Marvel Rivals players have issued advice for those struggling to climb the ranked ladder, and while it may sound like common sense to some, it’s an important tip to note.
Ranked in Marvel Rivalscan be a hell of a grind, particularly following the seven-tier drop at the start of season one, and a bad streak can quickly derail your climb—but taking on one piece of advice from the community may help.
In a post on Reddit, players were advised not to select a character they have no experience with simply because a teammate asked for them to activate a team-up ability–and this single piece of advice could help you in a slump.
It’s no secret that there are top-tier team-ups to utilize, including the trio of Doctor Strange, the Hulk, and Iron Man, but choosing a character you have little to no experience with is not the way to go about it. Instead, stick with someone you know.
Although the right team-up can be a game-changer, sticking with a hero you know and playing them well is always better than choosing a character you are not comfortable with and having a mid game—so don’t give into peer pressure. As someone said, team-ups aren’t worth handicapping your team.
The post attracted over 3,000 upvotes and over 450 comments, full of good tips. While playing someone you don’t know in ranked isn’t ideal, it’s a good idea to be familiar with a few characters so that you can switch when required—but you should do this in Quick Play.
It’s also worth learning different roles and characters, enabling you to switch to Vanguard from Support, for example, if the team composition calls for it. Again, though, don’t do this in ranked mode.
I’d also highly recommend learning a character in the vs. AI mode. While it won’t challenge your skills too much, it will allow you to learn the abilities and cooldowns in an environment that isn’t anywhere near as stressful.
I’ll also throw another tip into the mix: don’t pick a character just because you’ve seen someone else play them well. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, so yours may be vastly different from whoever you saw shine.
Finally, another tip is not to play ranked while tilted. Take a break if you’re getting frustrated and on a loss streak! Nothing good ever comes out of playing full of rage, and it can do significant damage to your placement.

Not long after Ohio State beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl to end the 2024 season for the Longhorns, Texas QB Arch Manning was already thinking ahead to 2025. Manning played mostly in a reserve role for Texas the past two seasons. But he will finally get his chance to shine this upcoming year.
“Kind of right after the Ohio State game I was with Quinn in the locker room,” Manning recalled. “He was just like, ‘Enjoy every moment. It goes by quickly. So love on your teammates and have fun.’”
That is obviously excellent advice from Ewers, who is off to the NFL after leading the Longhorns to the semifinals of the College Football Playoff in 2024. Ewers spent three seasons at Texas after starting his career at Ohio State as a decorated recruit. He knows all too well how quickly time goes by while playing college football.
In addition to Ewers, Manning also received advice from Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian about what to do now that he is the leader of the Texas team.
“Coach Sark just told me to be myself and be a leader and work hard and it’ll all work out,” Arch Manning said.
Manning started two games for the Longhorns this past season while Quinn Ewers was injured, leading Texas past ULM and Mississippi State. He also saw limited playing time in several other games.
For the year, Manning finished with 939 passing yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 67.8 percent of his passes. Manning also rushed for 108 yards and four scores. He is looking forward to his opportunity to finally be the full-time starter for the Longhorns.
“I think my first start against ULM I kind of forced some shots down field and was a little bit greedy,” Arch Manning said. “But then the next week against Mississippi State settled in. The hardest part was you get a little taste of what it’s like and you love it. And then you go back to not playing. That was pretty tough.
“I haven’t really played much, so I guess it hasn’t really started. But it’s been fun. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve learned a lot. I love my coaches, love my teammates. So I’m ready to get it rolling.”

Some federal workers are considering taking the “deferred resignation” offer because they are near the retirement age. One financial planner shares some tips.
From an offer of “deferred resignations” to promises of cuts to the federal workforce, many of the moves taken and proposed by the Trump administration have left some federal workers feeling uneasy.
Thiago Glieger, of RMG Advisors in Rockville, Maryland, specializes in financial planning for federal employees and said he is currently receiving a lot of questions about the “deferred resignation” offer, some of which come from workers who may be considering it because they are at or close to retirement age.
The top question he asked is about whether taking it would impact a worker’s retirement benefit.
“I just want to bust that myth that your benefits are not going to be stripped away from you,” Glieger said.
Now those considering the offer need to make sure they are truly eligible for retirement by the time the resignation kicks in on Sept. 30, otherwise he said that could result in pension reductions among other concerns.
“I think that’s a really important decision and detail to be aware of, if somebody is leaving too soon,” Glieger said.
The next thing to consider is are you truly in a position to retire?
“Do you have a formal retirement plan that’s going to account for all of the little moving pieces so that when you’re not earning an income anymore, you still get to maintain the lifestyle that you’ve grown used to,” Glieger said.
Glieger also urges people close to retiring to have emergency funds, that will cover expenses for three to six months for people in two-income households, and about a year for people in one-income households.
For those looking to take the deal but planning on continuing to work, he recommends having emergency cash that will cover you for six months in a single-income household and three to four months for dual-income households.
Glieger does recommend that federal workers also check with an employment attorney too, before signing the deal because there may be rights that come with the job that is signed away by accepting the deal.
“It’s best that they talk to counsel about their specific circumstance and what it could mean to them in the long term,” Glieger said.
What about those staying?
Glieger said many of his clients are “wary” of the offer and plan to stay but are concerned about a possible workforce reduction that could come.
“They’re very scared,” Glieger said.
He said the first step for federal workers worried about the future is to look at their financial plans and increase their cash position.
“That emergency fund is really your lifeline to be able to bridge something crazy, like losing a job until you can figure out where you’re going to land on your feet next,” Glieger said.
He said while it will be tough, he recommends those without emergency funds to “really cut down on expenses” with a goal of saving enough cash to get them through a few months without work.
Glieger also recommends that concerned federal workers “err on the side of caution” and be more conservative with their money. He said for the federal workers, that could mean putting some extra money into the Thrift Savings Plan — G Fund.
“The G Fund is a very safe and protected, it’s guaranteed to not lose principle and value, and so that is a good investment for somebody that is a little bit worried, because if you’re wrong, you still got a little bit of interest … you didn’t lose your funds,” Glieger said.

I think he’s having a great year.
I think just the more he plays, more comfortable he gets, more confidence he gets, and it looks like he’s having a lot of fun and playing good hockey.
He’s going to be a big part of their team from now on. He’s looking like he’s everything everyone anticipated he’d be.
Crosby, on a one-on-one battle that Macklin Celebrini remembered when they played each other in November:
I mean, there’s different reasons or different things that as a young guy you remember, and I guess he values the one-on-one battles and winning those and knows the importance of it.
I think it’s different for everybody, but you can tell that he’s committed to play both sides of the puck, and he cares a lot about being a two-way player, and his skill and everything speaks for itself, but for a young player to be interested in playing on the other side of the puck and want to get better there, that’s something I think any team loves to see.
Crosby, on if he had a moment like that in his career:
I think there’s a lot. I mean, I think my first shift, I had a chance right in the slot, had a chance to score on my first shot, and my first shift, and Martin Brodeur stopped me, and that was my “Welcome to the League” moment. I don’t usually like missing those, but I remember in that moment, I was still pretty happy to be where I was at, being in the NHL, playing against guys that I had grown up watching.

So deserving for guys that you know did so much for this organization, for the fan base, how consistent they were, what they meant to the franchise. Yeah, I think that’s a perfect way to honor them. And you know, from playing against them and playing with them, they’re just great guys to be around. They love the game.
Crosby, on being on the ice with Celebrini when he met him in the summer of 2023:
I had met him before [at a camp], so just seeing how he was doing, being able to relate to just all the attention, all the demands, all the things that come with being in his position.
It happens pretty quick, and it’s always a busy time leading up to your first year with a lot of expectations. So I was just more interested to see how he was doing with all that than talking hockey.
Yeah, we skated together.
Just really dynamic, sees the ice well, great shot. I think he just does everything really well.
You look at different guys, maybe their speed sticks out or their shot or their playmaking. I think he’s just really solid in every one of those areas.
Just from watching briefly, I think he’s a guy that really takes a lot of pride in being a two-way guy, too. So he cares about doing good defensively. And I’m sure his coaches like that, like to see that. That always takes a little bit more time, but you can tell he’s really conscious of that.
Crosby’s advice to Celebrini, both teenage No. 1 picks on struggling teams in their rookie season:
I think just enjoy it. I mean, nobody likes losing, no matter if you’re in your first year, your 20th year. The reason he plays is to win games, and that’s what it’s about.
But I think for him, just understanding that process.
He’s a competitive guy. He wants to win every night. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s how you have to be.
But you just gotta enjoy it, though it’s your first year, and a lot of new things, a lot of great memories from this year.

Greg Bolin returned to his home in Paradise, Calif., to find his wife in tears. She had been watching news coverage of the firestorms in Los Angeles.
“It’s just exactly — these people, they’re lost. They don’t know where to go,” Bolin recalled her saying.
The memories all rushed back.
The couple had barely escaped the devastating 2018 Camp fire that killed 85 — while they were stuck trying to flee on gridlocked roads, propane tanks exploded on nearby properties and ash rained from the sky.

Bolin, the vice mayor of the town at the time, spent the night at a friend’s place alongside five other displaced families. Like most in Paradise, his home was decimated.
Paradise still has not fully recovered, but many wildfire safety advocates have praised the town’s response to the fire. In an interview with The Times, Bolin — who runs a construction business and served as mayor for two years after the fire — shared the lessons he learned from Paradise’s recovery and offered advice for Angelenos.
Building safer, better neighborhoods
After the fire abated, Paradise’s town council adopted an ambitious and extensive long-term recovery plan that has become the town’s guiding light for the last half decade.
The recovery plan called for a “one-stop-shop” housing and permitting center in town, and instructed the town to apply for financial support for homeowners’ rebuilding projects.
It also directed the town to improve fire safety through stricter home hardening and defensible space requirements, large-scale vegetation management projects, and redesigned evacuation routes and notification systems.
As talk about significant fire safety updates remain taboo in L.A., Bolin views the tough conversations around how to rebuild differently nonnegotiable.
“It’s not an option,” he said. “This has to happen. If this doesn’t happen, we’re not coming back.”

The town has since worked to eliminate dead-end roads, build new evacuation routes and expand existing ones. Paradise has also worked to bolster its emergency notification system, adding phone and radio alerts and 21 siren towers that can be heard anywhere in town.
Not everyone in Paradise is happy. Some residents whose homes burned down still live in temporary housing on properties they own but can’t afford to rebuild on until they receive settlement money for the fire. They have criticized the town for pushing them to essentially either start building or leave.
Bolin told The Times in 2023 that these critiques were unfounded, and that Paradise was doing everything it can to help lower-income residents.
“I’d like to make some rosy statement that there’s some trick to it,” he said, “but there’s not. It’s just a lot of work.”
“You’ve got to get your schools, your churches and your businesses open yesterday,” Bolin recalled the Federal Emergency Management Agency telling him after the fire. “If you don’t, people will have nothing to do, and kids will have nothing to rally around.”
After the fire, Paradise’s churches jumped in to help with fire relief, and the town made a point to bring back its annual town parade as quickly as possible, Bolin said. Paradise also rebuilt virtually all of its schools and used the opportunity to significantly upgrade the facilities. As a result, the former mayor said, a disproportionate number of the residents who returned were those with children.
“You know, I appreciate [FEMA] saying it, because it did make a big difference,” he said. “That was huge, to build community,”
L.A. lost dozens of beloved restaurants, schools and keystone religious institutions in the Palisades and Eaton fires.

Longtime Pacific Coast Highway resident Cami Colbert, processing the loss of the roadway’s iconic Reel Inn and Wylie’s bait shop, said the neighborhood felt lonely. In Altadena, the Rev. Carri Patterson Grindon was left devastated by the loss of her church. But amid all the ruins, the preschool still stood.
“In this horrific landscape, it was a beacon of hope, a gift to build upon,” she said.
For Bolin, part of the process was accepting that Paradise would never look the same, and that the trauma from the fire means some life-long locals won’t return.
“There’s people that still won’t even drive up the hill because of the PTSD,” he said. “They can’t even look at this place because it’s nothing like it was before.”
FEMA told Bolin after the fire that at least a third of the town would likely leave, and at least another third would likely stay. “Then there’s that middle 33%,” Bolin said. “That’s who you’re fighting for.”
Turning pain into progress
Those who stayed were eager to talk about solutions and get to work. Town council meetings were so well attended that the council moved them into a nearby church that could hold about 2,200 people. Each meeting was packed.
“Those weren’t fun,” Bolin said. “It was vicious…. But it was all part of the healing process.”
Bolin cautioned that, at some point, the finger-pointing has to evolve into constructive brainstorming if a community wants to make progress.

He referenced L.A.’s water pressure as an example. Two things can be true, he said: Officials and leaders weren’t adequately ready, and there isn’t a water system in the world that could control those fires.
“At first, you’re angry and you’re mad at everybody and so you’re just losing it,” he said. “The politics of it all … it was very, very frustrating and very hard for me to watch. But eventually, we got our feet underneath us.”
As emotions settled, the town council brought on an urban planning firm to develop a tangible recovery plan. Then, they began asking residents: What would it take for you to move back and feel safe?
The town came up with dozens of suggestions that, bundled together, became the foundation of Paradise’s long-term recovery plan.
Hope for Angelenos’ future
Residents of Paradise now have fundamentally more fire-conscious lives.
Evacuation zone numbers are clearly marked along all major roadways, making it nearly impossible to not know which zone you’re in. The town’s cozy, shaded forest atmosphere has opened up to reveal sweeping views of canyons and mountains. Locals face stronger home-hardening requirements and hefty fines for failing to clear the brush from their yards.

For Bolin, it’s part of the deal when you live in a fire-prone community close to — or fully immersed in — California’s wildlands. His advice to Angelenos is to accept that reality.
“You guys have no choice,” he said. “If you don’t change those things and do that differently … you’re just setting yourself up for another one.”
Even with Paradise’s recovery progress, Bolin is still conscious of the threat future fire poses. “We’re still in the experimental stages. We’re only six years out,” he said. But “the fire cycle is typically 10 years.”
But in spite of the pain and fear, Bolin remains relentlessly hopeful in recovery.
“There is a path back. It’s going to take time. You’re going to have to be patient,” he said. But “many people here have said, ‘How many times do you get to be a part of bringing back a community?’ ”
“I wouldn’t miss that for the world,” he said.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ future remains unclear months after her election loss to now-President Donald Trump.
As she grapples with navigating next steps, Harris has spoken with family and close friends, including the one other person who has been in her exact position: Hillary Clinton, New York Magazine reported. The two have reportedly spoken several times since Harris’ defeat.
Some have speculated that she will stage a gubernatorial run next year in California, as her close friend, Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom, is limited on terms and can’t run again. Others think she still has her eye on the Oval Office and will launch another bid for the presidency. The former vice president has not spoken directly about her future, but she has hinted that she’s not done with politics. Last week, just days before the end of her time as then-President Joe Biden’s VP, Harris addressed a room of staff as she participated in the decades-long tradition of signing her desk drawer. During her brief remarks, Harris said she would not “go quietly into the night,” saying that “our work is not done.”
The comments she made to staff echoed a message from her concession speech in which she told supporters, “While I concede this election, I do not concede the fight that fueled this campaign.”
