Simple steps from Texas Gas Service can cut winter energy bills and keep homes warm

The Texas Gas Service shares money-saving tips for the holidays as the U.S. Department of Energy claims Texans have saved hundreds of dollars already by using natural gas this winter.

According to the Texas Gas Service, a report done by the Department of Energy claims Texans saved between $500 to $700 by using natural gas to keep their homes warm.

The Texas Gas Service said the report aligns with findings from the American Gas Association, showing that natural gas saves households over $1,100 annually on cooking, heating and clothes drying.

To keep the savings going, Texas Gas Service has shared the following six tips to reduce your energy use and keep your gas bill low:

  1. Keep oven doors closed when cooking, use oven lights to check on food instead.
  2. Reduce the temperature of your water heater by setting it to 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Seal gaps and cracks around doors and windows to keep warm air in and cold air out.
  4. Change or clean air filters. A clean filter on your furnace can lower energy consumption by 5 to 15 percent.
  5. Install foam gaskets on electrical switches and outlets. Electrical switches and outlets can account for up to 10 percent of your home’s energy loss.
  6. Change the rotation of ceiling fans. Hot air rises, so reverse your ceiling fans to a clockwise rotation to push warm air downward.

“Our teams take pride in providing customers with a reliable, affordable energy choice,” said Alex Limon, vice president of Operations for Texas Gas Service. “Lower energy costs mean families have more money to meet their everyday needs, which is especially important around the holidays.”

As the temperatures drop and winter approaches, many homeowners are looking for ways to keep their homes warm without breaking the bank. Luckily, Texas Gas Service has some simple steps that can help reduce energy bills and keep homes cozy during the colder months.

1. Seal up any drafts: Check windows, doors, and other areas where cold air could be seeping into your home. Use weather stripping or caulking to seal up any drafts and prevent heat from escaping.

2. Use a programmable thermostat: Set your thermostat to lower temperatures when you’re away from home or asleep, and raise it when you’re back and active. This can help save energy and money without sacrificing comfort.

3. Insulate your home: Adding insulation to your attic, walls, and floors can help keep heat inside your home and reduce the amount of energy needed to stay warm.

4. Maintain your heating system: Make sure your furnace or heat pump is running efficiently by scheduling regular maintenance and changing filters as needed. This can help improve air flow and reduce energy consumption.

5. Use curtains or blinds: Keep curtains and blinds closed at night to help insulate windows and keep heat from escaping. During the day, open them up to let in natural sunlight and warmth.

By following these simple steps from Texas Gas Service, homeowners can cut winter energy bills and stay comfortable throughout the season. Stay warm and cozy this winter while saving money on your energy costs!
