It will also give users the opportunity to pay to upgrade to the ad-free Peacock Premium+ tier. Broadband-only customers will have both Premium and Premium+ available to purchase through Spectrum. There are three tiers of English language Spectrum subscriptions. TV Stream is $45/month and includes 85+ channels and the Spectrum TV App.

While financial terms for the NBCUniversal-Charter agreement went undisclosed, it was revealed that Charter would continue its full broadcast of NBCU’s portfolio of television programming. Matt Bond, chairman of content distribution at NBCU said about the deal,

“This extension of our strategic relationship with Charter ensures Spectrum video customers will continue to have access to the leading media portfolio, whether they choose to watch on traditional TV or stream it on Peacock. We also achieved our primary goal, which was to strike a deal that recognizes the value of our linear programming and the investments we’ve made in developing premium content, expanding the distribution of Peacock to more consumers. We are pleased to partner with Charter to reach these objectives to the benefit of our viewers.”

For NBC, this is a chance for Peacock to be put up right alongside the “prestige” streaming platforms that Spectrum already has a deal with. This makes it clear that the company believes its original content and its library stack up against Max, Paramount+, and Disney+.

Tom Montemagno, Charter’s executive VP of programming acquisition said,

“With the renewal of our long-standing partnership with NBCUniversal, we now have completed deals with every major programmer to create better flexibility and greater value to our customers by including DTC streaming apps with their Spectrum TV service, at no extra cost.”

Wyden demands answers on Musk personnel seeking access to U.S. Treasury system
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KATU) — Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., has called for an explanation from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent following reports that individuals linked to Elon Musk attempted to gain access to a highly sensitive Treasury Department payment system. The system, which is managed by non-political staff, handles trillions of dollars annually, including Social Security and Medicare benefits, tax credits, and payments to government contractors, some of which compete with Musk-owned companies.

Trump White House Receives 10,000 ‘New Media’ Applications After Widening Scope of Press Access
President Donald Trump’s White House has received more than 10,000 applications for its “new media” seat, according to press secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday.

The new media seat — which was announced earlier this week at Leavitt’s first press briefing — aims to give independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers and content creators a chance to ask questions alongside reporters from legacy media outlets like The New York Times and The Washington Post.

On Friday, the new media seat was being occupied by the co-hosts of the “Ruthless” podcast. John Ashbrook, one of the show’s co-hosts, was even called on by Leavitt to ask the first question of the day.

“You know, Karoline, in your first briefing, the media went after this administration reporting illegal immigrants they claim were not criminal,” Ashbrook said. “Question is, do you think they’re out of touch with Americans demanding action on our border crisis?”

Leavitt responded that the mainstream media is “certainly is out of touch” with regards to illegal immigration. She then pointed to a recent poll from the NYT — “which, of course, is a legacy media outlet” — that showed 87% of Americans support deporting violent illegal immigrants.

Earlier in the week, she said the new Trump administration would restore more than 400 press passes that were revoked during Joe Biden’s time in office. Leavitt said this, coupled with the new media seat and Trump’s recent conversations with reporters, shows he is the “most transparent” president in history.

Among those who have applied for new media seat approval this week include James O’Keefe, the Project Veritas founder who is now running O’Keefe Media Group; and Seth Dillon, the CEO of The Babylon Bee, the right-leaning satirical site.

At 27 years old, Leavitt took the designation of being the youngest White House press secretary from Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he served for Richard Nixon, beginning in 1969. The position was introduced during Herbert Hoover’s administration in 1929.

Looking ahead, Leavitt joked the White House may need to expand the press room to accommodate its new media members.

T-Mobile Hints at How It Will Charge Users for Cellular Starlink Access

After it moves out of beta, T-Mobile’s cellular Starlink service might be a free perk — but only for subscribers on the more expensive plans.

In a Wednesday earnings call, T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert briefly discussed the carrier’s plans to monetize direct-to-cell Starlink connectivity once it becomes commercially available in the US.

“We think this will be another reason—maybe the most compelling reason in a long time—to self select up our rate card,” he said. “This will be something that customers on our most valued pack plans will be able to benefit from. And so that’s an area that we’ll monetize.”

Translation: It gives people a reason to upgrade to a pricier plan. And T-Mobile is betting that enough people will want satellite connectivity to stay connected in cellular dead zones. The Starlink technology currently only supports SMS texts, but pending regulatory approval and more satellite launches, it’ll eventually power voice calling and internet downloads.

Sievert also sees the cellular Starlink service as a way for T-Mobile to stand out from other carriers, enabling it to retain and attract customers. “Market share, that’s an area where we’ll monetize because this is a differentiated service that we think touches on a chord with the American public,” he said. “The idea of being connected everywhere. [If] you can see the sky, you’re connected.”

T-Mobile will also offer cellular Starlink via “a la carte sales,” or what will likely be a paid add-on. Sievert didn’t give an exact price but said a la carte offering is meant to appeal to “those who don’t have the plans that include it.”

T-Mobile kicked off beta tests of the cellular Starlink system earlier this month, enabling a select group of customers to try out the technology. Sievert added that T-Mobile has been focusing the beta tests “more in the northern” parts of the US due to better satellite density.

“And what you’re going to see is a phasing. So first, we’re letting people in, in limited numbers, to the beta. Then pretty soon, there’s going to be a moment where we widen that aperture by quite a bit, and that will be an exciting moment,” he said. “And then pretty soon after that, we begin commercial service.”

Interested T-Mobile users can sign up for the free beta at the carrier’s website. The program was initially restricted to five Samsung models, but T-Mobile has since expanded the beta tests to iPhones running the newly released iOS 18.3.

Apple’s New ‘Game Changer’ iPhone Update Brings Starlink Satellite Access

Gurman describes the software update that supports the technology as an “under-the-radar move,” and the tie-up between the companies as “a surprise.”

While T-Mobile already had a Starlink satellite option for users to send emergency messages when outside cellular range, it was for Samsung phones only. And Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite service used the rival Globalstar network.

A post on X from Mario Nawfal, founder of IBC Group, described the update as a “game changer”, saying “Apple quietly adds Starlink to iPhones in iOS 18.3.” Since Apple already has its Globalstar service, why is this a game-changer?

Well, as Nawfal puts it, “The key difference? No more pointing your phone at the sky—Starlink works right from your pocket.” Nawfal’s comment was reposted by Elon Musk, who said that “Medium resolution images, music & audio podcasts should work with the current generation Starlink direct-to-phone constellation. Next generation constellation will do medium resolution video.”

A small number of iPhones on the T-Mobile network have been enabled to work as a beta test, receiving messages saying, “You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”

“Users in the program have a new toggle switch in their iPhone cellular data settings to manage the satellite feature,” Gurman says.

The first version is just for texting, but SpaceX and T-Mobile say they have plans to expand into data connections and voice calls in due course. The service will work automatically, with an iPhone on T-Mobile connecting to SpaceX satellite when out of cellular connectivity. Right now, the number of iPhones in the beta is “minimal, with T-Mobile planning to expand the program in February,” Gurman adds.

Right now, only iPhones in the U.S. have this connectivity, and it applies to handsets from the iPhone 14 onwards.
