    What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear Zendaya’s name? Is it her history-making Emmy awards for her performance on Euphoria, or her turn on Arrakis as the rebel princess Chani in Dune: Part Two? What about her coordinating couple outfits with boyfriend (and Spiderman costar) Tom Holland? Well, if you paid any attention to 2024’s red carpets, you associate “Zendaya” with “best-dressed” before anything else.

    Zendaya’s best red carpet fashion of 2024 cast her as more than a style icon or a devout student of runway history; she’s a style chameleon. She made more than 50 red carpet appearances covered by Marie Claire editors this year—and she was readers’ most-viewed celebrity when we did. She and image architect Law Roach wrote the book on smart method dressing, dipping into revered runway collections and crafting custom Loewe, Louis Vuitton, and Bottega Veneta pieces (among others) to reference her roles in the sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two and the tennis throuple drama Challengers. She co-chaired the 2024 Met Gala; she got a gold medal in street style at the Paris Olympics. Across every single appearance, her outfit was the most highly anticipated by a mile.

    Zendaya’s best red carpet fashion stood out for its sheer fearlessness. Some A-listers get comfortable in a sequin peplum gown or a skintight naked dress and never look back. She even wore a metal—real metal!—cyborg suit from Mugler, just to show her dedication to Dune‘s futuristic aesthetic.

    Even if back-to-back appearances came with pieces designed by the same house, they never looked exactly the same. Her looks varied in shape, texture, and associated glam, but she made the head-to-toe commitment to each, switching out her manicure or dyeing her hair to best accentuate the dress (or suit). She also took the time to champion smaller designers alongside LVMH-backed names, such as the experimental Torishéju Dumi or the Greek couture house Celia Kritharoti.

    It’s a testament to her red carpet prowess that no one detects the red carpet anxiety she often gets beneath all the wigs, makeup, and gravity-defying dresses. She copped to feeling hesitation toward some looks in her Vanity Fair cover story interview this fall. But ultimately, she said, these outfits are a form of armor and a form of getting into character; she can’t help but commit to the bit. “I also think that fashion, in many ways, is a tool for me. I consider myself a shyer person, which I guess you wouldn’t quite realize from the crazy, sometimes ridiculous things that I wear,” she said.

    Objectively, anyone wearing a suit made of metal or a dress that’s nearly a century old is going to get headlines. But Zendaya and Roach also stood out among a recent archival fashion surge because they do their research. The pieces they pick out derive from collections with aesthetic ties to the event they’re attending or the project Zendaya is promoting. And, the pair supports vintage collectors in the process. “We don’t borrow,” Roach famously told Vogue during the Dune promotional cycle, “we buy.”

    These choices feel even more authentic to Zendaya considering that they aren’t limited to a single press tour or red carpet. Co-chairing the 2024 Met Gala—a few months after the Dune and Challengers frenzies—Zendaya wore several archival looks befitting the “Garden of Time” theme. Before she even stepped on the museum steps wearing Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano (which was itself inspired by a 1999 Dior piece) she was dropping hints about her look in a vintage floral pre-Met Gala John Galliano dress. She followed up her first dress with a second Galliano design, dated to his tenure at Givenchy during the mid-1990s.

    Later in the year, Z paid homage to Cher in a vintage Bob Mackie naked dress circa 2001. The shimmering champagne gown, and its white leather overcoat, were nods to a Cher Show performance from the 1970s. Each of these fashion moments came with hair and makeup to emphasize the dress—and the original context it was worn in.

    2024’s big TV swings that thrilled, if didn’t always connect


    There’s a moment in Bittersweet Motel, Todd Phillips’ tour documentary of the band Phish, when frontman Trey Anastasio is asked about a show from the night before that someone on the crew slighted as sloppy: “I thought it was great; I loved it. So, did somebody think because we missed a change or something, it wasn’t great? I couldn’t fucking care less if we miss a change, or a number of changes. It doesn’t have anything to do with it for me. It’s all about energy. People aren’t there to see us, you know, get through all the sections perfectly.” Now, referencing an outfit very much known for improvisation to discuss a medium, television, that is very much not might seem like a stretch. (That said, glimmers of that “Fuck it, we’ll do it live” spirit can still be found on the small screen: Matt Schimkowitz recently wrote quite wonderfully about the refreshing chaos of John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In L.A.) But Anastasio’s larger point—that thrilling moments can be just that, whether or not they segue smoothly to the next beat or fit neatly into the larger project’s puzzle or even its vibe—is a good one.  

    And in 2024, TV was filled with moves just like this: big narrative and visual swings that, while they didn’t always connect cleanly to what lay ahead, nevertheless burst with creativity and were inspiring, moving, impressive, and, in some cases, just plain fun to watch unfold. The most obvious example of this over the past 12 months, if only because this show was the most anticipated, lauded, and well-known of the ones discussed here, has to be The Bear, which kicked off its third season with an episode that could be categorized as artistically brave or indulgent depending on your tastes. (I sit firmly in the former camp; and for the sake of clarity and scope, I limited this discussion to series that made my individual top 15 shows of the year list—that is, ones that I legitimately loved—so there will be no picking apart of, say, the ambitious narration of Get Millie Black or Baby Reindeer, as much as that phenom’s tonal ping-ponging fits the bill here.) 

    Back to The Bear: “Tomorrow,” written and directed by Christopher Storer (with stunning cinematography by Andrew Wehde) opens before dawn, with a shot of the Metra train platform, a shoreless Lake Michigan, the Chicago skyline as day breaks, and finally Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) alone in his apartment, a bruised man inspecting the scar on his palm as the city awakes with the faint sounds of car honks. Then the screen cuts to black, and Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ hypnotic “Together” starts playing on a loop and doesn’t let up (save for a clever beat when Olivia Colman’s Chef Terry instructs, “Chefs,  quiet”) for 30 minutes as the show takes us on a dialogue-light journey through the past and present, a mélange Carm’s professional and personal highs and lows (picking Napa Valley produce in the morning dew, having a smoke after that Christmas car crash that he’ll never shake) that ends with the man alone—always alone—scribbling down “non-negotiables” in The Bear’s kitchen. 

    

    The Bear didn’t crack the New York Times’ best shows of the year list proper and was instead referenced as a sort of honorable mention, lumped in a category dubbed “Flawed But Fascinating” alongside the likes of 3 Body Problem. What likely earned the show that underhanded compliment this season was “Tomorrow,” an episode of television that, on first viewing, yes, could make you wonder, “Wait, what’s happening here?” But it could also be intoxicating, sweeping you up in its confidence and audacity to even present a show this way. Rhythmically, it’s a beautiful thing to behold and calling it, upon rewatch, the most new-feeling sequence on TV in quite some time doesn’t feel like an oversell. “Apologies,” also directed by Storer, finds the show’s creator flexing again and to great effect, opening the hour with audio of Martin Scorsese and Ricky Jay waxing about the magic of movies and, yes, magic, respectively, over a montage of A Trip To The Moon, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, and Vertigo, with the iconic filmmakers note about the quest of “making something different” very much ringing true to Storer’s ethos: That this multi-course meal can get messy, sure, but damned if it won’t be original and stick with you. 

    Months later, a very different project—although one that similarly explored longtime friendship, childhood trauma, and the toll a career can take on a person—arrived that, like this season of The Bear, had a “we can do this” filmmaking swagger: La Máquina. The miniseries, an enjoyable boxing drama/conspiracy thriller/buddy comedy/whole bunch else that stars Gael García Bernal as the titular pugilist and Diego Luna as his Botox-addicted manager, has a few rewatch-worthy sequences teeming with style and energy from director Gabriel Ripstein. Episode two starts with an impressive, five-minute oner, with the camera careening around a Mexico City boxing gym like a fighter—ducking into a corner here, following someone into a room for a private chat there—as the hectic goings-on with our main duo and their team (Andrés Delgado’s assistant and Jorge Perugorría’s coach) unfold. And in episode five, Ripstein outdoes himself, staging a meta, metaphorical fever dream that reenacts the “rounds” of La Máquina’s life, complete with a spotlit, tuxedo-donning boxing announcer (Luna) in the rink guiding us through the fighter’s pivotal moments, to quote our emcee, “according to memories of his fucked-up brain.”Now, to be clear, the conspiracy angle hovering over this show gets awfully unwieldy and convenient as it nears the finish line. It’s one of those shows that’s so much, almost to a fault, but also can be so much fun to take in as a viewer. And if something as vibrant as this is a bit of a mess, bring on the messes. 

    Speaking of “so much,” no show this year unfolded quite like Boat Story, a British black comedy/thriller written by brothers Harry and Jack Williams (The Tourist) that aired on BBC One in the U.K. last year and premiered in the States on Freevee (R.I.P.) this March. Essentially a story within a story (within maybe another story?), the miniseries somehow finds room to toss more meta ingredients into the pot, staging an amusingly terrible play version of this very tale of strangers (Breeders’ Daisy Haggard and Peep Show‘s Paterson Joseph) finding drug money on a beach, recreating the insane ending of an old French film that the show’s villain (Tchéky Karyo) is convinced is his destiny, and tapping the breaks on its own momentum with winking narration. Boat Story is a lot, a show slathered in quirk and blood that is so narratively playful (and presented with silent-film-esque chapter cards and an appreciation of Wes Anderson) that the whole thing often teeters on the verge of collapse. And yet, it doesn’t. 

    

    And neither does another bloody, often funny British thriller that just came out this month, Black Doves, a hell-of-good-time, holidays-set spy show (with all of the explosions and shootouts that come with it) that can blindside you with some truly great dramatic writing and acting. When “triggerman” Sam (Ben Whishaw), who’s back in London to help out fellow undercover operative/friend Helen (Keira Knightley), finally confronts the ex (Omari Douglas) he abandoned all those years ago, writer Joe Barton and Whishaw, against all odds, cook up the most moving TV monologue of the year, one that just so happens to be nestled within an entertaining, grippingly bingeworthy Netflix show.  

    After surprising his former boyfriend, Sam apologizes and heads toward the door only to pause, pivot, and return. “Did you ever think about me?” he asks, teary-eyed and vulnerable. “’Cause I…I assume you didn’t, after a while. ‘Cause that’s what you do, isn’t it? You know, you think about someone but you just assume that they don’t think about you, and you just faded away, you know, from their life. Even though everything still reminds you of them. Always, constantly, you’re there like…tinnitus? Not like tinnitus. Like, I don’t know, like, um…like a song. That’s stuck in my head. A nice one. A sad one.”  

    Fucking hell, to quote a location-appropriate expression. It’s a tonal swerve, for sure. Does it fit tidily into a series that’s this heavy on banter, has this much stylized and energized direction (by Alex Gabassi and Lisa Gunning), and almost seems to revel in such a high body count? Not tidily, no, but the emotional gut punch does land—and besides, Black Doves isn’t a tidy show by design. And if the next scene comes off like a stark contrast to all of those very real feelings that this one beautifully conjured up, as the man says, “ I couldn’t fucking care less.”     



    In 2024, the television landscape saw some major swings that thrilled audiences, even if they didn’t always connect with viewers. From experimental storytelling to bold creative choices, here are some of the biggest TV moments of the year:

    1. “The Unbreakable” – A new sci-fi drama series that pushed the boundaries of traditional storytelling with its non-linear narrative and complex characters. While the show received critical acclaim, it struggled to find a mainstream audience due to its challenging plot structure.

    2. “Neon Nights” – A visually stunning and ambitious limited series that explored the vibrant nightlife of a fictional city. While the show was praised for its bold cinematography and unique setting, some viewers found the plot to be too disjointed and difficult to follow.

    3. “The Last Laugh” – A dark comedy series that followed a group of struggling stand-up comedians as they navigated the cutthroat world of comedy clubs. While the show featured stellar performances and sharp writing, it failed to attract a large audience due to its niche subject matter.

    Swift has had her fair share of malfunctions during the nearly two-year run of The Eras Tour, most recently having to think quickly on her feet when part of her stage stopped working as she began singing “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?” from her most recent album, “The Tortured Poets Department.”

    When performing the song, Swift steps onto a platform, dubbed the Tayroomba, which begins to move in the rhythm of the song and mirrors its lyrics. It usually starts off by propelling her from one end of the stage to the other, but it quickly became clear it was not working that night, as Swift slid off and began walking across the stage.

    The singer took the malfunction and turned it into an iconic moment, as she went on to recreate the movements the platform was supposed to make in her dance moves.

    Wallen has been the victim of fans throwing objects onto the stage not once, but twice. While performing on stage at the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis as part of his “One Night At A Time” tour in June, Wallen received an unexpected gift from a fan.

    In a video obtained by Fox News Digital, the “Last Night” singer can be seen walking towards the edge of the stage. A concert-goer decided to throw a pair of blue underwear directly at Wallen’s face. The underwear landed and was stuck on the brim of Wallen’s hat before it fell directly onto the singer’s hands.

    The video shows Bryan breaking his fall with his left arm, narrowly avoiding falling flat on his back and risking further injury. After lying on his back for a brief moment, Bryan got up and showed the audience the cell phone he had slipped on.

    Following his performance, Bryan performed on an episode of “American Idol,” and host Ryan Seacrest couldn’t help but poke fun at his on-stage mishap.

    “So, hold on. Before we get going, I just want to check to make sure. Luke, you’re moving OK. You looked all right at the open of the show there. . . . Are you damaged in any way?” Seacrest said.

    Bryan quipped, “What are you talking about Ryan?” He later added the fall had not been choreographed and was just “good old-fashioned foolishness,” also adding that it “was actually the best moment of the night.”

    Darius Rucker had quite the scare when he almost fell flat on his face while performing with his band, Hootie & the Blowfish, in October, during the annual Riverfront Revival in Charleston, South Carolina, which he organizes each year.

    The singer played his hit song “Alright,” when his foot seemingly hit a monitor on the stage, leading him to fall forward. In a fan-captured video, Rucker can be heard laughing at himself, joking, “I’m old as f—” after his fall.

    Later in the show, Rucker further addressed his on-stage stumble with the crowd, once again making a joke out of it.

    “We’ve been doing this all summer,” he said. “I hadn’t fell once. But I busted my a– in my hometown.”

    During his performance at the Tacoma Dome, a fan threw an unknown object onto the stage, which missed Bryan but ended up hitting a member of his band, leading the singer to pause the show and address the crowd.

    In a fan-recorded video, Bryan can be seen walking across the stage to pick the object off the stage, then walking over to a standing microphone to begin scanning the crowd for who had thrown the object.

    “Who threw this?” he asked. “Who was it? Does anybody know?” he continued. “Who we pointing at? Don’t throw s— at concerts, huh?”

    During her show at the Faster Horses Festival at the Michigan International Speedway, Lainey Wilson stepped out on stage in a purple hat, black leather waist and purple bell-bottoms, but ended the show in a different outfit.

    Shortly after walking onto the stage, the “Hang Tight Honey” singer noticed she had split her pants in the back, when, according to the Detroit Free Press, she ran off-stage and changed into a fresh pair of pants.

    “Y’all just about got a real show,” she told the crowd while changing.

    The following day, Wilson poked fun at herself on Instagram, posting a video of herself jumping up and down, dancing and squatting in a pair of brown bell-bottoms and a whole new show outfit.

    “Adding this into my routine before a show so my britches don’t rip like they did last night at faster horses,” she wrote in the clip, adding a crazy smiley face emoji in the caption.

    In a video obtained by Fox News Digital, a pair of hands can be seen reaching out from the trapdoor to brace Martin’s fall and prevent any injuries.

    Value-seekers drove 2024’s retail trends and dead ends


    Value was in vogue in 2024.

    Shoppers and restaurant patrons in the U.S. were choosy about where and how to spend their money as they wrestled with high housing and food prices.

    Well-heeled customers traded down to Walmart and Aldi. Diners opted for fast food or home cooking instead of sit-down restaurants. Department stores struggled as buyers shopped online or at cheaper chains like H&M.

    Residents also moved away from buying furniture or investing in expensive renovations, opting to refresh their homes with inexpensive items like frames and candles.

    Those shifts changed the buying and eating landscape in 2024. As of Dec. 20, Coresight Research tracked 48 retail bankruptcies in the U.S., compared with 25 during the same period a year ago. And at least 22 restaurant chains filed for bankruptcy this year, the highest number since 2020, according to BankruptcyData, a company that tracks filings.

    Here are some of the trends – and dead ends – that The Associated Press tracked in 2024:

    WINNERS:

    WALMART

    The nation’s largest retailer typically shines during tough times as shoppers turn to the discounter for groceries, which account for 60% of Walmart’s total business. And just like during the 2008 Great Recession, Walmart saw households with incomes of $100,000 or above making up more of its clientele. But this time around, company executives think they can keep those customers because they’ve expanded online services and added more stylish clothes and mannequins.

    AMAZON

    Online juggernaut Amazon leaned into its reputation as a destination for deals to appeal to bargain-hungry buyers. In November it launched Amazon Haul, a new low-cost storefront featuring electronics, apparel and other products priced under $20. And the company said its Prime Day event in July resulted in record sales. But Amazon could face headwinds in the coming year with threatened tariffs on products from China and labor unrest in the U.S.

    FAST CASUAL CHAINS

    It was a good year for restaurant chains like Shake Shack that are a step up from fast food but still offer good value. Cava, which specializes in fresh Mediterranean food, said its revenue surged more than 33% in the first nine months of this year as it rapidly built new restaurants. Chipotle got some heat from value-conscious diners about smaller portions, but drew customers back after retraining workers to ensure “consistent and generous” portions.

    JEANS SELLERS

    The wide-leg jeans silhouette – the “it” style that rapidly replaced boot-cut and skinny jeans – drove sales across many different retailers this year. Macy’s, Abercrombie & Fitch, Levi Strauss, Gap and Stitch Fix were among those citing the trend as a big sales booster in recent months. Value-conscious buyers could snap them up at Walmart for $29. At the high end, Gucci had wide-leg versions for $1,200.

    MCDONALD’S

    The year didn’t begin well for McDonald’s. The company’s sales slumped as inflation-weary customers chose to eat at home instead of grabbing fast food. But a $5 meal deal introduced in June helped draw lower-income customers back into stores. McDonald’s extended the deal through the end of this year and said more value is coming in 2025. The fast food giant is working to get customers back after a fall E. coli outbreak linked to raw onions in Quarter Pounder hamburgers sickened at least 104 people in 14 states.

    LOSERS:

    TARGET

    Target’s cheap chic fashions and home decor have long been a big attraction, but the chain faced challenges in 2024. Unlike Walmart, Target is more reliant on discretionary items like clothing because less than a quarter of its sales come from food and beverages. It has always battled a perception of being more expensive, and analysts say its merchandise has lately been in disarray. Still, Target drew crowds on Black Friday with exclusive Taylor Swift products.

    STARBUCKS

    Starbucks had a tough year. Orders are getting increasingly complex, with thousands of ways to customize drinks. That’s leading to long lines and incorrect pickup times on the mobile app. New offerings like olive oil-infused coffee didn’t attract customers, who also grew tired of Starbucks’ high prices. Starbucks hired a new CEO, Brian Niccol, in the fall to help turn things around. But labor strife, which led to strikes in December, could continue to hurt the company in 2025.

    LEGACY RESTAURANTS

    Several decades-old chains threw in the towel in 2024, succumbing to rising competition, changing dining patterns and big portfolios of outdated restaurants. Red Lobster, TGI Fridays and Buca di Beppo all filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and shuttered dozens of locations. A leaner Red Lobster later exited bankruptcy under new ownership, but it remains to be seen whether older chains can turn around years of declining sales.

    BIG TICKET ITEMS

    At the height of the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. consumers took advantage of low interest rates and stimulus benefits to remodel their homes and make other big purchases. But last year, they pulled back. That’s been a challenge for retailers like Best Buy, the nation’s largest consumer electronics chain, which noted lower sales of appliances, home theaters and gaming equipment. Home Depot and Lowe’s also reported lower sales of big-ticket items, particularly discretionary kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects.

    DEPARTMENT STORES

    Department stores, particularly those catering to middle income shoppers, have struggled to hold onto customers as many turn to online shopping or to fast-fashion retailers. Among the worst performers: Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based Kohl’s, which reported its 11th consecutive quarter of sales declines this year. Outgoing CEO Tom Kingsbury recently owned up to merchandising mistakes, including scaling back fine jewelry, popular store label brands and petite sizes. Customers will see those categories return in the coming year.

    Macy’s said it would close 150 namesake stores over three years and open 15 higher-end Bloomingdale’s. Upscale Nordstrom, on the other hand, had a better than expected fiscal year due largely to soaring sales at its off-price Nordstrom Rack stores. Last week, the department store chain agreed to be acquired and taken private by Nordstrom family members and a Mexican retail group. As a private company, Nordstrom may have more leeway and less scrutiny of its efforts to reinvigorate sales.





    In 2024, value-seekers were the driving force behind retail trends, shaping the way consumers shopped and the products they purchased. From seeking out affordable, high-quality goods to prioritizing sustainability and ethical practices, these value-seekers were at the forefront of the retail industry.

    Ranking 2024’s Winners and Losers


    The broadcast bounce is real. As 2024 ends, CBS led the pack in total viewers for the year thanks, of course, to Super Bowl LVIII. No surprise, live sports continues to work its magic for the traditional networks, as NBC was also up year vs. year and even took the adults 18-49 crown for 2024 — bolstered by the tremendously successful Paris Olympics. ABC, meanwhile, was virtually flat (OK, down 1%) from 2023, which these days is a big win — and presumably the Alphabet web was helped by airing more NFL Monday Night Football games this fall.

    Among the Big 4, only Fox was down by double digits — and that can be explained by the fact that it ran the Super Bowl in 2023, so of course it’s going to be down. In cable, unless you were a news network in a major presidential election year, well, it was another year of dramatic declines.

    Tomorrow, Variety will share the ranker of this year’s most-watched primetime telecasts. But here, we recount which networks were up and (mostly) down in 2024.

    WINNERS

    CBS, NBC, ABC: Even though the NFL and other sports coverage gets most of the credit for keeping broadcast afloat, that’s not the only story. This has been a solid fall for the linear nets in entertainment fare as well, which boasts breakout fall hits like CBS’ “Matlock,” ABC’s “High Potential” and NBC’s “Happy’s Place.” Broadcast still matters in 2024, whereas cable… well, we’ll get to that in a second.

    TELEMUNDO: On the Spanish language side, we have quite a smackdown brewing. Perennial leader Univision is still on top, but Telemundo is coming after the crown. NBCU-owned Telemundo was up a whopping 12% this year — tying CBS for the biggest jump in broadcast. (And if you take out special events, Telemundo actually claims the primetime victory in primetime for the first time in history.)

    JUSTICE CENTRAL, AMERICAN CRIMES AND OTHER DIGI-NETS: Perhaps the most interesting trivia of the year comes from the growth of obscure digital networks that mostly exist on over-the-air HD subchannels but also have some satellite, cable and even AVOD carriage. You’ve likely never heard of these networks — and granted, they’re starting from a small base, so their percentage gain can be enormous.

    But here’s something to share at your next cocktail parties: Ask your friends what the two fastest-growing TV networks were in 2024. They’ll never get it right. The answer is Justice Central (up 508%) and American Crimes (up 460%).

    What the hell are those channels? Justice Central is owned by Byron Allen’s company, airing mostly court reality shows he produces. But this year, the network also added old episodes of the original “Matlock” and “Perry Mason” to the mix — hence the rise. Meanwhile, American Crimes is owned by NBC and took the place of its lifestyle NBC LX channel, airing true crime shows from the NBCU library like “Dateline” and “Lockup.” NBCU did absolutely no press on this quiet rebrand — we bet most staffers at the company don’t even know this channel exists, and who knows where in might land in the upcoming SpinCo spinoff — but it seems to be working for the viewers who find it.

    Other digi-nets with strong years include Charge! (up 33%), Dabl (up 38%), Telexitos (up 39%) and TBD TV (up 80%). The secrets to their success vary: Dabl, owned by Paramount but managed by Weigel broadcasting, switched to a comedy format in 2024, airing mostly shows from the early days of UPN (“Girlfriends,” “Moesha,” “Everybody Hates Chris”). Telexitos, owned by NBCU (another one they might want to hold on to?) airs old Spanish TV repeats. Charge!, owned by Sinclair, runs crime dramas like “CSI: Miami.” And TBD, also owned by Sinclair, shifted away from viral videos in 2024 to a mix of comedy repeats like “SNL” and “Key and Peele,” hence the ratings bump.

    MOST “NEWS” NETWORKS: This presidential year, the big story was the expanding dominance of Fox News, which was up a tremendous 30% in viewers to make it the fifth most-watched network in 2024, behind entertainment sibling Fox. MSNBC also remained a top 10 network, at No. 7 but up a more modest 4%. Despite its difficulties, CNN could still find solace at rising 20% and landing at No. 15. Also up 31% was Newsmax, although still at No. 38. The one network that bafflingly didn’t get an election bump? Newsnation, which dropped 1% in 2024.

    BIG TEN NETWORK: While many of the league-based networks saw declines in 2024, including the NFL Network (down 26%) and NBA TV (down 2%), the Big Ten Network saw a bounce as it became the Bigger Ten. The addition of former Pac 12 teams like USC and UCLA must have had an impact, as Big Ten was up 25%.

    LOSERS

    SPIN-OFF CHANNELS: Perhaps the only thing tougher than being a major cable network these days is being the offshoot of a major cable network. Those channels, created in the heyday of cable carriage deal mania, are now often the first to be zombified. And indeed, most of these long ago gave up any promise of original fare and now are completely on autopilot with repeats: FXX (down 29%), Nat Geo Wild (down 29%), Cooking Channel (down 31%), American Heroes (down 27%), MTV 2 (down 31%) among them. Perhaps the saddest slump is VH1, an early MTV spinoff that held its own for decades but was down 38% in 2024.

    KIDS AND TEEN NETWORKS: This is starting to sound like a broken record, as Gen Z and Gen Alpha just aren’t watching linear TV. They’re getting their Disney and Nickelodeon fix on streaming, optimistically. But as YouTube and TikTok also grab their attention, it was another rough year for everyone in this space.

    STARTUPS: Pretty brave to attempt to launch a new network or attempt a big rebrand in the year 2024. So far there isn’t much to show for folks like Dr. Phil’s Merit Street or Scripps News — which was rebranded from Newsy last year. Scripps News won its first News Emmy in September… and then shut down two months later. The channel ceased operations on Nov. 16.


    Below are the primetime rankers for broadcast, cable and premium cable networks in 2024, among total viewers (as well as the top 50 list in adults 18-49). Most Nielsen-rated networks can be found here, with the exception of a few channels that are not ad-supported.

    2024’s $1,000,000 Raffle winning numbers to be announced


    The Idaho Lottery released the two winning ticket numbers for its 2024 Idaho $1,000,000 Raffle. Those who didn’t win other cash prizes are still unclaimed.

    BOISE, Idaho — Idaho residents who purchased tickets for the Idaho Lottery’s 2024 $1,000,000 Raffle should check their numbers, as officials released the winning numbers on Monday, Dec. 30. Two people will become millionaires heading into the New Year.

    The two winning tickets for the $1M grand prize are:

    “Having two, one-million-dollar prizes guaranteed in our annual Idaho $1,000,000 Raffle has really amped up the interest of Idahoans,” said Andrew Arulanandam, Idaho Lottery Director, in a news release. “We thank all players and retailers who made this game a success for the noble and worthy causes who benefit from Idaho Lottery sales.  A friendly reminder to the players holding Idaho $1,000,000 Raffle tickets: please sign your tickets and keep them in a safe place until claiming their prize.”

    The Idaho Lottery said all 450,000 tickets of its 18th edition raffle sold out within 47 days. It said this is the tenth time the game has sold out before Christmas.

    2024’s $1,000,000 Raffle had 17,850 other cash prizes participants could win, the Idaho Lottery said. The prizes ranged from two $10,000 prizes to $15.

    The Idaho lottery also chose 18 random tickets, and the owners won $1,000. It provided a list of the unclaimed tickets for the 2024 raffle.

    Players who win prizes of $1,000 or more must claim their prizes at the Idaho Lottery Offices in Boise. The Idaho Lottery states that players have 180 days to claim their winnings or until June 28, 2025.

    Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok in ‘Nosferatu’ Is 2024’s Sexiest Man


    HE’S SIX FOOT four, with an oval contoured face, deep-hued eyes, and looks that could kill—and frequently do. He’s 2024’s sexiest man alive. No, not inveterate goof John Krasinski, who won People‘s title this year, but the shambling, towering, blood-sucking villain in Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, Count Orlok. (Although whether or not “alive” applies here may lie in the eye of the beholder.)

    Horror fiction, on both the page and screen, popularly characterizes vampires as irresistibly attractive. Twilight’s sparkly mopes, to Interview with the Vampire’s tragic fops, to The Vampire Diaries’ brooding, feuding sibling hunks, Blade‘s naughty vampire god wannabes (or Blade himself, if pale goth men don’t get you percolated). No matter the variations, vampires are primed to stir our thirst, so they can quench theirs without the hassle of a hunt. We associate other monsters in the classic horror canon with carnal instincts too, like werewolves, but bloodsuckers seem to have a monopoly on the erotic temptation of good looks.

    Nosferatu, a remake of the iconic 1922 vampire film which was in turn an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, leans partly into this trope: Orlok’s victims can’t repel his presence. At best, they can merely tolerate his influence, as Eggers’ lead, Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp), has done for most of her life when Nosferatu begins in earnest. The film opens on Ellen in her youth, weeping, lonesome enough to call out for succor from a “guardian angel; a spirit of comfort; a spirit of any celestial sphere; anything.” Orlok certainly is one of those things! Ellen’s plea set off his alarm clock, rousing him from “an eternity of darkness,” and so he answers, mildly crabby over the inconvenience.

    “You are not for the living,” Orlok booms at Ellen, invisible save for his silhouette, slicing against a set of sheer white curtains as they flap in the wind. “You are not for human kind.”

    Moments later, Eggers shows us what kind of party we’ve come to when Ellen winds up outside her family’s sprawling estate. She swears a vow to Orlok to be one with him “ever-eternally,” then, lying in dirt, begins mewling and gasping with pleasure that’s cut short when the Count abruptly materializes over her and clamps one of his grungy claws around her throat; he is hulking and misshapen, gore slicked over his mustache, capped by an exaggerated, uneven hairline that adds to his asymmetry. He roars. Ellen screams. This is not what she thought the man of her dreams would look like.

    Orlok is played by Bill Skarsgård, known best for playing Pennywise the Dancing Clown in It: Chapter One and Chapter Two. Like Orlok, Pennywise is a living nightmare. Unlike Orlok, Pennywise can be thwarted by workaday displays of will. He feeds on fear. (Also, children.) If you check your fear, he’ll shrivel into a corn cob. But Orlok feeds on you. He does not care what you think about his appearance, manner, or diet. If it’s your heart he craves, your heart he will have. It’s typical for vampires to go for the throat, but Eggers, inspired by recorded folklore, embraces the atypical: Skarsgård’s Orlok pins people down and slurps blood straight from their chests instead.

    The good news for the squeamish is that the effect isn’t as disgusting as you’ll imagine. The bad news is that it’s worse. By far one of the most effective aesthetic stimuli Eggers has conjured in any of his movies; this, in conjunction with the effects and makeup that transform Skarsgård from a man into a shambling, mauled carcass, seemingly sloughing off flesh with every passing moment, is fundamental to Nosferatu‘s potency as a work of horror cinema. In Orlok, Eggers and Skarsgård hit new depths of visceral sensation. The character is appalling by nature, and revolting to behold.

    But we can’t turn away. For one, Eggers’ typical audience member knows they’re not in for lighthearted moviegoing; raw stupefaction is a core part of the appeal of The Witch and The Lighthouse, and is backgrounded in The Northman’s brawny mythmaking. If it does not please you that Orlok speaks with a liquid, raspy bass and an alveolar trill, or that he’s a walking rejection of “pretty vampire” clichés, then a refamiliarization with Eggers’ work might be in order. He makes impeccably constructed movies about ugly subjects, where awful fates befall even the most innocent characters. This is as true of The Witch as it is in Nosferatu. But none of Nosferatu’s shocks and chills match the movie’s most terrible revelations: that Orlok can’t be refused, by Ellen, her husband Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), or her friend Anna (Emma Corrin), and moreover, that they like it.

    Orlok visits Thomas and Anna both in due time, in distinct, captivatingly frightening sequences. But Skarsgård invokes the contrasting element of submissive desire in these scenes, alongside Hoult and Corrin, who react to him with fear, yes, and with the same pleasure Depp expresses in the introduction. They are exposed. They are helpless. In their weakened states they enjoy these sensations, in stark opposition to the reality of their characters’ circumstances.

    Orlok is a standout achievement in 2024 horror simply from a creative perspective: a thing that should not be, loathsome and vile and utterly dreadful in each fiber of the character’s conception. But just as importantly, he is the greatest modern embodiment of vampiric allure, though he does not look the part. Sexual rather than sexy, dominant and undeniable, Nosferatu caps off 2024 by striking terror into viewers. They’ll be expecting that. They might not expect the movie, or Orlok himself, to leave them uncomfortably stirred.



    Bill Skarsgård has been cast as Count Orlok in the upcoming remake of the classic vampire film ‘Nosferatu’, and let me tell you, he is 2024’s sexiest man. With his hauntingly beautiful features and mesmerizing performance as the iconic vampire, Skarsgård is sure to steal hearts and send shivers down spines.

    Fans of the original ‘Nosferatu’ will be thrilled to see Skarsgård bring a fresh and modern take to the role, while still paying homage to the eerie and captivating essence of the character.
