Year two of the current bull market saw the ageless Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI -0.32%), benchmark S&P 500 (^GSPC -0.29%), and growth-driven Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC -0.50%) rise by 13%, 23%, and 29%, respectively, with all three indexes reaching numerous record closing highs.
Professional and everyday investors have rallied around a plethora of catalysts, including the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), the resiliency of the U.S. economy, a decline in the prevailing rate of inflation, and excitement surrounding stock splits.

But Wall Street’s rally really shifted into a higher gear in November after Donald Trump’s Election Day victory. President Trump’s first term in the White House saw the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite soar by 57%, 70%, and 142%, respectively. Even though past performance is no guarantee of future results, the clear indication is that investors are looking for a repeat performance during Trump’s second term.
While the table is certainly set for President Trump to deliver stock market returns that haven’t been witnessed in 20 years, the end result may differ dramatically from initial expectations.
Here’s why Wall Street is excited to have Donald Trump back in the White House
Before digging any deeper, it’s important to understand the dynamics behind the November rally in the Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite following Trump’s victory.
Perhaps the biggest catalyst of all for equities is having the prospect of increases in corporate income tax rates removed from the table. Whereas Democratic Party presidential nominee Kamala Harris had called for a 33% increase in the peak marginal corporate income tax rate, President Trump has said it should be further reduced.
Specifically, he pointed to lowering the peak marginal rate from 21% — which is already the lowest level since 1939 — to 15% for companies that manufacture their products in the U.S.
To build on this point, keeping the peak marginal corporate income tax rate at an 86-year low — or perhaps lowering it even further — should encourage many of America’s most-influential publicly traded companies to repurchase their stock.

Following the passage of Trump’s flagship Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) in December 2017, there was a marked uptick in cumulative share buybacks for S&P 500 companies. From 2011 through 2017, S&P 500 companies averaged around $100 billion to $150 billion in aggregate repurchases per quarter.
Afterward, this figure jumped to $200 billion to $250 billion in most quarters. Buyback activity can improve earnings per share (EPS) and make stocks more fundamentally attractive to investors.
There’s also the belief that the Trump administration will foster deregulation. By moving to minimize regulatory oversight, the red carpet will be rolled out for an increase in merger and acquisition activity.
President Trump can oversee historic stock market returns — but not in the way you might be thinking
During President Barack Obama’s eight years in office, as well as the combined eight years of President Trump’s and Joe Biden’s tenure in the White House, the stock market delivered decisively positive returns. Based on the catalysts listed above, Wall Street is expecting more gains when Trump leaves office in January 2029.
However, there’s a big reason to believe President Trump may oversee the first decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite since George W. Bush’s second term, which ended in January 2009. In other words, we would witness the first negative stock market returns for a presidential term in 20 years.
To be abundantly clear (note the italics, because this is an important point), the potential for stocks to head lower over the next four years has nothing specific to do with President Trump’s policy proposals. In fact, the catalyst that could send stocks notably lower awaited whichever candidate won the 2024 election.
The biggest concern for Wall Street during Trump’s presidency is that the stock market is historically pricey — and there’s simply no quick fix for extended valuations.

Though there are a number of ways to measure “value” on Wall Street, the S&P 500’s Shiller price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) does the most comprehensive job. The Shiller P/E ratio is also commonly known as the cyclically adjusted P/E ratio, or CAPE Ratio.
Unlike the traditional P/E ratio that relies on trailing-12-month EPS to decipher if a stock is cheap or pricey relative to its peers and/or the broader market, the Shiller P/E is based on average inflation-adjusted EPS over the prior 10 years. Analyzing 10 years’ worth of earnings history ensures that shock events can’t skew the calculation.
As of the closing bell on Jan. 22, the S&P 500’s Shiller P/E stood at 38.69, which is just shy of its high during the current bull market rally. It’s also more than double the average reading of 17.19, when back-tested to January 1871.
Although the Shiller P/E isn’t a timing tool, it does have a flawless track record of eventually foreshadowing bear markets for Wall Street. Spanning 154 years, there have been only six instances where the Shiller P/E has surpassed 30 during a bull market rally, including the present. Following the prior five occurrences, the Dow Jones and/or S&P 500 shed at least 20% of their value, if not considerably more.
History would suggest there’s a realistic chance of the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite ending in the red when President Donald Trump’s second term is over.

Relax: There’s good news, too!
While the prospect of the stock market going nowhere or ending lower over the next four years might not sit well with investors, there’s a bright side to historic data, as well.
On one hand, there’s no denying that stock market corrections and bear markets are perfectly normal aspects of the investing cycle. No matter how much well-wishing investors do, there is an abundance of catalysts that can tip a pricey stock market over the edge.
On the other hand, there’s a nonlinearity to the investing cycle that strongly favors (and rewards) patient investors.
In June 2023, shortly after the widely followed S&P 500 was confirmed to be in a new bull market, the analysts at Bespoke Investment Group released a data set on X that compared the length of every bull and bear market in the benchmark index dating back to the start of the Great Depression in September 1929.

On the other end of the spectrum, the 27 bull markets since September 1929 have endured for an average of 1,011 calendar days, or more than 3.5 times as long as the typical bear market.
A separate analysis from Crestmont Research looked back to the start of the 20th century and found even more compelling results for long-term investors.
Crestmont calculated the 20-year rolling total returns (“total” meaning inclusive of dividends) for the S&P 500 dating back to 1900. This resulted in 106 rolling 20-year periods, with ending years of 1919 through 2024.
Here’s the kicker: All 106 rolling 20-year periods generated a positive total return. Hypothetically speaking, purchasing an S&P 500 tracking index at any point since the beginning of the 20th century and holding that position for 20 years would have been profitable 100% of the time.
Regardless of whether the stock market thrives, flops, or treads water during President Trump’s second term, the long-term outlook for equities remains promising.
With President Donald Trump’s pro-business policies and the strong economy, many experts are predicting that stock market returns will reach levels not seen in over 20 years. The stock market has been on a steady rise since Trump took office, and with recent tax cuts and deregulation, investors are bullish on the market’s potential.Historically, stock market returns have averaged around 7-8% annually. However, some analysts believe that under Trump’s leadership, returns could exceed this average and potentially reach double-digit figures. This would be a significant milestone, as the last time the stock market saw such high returns was during the dot-com bubble of the late 1990s.

The Bears reached a deal to hire Johnson as their next head coach Monday afternoon, according to multiple media reports, including a post from the coaching agency representing Johnson. The team made the official announcement Tuesday, and Bears fans have reason to celebrate.
Because while a front office whose words and actions don’t always align cited different goals for its coaching search, the success of the Bears’ next hire will hinge most strongly on one facet: maximizing the potential of Williams, whom they selected first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The three offensive coordinators and two head coaches he navigated as a rookie stunted that goal. Now, a high-ceiling talent has the chance to recover and grow in his sophomore year.
Williams learned, through a tumultuous rookie year, how powerful stability could be. Hiring a head coach who calls plays, and thus won’t bolt for a promotion elsewhere, can create an offensive advantage. So yes, consider him a fan of the Johnson hire.
“Selfishly, I want an offensive-minded guy,” Williams told the St. Brown brothers, “so I can build with him and be with that coach for the next 19, 17, 15 years.”
What Williams, Bears offense might look like under Johnson
Just before he admitted he wanted an offensive head coach, Williams mentioned he wanted a head coach who is “strong-minded” and “a leader of men.” His franchise touted that emphatically during a head coach searching process that included interviews (some virtual, some in person) with 17 announced candidates.
But the Bears did not commit in recent weeks to hiring an offensive head coach. Team president Kevin Warren insisted it was important to enter the search undecided, while general manager Ryan Poles declined to confirm hiring an offensive coach for Williams was necessary.
“For a young quarterback, obviously there’s an ideal fit, but at the end of the day, you gotta look at all the characteristics of what you’re looking for in the head coach,” Poles said Jan. 7. “And then you got to see what’s the best bundle of those to bring in the building. Obviously we’re talking about leadership, accountability, some of those important things that carry over regardless of what the situation is. Those have to be there. To ignore those just to go to the other side [of scheme strength] I think is a bad deal, too.
“So really it’s the candidate that has the best collection of all of those things, and yes, the development of a young quarterback is gonna be a huge factor in that.”

Williams completed 62.5% of passes for 3,541 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions as a rookie. His 87.8 passer rating ranked 25th in the league. Williams’ attempts to make plays, paired with shoddy protection, led to a league-high 68 sacks for a league-high 466 yards.
With Johnson, the Bears hope they can protect Williams better and give him better schematic wrinkles to succeed. The architect of the Lions’ No. 1 scoring offense is no sure bet, but league sources expect a significant upgrade.
One former offensive coordinator, who’s now an NFC assistant, expects an uptick in play-action passes after the Lions ranked first in the league with 36.6% this season compared to the Bears’ 30th-most 17%. Williams could see more time under center, too, after the Lions ranked last with 16 attempts in shotgun compared to the Bears’ 37.
“It’ll be dramatic change,” the former coordinator told Yahoo Sports. “More of a pro-style deal than what they were trying to run this year. Gonna have to retrain the QB.”
An NFC assistant who has worked with a first-round quarterback pick expected some schematic continuity after considering the depths of coaching trees, and some zone-run influence overlap between Johnson’s time under Adam Gase and the Los Angeles Rams’ Sean McVay, who influenced 2024 Bears coordinators Shane Waldron and Thomas Brown.
Williams is focused less on specific scheme and more on how a head coach can offer an edge or a disadvantage on macro considerations.
“So I can also learn and grow and things like that from him,” Williams said on the St. Brown Podcast. “[Someone who’s] good with the clock, good with helping control the game … helping find the right guys to help win championships.”

Near-unanimous opinion says he’s a brilliant schematic mind who will be an advantage for any coaching staff. Six seasons in the NFC North will contribute to his game-planning edge as he stays in the division with his new role.
How Johnson’s leadership strengths complement his creativity remains to be seen.
“He’s a phenomenal coordinator, he’s a phenomenal schemer, play designer,” one AFC general manager told Yahoo Sports on Monday. “And look, maybe you put him in a position where he’s like [San Francisco 49ers head coach] Kyle [Shanahan] where you’re like, ‘Hey, we’re really hiring you to be the OC-plus’ because he’s just that good at the role.’
“My inclination is that that’s gonna be a tougher transition for him in the head-coaching seat. I think he’s probably smart enough to manage everything in terms of designing the offense and running the team so maybe it doesn’t end up mattering. But I would actually have some pretty significant reservations there with him.”
One key trait Lions players cited in Johnson’s personality is his intensity. While that may mesh with differing degrees of success across the league, Williams said he seeks that with the Bears.
Sure, St. Brown said in jest how difficult Williams is to coach. But the quarterback himself acknowledged he can be particular and wants a coach who will embrace that.
“A dude that’s got a fire to him,” Williams said. “I don’t want people [who don’t] have a fire. I think I’ve got a fire about me that certain people can’t coach or certain people can’t be around or it doesn’t work in that way. So I think that’s a big part of it.”
The Bears, with their hire, indicated they think so, too.

‘We are going to the natty.’ Quinshon Judkins made sacrifices to help Ohio State achieve its goals
ATLANTA – Quinshon Judkins has a thing for national championships. Just minutes after Ohio State fans had to watch Michigan celebrate winning their first national title in over a quarter century, Judkins announced he was transferring to the Buckeyes.
That announcement came just over a year ago. “Feels like yesterday, though. It’s crazy,” Judkins said.
The running back sat in the locker room at AT&T Stadium, taking everything in. The Scarlet and Gray had just beaten Texas 28-14 in the Cotton Bowl to book a place in the national championship game.
Judkins, who only had 36 rushing yards but scored two touchdowns against the Longhorns, watched as Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer sacked former teammate Quinn Ewers, scooping up the fumbled ball and running 83 yards to the opposite endzone to all but seal the win.

It was an emotional moment for Sawyer, a fourth-year Buckeye from Columbus, Ohio, and Judkins only had one thing on his mind.
“We are going to the natty,” Judkins recalled thinking.
A native of Pike Road, Alabama, Judkins doesn’t have the same connection to the Scarlet and Gray as Sawyer. Having only been at Ohio State for just over a year after two seasons at Ole Miss, Judkins doesn’t have the memories of being a Buckeye like many of his teammates.
He will remember the journey the Scarlet and Gray have taken over the last year to get to Atlanta and play for it all against Notre Dame on Monday night.
“Man, to be in the position that we are in right now is truly amazing, and I’m just so blessed,” Judkins said. “Just speaking for myself, like, I believe in this team, we’ve been through so much, and the adversity that everyone has been through on this team, and everyone has a story and it’s just truly amazing how God brought us all together to go out there and just give it our all.”
Like all of his teammates, Judkins has sacrificed to be on the precipice of winning a national championship. But Judkins may have sacrificed more than most. In each season with the Rebels, Judkins rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 15-plus touchdowns. He was the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2023 and a two-time first-team All-SEC performer.
When Judkins transferred to Ohio State, he knew he wouldn’t have the same production. He came to Columbus excited to share the workload with returning senior running back TreVeyon Henderson, looking to lessen his workload after 545 carries over his first two years of college football.
“It’s helped me so much,” Judkins said of splitting carries with Henderson. “And just to be able to, regardless if I got the ball X amount of times or whatever, it doesn’t matter because I’ll do whatever for this team. If they need me to get 500 carries, I’ll go do it, just because this team means so much to me.”
Judkins has been productive for the Buckeyes despite fewer carries this season. The running back averages 5.2 yards per carry and is 40 yards from reaching 1,000 for the third consecutive season. While he hasn’t had the massive rushing production game-by-game, Judkins has churned out yards, becoming a reliable scoring weapon for the Scarlet and Gray with 13 total touchdowns this year, second most on the team.
Judkins has also helped make Henderson better. The senior, who was banged up each of the last two seasons, is on pace for his best season since his freshman year, with 963 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns. Henderson’s 7.33 yards per carry ranks him in the top 15 nationally.
If Henderson manages 33 rushing yards and Judkins has 40, it will be the third time in Ohio State history two players have rushed for 1,000 yards or more in a single season.

“Just having Quinshon, that has helped a lot,” Henderson said in November. “Splitting carries and splitting time with him, that has played a huge role.”
In Ohio State’s three Playoff games, the Buckeyes have averaged just under 140 rushing yards per game. While Judkins has averaged only 4.1 yards per carry, he has four postseason scores and is set to play in the national championship on Monday night.

“Most definitely,” Judkins said. “And we’re in a great spot right now.”

TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins Could Both Achieve 1,000-Yard Rushing Seasons During CFP Title Game
For a veteran-laden team focused on winning the national championship since the roster was formed last winter, all eyes within the program are focused squarely on just one prize – capturing the CFP national title with a victory over Notre Dame on Monday night.
Even as 7.5-8.5-point favorites depending on the betting service, Ohio State doesn’t appear to be taking anything for granted as it prepares for a shot at a legacy-defining win.
The expectation is Irish head coach Marcus Freeman will have a comprehensive game plan to give his squad a chance and the Buckeyes will therefore need a complete performance to hoist the CFP trophy.
And while much of the chatter specific to Ohio State’s offense versus Notre Dame’s defense has centered on if/how the Irish can slow down Jeremiah Smith, Will Howard and the rest of OSU’s vaunted passing attack, the Buckeyes could also make some noise on the ground which would seemingly help open up passing lanes against the Irish’s No. 2 ranked pass defense (165.3 ypg).
That of course means the two-headed tailback monster of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins will be called upon in some fashion to keep Notre Dame’s defense honest. With that, both guys will have a shot to not only contribute to a national championship game victory but also make some history in the process.
Through 15 games, Henderson has 967 rushing yards while Judkins stands at 960, meaning TreVeyon needs 33 yards and Quinshon 40 for each to reach 1,000 yard rushing yards on the season.
If they can reach those markers, it’ll be just the third time in Ohio State history that a pair of offensive players reached the 1,000-yard barrier in the same season.
Most recently, tailback Carlos Hyde (1,521) and quarterback Braxton Miller (1,068) accomplished the feat in 2013, while playing 11 and 12 games respectively that season. The only other time this happened in school annals – including the only instance it was done by two running backs – occurred in 1975 as Archie Griffin (1,450) and Pete Johnson (1,059) turned the trick while playing a 12-game season.
Back to Henderson and Judkins, they’ve each already played 15 games this season. Henderson is averaging 64.5 rushing yards per game while Judkins stands at 64.0 per contest. Across three CFP games, Henderson’s bettered his season averages with 9.0 yards per carry while cranking out 72 yards per game (24 att, 216 yds). Judkins has actually averaged fewer yards per game in CFP play (51.7) but is gaining 5.96 yards per attempt. Said differently, Henderson’s 33 yards needed and Judkins’ 40 to crack 1,000 each is well within reach.
It won’t be easy however as the Irish rank No. 28 in the country allowing just 3.67 yards per carry and 41st allowing 133 rushing yards per game. Notre Dame swallowed up the Indiana and Georgia rushing attacks in CFP contests, holding them to 63 and 62 yards respectively. That said, Penn State had its share of the success in last week’s CFP semifinal, racking up 204 yards on 4.9 per try. Tailbacks Nick Singleton (15 for 84, 3 TD) and Kaytron Allen (19 for 82) each found some creases if not overwhelming success in what evolved into a 27-24 win for the Irish.
Again, the one and only goal next Monday in Atlanta is to Win. The. Damn. Game. but if Ohio State can also Run. The. Damn. Ball. with success, Henderson and Judkins could make some cool school history in joining Archie and Pete as the only running back duos to each go for 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.
