Sunny and calm through the weekend

Very strong high pressure has dominated the region and set up bright and nearly still conditions across New England. High pressure brings sinking air, which prevents any real clouds from forming, and also neutralizes wind patterns.
This theme will continue today as the area of high pressure reaches peak intensity, reaching around 1035 millibars. To put that into context, the average or standard atmospheric pressure is about 1013 millibars, so anything higher than that would be considered high pressure. The highest atmospheric pressure ever recorded was 1083.8 millibars in Siberia on December 31, 1968.
Aside from mostly sunny skies and calm conditions that New Englanders can expect today, the only difference today from yesterday is that the core of the high pressure system will slide south and east of New England — setting up a southerly flow to help boost the mercury a few degrees for this afternoon.

Clear skies overnight allowed for much of the surface heating to escape freely setting up a frigid start to the day. Commuting temperatures will be in the low to mid-20s. The switch over to a southerly flow will help bring some relatively mild air into the region. We’ll see temperatures work to the mid and upper 30s for this afternoon around Greater Boston.

A potent warm front and continued southerly flow will bring clouds and some light precipitation back into New England Saturday while keeping temperatures closer to 40 degrees. A handful of light showers will push through the region on early Saturday morning as the front nears. These will be light, but likely to arrive before sunrise on Saturday morning where temperatures at the surface are freezing, bringing a decent chance of some freezing rain to leave a small glaze of ice on some surfaces across Southern New England.

Winter weather advisories are in place for Saturday morning and spilling into the afternoon stretching from Boston to Pittsfield.

Temperatures will continue to climb Sunday and Monday with a surge of moisture and warmth ahead of a potent system that’ll bring bouts of rain across the region both of those days.
With temperatures reaching the upper 40s and low 50s on Sunday and Monday, this storm will be a rainmaker, no snow this round. Sunday should see wet weather in bunches with broken and scattered storm cells while Monday becomes more steady and widespread.

Between Sunday and Monday, most New Englanders can expect to see between a half inch to an inch of rain. There will likely be a couple localized totals up to an inch-and-a-half, but those should be only in a few spots.

Widespread thawing across New England’s snowpack raises the questions about flooding. Will the melting snow combined with a decent soaking raise the flood threat? Slightly yes, but the rate of melt paired with thirsty soil should reduce the risk for flooding. There could be an additional half inch of melted snow water that would be very helpful in accelerating improving drought conditions.
