  • DrinkWise game preview – Round 17: Wildcats v 36ers

The third-placed Wildcats, who enjoyed a 6-1 record during their seven-game away stint, play their first game in Perth in six weeks, dating all the way back to December 6.

The Red Army will be out in force, with a near sell out crowd expected as the Wildcats kick off a four-game run at home.

Coach John Rillie said while he was pleased with how things were tracking, he urged his team not to get complacent.

    “It’s coming along,” Rillie said.

“We’ll get tested again on Friday night when we return home against Adelaide. I’ve been patient with this team and with the way we are heading. But I am nervous that we may relax. That’s been addressed.”

Import Kristian Doolittle, who’s been building his minutes the past two games after a month on the sidelines with a groin injury, said the team was feeling good after a strong patch of form.

But the key was taking the same energy into the next run of home games as they did on the road.

“We went 6-1 on the road so we feel good right now, understanding we have a lot of home games coming up. We have to take that same energy we’ve been approaching the games with on the road to at home as well,” Doolittle said.

The 36ers have plenty of weapons in their arsenal, highlighted by former NBA star Montrezl Harrell.

Fellow import Kendric Davis is having an impressive debut season in the NBL.

Davis is the second-leading point-scorer in the competition with 25 per game, with Wildcats Superstar Bryce Cotton (28) the only player averaging more.

He’s also got the most assists in NBL25 with 7.65 per game.

Cotton and Davis had a stunning shootout when the two sides met early last month and will be key to success of their respective teams.

Adelaide currently sit just outside of the play-in spots in seventh, with a 10-12 record.

The 36ers have been up and down in form but produced a huge upset over Illawarra at home on Monday with Davis and Harrell combining for a staggering 51 points and 17 rebounds.

Two-time Wildcats championship player Sunday Dech is a huge in for the 36ers after missing more than a month with a hamstring injury.

Dech is likely to be tasked with stopping Cotton.

    Last time they met

The Wildcats have won both of their previous encounters against the 36ers in NBL25, both they are yet to meet at RAC Arena.

Dylan Windler starred last time they met on December 28 at Adelaide Entertainment Centre.

Windler finished with 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four blocks to lead the Wildcats to a 116-92 win.

    Bryce Cotton had a 21-point, 12-rebound double-double to continue his red-hot form.

The Perth Wildcats are set to take on the Adelaide 36ers in Round 17 of the NBL season, and it’s shaping up to be an exciting matchup. Both teams have had their fair share of ups and downs this season, but they will be looking to secure a crucial win in this game.

The Wildcats have been one of the top teams in the league this season, boasting a strong roster led by star players Bryce Cotton and John Mooney. They have been dominant on both ends of the court and will be looking to continue their winning ways against the 36ers.

On the other hand, the 36ers have had a tough season so far, but they have shown flashes of brilliance at times. With players like Daniel Johnson and Brandon Paul leading the way, they will be looking to put up a fight against the Wildcats and pull off an upset victory.

This game is sure to be a thrilling one, with both teams hungry for a win. Make sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Wildcats take on the 36ers in what promises to be a high-stakes showdown. And remember, always DrinkWise and enjoy the game responsibly.

  • 36ers on triple threat high alert

Adelaide 36ers will need to limit the impact of the perimeter in Friday night’s showdown against Perth Wildcats at RAC Arena.

The Wildcats are the second-best team in the league from beyond the arc, connecting on nearly 38 per cent throughout NBL25.

Perth have several  hot shooters, Dylan Windler swished six triples in the Wildcats’ recent win over Adelaide last month.

Adelaide’s renewed and refocused defence will have to be on high alert for the full 40 minutes.

    THE KEY
No guessing for who the key to this game is, Bryce Cotton.

The three-time NBL champion is arguably putting together his greatest season since joining the Wildcats in 2016.

Cotton poured in another 36 points on Wednesday night in Perth’s big win over the Bullets in Brisbane.

With Sunday Dech back in the line-up, expect the former championship teammates to renew their head-to-head battle, but also expect Lat Mayen to get some time on the three-time NBL MVP.

    THE SECRET
After missing a huge chunk of the season with a groin injury, Kristian Doolittle returned to the line-up against the JackJumpers in Tasmania last Sunday.

Doolittle can be a matchwinner at both ends of the floor and expect his defensive assignment to be Kendric Davis.

The 27-year-old can guard multiple positions but can also score if required.

In NBL25 he has increased his offensive output to 11.9 points per game.

    FINAL WORD
Head coach Mike Wells has said all season defence always has to come on the road and there’s no bigger test than at RAC Arena.

Adelaide will need to come out firing early at both ends of the floor, but must use tough defence to spark their offensive firepower.

Cotton no doubt is at the top of the priorities, but the 36ers must use a collective effort to restrict the Perth attack.

With only seven games left in the NBL25 season, Friday night is the right time to make a statement.

    DrinkWise Preview: NBL25 – Round 15 v Adaleide 36ers

Melbourne United will look to start the new year with a bang when we head on the road for a matchup with the Adelaide 36ers.

Having registered a pair of 20-point wins in our previous games against the Sixers in NBL25, we will be hoping to make it a clean sweep of our three regular season matchups on Saturday.

A win would ensure we would stay in a top-two position on the ladder, while a defeat could see the team drop as low as fourth on the table.

For Adelaide, every game is a must-win as they look to lift themselves up into a play-in spot.

    WHO’S HOT, WHO’S NOT

    (Past five games)
    United – L, L, L, L, W

    36ers – W, L, L, L, W

After allowing four straight games of 97 or more points, all of which were losses, our defence looked back to its suffocating best against the Taipans on Boxing Day.

Dean Vickerman will be preaching the importance of continuing this defensive consistency, as when holding teams under 90 points, we have won our past eight game.

It’s a similar story for Adelaide, who conceded more points per game than any other team in the competition.

When conceding more than 100 points this season, the Sixers have a 0-10 record. In both previous games against Adelaide, we have scored an average of 109.5 points.

    STARS COLLIDE

Through both of our matchups with the 36ers this season, we have done a strong job of keeping their stars in check.

While Kendrick Davis has averaged 23.5 points across the two games, this has mostly come on the back of his 26 made free-throws, with the American averaging just five made field-goals per game.

This is a result of tight defence by the league’s best rim protector, Marcus Lee, who has tallied five blocks against Adelaide this season.

Vasiljevic says 36ers must continue to rise

Adelaide 36ers captain DJ Vasiljevic said his side has to build on last Monday night’s road win in Sydney when Melbourne United visit the Entertainment Centre on Saturday.

Vasiljevic said he was proud with the way the team responded against the Kings, with an increased intensity at both ends of the floor in the 111-96 success.

“We came out desperate last game, and we got to continue this going into the New Year,” Vasiljevic said.

“We need to find an identity defensively. We can have all the Xs and Os, but if we don’t come desperate, what’s the point of writing everything on the board.

“We came out hungry and we set the tone.”

Vasiljevic expects the home fans to be extra loud with United coming to Adelaide for the first time since the on-court incidents at John Cain Arena on November 17 which led to suspensions of Montrezl Harrell and Kendric Davis.

“It will be packed out, it will be very hostile, and it will be exciting,” Vasiljevic said.

“It’s great for the league, it’s going to be prime time, so let’s jump ball and play.

“It’s a revenge game for us, we know what they did to us last time.”

Vasiljevic said the side has put in place expectations within the group at a meeting before the win against the Kings, which will benefit the group moving forward.

“There are no issues, it’s just let’s simplify the game plan and play hungry basketball,” Vasiljevic said.

“Everyone has bought in, from the myself, the players, the staff, management, we are all in this together.

“There is still a chance (for the playoffs) and it can be done, I’ve done it before in Sydney when we won the first championship.

“We will stick together and keep moving forward.”

The Adelaide 36ers have been on a rollercoaster ride this season, but head coach Connor Vasiljevic believes that the team must continue to rise in order to reach their full potential.

Despite some ups and downs, the 36ers have shown flashes of brilliance and have the talent to compete with the best teams in the league. Vasiljevic knows that consistency is key, and he is pushing his players to bring their A-game every night.

“We have a lot of talent on this team, but we need to stay focused and continue to work hard,” Vasiljevic said. “We can’t afford to get complacent or let our guard down. We need to keep pushing ourselves to improve and elevate our game.”

The 36ers have shown that they have what it takes to be a playoff contender, but they will need to stay hungry and stay focused in order to make a deep run. Vasiljevic believes in his team and is confident that they have what it takes to succeed.

Kings chase top two as 36ers hope to defy record

Kings chase top two as 36ers hope to defy record

WHILE the 2024/25 NBL season has been far from perfect for perennial contenders Sydney Kings, they could finish the year with 12 wins from 20 games and sit third heading into January. The Kings remain in that position and just just two victories off the top two with a couple of games in hand to Melbourne United. Tonight, they take on an Adelaide 36ers outfit desperate for a win, and with a horrid away record this season.

    Sydney Kings vs. Adelaide 36ers

    Qudos Bank Arena, 7:30pm AEDT

Position Team Games Wins Losses Percentage
    3rd Sydney Kings 19 11 8 105.34
    8th Adelaide 36ers 18 7 11 93.12

When Isaac Humphries revealed the 36ers playing group was struggling to know each individual’s role given the high turnover of the list, it sent alarm bells through interested parties. While externally that exactly appeared to be the case, the confirmation of such uncertainty was still an uneasy thing to hear, particularly for Adelaide fans.

On paper, the 36ers have some seriously talented players – particularly bigs – and on their day if everything can click, they should be able to challenge the best sides. Unfortunately not much has gone to play this year and despite boasting such quality talls, rank last for rebounds, and concede more points and assists than any other side, as well as being in the bottom two for opposition field goal percentage and three-point percentage.

They are damning stats that suggest offensively they are just below middle of the road – sixth for points and seventh for assists – but defensively, they are arguably the worst in the competition. It is something that will need to change on the run if they are to have any chance of sneaking into a Play-In spot with half a dozen rounds remaining in the NBL season.

As it stands, the 36ers have lost seven of their past eight, with a sole 17-point win over New Zealand – currently on an eight-game losing streak – the only success since mid-November. In that time, they have lost to Brisbane and Perth twice, as well as United, the Phoenix and JackJumpers. They did beat Illawarra on November 10, which at that stage the 36ers were 6-10 and had won six of their past eight. Then it all went pair shaped.

In the only other contest between the sides, Adelaide won 89-79, but Sydney’s season as a whole has gone far better. With the exception of a form slump for three games late in October, the Kings have bounced back to win six of the past night. Though a three-point loss to Illawarra on Christmas Day is something the Kings will look to atone for against the 36ers.

A key watch will be who can get their hands on the rock more out of Kendric Davis and Jaylen Adams. Both are superb distributors and lead their sides for assists, with more than six and a half per match. Five Sydney players averaged double-digit points and have been available for most of the season. Adams (15.9 points) is just behind former league MVP Xavier Cooks (16.0), with Cook also averaging a well-balanced 8.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists.

Cameron Oliver and Alex Toohey can provide great support off the boards, while Keil Leaupepe has shown plenty to suggest he will only get better from here. Kouat Noi is a three-point machine, firing off two makes per game from long-range for an average of 12.1 points in the 2024/25 season.

The going has been much tougher for the 36ers, with Davis and fellow import Montrezl Harrell doing much of the heavy lifting. Davis (23.6 points, 7.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals) and Harrell (19.1 points, 8.8 rebounds) are having great seasons despite the team form, while Dejan Vasiljevic and Humphries will always provide support from long-range and in the paint respectively.

After that it drops off for the 36ers though, and with the second worst away record in the league (1-6), they face a stiff challenge up at Qudos Bank Arena. The Kings are hit and miss there (4-3), but should be refreshed and ready to go to head into the new year with a win.

TIP = Sydney Kings by 17

The race for the top two spots in the NBL standings is heating up as the Sydney Kings are hot on the heels of the current leaders. Meanwhile, the Adelaide 36ers are hoping to defy the odds and make a late-season push to secure a playoff spot.

The Kings have been on a tear recently, winning seven of their last eight games and closing the gap on the top two teams. Led by star player Casper Ware, the Kings have shown that they have what it takes to compete with the best in the league and are determined to make a run for the top spot.

On the other hand, the 36ers have had a rollercoaster season so far, but they are not giving up hope just yet. Despite facing tough competition and dealing with injuries, the 36ers are still in the playoff hunt and are looking to make a statement in the final stretch of the season.

As the race for the top two spots intensifies, fans can expect some thrilling matchups and intense competition as teams battle it out for playoff positioning. Will the Kings be able to overtake the current leaders? Can the 36ers defy the odds and secure a playoff spot? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – the stakes are high and the competition is fierce. Stay tuned for all the action as the NBL season heats up!

Adelaide will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak on the road when the 36ers play Sydney Kings at Qudos Bank Arena on Monday night.

The 36ers have won just one game away from Adelaide Entertainment Centre so far in NBL25, a 102-100 win against Illawarra Hawks in Wollongong on October 5, and head coach Mike Wells says defense is the key to road success.

“Our group has got to come together, and that starts at the defensive end,” Wells said.

“You got to be able to defend and you got to be able to have a plan and be organised out there.

“Especially on the road, your defence is going to set the tone, your offense is going to come and go, you’re going to hit shots, you’re going to miss shots.

“The way you win your road games is on the defensive end.”

Adelaide will travel to Sydney looking to bounce back and keen to keep the NBL25 season alive after winning only one out of the past eight matches.

Captain DJ Vasiljevic will return to the Harbour City for the first time since his move from the Kings to Adelaide last season and also said defence was the key to victory.

Vasiljevic says 36ers keen to bounce back

Returning Adelaide 36ers captain DJ Vasiljevic said his side is ready to bounce back in Saturday night’s showdown against Perth Wildcats at the Entertainment Centre.

After going down 111-90 to Brisbane Bullets at home on Christmas Eve, Vasiljevic said his side is primed to make a statement.

“The mood wasn’t great (after the Bullets loss), everyone is over losing,” Vasiljevic told NBL Now.

“We have been giving up over 105 points per game, it’s not about tactics, it’s about pride on that end.

“We have to lock in defensively if we want to make a run.”

Head coach Mike Wells said his side will look to make adjustments at the defensive end and was clear when asked how he spent his first Christmas in Adelaide.

    “Watching Perth,” Wells said.

Vasiljevic returns after missing the past five matches with a hamstring issue, and the captain can’t wait to get back out on the court.

“I was sick of sitting there watching, I want to be out there,” Vasiljevic said.

“When I’m out there I can spread the floor, I’m a threat from the outside, which will open up some opportunities for my teammates.”

The 36ers captain said his side need to bounce back in front of what will be the 10th straight home game sellout this season

“The effort, the energy, the rebounding, it all starts with us,” Vasiljevic said.

“We can’t let our offense dictate how the game goes, we got to lock up defensively.”
