  • 18 Atlanta Public Schools honored by state for academic excellence


    The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) recently honored 18 Atlanta Public Schools with distinctions for their respective academic achievements in 2024.

    The first distinction, titled “Title I Reward Schools,” was given to Title I schools that made “the most significant improvement, exceptional achievement and progress,” according to a release.

Boyd Elementary School, Emma Hutchinson Elementary School, L.O. Kimberly Elementary School, Hope-Hill Elementary School, West Manor Elementary School, William J. Scott Elementary School, F. L. Stanton Elementary School and Benteen Elementary School (which has received the recognition for two straight years).

    In addition to honoring Title I schools, the education department also recognized Atlanta schools that “improved their CCRPI Content Mastery score by at least 5% from 2023 to 2024,” with honorees including Continental Colony Elementary, Harper-Archer Elementary, Paul L. Dunbar Elementary, Michael R. Hollis Innovation Academy, KIPP Soul Academy, KIPP Vision Primary Charter and KIPP Ways Academy Charter.

    Finally, GaDOE commemorated Carver Early College for successfully improving outcomes for its underperforming student groups, allowing it to exit the “Targeted Support” classification.

    The named educational institutions are all part of the Atlanta Public Schools system, which stands as one of the largest school districts in the state of Georgia (serving around 50,000 students citywide).

  • Academic tournament begins for FCPS high schoolers

    Academic tournament begins for FCPS high schoolers


    The annual academic tournament for Frederick County Public Schools high school students begins on Friday.

    Teams composed of students from 10 high schools in FCPS compete against each other for eight weeks and answer questions. There is a weekly theme for each competition.

    On Friday, teams from Middletown, Brunswick, Gov. Thomas Johnson, Catoctin, Linganore, Walkersville, Frederick, Urbana, Tuscarora and Oakdale High schools will face off for the first time this season. The first category will be “fun with flags.”

    The other topics during the season will be culinary, board and tabletop games, women in science, musical instruments, the Cold War, Pixar and meteorology.

    Teams are scheduled to compete every Friday until the championship on Feb. 21. There also will be a Monday night competition scheduled for Jan. 13.

    The category for the championship is “banned books.”

    All regular season matches are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. Tthe championship is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. on Feb. 21.
