  • Explosion at Troy medical facility leaves 5-year-old dead after hyperbaric chamber blows up

Officials in Troy confirmed a child died after an explosion at a medical center Friday morning.

Fire and police officials said the boy died after a hyperbaric chamber blew up at a center on Kirts Boulevard.

    What we know:

Units from the Troy fire and police departments responded to 165 Kirts Blvd in Troy around 8 a.m. Friday morning following reports of an explosion.

A 5-year-old boy was killed after a hyperbaric chamber blew up inside the building. His mom, who was next to the chamber at the time, also suffered injuries to her arms.

The deceased was a resident of Royal Oak.

Upon arrival, fire officials dealt with a fire inside the chamber. It was contained to the room. Medical staff also at the building were not injured in the explosion.

“Shortly after 8 a.m. this morning, Troy Fire and Police Department responded to a medical facility at 165 Kirtz Boulevard for a report of a hyperbaric chamber explosion with a child still inside the chamber,” said fire Lt. Keith Young.

While the scene is still active, the facility is secure.

    What we don’t know:

Police only had preliminary information and did not know what was the cause of the explosion.

It’s also unclear what the child was being treated for while in the chamber.

Officials are still working to confirm what accreditation the center had and whether it was allowed to operate a hyperbaric chamber.

    What’s next:

Social workers from the Oakland Community Health Network will be available to work with emergency personnel who responded to the scene, as well as medical staff at the facility.

Because the state oversees these centers, the investigation will involve multiple jurisdictions, Young said.

    What is a hyperbaric chamber?

    Dig deeper:

A hyperbaric chamber is a pressurized room or container that has 100% oxygen inside.

According to the Mayo Clinic, patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy use it to treat a condition called decompression sickness, which occurs due to rapid drops in the surrounding pressure.

The goal is to get more oxygen to tissue in the body that’s been damaged by disease or injury.

In a hyperbaric chamber, the air pressure is increased two to three times higher than normal air pressure. That way, lungs can receive more oxygen, which can enhance new growth of blood vessels and boost one’s immune system.

Because the chamber is pressurized, it can become highly combustible.

“A hyperbaric chamber contains 100% oxygen, which is up to five times the amount of oxygen in a normal room. The presence of such a high amount of oxygen in a pressurized environment can make it extremely combustible,” Young said.

He added these kinds of explosions are extremely uncommon.

On the morning of June 15th, tragedy struck at a medical facility in Troy as a hyperbaric chamber exploded, resulting in the death of a 5-year-old child. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning the loss of a young life.

The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest that a malfunction in the hyperbaric chamber may have been the catalyst for the tragic event. Emergency responders rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance, but unfortunately, the child could not be saved.

The medical facility has been closed while authorities conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and loved ones of the young child who lost their life in this devastating accident.

(CBS DETROIT) — A 5-year-old Michigan boy was killed Friday morning when a hyperbaric chamber he was inside of exploded, officials said.

Troy police and firefighters responded to a medical facility in Troy around 8 a.m. Friday for a report of a hyperbaric chamber explosion. When emergency responders arrived at the facility, they found the boy, from Royal Oak, dead inside the chamber.

The boy’s mother, who was near the chamber when it exploded, suffered injuries to her arms. No one else was injured in the explosion.

Police did not say what the child was being treated for.

Police and fire officials have not determined the cause of the explosion. Crews were able to contain the fire in the room.

a hyperbaric chamber is an enclosed space that delivers pure oxygen to the body with higher than normal air pressure, according to the Mayo Clinic. During the oxygen therapy in the chamber, air pressure is increased 2 to 3 times higher than normal air pressure.

Hyperbaric chambers can be used for life-saving, limb-saving, and tissue-saving treatments, as well as for other treatments, such as low red blood cell counts caused by blood loss and sudden hearing loss from an unknown cause.

Because a hyperbaric chamber contains such a high amount of oxygen in a pressurized space, it can be extremely combustible.

Social workers with the Oakland Community Health Network are working with first responders and medical staff who responded to the scene.

An investigation is ongoing. The medical facility is closed until further notice.

Tragic News: 5-year-old Michigan Boy Killed in Hyperbaric Chamber Explosion

In a devastating incident, a 5-year-old boy from Michigan lost his life in a hyperbaric chamber explosion. The young child, whose name has not been released, was undergoing treatment in the chamber when the explosion occurred.

Hyperbaric chambers are often used for medical purposes, such as treating certain medical conditions like carbon monoxide poisoning or promoting wound healing. However, the exact circumstances surrounding this tragic incident are still unclear.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion and are working to determine what went wrong. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young boy during this incredibly difficult time.

It serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of safety measures and proper protocols when using medical equipment. We hope that the investigation will provide answers and prevent such a tragedy from happening again in the future.

  • Unsupervised 5-year-old wandered out of a Boise school and was hit by a car, claim says

Unsupervised 5-year-old wandered out of a Boise school and was hit by a car, claim says

In late August, a 5-year-old boy wandered out of a South Boise school and into its parking lot, where he was struck by a vehicle, according to a claim filed by the boy’s family.

The Dec. 23 tort claim, a precursor to a lawsuit, accused Ada County, the city of Boise and Desert Sage Elementary of “negligent acts” that breached their duty to “supervise, care for and otherwise protect” the school’s students.

The boy sustained serious injuries, and his treatment was ongoing as of late December, the claim said. The family estimated medical costs would surpass $5,000 — and said that for emotional and other damages, it may sue for over $500,000.

The boy’s name was redacted from the copy of the tort claim the Idaho Statesman obtained through a public records request.

It was not clear why Boise was named in the claim, since the school is located outside city limits at 9325 W. Mossywood Drive, southwest of the intersection between West Lake Hazel Road and South Maple Grove Road. Sometimes people file tort claims against more entities than they later sue.

Kelby Monks, the family’s attorney, declined to comment. Desert Sage Principal Beau Dahlgren and Niki Scheppers, a spokesperson for the West Ada School District, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Spokespeople for the city of Boise and Ada County commissioners declined to comment, citing the pending litigation.

The family was not aware of any witnesses to the incident as of late December, according to the claim.

A tort is a wrongful act other than a breach of contract for which victims may seek damages or an injunction, the Merriam-Webster dictionary says. Idaho law requires people who may sue the state or a local government to file claims to give government agencies the chance to address the complaint before a lawsuit is filed. Some claims are settled without becoming lawsuits.

This is a tragic incident that should have never happened. According to a recent claim, a 5-year-old child wandered out of an unsupervised area at a Boise school and was hit by a car. This is a stark reminder of the importance of proper supervision and safety protocols in schools. Our thoughts are with the child and their family during this difficult time. It is crucial that steps are taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. #Boise #SchoolSafety #ChildSafety
