Notre Dame to No. 2 in women’s AP Top 25; South Carolina 4th
Notre Dame moved up to No. 2 in The Associated Press women’s basketball Top 25 on Monday for the Irish’s best ranking since 2019.
The Fighting Irish replaced South Carolina in the second spot behind UCLA after the Gamecocks lost 66-62 to Texas over the weekend. It is Notre Dame’s best ranking since the team was No. 1 on Jan. 21, 2019.
The Bruins remained the unanimous No. 1 choice of the 31-member media panel.
The Longhorns climbed to third with their victory. South Carolina dropped to fourth after seeing its 57-game conference winning streak in the regular season come to an end.
No. 5 LSU and No. 6 USC followed the Gamecocks, each moving up one spot after UConn lost at then-No. 19 Tennessee last week. The Huskies fell two places to seventh. Tennessee, which lost to LSU on Sunday, moved up four spots to 15th.
Kentucky moved up to eighth, giving the Wildcats their best ranking since Dec. 8, 2015, when they were seventh. Ohio State was ninth and NC State jumped up four places to 10th. The Wolfpack had wins over then-No. 10 Duke and 22nd-ranked Florida State last week.
WHO’S IN; WHO’S OUT
Creighton and Baylor came into the poll at No. 24 and 25 while Vanderbilt and California dropped out. The Bluejays were ranked in the preseason Top 25 before falling out. Baylor has been in and out of the poll a few times this season.
MILESTONE
The appearance this week was UConn’s 600th straight in the poll. It’s the longest streak ever and dates back to the preseason poll in 1993. South Carolina has the next longest active streak with 242 consecutive weeks in the Top 25.
RECOGNITION
Grand Canyon received its first vote in the poll as the Lopes were ranked 25th on a ballot. The program underwent the transition to Division I in 2013, joining the Western Athletic Conference that season. They are 22-2 this season and have won 20 consecutive games after losses to Middle Tennessee and Oregon.
CONFERENCE BREAKDOWN
The Southeastern Conference still reigns with seven ranked teams. The ACC has six, the Big Ten and Big 12 each have five, and the Big East has two.
GAMES OF THE WEEK
No. 1 UCLA at No. 6 USC (Thursday): First place will be on the line when the Bruins visit the Trojans in the first of two meetings over the next few weeks.
No. 7 UConn at No. 4 South Carolina (Sunday): The Huskies will have their last chance to get a victory against a top opponent before the NCAA tournament.
No. 5 LSU at No. 3 Texas (Sunday): Two of the three teams atop the SEC face off in a key conference showdown.
In a recent update to the women’s AP Top 25 rankings, Notre Dame has surged to the No. 2 spot, with South Carolina following closely behind in 4th place. This marks a significant rise for Notre Dame, showcasing their impressive performance and strength on the court. South Carolina, a perennial powerhouse in women’s college basketball, continues to demonstrate their dominance and skill. It will be exciting to see how these top-ranked teams fare as the season progresses. #WomensBasketball #APTop25 #NotreDame #SouthCarolina

Aston Villa vs. Tottenham Hotspur: FA Cup 4th round game time, live blog, and how to watch online
All the good Tottenham Hotspur vibes that had started to build again over the last few weeks went straight out the window following Liverpool’s demolition of the Lilywhites in the EFL Cup midweek. There’s no time for Spurs to lick their wounds, however, with a short turnaround before today’s match against Aston Villa.
Spurs are in the fourth round courtesy of a labored victory over National League side Tamworth, and Villa are just a few rungs higher on the English football ladder. The Villains will be fresh as well, having had the week off to prepare while Spurs crashed out of another cup competition.
Regardless, Ange Postecoglou will be keen to turn things around, with a little help from his January reinforcements. Two of those, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel, were able to hold their heads high in the defeat to Liverpool, and will surely be in the starting lineup with injuries aplenty both in defense and the forward line. Can Spurs overcome whatever fresh hell the universe serves up this time and come away victorious?

Harshit Rana made his T20I debut for India under unusual circumstances when he was bought in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube in the 4th India vs England encounter in Pune on Friday.
Rana made instant impact when he came on the field in the 8th over and took the catch of England skipper Jos Buttler who after getting dismissed wasn’t happy and had a chat with the coaching staff in the England dug-out.
With Rana on the field, India had an extra bowling option at their disposal with the Kolkata Knight Riders pacer striking instantly with the ball in hand in the 12th over when he snapped up Liam Livingstone.
He would strike again in the 16th over when he sent back Jacob Bethell for just 6 runs.
The decision courted quite a bit of controversy online with a pacer replacing an allrounder with experts pointing out that it was not a like for like substitution.
India, however, have been in this situation before as well when back in 2020, Yuzvendra Chahal came in as a concussion substitute for Ravindra Jadeja in a T20I game against Australia and ended up being the player of the match for his three wickets.
The concussion rule
Rule 1.2.7.3 of the ICC playing conditions for concussion substitution states: “The ICC Match Referee should ordinarily approve a Concussion Replacement Request if the replacement is a like-for-like player whose inclusion will not excessively advantage his team for the remainder of the match.” Rule 1.2.7.7 states: “The decision of the ICC Match Referee in relation to any Concussion Replacement Request shall be final and neither team shall have any right of appeal.”

In 2019, ICC general manager (cricket) Geoff Allardice tried to clarify the ‘like-for-like’ issue. “Every circumstance is going to be different depending on when the player is requested to be replaced,” Allardice told reporters at Edgbaston, adding: “…it’s very much around what is the likely role of the injured player for rest of the match and who is most like-for-like with the role that player will play.”

In the recent IND vs ENG 4th T20I match, there was a controversial moment when Harshit Rana was allowed to bowl after coming in as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube. Many fans were left puzzled by this decision and questioned the validity of Rana’s participation in the match.According to the rules set by the International Cricket Council (ICC), a player can be replaced by a concussion substitute if they are deemed unfit to continue playing due to a head injury. In this case, Shivam Dube suffered a blow to the head and was unable to continue, leading to Rana being brought in as a substitute.
However, the rules also state that the concussion substitute can only perform the role of the player they are replacing. In this case, Dube is an all-rounder and a bowler, so Rana was allowed to bowl in his place. This decision was made to ensure that the integrity of the game is maintained and that the team is not unfairly disadvantaged by the loss of a player.
While some may argue that Rana should not have been allowed to bowl as a substitute, it is important to remember that the rules are in place to protect the safety and well-being of the players. In this instance, the match officials deemed Rana’s participation as a substitute to be within the rules, and the game continued as normal.
Ultimately, it is up to the match officials to make these decisions based on the circumstances of the match. As fans, we may not always agree with their rulings, but we must trust that they are acting in the best interest of the game and the players involved.

Toss England chose to bowl vs India
Jos Buttler finally won a toss in the five-match T20I series and gave England their first shot at chasing a target. The pitch was on the drier side, but the fear of the dew proved to be the deciding factor at the toss. Having lost the first two matches, England were playing their second must-win match in a row.
England made two changes to their XI, resting Mark Wood for Saqib Mahmood and bringing back Jacob Bethell for Jamie Smith, who walked off with a stiff calf during the third match, England’s only win in the series.India welcomed back Rinku Singh, who missed two matches with injury and took back the slot kept warm by Dhruv Jurel. Mohammed Shami’s comeback was halted at one match as Arshdeep Singh came back in his place. The big change, though, was the introduction of Shivam Dube in place of Washington Sundar, who provides a spin option but nowhere near the batting fire power that Dube does.India 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Sanju Samson (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav (capt.), 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Shvam Dube, 7 Rinku Singh, 8 Axar Patel, 9 Arshdeep Singh, 10 Ravi Bishnoi, 11 Varun Chakravarthy
England 1 Phil Salt (wk), 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Jos Buttler (capt.), 4 Harry Brook, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jacob Bethell, 7 Jamie Overton, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Saqib Mahmood, 11 Adil Rashid
In a thrilling encounter between India and England in the 4th T20I match of the series, India emerged victorious by 5 wickets on January 31, 2025.England won the toss and elected to bat first, posting a competitive total of 175/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Opener Jason Roy top-scored with 56 runs, while Liam Livingstone chipped in with a quickfire 35 off 18 balls. For India, Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/30.
In response, India got off to a steady start with openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw putting on a solid partnership. However, England fought back with quick wickets, reducing India to 98/4 in the 13th over. It was then that captain Virat Kohli took charge, scoring a brilliant unbeaten 78 off just 42 balls to guide India to victory with an over to spare.
India reached the target with 5 wickets in hand, thanks to Kohli’s masterful innings. The win helped India level the series at 2-2, setting up a thrilling decider in the final T20I.
Overall, it was a pulsating match that showcased the talent and fighting spirit of both teams. Fans can look forward to an exciting conclusion to the series in the final T20I between India and England.

India vs England 4th T20I Live Score: Leading 2-1 in the 5-match series, Suryakumar Yadav’s India take on Jos Buttler’s England in the fourth match at Gahunje Stadium as the hosts look to seal series.India had an opportunity to take unassailable series lead in Rajkot but faltered in 172 chase.
Shami’s inclusion in the previous match forced the team to rest left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, as India opted for a spin-heavy attack featuring Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, and Ravi Bishnoi.
However, unlike the spin-friendly surface used for the October Test against New Zealand, the pitch for this game is expected to be more balanced. This could prompt India to bring back Arshdeep and Rinku, possibly at the expense of Sundar or Bishnoi and wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel.
Rinku, who missed the last two games due to lower back spasms, was fit and available for selection during India’s practice session on Thursday. England, meanwhile, chose to skip training.
A fascinating battle looms between India’s spin attack and England’s premier leg-spinner Adil Rashid.
Bishnoi, who has struggled in the series—conceding 95 runs in 12 overs for just one wicket—was particularly expensive in the last game, leaking two fours and five sixes. Given England’s aggressive approach, India will need a well-thought-out bowling strategy.
The surface is expected to offer some assistance to the bowlers, but Indian batters cannot afford to take England’s pace attack, led by Jofra Archer, lightly.
In the previous game, England successfully restricted India for 43 consecutive deliveries in the middle overs, a key factor in their victory. Coach Gautam Gambhir will likely address this issue as India look to avoid another batting collapse.
Hardik Pandya remains a crucial asset due to his all-round abilities, but questions linger over his strike rate when batting before the 10th over.
Skipper Suryakumar Yadav will also have to ensure better utilization of resources—Jurel was sent in too late in the last match, while Axar Patel was under-bowled, and Washington Sundar’s lone over proved costly.
England’s victory in Rajkot marked only India’s third defeat.
India will be taking on England in the 4th T20I of the series today, with England winning the toss and opting to bowl first. In a surprising move, India has made some changes to their playing XI, with Arshdeep Singh, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube coming in for the match. The trio will be looking to make an impact and help India secure a victory in this crucial game.

Big picture: Series alive, using contrasting methods
The five-match series between India and England was expected to be a high-scoring one. A battle of sixes if you will. But three games in, this hasn’t been the case, but the series has by no means been devoid of thrills. It’s 2-1 going into Friday night in Pune, and it’s the bowling attacks that have stood out, in contrasting ways. While India have stacked their side with as many as four spin options, England have primarily relied on hitting the short-of-good lengths and undoing India with high pace: Mark Wood and Jofra Archer have tried to soften up the batters in the powerplay before handing over to Brydon Carse and Jamie Overton to pound the hard lengths through the middle overs.India have fielded just the one frontline quick – Arshdeep Singh in the first two games and the returning Mohammed Shami in the third – and used every type of spin at their disposal. England have not really found a way past them, but remain alive in the series thanks to their great escape in Rajkot led by Adil Rashid, who bowled a wily spell of legspin following a last-wicket rescue act alongside Wood. With the track in Pune also likely to favour spin, Rashid could revel once again, but it will only present Varun Chakravarthy and his spin colleagues another chance to get at England’s struggling batters.
India LWWWW (Last five completed T20Is, most recent first)
England WLLLWIn the spotlight: Sanju Samson and Phil Salt
Last October, Sanju Samson was given the chance to claim ownership of a top-two slot in India’s T20I line-up. And he set about it in fine fashion, scoring three centuries in five outings. One of them was in Johannesburg on a bouncy surface against the likes of Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen. But Samson hasn’t quite mastered the pace of Mark Wood and Jofra Archer in this series. He has scores of 26, 5 and 3 so far, and has tended to get dismissed while being late on his shots. This may not yet be a cause for alarm for Samson or the India team mangement, given the next T20 World Cup is a fair distance away. But runs in a game India need to win to seal the series could go a long way towards raising both Samson’s and the team’s confidence.Having given blazing starts to champions Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024, Phil Salt was expected to set the tone for England on his first tour of India since. His last international series was also a productive one, bringing him an unbeaten 103 and a 55 against West Indies in the Caribbean. But his three outings in this series have yielded 0, 4 and 5, even if he hasn’t really looked out of touch. Can Salt overturn this run of scores as England look to push the series into a decider?India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said Rinku Singh batted on Thursday and is fit. This could mean Dhruv Jurel misses out. India could also look at an additional seam-bowling allrounder in Shivam Dube or Ramandeep Singh instead of Washington Sundar.
India (probable XI): 1 Abhishek Sharma, 2 Sanju Samson (wk), 3 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 4 Tilak Varma, 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Rinku Singh, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Washington Sundar/Ramandeep Singh, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Ravi Bishnoi, 11 Varun Chakravarthy.
England did not train on the eve of the match. Jamie Smith had walked off in the third T20I with a stiff calf, so there could be a straight swap with Jacob Bethell, whom he had replaced in Chennai. England could also look at giving either Wood or Archer a break and play Saqib Mahmood.
England (probable XI): 1 Phil Salt (wk), 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Jos Buttler (capt), 4 Harry Brook, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jamie Smith/Jacob Bethell, 7 Jamie Overton, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Mark Wood, 11 Adil Rashid.
Evenings in Maharashtra have been on the cooler side with temperature in Pune expected to be in the late teens through the duration of the game. Teams batting first have tended to win more matches at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium: 35 times in 64 men’s T20 matches. The pitch is generally a black-soil one that favours spinners. Mitchell Santner picked up 13 wickets in a Test against India in October 2024, and then the only Ranji Trophy match here this season saw spinners take 34 of 39 non-run-out wickets.
“Regardless of how it went, it is so happy to see him playing for India again. It’s been a long time since he has played. He has been such a performer for the team. I thought he bowled well, apart from maybe that full-toss. Nice to see him build up in training again tonight.”
Ryan ten Doeschate on Mohammed Shami’s return“We are moving in the right direction. I am really happy with the style we are trying to play and continuing to be aggressive and taking the shots on.”
England captain Jos Buttler is glad that their batting methods finally bought them a win
