Updated Friday 7:00 am: Meteorologist Amy Aaronson
Our area is on WEATHER ALERT for Dangerously Cold Temperatures Tuesday & Wednesday as a major blast of Arctic air arrives.
This will be the coldest air of the season to impact the area and it will also affect 3/4 of the lower 48 states with temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees below average.
Ahead of that system, there will be two disturbances over the weekend that will bring a chance for showers followed by a chance for snow.
A few rain showers are likely Saturday as temperatures will likely be above freezing reaching the 40s by the afternoon. Rain totals will not be much but another disturbance has a good change of bringing some accumulating snow across Maryland on Sunday starting late morning through Sunday night.
While confidence of the snowfall is increasing, the snow totals will be highly dependent on the storm’s exact track. Just a slight shift of 50 miles north or south could make a big difference in snow totals for the Baltimore area. For now, scenario B appears most likely where much of the state will see some amount of accumulating snow.
Confidence is not particularly high on exact snow totals yet. But, about 1″ to around 3″ is expected with this system with some isolated pockets of 4″ possible.
There could be some changes to that forecast depending on how the forecast data trends in the coming days. Check back here for updates on predicted snow totals.
Snow will end by Sunday night and Monday begins the major chill down as temperatures crash through Tuesday.
Highs will drop from the 40s on Saturday, down to the teens on Tuesday & Wednesday with low temperatures reaching the single digits.
Dangerously cold wind chill values will be down in the negatives for both Tuesday & Wednesday. Exposure to the extreme cold can lead to hypothermia and frost bite in only 30 minutes. It is important to take precautions and cover all exposed areas with multiple loose fitting layers of clothing. Bring animals indoors and protect exposed water pipes.
A slow return to above freezing temperatures will begin late next week.
