  • Mets agree with infielder Nick Madrigal on 1-year deal: Sources

Looking to add to their infield depth, the New York Mets agreed to a one-year deal with veteran Nick Madrigal on Friday, league sources confirmed. The New York Post first reported the agreement. It’s a split contract, league sources said, meaning Madrigal would earn different salaries in the majors and minors.

Madrigal, who turns 28 in March and holds minor-league options, is set to compete in spring training for an infield role along with younger players Brett Baty, Luisangel Acuña and Ronny Mauricio, among others. The Athletic previously reported that the Mets were in the market for infield depth.

Similar to Jose Iglesias, a free agent who excelled in a utility role last season with the Mets, Madrigal offers some versatility. In the majors, he has played second base and third base (no word on Madrigal’s singing ability).

Madrigal puts the ball in play and hardly ever strikes out (just 9 percent of the time over his career). He doesn’t hit balls especially hard or find barrels, however. With the Chicago White Sox and over his first two seasons, Madrigal, the fourth pick in the 2018 draft, slashed .317/.358/.406. But he hasn’t matched that production since. Over his past three seasons, all spent with the Chicago Cubs, Madrigal has slashed just .251/.304/.312.

The New York Mets have reportedly reached an agreement with infielder Nick Madrigal on a 1-year deal, according to sources close to the team. Madrigal, known for his exceptional defensive skills and high contact rate at the plate, is expected to provide a valuable addition to the Mets’ roster for the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates as details of the deal are released. Mets fans, are you excited to see Madrigal in a Mets uniform? Let us know in the comments below! #Mets #NickMadrigal #MLB #HotStove

  • Sources – Brittney Griner agrees to 1-year deal with Dream

After 11 seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, 10-time WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner has agreed to a one-year deal with the Atlanta Dream, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.

Griner, who spent her entire career in Phoenix after being drafted No. 1 overall in 2013, heads to Atlanta in one of the most stunning free agency signings in league history.

The move can’t be made official until Saturday, when contracts are allowed to be signed.

Griner’s departure marks the official beginning of a new era for the Mercury, who could also be without Diana Taurasi for the first time in two decades if she decides to retire. Taurasi and Griner won the franchise its third and most recent championship in 2014.

The 6-foot-9 center missed the 2022 campaign when she was wrongfully detained in Russia for nearly 10 months. She was eventually freed in a high-profile prisoner exchange and returned to All-Star form in 2023 and 2024.

Griner, a six-time all-WNBA selection, goes to Atlanta as the biggest free agent signing in franchise history. She joins a team also headlined by Rhyne Howard, drafted first overall by the Dream in 2022, and Allisha Gray, for whom Atlanta traded for in 2023. The franchise moved on this offseason from former coach Tanisha Wright and hired Karl Smesko from Florida Gulf Coast University to lead the team.

The Las Vegas Aces also looked at signing Griner, sources told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, in their long-standing effort to find another big to play alongside A’ja Wilson. But after acquiring former Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd and evaluating their style of play moving forward, sources said the Aces have turned their attention to other post players such as Cheyenne Parker-Tyus and trying to re-sign veterans Tiffany Hayes and Alysha Clark.

Earlier Tuesday, the Mercury also finalized a deal to acquire five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas and Ty Harris from the Connecticut Sun, sources told ESPN, a trade that will send Natasha Cloud, Rebecca Allen and the 2025 No. 12 overall pick to Uncasville.

According to sources, Phoenix is also expected to meet with Satou Sabally, who has requested a trade out of Dallas, and speak with free agent DeWanna Bonner.

ESPN’s Shams Charania contributed to this report.

Sources have confirmed that WNBA star Brittney Griner has agreed to a 1-year deal with the Atlanta Dream. This signing marks a significant move for the Dream, as Griner is considered one of the top players in the league.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the WNBA! #BrittneyGriner #AtlantaDream #WNBA.

  • Cincinnati Reds sign OF Austin Hays to 1-year deal

The Cincinnati Reds seemingly addressed their outfield issues on Tuesday, agreeing to a 1-year contract with free agent outfielder Austin Hays. It’s a $5 million pact, per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, and Hays will bring some much needed right-handed prowess to an otherwise lefty-heavy outfield mix.

#Reds adding OF Austin Hays, agreeing to a one-year, $5M deal, according to The Athletic’s @ken-rosenthal.bsky.social.

An All-Star in 2023, Hays started last season with the Orioles, the team that drafted him in 2016, before being traded to the Phillies www.nytimes.com/athletic/609…

    C Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent.bsky.social) 2025-01-28T17:06:20.691Z

Reds outfielders posted a collective 85 wRC+ during the course of the 2024 season, with regression from Will Benson and Spencer Steer paired with the brutal string of injuries to TJ Friedl and the absence of Jake Fraley due to family reasons. That ranked tied for the fifth worst mark in the game, and their production against LHP (84 wRC+) ranked tied for fourth worst.

In Hays, the Reds will (in theory) get someone who can help out against LHP. He’s the owner of a .800 OPS in over 700 career PA against southpaws, a number that far outpaces the .719 OPS he’s put up against RHP in his career. Those numbers were even more drastic in 2024 as he put up an impressive .941 OPS against LHP in 90 PA split between Baltimore and Philadelphia while the .569 OPS he posted against RHP in 165 PA was completely unplayable.

That’s the hope here, really. Hays will join Stuart Fairchild and Spencer Steer as OF options against LHP, with Friedl, Benson, Steer, and Fraley the go-to options on the other side of the platoon. Whereas it would have been nice for the Reds to actually sign a full-time, impact player to join the ranks of their outfield, it appears they’ve settled on doing it in piecemeal fashion once again.

It should be pointed out that Hays, 29, is coming off the single worst season of his career and that his former team, the Orioles, opted to move on from his last year during that dip in favor of their talented crop of young outfielders instead, flipping him to the Phillies (who non-tendered him at season’s end). He dealt with a pretty significant kidney infection during the 2024 season, however, and the hope here is that the illness was to blame for his dip in production.

Still, he’s the owner of a career .313 OBP and plays on the short side of a platoon. Even if he does return to what he does best, that makes him mostly a bench-bat. It’s also worth pointing out that while Baltimore moved on from Hays altogether, they just inked Dylan Carlson – who’s younger and a pretty solid defender – for 1/5th of what Hays just was guaranteed by the Reds.

It’s hard to think anything other than this is it for the Reds offseason transactions of note for their position player corps. I’ll leave it to you to decide whether or not it’s enough.

The Cincinnati Reds have bolstered their outfield depth by signing Austin Hays to a 1-year deal. Hays, a talented young outfielder, brings a combination of speed, power, and defensive prowess to the Reds lineup.

With Hays joining the Reds, the team now has added another dynamic player to their roster who can contribute both at the plate and in the field. Hays has shown flashes of brilliance in his young career and will be looking to make a significant impact in Cincinnati.

Fans of the Reds can look forward to seeing Hays patrolling the outfield and making plays both offensively and defensively. His addition adds depth and versatility to the team’s roster, giving them even more options to work with throughout the season.

Overall, the signing of Austin Hays is a positive move for the Cincinnati Reds and adds another exciting player to their already talented lineup. Stay tuned for more updates as the season approaches.

  • Report: Pirates sign Frazier to 1-year, $1.525M deal

The Pittsburgh Pirates and veteran utility player Adam Frazier agreed to a one-year, $1.525-million contract, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Frazier struggled in 2024, slashing .202/.282/.294 with four home runs, 10 doubles, and 22 RBIs across 104 games with the Kansas City Royals.

However, the 33-year-old is a versatile defensive player, making appearances at second base, third base, and both corner outfield spots last season.

Frazier is returning to the Pirates for a second stint after spending parts of the first six seasons of his MLB career in Pittsburgh. He’s a lifetime .264 hitter with a .713 OPS in 1,066 games.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly signed outfielder Adam Frazier to a one-year, $1.525 million deal, according to multiple sources.

Frazier, 30, is coming off a solid season with the Pirates, where he hit .305 with seven home runs and 50 RBIs in 2020. He has been a consistent performer for the team over the past few seasons and will look to continue his success in 2021.

The signing of Frazier is seen as a smart move for the Pirates, who are looking to build a competitive team for the upcoming season. Frazier’s versatility in the outfield and his ability to get on base make him a valuable asset for the team.

Fans are excited to see Frazier back in a Pirates uniform and are hopeful that he can help lead the team to success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on the Pirates’ offseason moves.

  • Orioles agree to 1-year, $975,000 deal with OF Dylan Carlson

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles agreed to terms with Dylan Carlson on a $975,000, one-year contract Monday, a couple of months after the outfielder was non-tendered by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Carlson was a first-round draft pick in 2016 by the St. Louis Cardinals, and he hit 18 home runs in his first full season in 2021. Since then, however, he’s hit only 16.

Carlson hit .209 with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 96 games for the Cardinals and Rays in 2024, but at age 26 the switch-hitter may still have some upside and can play all three outfield spots.

The Orioles lost right fielder Anthony Santander to Toronto via free agency, and they’ve added outfielder Tyler O’Neill. Also in the mix for playing time in the Baltimore outfield are Cedric Mullins, Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad.

Carlson’s deal includes a $25,000 bonus if he reaches 200 plate appearances.
