The Philadelphia 76ers were able to knock off the Portland Trail Blazers 125-103 on Monday night for their fourth consecutive win. The Sixers are now 3-0 on this current 6-game road trip and 10-3 since the 3-14 start to the season.
Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey stepped up to lead the way for the Sixers, but Guerschon Yabusele continues to play an important role for this group.
Yabusele had 11 of his 16 points in the second quarter as Philadelphia was able to pull away from the Blazers. The Dancing Bear has been terrific for the Sixers in his return to the NBA and he has the respect of his teammates for everything he does on the floor.
“We ask Yabu to do a lot of different things,” Maxey told reporters after the win. “We ask him to play 4. We ask him to play 5. We ask him to shoot 3s. We ask him to dunk on people. We ask him to post up. We ask him switch and he does it every single time. We ask him to start. Start at the 5. Start at the 4, come on the bench. He’s done it all. So we appreciate Yabu and he’s done a really good job.”
One has to wonder if the Sixers knew Yabusele would just step in and produce at this level. He was out of the league playing overseas for the previous five seasons after a tough stint in Boston from 2017 through 2019. This is almost like an out of the blue moment for both him and the Sixers.
“I think preseason, like, game one, two and three, I’m like—I didn’t know—I knew he could shoot,” Maxey added. “When we got to preseason, like, real game situations, he was shooting the ball really well. That is what I didn’t know. I didn’t know that.”
It’s that versatility that makes Yabusele so valuable for Philadelphia. His ability to play multiple positions on the frontline while also being able to knock down 3s as well as be available for post ups allows him to thrive in any role coach Nick Nurse and the Sixers ask of him.
“I knew he was strong,” Maxey finished. “I knew he was able to guard 5s. I knew he would be able to play a lot of point-5 defenses with Joel guarding somebody else in the corner and he can roll off of him. So Yabu’s done a really good job.”
The Sixers will continue the road trip on Wednesday against the Sacramento Kings on New Year’s Day.
The Philadelphia 76ers’ rookie guard Tyrese Maxey recently shared his thoughts on what makes his teammate Guerschon Yabusele so helpful on the court. Maxey emphasized Yabusele’s versatility and high basketball IQ as key factors in his impact on the team.
In an interview, Maxey stated, “Guerschon is such a valuable asset to our team because he can do a little bit of everything. He’s a great defender, can knock down shots, and is always in the right place at the right time. His basketball IQ is off the charts, and he’s always making the right play to help us win games.”
Maxey also praised Yabusele’s work ethic and positive attitude, saying, “Guerschon is always putting in the extra work in practice and in the weight room. He’s a great teammate and is always cheering us on from the bench. He brings a lot of energy and positivity to the team, which is so important, especially during tough stretches in the season.”
Overall, Maxey’s comments highlight the valuable contributions that Yabusele brings to the Sixers both on and off the court. With his versatility, basketball IQ, work ethic, and positive attitude, Yabusele continues to be a key asset for the team as they push towards their playoff aspirations.
