monitoring the forecast and recommends the following:
- Avoid driving if possible, if you must drive, drive slowly
- Make an emergency supply kit before the storm hits
- Dress in layers and limit time outdoors
- Follow @chathamcountyga and @chathamemergency on social media, or sign up for alerts by texting CEMA to 77295.
Emergency services will operate as normal throughout the weather event. Residents are encouraged to call 311 or submit a service request via the 311 app. For emergencies, call 911.
