Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton acknowledged after his team’s 30-24 overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium in NFL Week 17 that his team’s momentum coupled with the oppotunity to play for a tie factored into the decision not to try a 2-point conversion after Marvin Mims Jr.’s controversial touchdown catch late in the fourth quarter.
A tie Saturday would’ve given Denver the final AFC playoff spot, ending the Bengals’ playoff chances.
“We spent some time thinking about … going for 2,” Payton told reporters. “We knew a tie, though, was for us just as beneficial as a win. And we felt like we had the momentum at that point. So, look, it went back and forth, and in the end we didn’t make enough plays. They did.”
The Bengals did play the overtime period without starting running back Chase Brown, who suffered an ankle sprain during the fourth quarter.
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow broke his own franchise single-season record for passing yardage with his 31-yard toss to Tee Higgins to set up a game-winning touchdown pass to Higgins.
In a post-game press conference, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton explained his decision not to go for a two-point conversion after a touchdown by wide receiver Denzel Mims against the Cincinnati Bengals.
Payton cited a variety of factors that went into his decision-making process, including the score, time remaining in the game, and the overall game situation. He emphasized that he felt confident in his team’s ability to tie the game with an extra point and potentially win in overtime.
Ultimately, Payton’s decision not to go for two did not pay off, as the Broncos fell to the Bengals by a narrow margin. However, he stood by his choice and expressed his belief in the team’s ability to bounce back from this tough loss.
Fans and analysts may continue to debate the decision, but Payton’s explanation sheds light on the strategic thinking behind his coaching decisions in crucial moments of the game.
