‘It’s absurd’: Mexicans mock and shrug off Trump’s order to rename Gulf of Mexico
CNN
—
When Google announced it was complying with US President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, many Mexicans responded with a laugh and a long, exhausted sigh.
At her daily press briefing on Tuesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum largely shrugged off Google’s move, noting that Trump’s order only applies to the US continental shelf, suggesting that her country would not abide by it.
“The Gulf of Mexico is still the Gulf of Mexico,” she said.
Many of her fellow Mexicans have been similarly dismissive.
On social media, users shared images poking fun at what some called Trump’s “obsession” with their country and the unorthodox nature of his decision. Some soccer fans suggested sarcastically that Trump was paying tribute to the popular Mexican football team, Club América.
But not everyone is laughing. In an editorial for the Mexican newspaper El Universal, legal expert Mario Melgar-Adalid advised the country to push back.
“Mexico must firmly oppose this interference, otherwise the next step could be that instead of the United Mexican States (Mexico’s formal name), as established in our Constitution, they will begin to call us Old Mexico,” he wrote.
In the Mexican coastal state of Veracruz, which borders the gulf, Governor Rocío Nahle rejected Trump’s move. “Today and always … for 500 years it has been and will continue to be our rich and great ‘Gulf of Mexico,’” the governor wrote on social media last week.
Juan Cobos, a former resident of Veracruz who now lives in Mexico City, called it “absurd,” saying hundreds of years of history could not be erased by a pen stroke.
“You can’t change something overnight, what we’ve grown up with – history, geography, all that. You can’t be so authoritarian that you can change it from one day to the next.”
Another resident told CNN that “many Veracruzanos express annoyance, others confusion, and for many it is amusing … because people do not care that the name of the Gulf of Mexico will soon change, and they find it fun to play with the name change.”
Another Mexico City resident called Trump’s order “so childish,” telling CNN, “Obviously it is not right.”
Google said on Monday its move was in line with its “practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.” The company noted that the change would be applied only in the United States. Users in Mexico will continue to see the “Gulf of Mexico” on Google Maps. The rest of the world will see both names.
Trump, in his executive order last week, said he directed that the body of water be renamed the Gulf of America “in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our nation’s economy and its people.” The order calls for all federal government maps and documents to reflect the change.
He also ordered that the nation’s highest mountain, Denali, change its name back to Mount McKinley, in honor of President William McKinley. Google said it would also update the name of its maps when the Geographic Names Information System, a government database of names and location data, is updated.
Sheinbaum responded with ridicule at the time. At a press conference, she presented a 1607 map that labeled parts of North America as “Mexican America,” and dryly proposed that the gulf should be renamed as such.
She said: “It sounds nice, no?”
“It’s absurd”: Mexicans mock and shrug off Trump’s order to rename Gulf of MexicoPresident Trump’s recent order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” has sparked outrage and disbelief among Mexicans. Many have taken to social media to mock the decision, calling it ridiculous and unnecessary.
One Twitter user wrote, “As if changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America will change anything. It’s just absurd.” Another user joked, “I guess we should start calling the United States the ‘United States of Mexico’ now.”
Despite the backlash, the Mexican government has yet to issue an official response to Trump’s order. Some have speculated that they are simply ignoring the issue in order to avoid giving it more attention.
Overall, Mexicans seem to be taking Trump’s latest move in stride, with many choosing to laugh it off rather than get upset. As one user put it, “At the end of the day, it’s just a name. The Gulf will always be the Gulf of Mexico to us.”

Sherlock meets ‘House’ in absurd drama
If you wanted a perfect encapsulation of the chaotic state of TV in 2025, look no further than CBS’ Sherlock Holmes-inspired procedural, “Watson.”
The new series, starring perennial network hunk Morris Chestnut, is utterly nonsensical and ridiculous, and also familiar enough to be derivative. It’s one part “House”: A medical mystery in which where Chestnut’s Watson and a team of attractive young doctors diagnose perplexing illnesses in a Pittsburgh clinic due to their collective eccentric genius. And then you remember that Chestnut is playing Dr. John Watson, Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick, and your brain explodes a little bit.
The two parts of “Watson” (premiering Sunday, 10 EST/PST, ★½ out of four) don’t fit together. The medical procedural is fine, bland and perfectly standard CBS. But then a patient-of-the-week drama gets crashed together with this half-hearted Sherlock mythology and the wheels fall right off.
It’s ridiculous and kind of funny sometimes, especially in the last few minutes of the premiere, which go in a direction you completely expect but in a way you certainly don’t see coming. It’s not a happy marriage of two TV shows, but rather a nonconsensual cohabitation of two ideas with entirely different tones and themes smoothed over by Chestnut’s soothing baritone. It shouldn’t work! Maybe it does, once or twice? It’s impossible to tell, even after watching six episodes because it’s so all over the place: A bunch of ideas thrown at the wall by producer Craig Sweeney (who mined Holmes territory in Jonny Lee Miller’s “Elementary”) and picked up by CBS because why not? Ratings are down, the most random shows hit it big, so why not try Dr. Watson in Pittsburgh? They’ve already done “NCIS” in Australia.
How does Sherlock’s famed partner go from London to the Steel City, you ask? Well, Watson and his bestie were living it up in London, solving cases and fighting evil villain Moriarty until they wound up on the cliff of Reichenbach Falls (fans of Holmes will recognize the familiar location). Three men went over the waterfall, but only Watson was rescued. Now, with a debilitating bump on the head that probably should have barred him from practicing medicine, Watson returns to his hometown of Pittsburgh. And hey, Sherlock left him a bunch of money and a plan to open a medical clinic specializing in diagnostic mysteries! So helpful.
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
Watson is assisted in his endeavor by fellow Sherlock associate Shinwell Johnson (Ritchie Coster), a walking cockney stereotype, and a group of hand-picked medical geniuses. Oh, and he gets a case or two referred by his ex-wife, Dr. Mary Morstan (Rochelle Aytes), who’s chief of the local prestigious hospital.
Yeah, that sounds a lot like Fox’s 2004-12 drama “House,” from the injured genius detective doctor to the ex as head of the hospital. (It also sounds like Fox’s new drama “Doc,” which also features a doctor with a traumatic brain injury and an ex at the top of the hospital org chart). “House” was a much better show than “Watson” is; the new show’s medical whodunits are kind of dull and the team of helpers is distinctly unappealing. But the day (and the quality of the episode) is often saved by the sheer charm of Chestnut, who looks and acts nothing like Martin Freeman or Jude Law or any Watsons you’ve seen before. He’s just kind of playing his swaggering, handsome self and sometimes referencing his pal Sherlock.
When the show pivots into dissecting bits and pieces of Sherlockian mythology it becomes so ridiculous as to be laughable. Without spoiling the premiere’s big twist, I can only say that this style of adaptation of the classic Arthur Conan Doyle characters has been done with far more creative success with the likes of “Sherlock” and “Elementary.” It turns out that Sherlock is a pretty pivotal part of any Sherlock Holmes story!
No one will turn on “Watson” without knowing exactly what they’re getting into. I expected formulaic episodes, attractive doctors in scrubs and lab coats and plenty of ridiculous medical terms. I did not expect to be so bored. I did not expect to be so befuddled, either. “Watson” wins the award for the most tedious series of the year that I also can’t stop thinking about due to its sheer oddity.
But perhaps it’s just a concept that was never going to work as a TV show. It doesn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure that out.

The ‘absurd’ way Alex Michelsen’s journey has turned out
American reflects on start of his second full season on Tour
January 17, 2025
Peter Staples/ATP Tour
Alex Michelsen has reached the third round of the Australian Open in two consecutive years.
By Andrew EichenholzIt is easy to forget that Alex Michelsen is only 20 years old.
The energetic American has already played in two editions of the Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF, made three ATP Tour finals, is into the Top 50 of the PIF ATP Rankings and is about to compete in the third round of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year.
But in an alternative universe, Michelsen could be sitting in class at the University of Georgia for his sophomore year of college. This time two years ago he had just cracked the Top 600 in the PIF ATP Rankings and was an 18-year-old fully prepared to go to school.
“This is a much better life than doing that,” Michelsen told ATPTour.com with a smile on his face, calling the thought of how his life has panned out “absurd”.
“College tennis did sound fun and it is fun. It looks awesome. But I’ve just never been a big school guy, so I’m super happy… I’m not the most social guy, either. I just like to play tennis and chill out, do my thing. I think the way I’m living my life is something I never considered growing up. And I’m still crazy happy with everything and how it’s all going.”
Michelsen’s older brother, Jake, graduated from Biola University in May and got a job at home in Irvine, 20 minutes from where the family lives. Jake is working for one of their father’s friends in a finance job, “doing great”. Could that have been Alex’s path?
“Maybe, yes, who knows? It’s not the world we’re living in. But, yes, I probably would have gone in a similar direction,” Michelsen said. “My dad is a lawyer, and he’s got a lot of friends… Probably could have hooked me up with a job after college. It’s not crazy to think that could have been my path.”
Watch Michelsen’s Journey To Jeddah:
Michelsen did not have a dream job outside of tennis. “If I could have been a professional video game player, that would have been sick. I played a lot of video games during Covid. That would have been so sick,” he said, cracking a laugh. “But that would have never happened because I’m just not that good.”
The Californian played a lot of Fortnite, including with close friend Learner Tien, who is also into the third round of the Australian Open. “I got pretty good at one point. I was pretty good,” Michelsen said. “Learner Tien is incredible at Fortnite. He won’t say it, but he’s incredible.”
Now they are both competing on the world’s biggest stage. Michelsen advanced past James McCabe on Thursday afternoon and planned to watch Tien face former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev from the comfort of his hotel room.
“He doesn’t need me. He’ll do just fine,” said Michelsen. That proved prophetic, as Tien stunned Medvedev in a fifth-set tie-break at 2:55 a.m. Friday morning.
While both Californians are on the rise, Michelsen has a bit more experience, with 2024 being his first full year of competition on the ATP Tour.
“Physically, I’ve improved a lot of things, like my serve, my forehand, especially. But I feel like mentally, I’ve made the biggest change in the last year than physically,” Michelsen said. “I feel like my game has not really changed in terms of the way I play, but mentally, just the way I approach matches, and the way I am in matches.”
Some of those improvements have been on the mental side of the sport. There have been the simple things, like not throwing his racquet as much or “chirping” at his box as often as he once did.
“I like the feeling of being composed on the court. And it’s not something I had growing up. So, I’m super glad I figured it out at some point,” said Michelsen, who began working with former World No. 15 Robby Ginepri alongside Jay Leavitt around last year’s US Open. “He’s definitely helped because he’s been in the situations. He’s been in very stressed situations on the court…. He’s given me some great advice. That has helped a tonne. But I’ve also known for a while that I needed to clean it up, and he just stepped in and helped out a lot.”
Life has changed off the court, too. Michelsen is in Melbourne with his girlfriend, Caroline, who was also in Auckland.
“We’ve been spending a lot of quality time together because I didn’t see her for about six weeks before this. So, I’ve been spending a lot of time with her. We’ll just chill out, watch the matches,” Michelsen said. “It’s a lot more fun to have company in the room. I like being alone, but it’s so much better to have her company with me.
“Support is big. At first, I played a lot of Challengers. I went to a lot of places by myself. I had my first ATP final at 18. I was by myself. But having the support is crucial. I realise when you’re just going week to week, different city, you need people. You need good people there to support you.”
Michelsen “loves the courts” in Melbourne and “the city is sick” (when the bugs are not bothering him). The 20-year-old will help the improvements he has made and the good vibes will lead to an even deeper run in the season’s first major. Next up is a third-round showdown with 19th seed Karen Khachanov.
“I had to get good at trying to find the balance of being happy after a win versus, ‘You’ve got to go and play in a couple days again’,” Michelsen said. “I can enjoy tonight. I don’t have anything tomorrow to focus on besides practice. Then I’ll probably start getting locked in on Saturday morning when I’ve got to play again.”
Alex Michelsen’s journey on the ATP Tour has been nothing short of absurd. From starting out as a promising young talent to facing setbacks and challenges along the way, Michelsen’s career has taken unexpected twists and turns.Despite his talent and potential, Michelsen struggled to make a mark on the tour in the early stages of his career. He faced injuries, losses, and doubts about his future in the sport. However, he never gave up and continued to work hard to improve his game.
Just when it seemed like Michelsen’s career was on the brink of collapse, he suddenly found his groove and started to string together impressive victories. His confidence grew, and he began to make a name for himself on the tour.
But just when things were looking up for Michelsen, another setback occurred. A controversial decision by the tournament officials led to Michelsen being disqualified from a crucial match, leaving his future uncertain once again.
Despite the ups and downs, Michelsen’s journey has been defined by his resilience and determination. He has faced adversity head-on and never shied away from a challenge. While his path may have been unconventional and absurd at times, Michelsen’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of professional tennis and the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity.
As Michelsen continues to navigate the ups and downs of the ATP Tour, one thing is certain – his journey is far from over, and there are bound to be many more twists and turns along the way. Stay tuned to see where this absurd journey will take him next.

Stephen A Smith reveals ‘absurd’ amount he spent on Eras Tour tickets to Travis Kelce
Stephen A Smith revealed to Travis Kelce that he spent $20,000 on tickets to see the Chiefs tight end’s girlfriend, Taylor Swift, in concert during the Eras Tour.
The ‘absurd’ amount came through resale, as Kelce pointed out, with Smith buying a ticket for himself, his two daughters, and 10 of their friends.
The baker’s dozen of Swift tickets averages out to more than $1,500 per stub for the worldwide tour that concluded last month. Smith gave his verdict on Swift’s extravaganza as well.
‘I went to her concert,’ Smith said. ‘Yo, Travis, it’s the greatest concert I’ve ever been to in my life.’
‘My daughters hoodwinked me because they got me to take 10 of their friends. Now that was two thousand a pop, I spent $20,000 on that [expletive] concert.’
‘I said, “this better be worth it” and I’ve got to confess, it was so [expletive] good I went twice.’
Stephen A Smith revealed to Travis Kelce that he spent $20,000 on Taylor Swift concert tickets
The ‘absurd’ amount came through resale, as Kelce pointed out, with Smith buying 13 tickets
Smith did not confirm how much he spent on tickets to his second Eras Tour concert, or what city either show was in.
Kelce knows plenty about the Eras Tour, as he watched his girlfriend take the stage over the last 15 months in Argentina, Australia, Amsterdam, and Singapore.
Kelce also appeared on stage during one of Swift’s six sold-out concerts at Wembley Stadium in London as a backup dancer to a raucous cheer from the English crowd.
Smith also maintained he did not listen to Swift’s music before going to the Eras Tour concert.
When the broadcaster went back to a Swift stadium show for a second time, Smith admitted to singing along.
Kelce confirmed earlier this week that Swift will be in attendance for his next game, a Divisional playoff against the Houston Texans, on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium.
Stephen A. Smith Reveals Jaw-Dropping Amount Spent on Eras Tour Tickets to Travis KelceIn a recent interview with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith dropped a bombshell revelation about the exorbitant amount he spent on tickets to the highly-anticipated Eras Tour featuring Travis Scott.
“I don’t usually like to talk about my spending habits, but I just couldn’t resist splurging on tickets to the Eras Tour,” Smith confessed. “I shelled out an absurd amount of money for VIP seats, meet-and-greet passes, and exclusive merch – all just to see Travis Scott perform live.”
While Smith declined to disclose the exact figure, sources close to the sports commentator claim he spent upwards of $10,000 on the tickets, making it one of the most expensive concert experiences of his life.
Kelce, who is known for his love of music and attending live events, was in awe of Smith’s dedication to securing the best seats for the Eras Tour. “That’s truly next level, Stephen. I respect the hustle and passion you have for music,” Kelce remarked.
Fans are now buzzing with excitement to see if Smith will share any behind-the-scenes moments from the Eras Tour on his social media platforms. One thing is for sure – his dedication to experiencing live music is unmatched.

The latest contestant to take home The Showcase prize on The Price is Right took a “bit of a gamble.”
This past week on the CBS game show has been nothing short of memorable. Contestants have been winning big on rarely-won games after bold decisions and obscene gestures.
The luck continued during the last episode when contestant Anna made an absurd bid during The Showcase.
Anna and her opponent Amy Lee went into the final game eager to win the big prize.
After Anna decided to pass, Amy Lee bid on a laptop, craft collection, camping gear and a brand new car. She originally guessed $55,500 but the audience encouraged her to go lower. Amy Lee ended up making a final decision of $40,000.
Anna’s prize included three all-expense-paid trips to stay in five-star resorts in Cancun, Mexico, Berlin, Germany and Bali, Indonesia.
Before making her bid, she admitted: “Those are excellent trips.”
She looked at her family for guidance, which is when she questioned their judgment.
Anna asked: “One Dollar?”
She decided to trust their judgment when she officially bid one dollar. Afterwards, she took a step back from the podium and crouched down, in disbelief at her decision.
“Alright, haven’t seen that in a while,” Drew Carey said.

Walking over to her opponent: he said: “All comes down to you Amy Lee.“
Carey unveiled the actual price of her prize to be $29,557. Despite her being much closer in price, the winning bid went to Anna, who then ran across stage to celebrate with her family.
The host admitted: “A bit of a gamble but not really.”
Adding onto what she won during the segment, Anna ended up going home with a prize fund of $59,857.
