  • ACC Power Rankings: Is Duke the hottest team in the league or is there another?

Syracuse, N.Y. ― The Duke Blue Devils are the best team in the ACC. That’s obvious. So far the Blue Devils’ superiority in the conference has been unchallenged.

But there’s another team that’s making some noise and rising up in Syracuse.com’s weekly ACC Power Rankings.

The Louisville Cardinals, Syracuse’s next opponent, ran their current win streak to six games with a pair of impressive wins this past week. As a result, Louisville made the most significant move up in this week’s Power Rankings.

North Carolina and Stanford are two more teams to watch as they also went 2-0 this past week.

Here’s a look at this week’s Power Rankings:

    1. Duke

    Record: 14-2 (6-0)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 1

Last week’s results: Win 76-47 over Pittsburgh; Win 86-78 over Notre Dame

This week’s schedule: Tuesday vs. Miami; Saturday at Boston College

Why No. 1? Duke has Cooper Flagg. That’s it. The freshman went for 42 points on 11-for-14 shooting along with seven assists and six rebounds in Duke’s win over Notre Dame.

    2. Louisville

    Record: 12-5 (5-1)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 4

Last week’s result: Win 74-64 over Clemson; Win 82-78 at Pittsburgh

This week’s schedule: Tuesday at Syracuse; Saturday vs. Virginia

Why No. 2? Louisville has won six games in a row. The Cardinals’ last loss was at Kentucky on Dec. 14. But the Cardinals took things up a notch this past week with wins over Clemson at home and Pittsburgh on the road. Those teams were second and third in last week’s Power Rankings.

    3. Clemson

    Record: 13-4 (5-1)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 2

Last week’s results: Loss 74-64 at Louisville; Win 77-57 over Florida State

This week’s schedule: Tuesday at Georgia Tech; Saturday at Pittsburgh

Why No. 3? The Tigers suffered a tough road loss at Louisville, so they slide down one spot. Nice bounce-back win as Clemson demolished Florida State on Saturday. A key game looms next Saturday at Pitt.

    4. Pittsburgh

    Record: 12-4 (3-2)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 3

Last week’s result: Loss 76-47 at Duke; Loss 82-78 to Louisville

This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Florida State; Saturday vs. Clemson

Why No. 4? Pittsburgh had a tough week. The road loss at Duke was expected, but not the margin. Then came the home loss to Louisville. That’s a separation game. Still, can’t find any reason to drop Pitt more than a notch. I think the Panthers are a top-4 club in the ACC.

    5. Wake Forest

    Syracuse basketball vs. Wake Forest

    Record: 12-4 (4-1)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 5

Last week’s results: Win 88-78 at Miami

This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. Stanford; Saturday at Virginia Tech

Why No. 5? Wake Forest treads water with a win at Miami in its only game of the week. The Deacons are just outside the obvious top 4 in the ACC. Can they stay ahead of SMU and UNC in the coming weeks?

    6. North Carolina

    Record: 11-6 (4-1)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 7

Last week’s results: Win 82-67 over SMU; Win 63-61 at N.C. State

This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. California; Saturday vs. Stanford

Why No. 6? Lifted North Carolina over SMU with its mid-week win over the Mustangs, then watched the Tar Heels survive their battle against arch-rival N.C. State. Still don’t know just how good the Tar Heels are or aren’t.

    7. SMU

    Record: 12-4 (3-2)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 6

Last week’s result: Loss 82-67 at North Carolina; Win 93-71 over Georgia Tech

This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Virginia; Saturday at Miami

Why No. 7? SMU’s two ACC losses have come at Duke and North Carolina. No shame in either. For now, the Mustangs sit at No. 7, but I’m thinking this team could move into the Top 5 within a week or two. Let’s see how SMU does in two road games this week.

    8. Stanford

    Record: 11-5 (3-2)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 9

Last week’s results: Win 70-59 over Virginia Tech; Win 88-65 over Virginia

This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Wake Forest; Stanford at North Carolina

Why No. 8? Stanford jumps over Virginia this week. A home win doesn’t always necessitate a move, but Stanford beat UVa by 23 points. I don’t think any of the ACC’s East Coast teams are going to enjoy playing the Cardinal in Palo Alto.

    9. Virginia

    Record: 8-8 (1-4)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 8

Last week’s results: Loss 75-61 at California; Loss 88-65 at Stanford

This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. SMU; Saturday at Louisville

Why No. 8? The fact that Virginia has lost its last three games by an average of 19.0 points would warrant a steeper drop. But I’m giving consideration to the Cavaliers’ losing twice on the West Coast and also its recent win over N.C. State, which was the one team I considered moving ahead of the Wahoos.

    10. N.C. State

    Record: 9-7 (2-3)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 11

Last week’s result: Win 66-65 over Notre Dame; Loss 63-61 to North Carolina

This week’s schedule: Wednesday at Virginia Tech; Saturday vs. California

Why No. 10? N.C. State was so close to moving up even higher, but lost to North Carolina as the Tar Heels got a late dunk and then a game-saving block in the final seconds.

    11. Florida State

    Record: 11-5 (2-3)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 12

Last week’s result: Win 80-65 at Miami; Loss 77-57 at Clemson

This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. Pittsburgh; Saturday vs. Georgia Tech

Why No. 11? Florida State starts to merit some attention with wins over Syracuse and Miami but then gets smacked at Clemson. Seminoles are settling into the range between the ACC’s best teams at the top and lesser teams at the bottom.

    12. Syracuse

Syracuse Orange Basketball 2024-25: Syracuse vs Georgia Tech

Syracuse guard JJ Starling celebrates after a big play in the Orange’s win over Georgia Tech last Tuesday. Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.comdennis nett | dnett@syracuse.com

    Record: 8-8 (2-3)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 14

Last week’s result: Win 62-55 over Georgia Tech; Win 79-71 at Boston College

This week’s schedule: Tuesday vs. Louisville; Saturday vs. Notre Dame

Why No. 12? Not that Syracuse had a real eye-opening win last week, but the Orange did beat one team (Georgia Tech) ranked above them and then got a road win at BC. And road wins matter.

    13. Georgia Tech

    Record: 8-9 (2-4)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 10

Last week’s results: Loss 62-55 at Syracuse; Loss 93-71 at SMU

This week’s schedule: Tuesday vs. Clemson

Why No. 13? Georgia Tech falls three spots after a pair of road losses. The Yellow Jackets failed to beat a Syracuse team that was without starting forward Donnie Freeman.

    14. Notre Dame

    Record: 7-9 (1-4)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 13

Last week’s result: Loss 66-65 at N.C. State; Loss 86-78 at Duke

This week’s schedule: Monday vs. Boston College; Saturday at Syracuse

Why No. 14? Not going to knock Notre Dame down too far. What did we expect with road games at N.C. State and Duke? The Irish actually showed a lot of fight in both games, barely losing at State and hanging tough against the Blue Devils.

    15. Virginia Tech

    Record: 7-9 (2-3)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 17

Last week’s result: Loss 70-59 at Stanford; Win 71-68 at California

This week’s schedule: Wednesday vs. N.C. State; Saturday vs. Wake Forest

Why No. 15? Virginia Tech earned a two-spot increase thanks to a road win at Cal.

    16. California

    Record: 7-7 (0-3)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 15

Last week’s result: Win 75-61 over Virginia; Loss 71-68 to Virginia Tech

This week’s schedule: Wednesday at North Carolina; Saturday at NC State

Why No. 16? It’s hard to drop Cal after its win over Virginia, but the Bears couldn’t follow it up on Saturday and lost to Virginia Tech. Hoping another week of games will provide some more separation between these teams.

    17. Boston College

    Record: 9-7 (1-4)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 16

Last week’s result: Loss 79-71 to Syracuse

This week’s schedule: Monday at Notre Dame; Saturday vs. Duke

Why No. 17? The Eagles’ only ACC win to date is over Miami. That’s the only team behind BC at this point. The Eagles’ four ACC losses include a 21-point loss at Georgia Tech and the home loss to struggling Syracuse.

    18. Miami

    Record: 4-12 (0-5)

    Last week’s ranking: No. 18

Last week’s result: Loss 80-65 to Florida State; Loss 88-78 to Wake Forest

This week’s schedule: Tuesday at Duke; Saturday vs. SMU

Why No. 18? Miami couldn’t pick up a win despite having two home games last week. The odds of getting one this week appear slim with a game at Duke and then a visit to Coral Gables from SMU.

  • NC State clobbered at Wake Forest for second straight ACC loss

NC State clobbered at Wake Forest for second straight ACC loss

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — NC State fell behind by as much as 22 points in a 77-69 loss at Wake Forest to fall to 8-6 (1-2 ACC) on the season in Winston-Salem. Marcus Hill led the way with 14 points on 12 shots, but the Wolfpack shot 33 percent from the floor in the second half and lost the turnover battle, rebounding battle and had just two assists in the second half in a lopsided loss.

Here are the immediate takeaways from NC State’s first ACC game of the 2025 portion of the season in Winston-Salem against Wake Forest.

Slow Start in Each Half Dooms Pack

The Wolfpack did a lot of clawing back to make it a game at the end of each half, but trailed by double digits at the under-12 in each due to poor shooting and turnovers. In the first half, the Wolfpack only got off three shots in the first 5:55 of play due to four early turnovers that prevented it from getting into offensive sets. The Pack was able to take advantage of Hunter Sallis and Efton Reid both going to the bench with two fouls late, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit to go into the half down 38-32.

By the midway point of the second half, State already had 10 turnovers, which is more than it averages per game on the season at 9.8. The Pack was also shooting 5-of-17 as a team in the second half by that point, which led to a 14-point deficit with 9:02 remaining in the game. It didn’t help that Wake got an unbelievable effort from Sallis — who had 13 of his 20 points in the second half — and Juke Harris scoring 14 points in the first half, but the Pack’s shooting woes and early turnovers in each half were the tipping point.

    Middlebrooks Does Little In Return

Not only did Ben Middlebrooks return to the court after missing Tuesday’s game against Virginia, he got the start along with Brandon Huntley-Hatfield. That was short lived, however, as Wake got out to an early lead and NC State went back to a smaller lineup and Middlebrooks was mostly ineffective outside of one first-half block.

He did very little in the second half, either, finishing with a grand total of four points on two missed shots on the floor and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Middlebrooks returned to the court late, missed a 3-pointer and was called for his fourth foul just before the under-4 media timeout. On a day where he finished with just one total rebound in more than 20 minutes played, it was not the return the Pack needed.

    Half-Court Offensive Issues Continue

It’s been an issue all season long, but it was a glaring one for the Wolfpack on Saturday in Winston-Salem. The Wolfpack got 14 points off turnovers compared to 11 for Wake Forest and the fact that State once again got just two total assists in the second half for a second straight game proves how little the Pack is moving the ball in ACC play thus far.

State has talked about playing together, focusing on the little things and not allowing the ball to get stuck. But after fighting back late in the first half, all of those aspects were let downs for State as it watched a two-point deficit one minute into the second half dissipate into as much as a 22-point lead for the Deacs with 4:58 left to play. Shooting 33 percent — including 1-of-6 from behind the arc — with two assists to seven turnovers in the second half will do that to a team.

In a disappointing turn of events, the NC State Wolfpack suffered a clobbering defeat at the hands of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, marking their second consecutive ACC loss.

The Wolfpack came into the game with high hopes of bouncing back from their previous loss, but they were unable to find their rhythm against a dominant Wake Forest team. The Demon Deacons’ offense was firing on all cylinders, while NC State struggled to keep up.

Despite their best efforts, the Wolfpack were unable to contain Wake Forest’s explosive offense and fell behind early in the game. Their defense also struggled to make stops, allowing the Demon Deacons to score at will.

This loss serves as a wake-up call for NC State, as they now find themselves on a two-game losing streak in conference play. They will need to regroup quickly and address their weaknesses if they hope to turn their season around.

It’s back to the drawing board for the Wolfpack as they look to bounce back from this tough defeat and get back on track in the ACC. Only time will tell if they can rise to the challenge and overcome this setback.

Why Duke basketball coach Jon Scheyer isn’t on sideline for ACC matchup with SMU

Just a few minutes before SMU basketball’s first ACC meeting with No. 4 Duke, the Blue Devils announced a key absence for Saturday’s showdown.

Duke coach Jon Scheyer didn’t travel with the team to Dallas due to illness. Associate head coach Chris Carrawell took Scheyer’s spot on the bench as acting head coach at Moody Coliseum.

BOZICH | ACC opportunity abounds as Louisville awaits North Carolina visit | Louisville Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The Southeastern Conference has five basketball teams ranked in the top 10. The Atlantic Coast Conference has five teams projected to make the 2025 NCAA Tournament field.

I’m not here to take another shot at the league that Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski made famous. I’m here to remind you that opportunity awaits Pat Kelsey’s University of Louisville men’s basketball team when the Cardinals play the first of 18 consecutive ACC games at 6 p.m. Wednesday against North Carolina at the KFC Yum! Center.

The ACC is not a ferocious league this season.

That does not mean the games will not be close, competitive and difficult to navigate. They will be. They are in every conference.

But it does mean the only ACC team that has separated itself from the pack is Duke. The Blue Devils are the only ACC team ranked in the Associated Press Top 25. The Blue Devils and Pitt are the only ACC teams ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA’s NET computer formula.

The Blue Devils are projected to win the ACC with an 18-2 record by Ken Pomeroy’s computer formula, which has Duke four games ahead of Pitt, SMU and Clemson.

Joe Lunardi posted his latest NCAA Tournament forecast at ESPN.com on Tuesday morning. His five tournament teams are Duke (a No. 1 seed), Pitt (6-seed), Clemson (8-seed), North Carolina (10-seed) and SMU (11-seed).

Lunardi ranks Louisville’s the next-best ACC squad, eight spots away from making the NCAA field.

Translation: Carolina is a 10-seed. Louisville is within sniffing distance of an 11-seed. A victory over the Tar Heels on Wednesday would be meaningful for the Cardinals.

    Quite meaningful.

The Cards have lost five straight to UNC by an average of 19 points. Their last win over the Tar Heels was Feb. 22, 2020, season two of Chris Mack.

Like U of L, North Carolina has lost five games this season. Like U of L, North Carolina has lost all of those games to teams ranked in the top 40 in Pomeroy’s computer formula.

In fact, all of UNC’s losses have been to teams in Pomeroy’s top 20: Kansas (No. 9); Auburn (No. 1); Michigan State (No. 20); Alabama (No. 8) and Florida (No. 6).

“Very, very, very good,” Kelsey said of the Tar Heels.

“Like us, they played one of the toughest schedules in the country, at least when I go back and look at strength of schedule and stuff like that.

“But you know, each one of their losses was very close, and against very, very, very good teams. Listen, they’re one of the most talented teams in the country.

“They’re led by one of the most decorated college players in the last several decades. Hubert Davis is a phenomenal coach. Obviously, the history of North Carolina basketball speaks for itself … we’ve got to be on our best to beat them.”

The metrics suggest a Louisville victory would not be a Shock the World moment. At KenPom, the forecast is UNC, 82-81. At Bart Torvik, it is UNC, 84-81. At Erik Haslam’s website it is UNC, 82-78. A one- or two-possession game.

    Most viewed sports stories

The Cards do not have to make a return trip to Chapel Hill. This is a grand opportunity to score points for Selection Sunday.

The ACC road hardly looks overwhelming. Ten of the 18 ACC programs have five or more losses. Three have already scheduled themselves to losing records.

Kelsey does not agree. He worked as an assistant at Wake Forest and also coached in the footprint of the league at Winthrop and Charleston.

“It’s one of the best (leagues) in the history of college basketball, if not the best,” Kelsey said

“I have the utmost respect for the coaches and the teams in this league. Rankings and things like that are for you guys. I don’t pay much attention to them. I just focus on the next task at hand, the next team we’re prepared for. And obviously we play an extremely dangerous, talented North Carolina team.”

A deeper look shows this: ACC teams have already lost four games to teams with computer power ratings of 200 or worse — and five more to teams ranked 100 or worse.

ACC teams have lost to Dartmouth (Boston College); Cornell (California); Charleston Southern (Miami); Cal Poly (Stanford), Jacksonville (Virginia Tech) and Elon (Notre Dame).

    Ugh.

Tony Bennett walked out on Virginia days before the season. Jim Larranaga quit Miami last week. Boston College, Florida State and Virginia Tech will likely be looking for new coaches.

Opportunity abounds for Louisville, starting with the visit from North Carolina Wednesday night.

Picked to finish ninth prior the season, the Cards should be able to exceed that.

“I don’t know what we were picked to start,” Kelsey said.

“You said we were ninth … not sure I even really knew that. I knew we weren’t picked first. That’s for sure. I don’t pay attention to standings. I pay attention to where our team is today.”

Where the Cards are today is in position to take a major step.

    Quotables

“The only thing that I focus on is that for this team to reach its full potential, we would have to be a really good defensive and rebounding team. I’ve been straightforward and direct with them from the start. I’ve also added one extra thing, and that’s taking care of the basketball. We only had seven turnovers (against Campbell). If we take care of the basketball, we get shots, and we’re a team that can make shots.” — coach Hubert Davis on Sunday night, after UNC’s 97-81 defeat of Campbell.

“We never worry about offense. We have so many talented scorers, so that’s never a worry. And just ending games, like the last four minutes of tight games. All of our losses were really close, and we flipped that around in the UCLA game, and we have confidence that we can flip that around now. We did so much film on those last couple minutes of every loss, so it’s like we know exactly what we want to do, and we know exactly how we want to play in those last minutes. And that’s what it’s going to come down to in the ACC, especially on road, against any team.” — UNC guard Elliot Cadeau, after the victory against Campbell.

    Pregame Notes

RJ Davis Shoots Way into History: Fifth-year senior guard RJ Davis hit five 3-pointers in the win over Campbell, shooting into the top spot on UNC’s all-time 3-point list. He moved up to 303 made 3-pointers across his college career, surpassing Marcus Paige’s previous program record of 299 made 3-pointers. Davis finished with 23 points against the Camels on 53.3-percent shooting from the field (7-of-13) and 50-percent shooting from 3-point range (5-of-10). That’s the first time this season Davis has shot 50 percent or better from the field, and 40 percent or better on 3-pointers in the same game. Now, Davis needs 15 points to surpass former big man Armando Bacot for second place in all-time scoring at UNC.

Freshman guard Ian Jackson also continued his scoring surge. Jackson earned his first college starting assignment on Sunday night, with Seth Trimble sitting out due to an upper-body injury suffered in practice. Jackson produced a season-high 26 points against the Camels, and earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors for that performance. He’s shooting a team-best 41.7 percent from 3-point range (minimum five attempts).

Defensive Lapse Results in Metrics Slide: Carolina led Campbell 82-53 with less than six minutes remaining in the game on Sunday night. That 29-point lead for UNC was right on pace for the predicted final margin, as the Tar Heels were installed as 28½-point favorites by the oddsmakers. But defensive miscues down the stretch allowed the Camels to cut their final deficit down to 16 points. Campbell forward Colby Duggan pumped in a career-high 32 points, doubling his previous career best of 16 points. He reached that mark last season against Division III program Southern Virginia.

Though the sleepy finish didn’t cost UNC the game against Campbell, which checked in a lowly No. 310 in the NET rankings coming into the game, it did hurt Carolina’s rating in the metrics. The Tar Heels dropped six spots in the NET after the victory against the Camels, slipping from No. 32 to No. 38. UNC began this week as one of three teams ranked among the top 50 in the NET that had played seven Quad 1 games, along with Auburn (No. 1 in the NET) and Purdue (No. 37).

The NET (or NCAA Evaluation Tool) is one of the main metrics used when assigning the NCAA Tournament field. It accounts for margin of victory, strength of opponent and site of games played, among other factors. At this juncture, the Tar Heels have seven remaining all-important Quad 1 chances on their ACC league schedule — the pair of home-and-away games against Duke (No. 3 in the NET) and Pittsburgh (No. 11), next week’s home game against SMU (No. 30), and road games at Louisville (No. 60) and Clemson (No. 36). The Jan. 7 game against SMU, however, narrowly meets the top-30 threshold in order for a home contest to qualify as a Quad 1 game.

Looking at Louisville: The Cardinals have seen marked improvement this season, and are off to an 8-5 start under first-year coach Pat Kelsey. He came to Louisville after head-coaching stops at Winthrop (2012-21) and College of Charleston (2021-24). Kelsey’s teams have earned four NCAA Tournament berths (two apiece at each school). He’s the fifth all-time winningest coach in the Big South. At Louisville, Kelsey replaced Kenny Payne, who logged a dismal 12-52 record across his two seasons in charge of the Cardinals.

Louisville won five of its first six games this season, defeating Morehead State (by a 93-45 margin), Bellarmine (100-68), Winthrop (76-61), Indiana (89-61) and West Virginia (79-70). The only loss during the stretch came at home to now top-ranked and unbeaten Tennessee (77-55). All five of the Cardinals’ losses have come against teams currently ranked in the AP Top 25 — No. 12 Oklahoma (69-64), No. 24 Ole Miss (86-63), No. 4 Duke (76-65) and No. 10 Kentucky (93-85). The Cardinals have played the 21st-hardest schedule in the country, according to Ken Pomroy’s college basketball database. KenPom ranks UNC’s strength of schedule the seventh-hardest in the country behind Florida A&M, Mississippi Valley State, Memphis, Jackson State, Central Michigan and Alcorn State.

The last time out, Louisville needed some late-game heroics to escape with a 78-76 victory against Eastern Kentucky. Noah Waterman’s go-ahead layup with 1.2 seconds left gave the Cardinals a 77-76 lead, and that bucket proved to be the difference. Louisville was a 21½-point favorite in that game by the oddsmakers, but was unable to create separation from the visiting Colonels.

Roster Goes Through Portal Reconstruction: Kelsey and Co. overhauled Louisville’s roster through the portal, welcoming 12 transfer additions. It’s the largest transfer class in the country and ranked No. 27 nationally, according to 247Sports. The new additions include Waterman (from BYU), Frank Anselem-Ible (from Georgia) Chucky Hepburn (from Wisconsin), Aly Khalifa (from BYU), Kasean Pryor (from South Florida), Aboubacar Traore (from Long Beach State), J’Vonne Hadley (from Colorado), Terrence Edwards Jr. (from James Madison), Koren Johnson (from Washington), and three transfers from College of Charleston in Reyne Smith, Kobe Rogers and James Scott. The 6-foot-11, 275-pound Khalifa, a native of Egypt, is redshirting this year to fully recover from a knee injury.

Hepburn leads the way for Louisville, delivering 15.2 points, 5.2 assists and 2.8 steals per game. He ranks sixth in the country in total steals (36). Hepburn spent three seasons at Wisconsin, before joining the Cardinals this season. He earned All-Big Ten honorable mention twice, and was on the Big Ten’s all-defensive team last season. The JMU transfer Edwards is second on the team in scoring, supplying 14.7 points per game. He’s in his fifth season of college basketball. Edwards was the Sun Belt Player of the Year last season, averaging 17.2 points per game, and helped lead JMU to a 32-4 record and an appearance in the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament.

Pryor (torn knee ligament) and Johnson (torn labrum) have suffered season-ending injuries already this season. Pryor was averaging 12 points and 6.1 rebounds per game for Louisville at the time of his injury. Johnson appeared in just two games this season, but logged 19.5 minutes of action per game in those contests. Their injuries essentially have reduced the Cardinals to a seven-man rotation.

No Shortage of 3-Point Attempts: Louisville certainly isn’t shy to let it fly from 3-point distance, firing up 32.5 attempts beyond the arc per game. That’s the fourth-most attempts in the country. But the high volume hasn’t exactly resulted in tremendous success. The Cardinals are shooting a mere 29.9 percent on 3-pointers, and all but three players on their roster are shooting below 30 percent. The lefty Smith is shooting a team-best 37.3 percent on 3-pointers, and has made 44 successful 3s this season. He made 292 total 3-pointers across his three years at College of Charleston.

The tendency to launch a high volume of outside shots is a common trait of Kelsey-coached teams. Last season, College of Charleston ranked third nationally in 3-point attempts, putting up 30.6 shots per game. Those shots, though, resulted in much better success, as the Cougars recorded 10.5 successful 3-pointers per game last season (eighth nationally). Across Louisville’s five losses this season, the Cardinals are shooting just 27.4 percent (47-for-171) beyond the 3-point arc.

Last Meeting: UNC beat Louisville 86-70 in the first half of league play last season. That victory was part of a stretch that saw the Tar Heels win their first nine ACC games.

RJ Davis provided a game-high 21 points, and added six assists and six rebounds. Bacot stuffed the stat sheet with 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots. Jae’Lyn Withers, the Louisville transfer then in his first season at Carolina, contributed 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

Series History: UNC leads the all-time series 20-7. The Tar Heels have won five straight games against the Cardinals, and seven of the last eight meetings dating to February 2019. On the road, Carolina holds a 4-3 edge on Louisville in games played at the KFC Yum! Center.

Wednesday night marks UNC’s fourth-ever game on Jan. 1. The Tar Heels lost at Butler on New Year’s Day in 1929 and at Maryland in 1943, before defeating Monmouth in Chapel Hill, N.C., on New Year’s Day in 2012, during coach Hubert Davis’ first season as an assistant with the Tar Heels.

Looking ahead, based on today’s NET, Wake would be Q2, Notre Dame Q3, and UNC Q2.

    Wolfpack Player Notes:

    • Mike James had knee surgery on 10/30, doctors [incorrectly] estimated 3-4 week recovery

    Opponent Overview:

The Cavs were voted to finish 5th in the ACC season, just days before head coach Tony Bennett announced his retirement. Virgina quickly named associate head coach Ron Sanchez as the interim head coach. Sanchez is a ‘Bennett guy’ having worked for Tony’s dad Dick Bennett at Wazzu and then stuck around to work for Tony there, and then followed Tony to Charlottesville. In 2018 he got the HC job at Charlotte and did five seasons there recording a 72-78 record and winning a CBI championship before resigning and returning to UVA last season.

Coach Sanchez has had to deal with a boatload of roster turnover from last season’s 23-11 team that lost a memorable ACCT game, and then a nearly as memorable 25 point loss to Colorado State in the NCAAT ‘first four’ game. Reese Beekman (2-way) and Ryan Dunn are in the NBA, Jordan Minor is in the G-League. Jake Groves got a job overseas. Leon Bond and Dante Harris decided to transfer.

The Hoos added starters PG Dai Dai Ames (4-star, Kansas State) and forward Elijah Saunders (3-star, San Diego State), and forward TJ Power (4-star, Duke) from the portal and signed two freshmen, hot shooting guard Ishan Sharma and 6’10” big man Anthony Robinson.

On top of all that, backup guard Elijah Gertrude will miss the season due to knee surgery and FSU 4-star transfer Jalen Warley decided to bail when Tony Bennett retired and will redshirt this season and transfer again in the spring.

    Opponent Snapshot:

    Wolfpack Keys To The Game

    1. Score! – The Cavs have only scored 70 or more twice this season.
    2. Prepare for a slow pace – UVA’s Adj Tempo ranks 364 (last), they average 20.6 seconds per offensive possession – we’ll have to stay focused on defense. We’ll have to shoot well to maximize our limited offensive opportunities.
    3. Effective half-court offense – Transition baskets will be rare, so we’ll face UVA’s pack line defense on most possessions. Our assist numbers are going to have to be very good, this will need to be won as a team.
    4. Guard the 3PT line – Virginia has three starters averaging better than 44% from 3PT, and another averaging 38.7%. In their best win of the season against Villanova, they shot 56%.

    * Welcome to the WAB

The WAB (wins against bubble) is a metric popularized by Bart Torvik that the NCAA Selection Committee has decided to include in its deliberations starting this season. It shows how many more, or fewer, wins a team has against its schedule versus what a bubble team would expect to have against the same schedule. The WAB metric uses NET as the basis for opponent strength, with the reference “bubble team” being defined as a team ranked 45th in NET, based on a study of recent seasons. If interested, further details linked below:

The NC State Wolfpack is gearing up to kick off their ACC season on the road against the Virginia Cavaliers. This highly anticipated matchup will be a test of both teams’ strengths and abilities as they look to make their mark in the conference.

NC State is coming off a strong non-conference schedule, with notable wins over top-ranked teams. Led by standout players such as Jericole Hellems and Dereon Seabron, the Wolfpack are poised to make a statement in the ACC this season.

On the other hand, the Virginia Cavaliers are known for their disciplined style of play and tough defense. They will be looking to defend their home court and start the ACC season off on the right foot.

This game is sure to be a thrilling and competitive matchup between two talented teams. NC State fans will be eagerly watching as their team looks to secure a win on the road and set the tone for the rest of the ACC season. • Louisville basketball dispatches pesky Eastern Kentucky, prepares for bulk of ACC schedule

Louisville basketball dispatches pesky Eastern Kentucky, prepares for bulk of ACC schedule

It felt as if Louisville basketball threw a first-half knockout punch Saturday afternoon against Eastern Kentucky at the KFC Yum! Center, using a 15-4 run to take a 42-27 lead into the final 3:41 before the intermission.

Wrong. Pat Kelsey’s Cardinals (8-5) let off the gas a little bit and found themselves in a dogfight. With 9:49 remaining in regulation, the Colonels pulled in front, 61-59; and, even when U of L responded with 12 unanswered points, they refused to go down quietly.
