White Sox acquire left-hander Tyler Gilbert from Phillies

The White Sox acquired left-hander Tyler Gilbert from the Phillies Wednesday in exchange for minor-league righty Aaron Combs. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Braden Shewmake was designated for assignment.

Gilbert, 31, spent most of 2024 with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, going 4-0 with a 2.25 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 31 relief appearances covering 40 innings. He pitched in six games with the Phillies, allowing three runs in 8 1/3 innings.

Gilbert owns a 4.23 ERA in 13 starts and 21 relief appearances over parts of four seasons with the Diamondbacks (2021-23) and Phillies (2024). The Phillies drafted him in the sixth round from USC in 2015.

Combs, 23, made six appearances at Low-A Kannapolis in 2024, allowing no earned runs in 7 2/3 innings.

Shewmake, 27, appeared in 29 games with the Sox in 2024, batting .125 with one home run. He was acquired from Atlanta on November 18, 2023 as part of a six-player deal and made the Sox’ Opening Day roster.

The Sox’ 40-man roster is at 40.

The Chicago White Sox have bolstered their pitching staff by acquiring left-hander Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies. Gilbert, who made headlines earlier this season by throwing a no-hitter in his first career start, will provide the White Sox with a reliable option out of the bullpen.

Gilbert, 27, has shown great potential in his short time in the majors and will bring a much-needed left-handed arm to the White Sox pitching staff. With the team currently sitting atop the AL Central standings, this move could prove to be crucial in their push for a deep postseason run.

White Sox fans can look forward to seeing Gilbert take the mound in the coming weeks, as he looks to contribute to the team’s success down the stretch. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting acquisition! #WhiteSox #TylerGilbert #MLBTradeDeadline

White Sox acquire pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Phillies

The White Sox are beginning the new year with a trade, acquiring left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Phillies in exchange for minor-league right-hander Aaron Combs. To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Braden Shewmake has been designated for assignment.

Gilbert, 31, started 2024 in the Reds’ system before getting traded to the Phillies on May 7. He then made 27 appearances for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he posted a 2.06 ERA with 48 strikeouts and seven saves over 35 innings of work. His newfound success working exclusively as a reliever led to the Phillies selecting his contract on August 17. In six major league appearances, he owned a 3.24 ERA with four strikeouts across 8.1 innings pitched. He was recently designated for assignment following the acquisition of southpaw Jesús Luzardo on December 22.

Originally drafted by the Phillies in the sixth round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Gilbert spent five seasons in the organization where he made appearances as both a starter and reliever. He worked his way up to Triple-A in 2019 before he was traded the first time to the Dodgers before 2020. After COVID wiped out Gilbert’s chances of suiting up for Los Angeles, he was picked up by the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 Draft that offseason. He went on to post a 4.32 ERA across 91.2 major league innings for Arizona from 2021-23, which was highlighted by a no-hitter in his first big league start on August 14, 2021.

It’s unclear of the White Sox’s intentions for Gilbert heading into the new season. The lefty gives the team some options as he could potentially shift back to a starter role and compete for one of the spots in the rotation. Otherwise, the team will utilize him out of the bullpen where he’ll look to carry over his recent success.

Heading back to Philly is Combs, who the White Sox selected in the eighth round of the 2024 MLB Draft. The righty made six appearances for Low-A Kannapolis during the second half of the season, compiling a 2.35 ERA with 13 strikeouts and four walks in 7.2 innings of work.

The Chicago White Sox have made a significant move to bolster their pitching staff, acquiring left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Philadelphia Phillies. Gilbert, who made history earlier this season by throwing a no-hitter in his first career start, brings a wealth of talent and potential to the White Sox rotation.

With a 3.49 ERA and 38 strikeouts in 38.2 innings pitched this season, Gilbert has shown that he has the ability to compete at the major league level. The White Sox hope that he can continue to develop and be a key contributor to their playoff push.

Fans are excited to see what Gilbert can bring to the team and how he will fit in with the talented pitching staff already in place. With the White Sox currently leading the AL Central, this acquisition could be the missing piece that propels them to a deep postseason run.

Stay tuned for more updates on Tyler Gilbert’s debut with the White Sox and how he will impact the team’s quest for a championship. #WhiteSox #TylerGilbert #MLBTradeDeadline

  • White Sox Acquire Tyler Gilbert

    White Sox Acquire Tyler Gilbert

The White Sox have acquired left-hander Tyler Gilbert from the Phillies, per an announcement from Philadelphia. Chicago sent right-hander Aaron Combs back to the Phillies in exchange for Gilbert’s services. Gilbert had been designated for assignment by the Phillies prior to the holidays. The White Sox designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment to make room for Gilbert on their 40-man roster.

Gilbert, 31, pitched just 8 1/3 innings for the Phillies this year after signing a minor league deal with the Reds last winter and being traded to Philadelphia back in May. A sixth-round pick by the Phillies back in 2015, he was surrendered to Arizona in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft and made his big league debut as a Diamondback during the 2021 season. The lefty had a rather impressive rookie season, as he posted a 3.15 ERA (135 ERA+) with a 4.27 FIP in 40 innings of work for the Snakes spread between six starts and three relief appearances. The highlight of his rookie campaign (and of his career to this point) was a no-hitter in his first career MLB start, where he struck out five Padres while walking three over his nine hitless innings of work.

Unfortunately, Gilbert’s next two seasons in the desert didn’t go quite as well. He struggled to a 5.23 ERA with a 5.10 FIP in 51 2/3 innings of work between 2022 and ’23, with a paltry 17.9% strikeout rate and a penchant for allowing home runs being the main culprits of the lefty’s difficulties. Those difficulties led to Gilbert being outrighted off the club’s roster following the 2023 season, which led to him electing free agency and signing that aforementioned minor league deal in Cincinnati. After rejoining the Phillies, Gilbert posted a solid enough 3.24 ERA in 8 1/3 innings of work at the big league level and paired that with an excellent run of outings at Triple-A, where he pitched to a 2.25 ERA in 40 frames across 31 appearances for the club’s LeHigh Valley affiliate. Impressive as those minor league numbers were, however, Gilbert found himself squeezed off the club’s 40-man roster just before the holidays due to the Jesús Luzardo trade.

Now that he’s in Chicago, Gilbert could find himself in the mix for starts at the big league level in what figures to be a fairly wide-open competition for starts on the south side. Jonathan Cannon, Bryse Wilson, and Drew Thorpe all seem likely to be part of the club’s Opening Day rotation if healthy, but beyond that trio a number of possible options exist including Davis Martin, Sean Burke, Jake Eder, Ky Bush, and Nick Nastrini. If Gilbert doesn’t make the club’s rotation, it’s to imagine him providing left-handed relief depth alongside Jared Shuster and Cam Booser for the club this year.

In return for Gilbert’s services, the Phillies add a right-handed minor leaguer in Combs. The White Sox’ eighth rounder in the 2024 draft, Combs has just 7 2/3 innings of work at the minor league level under his belt but struck out an impressive 39.4% of opponents at the Single-A level in his pro debut down the stretch last year. Prior to being drafted, Combs posted a 3.24 ERA in 66 2/3 innings of work pitching in the SEC. The youngster just turned 23 last week and is hardly a sure bet to influence the club in 2025, but the impressive stuff he flashed last season could carry him through the minors fairly quickly.

    More to come…

The Chicago White Sox have made a trade deadline move to bolster their pitching staff, acquiring left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Gilbert, who threw a no-hitter earlier this season, adds depth to the White Sox rotation as they make a push for the playoffs. Welcome to Chicago, Tyler Gilbert! #WhiteSox #MLBTradeDeadline

  • Avalanche Acquire Juuso Pärssinen From Predators

Avalanche Acquire Juuso Pärssinen From Predators

The Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators are making yet another trade, with forward Juuso Pärssinen and a 2026 seventh-round pick headed to the Avalanche in exchange for forward Ondrej Pavel and a 2027 third-round pick.

The Predators have been shopping Pärssinen around throughout much of the month, with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reporting teams were interested in the forward two weeks ago. In the end, Nashville finds a typical suitor in Colorado. The two sides have already made one trade this season, swapping veteran backup Scott Wedgewood for young up-and-comer Justus Annunen and a draft pick in late-November. That move was one of four trades that Nashville has made this year, and one of three Avalanche trades. Both goalies have been fantastic in their new settings, with Wedgewood posting a 4-2-0 record and .932 save percentage in six games, and Annunen posting a 2-1-0 record and .941 in four games.

The two sides will now hope for similar profits from this deal. In Parssinen, Colorado receives the clear upper-hand, reeling in a six-foot-three, 212-pound 23-year-old with the ability to play either center or wing. Parssinen, originally a seventh-round pick in 2019, turned pro with the Predators in the 2022-23 season. He started the year in the minors, but earned a quick call-up after scoring nine points in his first 10 AHL games. Unfortunately, Parssinen couldn’t stay too hot at the pro level, though he did still manage an encouraging 25 points in 45 games as an NHL rookie. He made the Predators’ roster out of training camp last season, but managed just 12 points in 43 games before being reassigned to the minor leagues. Parssinen managed an additional 25 points in 36 games with the Milwaukee Admirals, setting him up to return to the NHL this year – but he still can’t seem to find his footing at the top flight. As it stands, he has just five points in 15 games this season – while serving in a true fourth-line role.

Parssinen still seems to have plenty of untapped potential, and middle-six upside. While Colorado mines that vein, Nashville clears up additional space on the NHL roster by acquiring career minor-leaguer Ondrej Pavel. Pavel also turned pro in 2022-23, joining the AHL’s Colorado Eagles for two games, and no scoring, after the end of Minnesota State’s season. He more formally played his rookie AHL season last year, recording 10 points and 37 penalty minutes in 61 games. Pavel also received the first two NHL games of his career last year, though one minor penalty and a -1 stand as his only stat changes. He’s continued to post menial scoring this year, with just two points in 14 AHL games on the season, and should head for a clear role down Nashville’s depth chart. That could open up space for the team to award more ice time to Fedor Svechkov, Reid Schaefer, or Joakim Kemell – three top prospects who have each performed admirably in the AHL. Predators general manager Barry Trotz said previously that, should the roster continue sliding, he’d like to prioritize getting top prospects NHL action – a statement vindicated by this move, and the team’s 4-5-1 record in their last 10 games.

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired forward Juuso Pärssinen from the Nashville Predators in a trade deal. Pärssinen, a 20-year-old Finnish forward, was drafted by the Predators in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft.

The Avalanche are hoping that Pärssinen will add depth to their forward lines and bring his skill and speed to the team. Pärssinen has shown promise in the Finnish Liiga, where he has played for TPS Turku and HPK.

With the Avalanche currently sitting near the top of the standings in the NHL, this acquisition could provide them with the extra boost they need to make a deep playoff run. Fans will be eager to see how Pärssinen fits into the team and contributes to their success on the ice.

(Dec. 28, 2024) – Nashville Predators General Manager Barry Trotz announced today that the team has acquired forward Ondrej Pavel (AWN-dray PAH-vehl) and a third-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Juuso Parssinen and the New York Rangers’ seventh-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

The addition of Pavel gives the Predators more depth on defense and solidifies their back end heading into the upcoming season. With his combination of size, skill, and defensive ability, Pavel is sure to become a key player for Nashville as they look to make a deep playoff run.

  • Avalanche Acquire Parssinen From Nashville

    Avalanche Acquire Parssinen From Nashville

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today the team has acquired forward Juuso Parssinen and a seventh-round pick (previously acquired from the New York Rangers) in the 2026 NHL Draft from the Nashville Predators in exchange for forward Ondrej Pavel and Colorado’s third-round pick in the 2027 Draft.

Parssinen, 23, has suited up in 15 games for the Predators in 2024-25 and registered five points (2g/3a). Four of those five points came over a four-game point streak from Nov. 6-11 while also scoring in back-to-back games to begin that span. The forward also played in his 100th career NHL game on Nov. 17 in Vancouver.

A native of Hameenlinna, Finland, Parssinen has registered 42 career points (16g/26a) in 104 NHL games from 2022-25, all with the Predators. His 2022-23 saw him post season-highs in games (45), assists (19), points (25) and game-winning tallies (3), while last season he registered eight goals to set a personal-best. Parssinen also suited up in Game 6 of the First Round in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, his lone NHL postseason appearance.

Additional professional experience for Parssinen includes 46 AHL games with the Milwaukee Admirals over parts of the 2021-24 seasons as well as four Liiga campaigns for TPS from 2018-22, competing in 134 regular-season contests. The 6-foot-3, 212-pound forward has registered 34 career AHL points (9g/25a) and suited up in 14 Calder Cup Playoff tilts last season, chipping in nine points (1g/8a) to rank tied for second on the club in assists.

On an international level, Parssinen captured bronze at the IIHF World Junior Championship with Finland in 2021. He was originally selected by the Predators in the seventh round (210th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Pavel signed with Colorado as a college free agent on March 30, 2023 and appeared in two NHL games for the Avalanche (Nov. 7, 2023 and March 6, 2024). He suited up in 77 games for the Colorado Eagles (AHL) over parts of the 2022-25 seasons and tallied 12 points (6g/6a).

The Avalanche have made a big move, acquiring forward Eeli Parssinen from the Nashville Predators. This trade adds depth to Colorado’s roster and brings in a talented young player with a lot of potential.

Parssinen, a 20-year-old from Finland, was drafted by the Predators in the third round of the 2019 NHL Draft. He has shown promise in his development and has the skills to make an impact at the NHL level.

The Avalanche are hoping that Parssinen can help bolster their forward group and contribute to their success this season. With his speed, skill, and offensive abilities, he could be a valuable addition to the team.

Fans are excited to see what Parssinen can bring to the Avalanche and are hopeful that this trade will help strengthen the team’s chances of making a deep playoff run. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
