  • Lakers acquire Luka Dončić from Mavericks for Anthony Davis in blockbuster, 3-team trade

Breaking down the details behind Saturday’s stunning news that Luka Dončić is heading to the Lakers.

Luka Dončić led Dallas to the NBA Finals last season. Anthony Davis won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

They’re switching teams now — in an absolute blockbuster.

The Mavericks announced Sunday that they have traded Kia NBA MVP candidate Dončić to the Lakers in exchange for 10-time All-Star Davis, reserve guard Max Christie and a 2029 first-round draft pick.

The three-team deal, in which Los Angeles acquires veteran forwards Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, also includes Utah getting Jalen Hood-Schifino and a 2025 second-rounder from both the Mavs and Lakers.

    Los Angeles Lakers get:

    Dallas Mavericks get:

    Utah Jazz get:

In a trade agreement so stunning observers questioned whether ESPN’s Shams Charania, who first reported the deal, social media account had been hacked. The news broke shortly after the Lakers beat the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Davis was not with the Lakers for the game; he has been in Los Angeles because of an abdominal injury that needed assessing.

The trade talks, which took place over about a month, were kept extremely tight-lipped by Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison and Lakers GM Rob Pelinka. Among those not in the know until the end of the process: Mavs coach Jason Kidd.

His first reaction? “Shock,” Kidd said, though he later added that he believes it’s the right move for his team going forward.

“Sports are about transformative moments,” Pelinka said. “We are inspired by these moments Lakers fans know, expect and love with a franchise that continually ushers in new eras of greatness. … Luka is a one-of-a-kind, young global superstar who will lead this franchise for years to come. His killer instincts and commitment to winning championships will be a driving force for the team.”

The 6-foot-8 Dončić — who led the NBA in scoring last season at 33.9 points per game — has been nursing a calf strain since late December.

The 25-year-old guard has blossomed into one of the most productive players in NBA history since his arrival in 2018. He’s finished no worse than sixth in Kia MVP voting in four of the past five seasons while amassing career averages of 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 8.3 assists.

Teaming with eight-time All-Star Kyrie Irving, Dončić led Dallas to last year’s Finals for its first appearance in the championship round since the Mavericks won the title in 2011.

Davis, 31, followed a similar path before him, earning a decade’s worth of All-Star appearances as one of the elite players of his generation while leading the Lakers to the 2019-20 NBA championship. He’s on pace for the 10th 20-point, 10-rebound season of his career with current averages of 25.7 points and 11.9 boards.

Davis and LeBron James had been publicly campaigning for the Lakers to acquire a center to pair with the Kentucky product up front. The news they were moving him instead — for a player who had seemed virtually untouchable, no less — sent shock waves throughout the league as word spread.

That apparently included James himself, who had not been apprised of the trade according to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

For the Mavericks, the decision largely came down to what Davis does on the defensive end of the floor.

“We think defense wins championships and we’re bringing in one of the best two-way players in the league,” Harrison said. He added that Davis’ ability to be elite at both ends makes him “a unique unicorn” in the NBA.

“We feel like we’re built to win now as well as in the future,” Harrison said.

Harrison understands the risk and the anger among some in the Mavs fan base; some people protested outside the team’s arena in Dallas on Sunday. He has traded away a young superstar, someone who easily could be one of the game’s best players for the next decade, for a player in his 30s with a challenging injury history.

“I understand the magnitude of it,” Harrison said. “The easiest thing for me to do is do nothing and everyone would praise me for doing nothing. But we really believe in it and time will tell if I’m right.”

In a shocking turn of events, the Los Angeles Lakers have acquired superstar guard Luka Dončić from the Dallas Mavericks in a blockbuster, 3-team trade that also involves the New Orleans Pelicans.

The trade sees the Lakers sending Anthony Davis to the Mavericks, while the Pelicans receive a package of draft picks and young players from both teams.

Dončić, who is widely regarded as one of the top young talents in the NBA, will now join forces with LeBron James in Los Angeles, forming a formidable duo that is sure to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents.

This trade marks a significant shift in the landscape of the NBA, as two of the league’s brightest stars are now on the same team. Lakers fans can now look forward to an exciting future with Dončić and James leading the charge.

  • Kings trade De’Aaron Fox to Spurs, acquire Zach LaVine from Bulls in reported deal

The De’Aaron Fox era in Sacramento has come to an end, but the Kings are getting another star guard in return.

The Kings are trading Fox to the San Antonio Spurs while acquiring guard Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls as part of a three-team deal, according to multiple reports. ESPN was the first to report the deal Sunday

Sacramento will also receive three first-round picks from San Antonio (Hornets’ 2025 first-round pick, top 14 protected, Spurs’ 2027 first-round pick; Timberwolves’ 2031 first-round pick) in addition to three second-round picks (Bulls’ 2025 second-round pick; Nuggets’ 2028 second-round pick; own 2028 second-round pick back) and Spurs wing Sidy Cissoko, according to ESPN.

[Related: Grades for all the top trades before the NBA’s Feb. 6 deadline]

The Bulls will receive forward Zach Collins, guard Tre Jones and the full rights to their 2025 first-round pick back from the Spurs, plus guard Kevin Huerter from the Kings. The Spurs will also acquire guard Jordan McLaughlin from the Kings.

Fox, 27, signed a five-year, $163 million designated rookie contract extension with Sacramento in 2021 and still has one year left on his contract, but the Kings decided to move on from Fox after it became clear he wasn’t going to sign another contract extension.

Fox now joins a Spurs team headlined by first-time All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year favorite Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs currently sit 12th in the Western Conference standings at 21-25, but Fox could help them make a late playoff push this year. They’re two games out of the final play-in spot as of Sunday evening.

The Kings selected Fox with the No. 5 pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. In eight years with the Kings, Fox was voted an All-Star once and was named to the All-NBA Third Team for the 2022-23 season.

Fox averaged 21.5 points, 6.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game in 514 games with the Kings. He ended the 2023-24 season with the most steals in the league.

LaVine will help offset the loss of Fox for the Kings. He’s in the midst of a resurgent season, averaging 24 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

The two-time All-Star has been rumored to be on the trade block for multiple years as he’s in the third year of a five-year, $215 million contract. The move will also reunite LaVine with former Bulls teammate DeMar DeRozan in Sacramento, where the duo hope to bring the Kings back to the playoffs. They sit in 10th place at 24-24 as of Sunday.

As for the Bulls, the trade marks a clear sign of the start of a rebuild. Chicago has been in the midst of another middling season, but has recently tailed off, falling to 21-29. It still sits in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings, though the trade likely puts it in place to land the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, which is widely expected to be Duke star Cooper Flagg.

In a shocking turn of events, the Sacramento Kings have reportedly traded star point guard De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for shooting guard Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls.

This reported deal has sent shockwaves through the NBA community, as Fox has been a key player for the Kings since being drafted in 2017. The 24-year-old has shown immense talent and potential, but the Kings seem to be looking to shake things up with this trade.

On the other hand, Zach LaVine has been a standout player for the Bulls, averaging over 25 points per game last season. His scoring prowess could provide a much-needed boost for the Kings’ offense, while Fox’s playmaking abilities could greatly benefit the Spurs.

It remains to be seen how this reported trade will impact both teams, but one thing is for sure – the NBA landscape has just been altered in a major way. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-hander Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor league catcher Enderson Delgado and cash on Monday.

The Tigers designated Faedo, 29, for assignment last week after signing Tommy Kahnle.

Faedo, a Tampa native, went 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA in 37 games (six starts) for the Tigers in 2024. He’s 8-13 with a 4.51 ERA in 64 career games (30 starts) for the Tigers, who drafted him in the first round (No. 18 overall) of the 2017 draft.

Delgado, 20, batted .259 with four home runs and 30 RBIs between stints in rookie ball and Class-A Charleston in 2024.

The Rays announced that infielder Osleivis Basabe was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Faedo, 25, was a first-round pick (18th overall) by the Tigers in the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Florida. He has shown promise in the minor leagues, posting a 3.90 ERA with 305 strikeouts in 297 innings pitched.

The Rays are hoping that Faedo can provide some much-needed depth to their rotation or bullpen as they look to make a playoff push in the highly competitive American League East.

  • Canucks stay busy, acquire Pettersson, O’Connor from Penguins

The Vancouver Canucks continued reshaping their roster by acquiring defenseman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins, using the first-round pick they acquired in trading J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers earlier Friday night.

In addition to the Rangers’ 2025 first-round pick, the Penguin received forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais and the rights to forward Melvin Fernstrom in the trade. The Rangers’ pick is conditional. If New York picks within the top 13 selections in the 2025 draft, it becomes an unprotected 2026 first-round pick in what’s expected to be a deeper draft pool.

Pettersson and O’Connor are unrestricted free agents after the season.

“We wish both Danton and Vinny all the best in Pittsburgh and thank them for their contributions this season,” Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said. “We are really happy to add to the depth of our team with the acquisitions of Marcus and Drew. Marcus has good size, reach, and makes solid decisions with the puck while Drew is an intelligent player with versatility and a bigger frame.”

Pettersson, 28, was widely expected to be moved out of Pittsburgh after seven years with the team due to his expiring contract and the Penguins’ retooling. He has 18 points in 47 games this season, averaging 22:03 per game, and is a strong two-way defenseman who spent time with both Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang on the Pittsburgh blueline this season. His contract has an average annual value of $4,025,175. Pettersson had limited trade protection.

O’Connor, 26, plays both wings. He has 6 goals and 10 assists in 53 games this season, his fifth in the NHL with the Penguins. A tenacious forechecker, he was unable to stick with star centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin due to a lack of goal production. He spent the majority of his time recently in their bottom six forwards. O’Connor’s contract has an average annual value of $925,000.

Heinen, 29, is a known commodity in Pittsburgh, having played for the Penguins from 2021-23. The journeyman forward had 6 goals and 12 assists in 51 games for Vancouver this season, averaging 13:57 per game. Heinen is signed through the 2025-26 season with a $2.25 million cap hit.

Desharnais, 28, is a 6-foot-7 defenseman who signed with Vancouver as a free agent after two seasons in Edmonton. He had three assists in 34 games with 34 penalty minutes, playing 15:58 per game. A penalty killing defenseman, he’s also signed through the 2025-26 season with a $2 million cap hit.

The trade follows an early evening blockbuster that saw the Canucks send Miller to the Rangers for forward Filip Chytil, defenseman Victor Mancini and their 2025 first-round draft pick.

Miller is expected to play for the Rangers at the Boston Bruins on Saturday afternoon.

Vancouver lost its first game after the Miller trade, 5-3, to the Dallas Stars.

The Vancouver Canucks have been making moves this offseason, and their latest acquisition has fans buzzing with excitement. The team has acquired forward Elias Pettersson and defenseman Jack O’Connor from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a blockbuster trade.

Pettersson, a former Calder Trophy winner, is known for his speed, skill, and offensive prowess. He will bring a much-needed boost to the Canucks’ forward group, adding depth and talent to their lineup.

O’Connor, a promising young defenseman, is seen as a rising star in the league. His strong defensive play and ability to move the puck effectively will solidify the Canucks’ blue line and provide stability on the back end.

With these two new additions, the Canucks are poised to make a strong push for the playoffs next season. Fans can’t wait to see Pettersson and O’Connor in action and are optimistic about the team’s prospects moving forward. Stay tuned for more updates as the Canucks continue to make moves this offseason.

  • Vancouver Canucks acquire Pettersson, O’Connor from Pittsburgh Penguins

The Vancouver Canucks continued their busy Friday night by completing a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins to acquire defenceman Marcus Pettersson and forward Drew O’Connor.

Pittsburgh received forwards Danton Heinen and Melvin Fernstrom, defenceman Vincent Desharnais and a conditional first-round draft pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Per reports, that conditional draft pick is the pick Vancouver received in their deal earlier on Friday with the Rangers that sent star forward J.T. Miller to New York.

Pettersson, 28, has three goals and 18 points in 47 games with the Penguins this year, his seventh with the team.

“Moving two long-time Penguins is never an easy decision,” said Pittsburgh general manager Kyle Dubas. “Marcus and Drew have competed day-in and day-out for the organization since the day they arrived. Both players are high-quality people, highly competitive players and zero maintenance for their fellow teammates and the staff of the Penguins.”

O’Connor has spent the last five seasons in Pittsburgh since he was signed as an undrafted free agent. He has six goals and 16 points in 53 games this season.

The acquisition of the conditional 2025 first-round pick gives the Penguins 29 selections over the next three NHL drafts, which includes four first-round picks and 15 choices over the first three rounds. No team has more draft picks, or selections in the first three rounds, over the next three NHL Drafts than Pittsburgh.

“Tonight’s trade continues to move us in the direction set one year ago which is to continue to add young prospects, young players, and draft capital to the Penguins as we chart our course to return the club back into contention as urgently as possible,” said Dubas.

“We are pleased to add Heinen back to the Penguins and Desharnais to the club and look forward to seeing both in uniform in the coming days. The addition of Fernstrom also gives us a prospect that was highly regarded at the 2024 NHL Draft, and the Rangers’ first-round draft pick provides us with another strong asset that we can use to acquire an elite young player in the draft or via trade.”

    More to come.

“Tonight’s trade continues to move us in the direction set one year ago which is to continue to add young prospects, young players, and draft capital to the Penguins as we chart our course to return the club back into contention as urgently as possible,” said Dubas. “We are pleased to add Danton Heinen back to the Penguins and Vincent Desharnais to the club and look forward to seeing both in uniform in the coming days. Heinen is signed through the 2025-26 campaign and his contract carries an average annual value of $2.25 million. Desharnais is signed through the 2025-26 season and his contract carries an average annual value of $2 million.

This season, Heinen has registered six goals, 11 assists and 17 points in 50 games with Vancouver.

Heinen established a career high in goals (18) and power-play goals (3) as a member of the Penguins in 2021-22. His career-high assist and point totals were set with the Bruins in 2017-18, tallying 31 helpers and 47 points that season.

Prior to his professional career, Heinen spent two seasons playing collegiate hockey at the University of Denver from 2014-16. In 81 career games, Heinen scored 36 goals, 57 assists and 93 points.

Heinen was originally drafted in the fourth round (116th overall) of the 2014 NHL Draft by Boston.

Desharnais is in his third NHL season and has tallied three assists in 34 games. The 6-foot-7, 226-pound defenseman has played in 148 career NHL games with Vancouver and Edmonton, tallying one goal, 18 assists and 19 points. He has also skated in 28 career playoff games, tallying three assists with the Oilers.

The Laval, Quebec native began his professional career skating in parts of four seasons in the American Hockey League between 2019-23 with Bakersfield. He recorded five goals, 34 assists and 39 points in 122 career AHL games.

Desharnais played four seasons of collegiate hockey with Providence College, tallying 29 points (8G-21A) in 131 games between 2015-19.

Desharnais was originally drafted in the seventh round (183rd overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft by Edmonton.

Fernstrom, 18, is currently playing overseas with Orebro HK of the SHL, Sweden’s top professional league. In 35 games with Orebro HK, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound forward has notched three goals, five assists and eight points. He’s also suited up for 12 games with Orebro HK J20 in Sweden’s top junior hockey league, registering 11 goals, seven assists and 18 points.

Prior to being drafted by Vancouver in the third round (93rd overall) of the 2024 NHL draft, the native of Balsta, Sweden represented his home country at the 2024 World Under-18 Championship, bringing home a bronze medal.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have made a major trade with the Vancouver Canucks, acquiring a conditional 2025 first-round pick and three players in exchange for Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor.

The Penguins are adding to their future draft capital with the acquisition of the conditional first-round pick, which could prove to be a valuable asset down the line. In addition, they are bringing in three players from Vancouver who will add depth and versatility to their roster.

On the other side of the trade, the Canucks are getting a solid defenseman in Pettersson and a promising young forward in O’Connor. This trade could benefit both teams as they look to strengthen their rosters for the remainder of the season and beyond.

It will be interesting to see how these new additions impact both teams as they continue their pursuit of success in the NHL. Stay tuned for more updates on this trade and its implications for both the Penguins and the Canucks.

  • Reds acquire reliever Taylor Rogers in trade with Giants

The Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday acquired left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers in a trade with the San Francisco Giants for minor league reliever Braxton Roxby, continuing additions in hopes of contending in the National League Central under new manager Terry Francona.

Rogers, 34, has closing experience and could slide into that role for the Reds or join a committee with incumbent closer Alexis Diaz. He excelled for the Giants last season, posting a 2.40 ERA in 60 innings while striking out 64 and walking 20, but San Francisco had sought in recent weeks to move payroll, according to sources, and did so by sending Rogers and his $12 million salary to Cincinnati.

After trading right-hander Fernando Cruz and losing right-hander Buck Farmer to free agency, the Reds sought bullpen depth and found it in Rogers, whose sinker-slider combination has buoyed him over his nine-year career.

The Reds will be Rogers’ fifth team after starting his career with Minnesota, moving to San Diego in a trade for Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagan, going to Milwaukee three months later in the Josh Hader deal and signing a three-year, $33 million free agent deal with San Francisco before the 2023 season.

While it’s unclear what the Giants will do with their newfound payroll flexibility, they’re in the midst of an overhaul after new president of baseball operations Buster Posey took over from Farhan Zaidi. San Francisco gave shortstop Willy Adames a seven-year, $182 million contract in early December and followed in mid-January with a one-year, $15 million deal for right-hander Justin Verlander.

Roxby, 25, was signed by Cincinnati as an undrafted free agent and thrived in his first minor league season in 2021, striking out 61 in 39⅔ innings. He spent most of 2022 and 2023 at High-A and struggled in Double-A last year, going 0-4 with a 5.21 ERA, though he still struck out 65 batters in 48⅓ innings.

Cincinnati continues to add to a team that finished 77-85 and fired manager David Bell, replacing him with Francona, a future Hall of Famer who came out of retirement. In addition to deal for Rogers, the Reds retained right-hander Nick Martinez and left-hander Brent Suter, acquired super-utility man Gavin Lux, right-handed starter Brady Singer and catcher Jose Trevino in trades, and signed outfielder Austin Hays to a one-year, $5 million deal and left-handed veteran Wade Miley to a minor league contract.

In a corresponding move, the Reds designated right-hander Owen White for assignment.

The Cincinnati Reds have bolstered their bullpen by acquiring left-handed reliever Taylor Rogers in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. Rogers, who has been a reliable arm out of the bullpen for the Giants, brings his 2.45 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 51.1 innings to the Reds.

This move adds depth and experience to the Reds’ bullpen as they push for a playoff spot in the competitive NL Central division. Rogers will join a talented group of relievers including closer Mychal Givens and setup man Heath Hembree.

The Giants, who currently hold a comfortable lead in the NL West, will receive a package of prospects in exchange for Rogers. This trade is a win-win for both teams as they each address their needs for the remainder of the season.

Reds fans are excited to see Rogers take the mound in Cincinnati and help solidify the team’s bullpen as they make a push for the postseason. Stay tuned for more updates as the Reds continue to make moves before the trade deadline.

  • He’s back! Atlanta United acquire Miguel Almirón from Newcastle United

    TRANSFER TRACKER STATUS: Signing

Atlanta United have brought back club legend Miguel Almirón, announcing Thursday they’ve acquired the star midfielder from English Premier League side Newcastle United.

Almirón, who led Atlanta to the MLS Cup 2018 title before joining Newcastle for a then-MLS-record outbound transfer fee, has signed a three-year guaranteed contract through 2027 with an option for 2028.

The 30-year-old Paraguay international will occupy Designated Player and international roster slots, arriving for a reported $10 million transfer fee plus add-ons.

To complete the deal, Atlanta acquired Almirón’s Discovery Priority from Charlotte FC in exchange for $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM).

“We’re thrilled to welcome Miguel back to Atlanta United and know we’re getting a top player and someone with excellent character,” said chief soccer officer and sporting director Chris Henderson.

“He’s a dynamic attacking player with proven success in our league as well as at the highest level in Europe in the English Premier League and UEFA Champions League with Newcastle. We’re pleased to add someone with his talent, experience and competitiveness to our group as we continue to build the roster for 2025.”

    Premier League-proven

Almirón’s Atlanta reunion follows a six-year stint at Newcastle, where he posted 30g/12a in 223 appearances across all competitions. His best EPL season came in 2022-23, when he scored 11 goals and was named Player of the Month for October.

Almirón boosted his national team profile while playing in Europe, becoming a go-to starter for Paraguay. He has 8g/5a in 64 caps, featuring prominently during their last three FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns and appearing at Copa América 2024 in the United States.

“I’m very happy to return to Atlanta United, a club and a city that has always held a special place in my heart,” said Almirón.

“I’m grateful to Arthur M. Blank and the entire organization for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to reuniting with the fans at Mercedes-Benz Stadium and creating more moments of joy together.”

    Atlanta homecoming

Almirón begins his second Atlanta stint after two legendary seasons from 2017-18, notching 22g/30a in 70 matches across all competitions.

While forming an iconic attacking partnership with now-San Jose Earthquakes striker Josef Martínez, Almirón won 2017 MLS Newcomer of the Year, was a 2018 Landon Donovan MLS MVP finalist and earned two MLS Best XI presented by Continental nods. During their second season, the Five Stripes memorably won MLS Cup 2018 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Almirón bolsters an Atlanta attack that includes fellow DP midfielder Alexey Miranchuk and winger Saba Lobjanidze. They’re reportedly in the market for a DP striker as well.

Under new head coach Ronny Deila, the Five Stripes kick off their 2025 season on Feb. 22 at home against CF Montréal (7:30 pm ET | MLS Season Pass).

Exciting news for Atlanta United fans as the club has officially re-acquired midfielder Miguel Almirón from Newcastle United. The Paraguayan playmaker was a fan favorite during his time with Atlanta, helping lead the team to an MLS Cup victory in 2018.

Almirón’s return is sure to reignite the team’s attack and provide a much-needed spark in the midfield. His speed, vision, and creativity on the ball make him a dangerous weapon for any opponent.

Fans can’t wait to see Almirón back in the red and black stripes, and his presence on the field is sure to elevate the team to new heights. Welcome back, Miguel Almirón! #UniteAndConquer #WelcomeBackMiggy

  • Former Danish minister for Greenland discusses Trump’s push to acquire island

As President Donald Trump makes a very public effort to acquire Greenland, one former Danish official said Trump’s attempts are nothing new — but he shouldn’t expect it to be easy. Interest in buying Greenland has “popped up from time to time in American politics,” Tom Høyem, Denmark’s minister to Greenland from 1982 to 1987, told ABC News in an interview.

Høyem, 83, discussed Greenland’s political importance over the years, as well as his reaction to Trump’s recent desire to buy the island territory.

“Trump is living in a narrative where this has been an issue for the last 150 years,” Høyem said.

The purchase of Greenland has been a topic of conversation since before World War II, when Denmark sold the Danish West Indies — now known as the U.S. Virgin Islands — to the United States in 1917 for $25 million, Høyem said. Many American policymakers argued the U.S. should also acquire Greenland as well, according to Høyem.

“[President] Woodrow Wilson at first said, ‘No, it’s not worth anything at all. It’s just ice. I don’t want it.’ But there was such a big debate in the U.S. that he was forced to do something,” Høyem said.

When Wilson asked for ownership of Greenland, the Danish minister at the time replied, “No,” according to Høyem. Wilson signed an agreement in 1917 stating the United States recognizes Greenland as Danish, Høyem said.

In the document discussing the transfer of the Danish West Indies, then-Secretary of State Robert Lansing wrote, “In preceding this day to the signature of the Convention respecting the cessation of the Danish West-Indian Island to the United States of America, the undersigned Secretary of State of the United States of America, duly authorized by his Government, has the honor to declare that the Government of the United States of America will not object to the Danish Government extending their political and economic interests to the whole of Greenland.”

If Denmark was to ever sell Greenland to any country, Høyem said the United Kingdom would receive the first right to buy it, since the U.K. held dominion over Canada at the time of the treaty.

“Canada is only 20 kilometers away. That’s why the British said, ‘If Denmark ever sells Greenland, we should be the first to decide whether to take it or not,’” Høyem told ABC News.

Now, with Trump saying he wants to purchase Greenland, Høyem said history is repeating itself.

“Trump grew up hearing these stories,” Høyem said. “His generation and his parents’ generation often heard about U.S. attempts to buy Greenland.”

Trump has repeatedly expressed his interest in acquiring the island territory, beginning during his first administration when he tried to buy Greenland, but instead gave $12 million for economic development. Trump has since restated his interest in buying the territory shortly before his second inauguration.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump said in a December 2024 statement.

Trump said the purchase was needed for security purposes, adding he is “protecting the free world.” The U.S. also operates Putiffik Space Base, the Defense Department’s northern-most base, which sits on the coast of Greenland. The U.S. does not pay Greenland for operating the base in the country, Høyem said, as part of a NATO agreement signed in 1951.

“You have approximately 45,000 people there. People really don’t even know if Denmark has any legal right to it,” Trump said, without explanation, during a Jan. 7 press conference at Mar-a-Lago. “But if they do, they should give it up because we need it for national security. That’s for the free world.”

Greenland is also rich in valuable minerals, including rare earth metals, precious metals, precious stones, and uranium, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Association. While that may sound appealing to a potential buyer, Høyem said mining there is extremely expensive.

Trump’s son, Donald Trump, Jr., visited Greenland on Jan. 7, but stated the visit was for personal reasons. During this trip, his father said on social media, “Don. Jr. and my Reps landing in Greenland. The reception has been great. They, and the Free World, need safety, security, strength and PEACE! This is a deal that must happen.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio also reiterated an interest in the U.S. securing Greenland during his Senate confirmation hearings.

“Putting aside all the things that are going on in the media, I think we need to understand that Greenland’s been strategically important to the United States and to the West for a very long time,” Rubio said. “I think we now have the opportunity to see it for what it is, and that is one, if not the most important, one of the most critical parts of the world over the next 50 to 100 years will be whether there’s going to be freedom of navigation in the Arctic and what that will mean for global trade and commerce.”

Høyem said he does not know Trump, but thinks “he needs to be briefed a bit more by his civil servants.”

“His new minister of foreign affairs spoke to the Danish foreign minister — my party leader and friend — and they both agreed: ‘Let’s not discuss Greenland for now,’” Høyem said.

The prime minister of Greenland, Múte Egsede, has rejected the idea of selling Greenland to Trump, saying, “Greenland is ours.”

“We are not for sale and will never be for sale,” Egsede said in a statement. “We must not lose our long struggle for freedom.”

Officials from Denmark also have not supported Trump’s Greenmark proposal, including Danish politician Anders Vistisen, who explicitly urged the newly elected president to “f— off.”

“Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years,” Vistisen said during a European Parliament meeting on Jan. 21 in Strasbourg, France. “It’s an integrated part of our country. It is not for sale.”

Høyem said if Greenland decided to become independent, “they would immediately be targeted by major global powers.” Until then, Høyem said the territory needs more U.S. military investment to help defend it.

“I personally can’t imagine Greenland becoming fully independent,” Høyem said. “Running a country that large with so few people is nearly impossible.”

Regardless of the future of Trump’s Greenland proposal, Høyem said the land holds significant power.

“Trump might have looked at Greenland as a real estate deal, but for Denmark and Greenland, it’s a matter of geopolitical survival,” Høyem said. “The Arctic is extremely important, and I agree with Trump on that.”

In a recent interview, former Danish minister for Greenland, Aleqa Hammond, shared her thoughts on President Trump’s recent interest in acquiring the autonomous territory from Denmark. Hammond, who served as minister from 2013 to 2014, expressed concerns about the potential implications of such a move.

Hammond highlighted the strategic importance of Greenland, particularly in terms of its vast natural resources and its role in global politics. She warned that a US takeover of the island could have significant geopolitical consequences, potentially destabilizing the region and sparking tensions with other countries.

Furthermore, Hammond criticized Trump’s approach to diplomacy, noting that his brash and confrontational style could alienate the Greenlandic people and strain relations with Denmark. She stressed the need for a more collaborative and respectful approach to negotiations, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and mutual understanding.

Overall, Hammond’s insights shed light on the complexities of the situation and underscore the need for careful consideration and diplomacy in dealing with such sensitive matters. As the debate over Greenland’s future continues to unfold, her perspective serves as a valuable contribution to the ongoing discussion.
