11:45 remaining: Wake Forest 21, Syracuse 8

Kyle Cuffe Jr. went 1-2 from the line. Points have been scarce for SU so far.

Off the Cuffe assist was a three by Lucas Taylor. The first field goal in nearly four minutes for the Orange.

Cuffe knocks down two from the charity stripe this time. The bench has been giving SU a much needed lift offensively.

15:58 remaining: Wake Forest 16, Syracuse 2

Eddie Lampkin gets the scoring started for Syracuse off the offensive rebound and put-back layup.

SU’s defense has been porous so far. Missed rotations and poor transition defense has them down 16-2 within the first four minutes.

Pregame

Syracuse (6-6, 0-1 ACC) looks for its first conference win in the ACC home opener against Wake Forest (9-4, 1-1 ACC).

In the all-time series, the Orange have a significant 11-4 advantage. But as of recent, the Demon Deacons have been slowly trying to make up ground, winning the last two matchups. One of those games was a 30-point blowout at the expense of SU. The last time Syracuse won was in March of 2023.

The Orange are coming off a 75-63 victory over Bucknell to close out the squad’s non-conference schedule. Eddie Lampkin and Donnie Freeman both logged double-doubles, while Jaquan Carlos was just one assist shy of recording a double-double himself.

Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons haven’t played a game in 10 days. That contest was a 72-63 loss against No. 25 Clemson. Hunter Sallis, a projected NBA prospect for the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft, had a team-high 26 points.

Sallis is the team’s primary scorer on the season. The senior averages just under 18 points per game while shooting near 90% from the charity stripe. Another fourth-year to keep an eye on is Cameron Hildreth who is second in scoring on the team at 13 points a night.

One Thing To Keep An Eye On: How Do The Orange Respond Against One Of The Better Teams In The Conference

Offensively, Wake Forest is led by Sallis who is a top five scorer in the conference and is projected in many mock drafts to be a late first-round or early second-round pick. Additionally the Demon Deacons are the second best team in the conference in terms of blocks with just under five a game. Similarly, Wake Forest allows just under 65 points a night on average, good for third-best in the conference.

This matchup should be a barometer for how the Orange can stack up in the ACC. If SU can beat a respectable Wake Forest team on its home floor, it’ll be a win that can be a momentum boost for a team that has been looking for a jolt of energy for the last month. But more than that, it’ll prove that Syracuse has the talent and potential to remain relevant in what’s proving to be a rather top-heavy conference.
