  • New Valorant patch adds League of Legends’ best feature to ranked

Playing any game at a competitive level isn’t easy – take it from someone who’s currently grinding her way through the League of Legends ranks. Sometimes, you’ll pop off and play like an absolute demon, but you’ll still lose due to better scaling, miracle-style enemy comebacks, or – of course – your teammates being trash. What begins as an epic climb can quickly become a streak of losses, but in League of Legends you’re safeguarded from immediate demotion by buffer games where you don’t actually lose any points. It’s a system I’m sure a lot of us are thankful for, and Riot’s now adding it to Valorant with patch 10.1.

The LoL ranking system works like this: demotion occurs when you’re in the bottom tier of your rank with 0LP. If you’re sitting in Platinum IV, for example, but have lost a series of games and now have 0LP, you will be demoted to Gold I. Riot does, however, offer tier-loss prevention, meaning that you can play a few games at 0LP and stop yourself from being demoted if you start to win again.

This isn’t a system we’ve seen in Valorant, which instantly demotes you if your RR reaches zero – brutal, sure, but it certainly encourages ‘one more game.’ With the FPS game‘s latest patch, though, Valorant’s ranked experience will be more in line with League’s, but with a much cooler name.

    YouTube Thumbnail

Out with ‘tier-loss prevention,’ in with Ranked Shields, Valorant’s equivalent of those aforementioned buffer games. Available in all ranks except Radiant (similar to LoL’s Apex ranks), they’ll trigger when you’re in the bottom division (and only the bottom division) of your ranked tier and sitting at 0RR. There’s a catch, though: there’s only two of them.

If you lose a game, you’ll shatter a Ranked Shield, leaving you with one remaining. Another loss will break that final shield, and if the series of unfortunate events continues, you’ll demote. TLDR: you have three games to get it together, or you’ll drop a rank.

It’s worth clarifying that regaining 5RR won’t reset the Shield; when you’ve used up that tier’s Shields, they’re gone. When you get back up to tier one, you’ll replenish your store, and if you’re demoted to the first division in a different rank, your Shields will reset.

An infographic showing the new Valorant ranked shield system.

Personally I love the tier-loss prevention system. It forces you to play that little bit harder to stop you from demoting, and gives you a bit of a safety net if things go wrong. There’s nothing more crushing than grinding your heart out, only to be sent straight back to zero after a few dud games.

Valorant patch 10.1 goes live today, Tuesday January 21, so why not give ranked a try?

Riot Games has just released a new patch for Valorant, and it’s bringing one of League of Legends’ best features to the game’s ranked mode. The latest update introduces a new ranking system that is similar to the one used in League of Legends, where players will be able to see their progress through different tiers and divisions.

This new feature will give players a clearer understanding of their skill level and progression in Valorant’s competitive mode. It will also make it easier for players to track their improvement and set goals for themselves as they climb the ranks.

The addition of this new ranking system is sure to add a new level of competitiveness and excitement to Valorant’s ranked mode. Players can now strive to reach higher tiers and prove themselves as the best of the best in the game.

Overall, this new patch is a welcome addition to Valorant and shows that Riot Games is dedicated to improving the game and listening to player feedback. We can’t wait to see how this new ranking system will impact the game’s competitive scene.

  • ‘FBI’ Adds Emily Alabi To Season 7 Cast As Potential Partner For Scola

EXCLUSIVE: Scola may have found his new partner. Emily Alabi (S.W.A.T., Joe Pickett) has been cast in FBI as a recurring on CBS procedural’s current seventh season, sources close to production tell Deadline.

Alabi will portray a new agent and is expected to be paired with Stuart Scola (John Boyd), whose longtime partner Tiffany Wallace (Katherine Renee Kane) left in early October. Although Alabi joins in a recurring role, we understand there’s potential for her to become a series regular in Season 8.

Lisette Olivera was originally cast to succeed Kane in the new Season 7 series regular role of Syd Ortiz, a trained Behavioral Analysis Unit Agent who joined the FBI’s New York field office criminal division and partner to Scola. Olivera departed the show after a handful of episodes. As we reported at the time, this was not a reflection of her work but a creative decision stemming from the character playing too young.

FBI is produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with CBS Studios. Executive producers include Dick Wolf, Mike Weiss, Alex Chapple, Amanda Slater and Peter Jankowski.

Alabi is best known for her recurring roles on TV shows such as S.W.A.T., Joe Pickett and Magnum P.I. She started her career as a professional dancer and choreographer on popular TV shows and movies including Chef directed by Jon Favreau, Netflix’s Selena: The Series and the Oscars. Alabi is represented by Ro Diamond at SDB Partners & manager Michelle Zeitlin, More Zap Productions and Management.

Exciting news for fans of the hit crime drama series “FBI”! The show has just announced that actress Emily Alabi will be joining the cast for its upcoming seventh season. Alabi will be playing a potential partner for Special Agent Omar Adom “OA” Zidan, portrayed by Zeeko Zaki.

Alabi’s character, yet to be named, is set to shake things up in the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. With her sharp wit, quick thinking, and impressive investigative skills, she is sure to be a valuable asset to the team.

Fans can look forward to seeing the dynamic between Alabi’s character and Agent Tiffany Scola, played by Katherine Renee Turner, as they work together to solve complex cases and bring criminals to justice.

Stay tuned for more updates on the highly-anticipated seventh season of “FBI” and get ready to see Emily Alabi in action alongside the talented cast! #FBICBS #EmilyAlabi #Season7 #FBIpartner

  • Tanner Scott to sign with Dodgers: Los Angeles superteam adds elite reliever on $72 million deal, per report

    scott-getty.png
    Getty Images

High-leverage reliever Tanner Scott has agreed to terms with the Dodgers on a four-year, $72 million free-agent contract, reports MLB.com.

This past season, the right-hander Scott boasted a 1.75 ERA in 72 combined innings for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, who acquired him leading up to the trade deadline. Over that span, Scott struck out 84 batters and issued 32 unintentional walks. He also picked up 22 saves and notched his first All-Star selection. Scott isn’t far removed from a 2023 season that saw him top 100 strikeouts – a quite meaningful feat for a contemporary reliever. Scott this past season averaged 97 mph with his fastball, which put him in the 91st percentile among major-league hurlers.

Earlier in the offseason, CBS Sports ranked Scott as the No. 27 available free agent in the current class. Here’s part of our write-up:

Scott’s last two seasons have been something to behold. In 150 innings, he’s notched a 2.04 ERA and has struck out more than 31% of the batters he’s faced. Not bad for someone who came into his age-28 season equipped with a 4.61 ERA. Scott has two big-time offerings: a 97 mph rising heater and a devastating slider that generated nearly 40% whiffs in 2024. He has battled his command throughout his career, but otherwise he’s a compelling candidate to be known as the best and nastiest anonymous reliever in the game.

For his career, the 30-year-old Scott has an ERA+ of 125. Over the last two seasons, however, that ERA+ figure is 224. The Dodgers are no doubt hoping that the more recent, upgraded version of Scott prevails moving forward.

According to recent reports, elite reliever Tanner Scott is set to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers in a blockbuster $72 million deal. This move is expected to bolster the Dodgers’ already impressive bullpen and solidify their status as a superteam in the MLB.

Scott, known for his electric stuff and dominant performances on the mound, will provide the Dodgers with another weapon to use in high-leverage situations. His addition to the team is sure to strike fear into the hearts of opposing hitters and give the Dodgers a significant advantage as they look to make another deep playoff run.

With the addition of Scott, the Dodgers’ pitching staff is shaping up to be one of the best in the league, with a mix of veteran experience and young talent. Fans can expect to see Scott playing a key role in the team’s quest for another World Series title.

Overall, this signing is a huge win for the Dodgers and their fans, as they continue to build a powerhouse team that is poised for success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates as the deal is finalized and Scott officially joins the Dodgers’ roster.
