  • Cochran trial: Closing arguments heard Tuesday afternoon, jury deliberations to take place Wednesday morning

BECKLEY, W.Va. — Jury deliberations begin Wednesday morning in the murder trial of former Raleigh County pharmacist Natalie Cochran.

    Natalie Cochran (WVRJA)

The jury heard closing arguments from the prosecution and the defense throughout the course of the afternoon Tuesday before Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick adjourned the court until 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Cochran is accused of giving a lethal dose of insulin to her husband, Michael Cochran, 38, in 2019 once he began raising questions about the Ponzi scheme she was operating through the couple’s defense contracting business.

In her closing argument, Raleigh County assistant prosecuting attorney Ashley Acord said this was a pre-meditated murder.

“This woman, Natalie Cochran, feloniously, willfully, maliciously, deliberately, and with pre-meditation killed her husband, Michael Cochran,” Acord said.

The state rested its case last Wednesday after bringing in Forensic Pathologist Dr. Paul Uribe, who concluded, after conducting a second autopsy of Michael Cochran’s body, that he died from insulin.

On Monday, the defense rested after their expert witnesses, Forensic Pathologists Ljubisa Dragovic and Dr. Prya Banerjee, said Cochran’s death was “undetermined and undeterminable.”

Defense attorney Matthew Victor said on Tuesday that the prosecution does not have the appropriate amount of evidence to convict.

“The state cannot answer or prove beyond reasonable doubt the ‘how, how did that happen? How did this murder happen?” Victor said.

Victor, in his closing argument Tuesday, also brought up that Michael Cochran had been taking over two dozen supplements per day, as testified by the couple’s juvenile son. Victor also brought up claims that Michael Cochran was receiving supplements from out of the country, some of which were not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

    Natalie and Michael Cochran

On Monday, Natalie Cochran turned her head in court as a photo of her husband’s body was shown after his remains were exhumed.

Victor says that this is not a murder, but rather a tragedy.

“Not for a moment should you think that the defense is taking his death lightly,” Victor said. “It’s a horrible tragedy, but a tragedy, not a murder.”

Meanwhile, Acord believes the evidence is there for the jury to convict. In her final remarks, she brought up the fact that Cochran did not aid her husband or take him to the hospital right after he had gone unconscious in February 2019.

Early in the trial, it was determined Cochran had a vial in her refrigerator months after her husband’s death, which was tested and determined to contain insulin.

“Natalie Cochran had the means, knowledge and opportunity to commit this crime,” Acord said.

The trial is being streamed on Court TV.

The highly anticipated closing arguments in the Cochran trial were heard on Tuesday afternoon, bringing an end to weeks of intense courtroom drama. The prosecution and defense both made their final appeals to the jury, laying out their theories of the case and urging the jurors to come to a just verdict.

The prosecution argued that the evidence presented throughout the trial clearly pointed to the defendant’s guilt, painting a picture of a cold-blooded killer who meticulously planned and executed the crime. They emphasized the testimony of key witnesses and the forensic evidence that linked the defendant to the scene of the crime.

On the other hand, the defense made a passionate plea for the jury to consider the possibility of reasonable doubt. They pointed to inconsistencies in the prosecution’s case and raised questions about the reliability of certain witnesses. The defense argued that the defendant was being unfairly scapegoated and that there were other potential suspects who were not adequately investigated.

Now, as the trial enters its final phase, the jury will begin deliberations on Wednesday morning to decide the fate of the defendant. The outcome of this high-profile case hangs in the balance, with the hopes and fears of both the prosecution and defense resting on the shoulders of the twelve jurors.

Stay tuned for updates as we await the verdict in the Cochran trial.

  • Terps Face Hoosiers Sunday Afternoon On CBS

    Maryland (15-5, 5-4 B1G) at Indiana (14-6, 5-4 B1G)

    January 26, 2025

    12 p.m.

    Assembly Hall

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland looks to win its third straight game on Sunday as the Terps travel to Indiana. The game will be televised on CBS (12 PM) and fans can also listen to the game on the Maryland Sports Radio Network with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday calling the action alongside Chris Knoche.

Maryland has now won two straight games, four of its last five, and has a pair of top-25 wins on its resume for the season.

The Terps are ranked No. 19 in the NCAA NET, No. 21 in the Kenpom ratings, No. 13 in the Torvik ranking, No. 13 on EvanMiya.com, and No. 21 on the ESPN Basketball Power Index.

Maryland has been explosive offensively averaging 83.6 points this year which ranks as the ninth-best average in program history and ranks No. 21 nationally.

Big Notes: Reese AND Queen Shine Against Illinois

    • The big man duo of Julian Reese (27 points, 17 rebounds – both career highs) and Derik Queen (25 points) powered the Terps past No. 17 Illinois, 91-70, on Thursday night. Maryland had a total of 62 points in the paint which were the most for any Big Ten team this season.
    • Reese and Queen became the first Maryland players to post 25+ points in a game together since Feb. 20, 2011 when Jordan Williams (26) and Terrell Stoglin (25) did it against NC State. It was the first time two Terps had done it in a true road game since Steve Francis (25) and Terence Morris (26) did so at Kentucky (Dec. 12, 1998).
    • In winning by 21 at Illinois, that was Maryland’s largest margin of victory over a ranked team on the road since beating No. 21 Wake Forest, 85-63 (+22) on Jan. 23, 2002.
    • Also the 91 points at Illinois marked Maryland’s most points on the road against a ranked team since beating No. 8 Virginia, 91-87 on Jan. 31, 2002.
    Team Pic

Maryland is averaging 83.6 points per game which is the ninth-best mark in program history.

    Ja’Kobi Showing The Range

    • Since joining the Terps, Ja’Kobi Gillespie has scored in double figures in 16 of his 20 games played.
    • Against No. 22 UCLA, Gillespie set a season-high with 27 points going 4-of-8 from deep and 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. He also had four assists and a season-high four steals in the win.
    • Against No. 15 Marquette, Gillespie had 24 points going 10-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-9 from three-point range. That total was just two shy of matching his career-high of 26 points scored against Southern Illinois (2/14/24) when he was at Belmont.
    • Gillespie leads the team with 90 total assists (4.5 per game) giving him 302 for his career. He set a new career-high with 11 in the win over Syracuse as part of his first career double-double (17 pts). The 11 assists were the most by a Maryland player in a game since Melo Trimble had 12 against North Carolina (12/2/15).
    • His 4.5 assists per game rank 6th in the B1G.
    • Gillespie now has 1,024 career points between Belmont and Maryland through 77 total career games played. He scored his 1,000th career point on a buzzer-beating three-pointer before halftime of the Nebraska (1/19) win.
    • A highly-touted football prospect while in high school, Gillespie received offers from ACC and SEC programs on the gridiron. As a wide receiver, defensive back, and special teams returner, he pulled off a touchdown trifecta with a receiving touchdown, a pick-six, and a punt return in a single-game.

    Juju Beast

    • Julian Reese entered the 2024-25 campaign as one of the top post players in the Big Ten and nationally. Last season, he earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors as a junior after being named to the Preseason All-Big Ten Team and to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List.
    • Reese posted 15 double doubles last season which were the ninth most nationally and stood second in the Big Ten during the regular season.
    • All-time, Reese has the eighth-most double-doubles for any Terp (30).
    • Reese is one of nine players in program history to post over 1,100 career points and 800 career rebounds.
    • Despite having a talented group of high-scoring guards and the addition of Derik Queen to the front court, Julian Reese has nearly matched his career-high totals from last season. Even more impressive is that Reese has been hitting these marks playing 5.4 fewer minutes per game than last year.
    • Additionally, his 3.3 offensive rebounds per game leads the Big Ten and are the most for a Maryland player since James Padgett averaged 3.3 in 2011-12.

  • Avs Ready for Afternoon Showdown with Dallas Stars

The Avalanche face off against the Dallas Stars at 2 p.m. MT in their first afternoon game of the season. The team plays another matinee against the Minnesota Wild on Monday.

The typical routine for an NHL player on game days when the start time is at least 6 p.m. begins with meetings, a morning skate, and workout. There is an afternoon nap, then a pregame meal, and back at the rink at least two hours before scheduled puck drop.

Deen’s Daily: Avalanche’s Real Test Begins; Rantanen Talks Could Pick Up Soon; Goalie Goal!

“It’s different preparation. So today you should already be thinking about it, probably a little bit more. And then when you wake up and you get set, your mind’s already going to be going to the game, so a little bit different preparation,” head coach Jared Bednar said after practice on Friday. “I don’t think the guys change their routines much when they get to the rink.”

Mackenzie Blackwood said day games are not necessarily more difficult than night games. Having a good night’s sleep before a day game is most important. Players get to the rink early and start their preparation for the game.

“You just have to make sure you get yourself woken up, get a good breakfast and good warm-up in. And I think once you get in the game, it’s the same,” Blackwood said.

The Avs need to be mentally prepared to compete against a very good Dallas Stars team. They are third in the Central Division and two points ahead of Colorado.

“They’re a deep team. They play the right way. They keep coming in waves, and they forecheck hard. They shoot pucks and tips and screens. And they got some good skill too. They’re gonna be a good test, a good opponent for us,” the 28-year-old netminder said.

Colorado suffered a tough loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night after having a 3-0 lead. It was a full practice at Family Sports on Friday and energy was high. Seems to be good preparation ahead of a 2 p.m. start on Saturday.

“I love the afternoon game. I think there’s a little excitement around an afternoon game, that you’re going to go leave it all on the ice and still be able to get out of there and get some rest without pushing through those late starts like last night, so I think our guys like it. I think you know we should come out with a real good effort tomorrow,” Bednar said.

The Avs had one of their best starts this season against the Oilers and look to duplicate that on Saturday afternoon. There wasn’t anything different in preparation other than the anticipation of facing a highly skilled team. Bednar said his team looks to improve its game management “to not make it so one-sided.”

The Avalanche coach has shifted some players around the last few games and confirmed he will start Ross Colton on the top line with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen. He had moved Rantanen to the second line the last two games so he may go back to that if the top lines struggle to produce.

The Colorado Avalanche are gearing up for an afternoon showdown with the Dallas Stars. The Avs are coming off a strong win in their last game and are looking to carry that momentum into this matchup.

With key players like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar leading the charge, the Avalanche have been a force to be reckoned with this season. They currently sit near the top of the standings in the Central Division and are determined to continue their winning ways.

The Stars, on the other hand, have been struggling as of late and will be looking to turn things around against the Avs. This game is sure to be a high-energy, back-and-forth battle between two talented teams.

So grab your jerseys and get ready to cheer on the Avalanche as they face off against the Stars in what is sure to be an exciting afternoon showdown. Let’s go Avs! #GoAvsGo #ColoradoAvalanche #NHL #Hockey #DallasStars

  • Fox News names Will Cain to replace Neil Cavuto in weekday afternoon lineup

NEW YORK (AP) — Fox News Channel is promoting weekend host Will Cain to the weekday afternoon slot vacated by longtime personality Neil Cavuto, who left the network last month.

Cain has been a host of the weekend edition of the “Fox & Friends” morning show. A lawyer, Cain had a radio show and contributed to television programming at ESPN before joining Fox in 2020. Previously, he was an analyst at CNN and host at the Blaze.

A weekday show is coveted and doesn’t often open up at Fox. His 4 p.m. Eastern show will be slotted directly in front of the political talk show “The Five,” frequently Fox’s most-watched program.

While Cavuto’s show often had a business tilt, owing to the host’s background, that won’t be the case with Cain. He hosts a weekday podcast on news and sports, which will continue, and Fox says Cain will bring some of his podcasting style to his television show, likely meaning more extended interviews.

Cain said he’ll use his background in news, law, entertainment and business “to help our viewers better understand the headlines through thought-provoking content and analysis every weekday afternoon.” His show will debut next Tuesday.

Fox contributor Charlie Hurt will replace Cain on the weekend “Fox & Friends,” starting Saturday.

Fox News has announced that Will Cain will be taking over the weekday afternoon lineup previously held by Neil Cavuto. Cain, who has been a familiar face on the network as a political commentator and host, will bring his unique perspective and insightful analysis to viewers in his new role.

Cain’s background in journalism and his experience covering political events will make him a strong addition to Fox News’ lineup. With his engaging personality and ability to break down complex issues, Cain is sure to draw in viewers and provide them with the latest news and updates.

Fans of Fox News can look forward to seeing Will Cain in his new weekday afternoon slot, where he will continue to inform and entertain audiences with his sharp commentary and thoughtful insights. Stay tuned for more updates on Cain’s debut in his new role on Fox News.

  • Men’s Basketball at Kent State Saturday Afternoon to Begin MAC Play

The Ball State men’s basketball team rides a three-game winning streak into 2025 and opens Mid-American Conference play at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Kent State.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Dane Richardson and Jana Ashley on the call, while Mick Tidrow and David Eha handle the radio broadcast on WMUN 1340AM – 92.5FM.

Kent State leads the all-time series between the two programs 50-43 and holds a 33-11 record in home games against the Cardinals. Ball State 76-69 last March 5 at Worthen Arena in the most recent meeting.

Jermahri Hill (25 points, eight rebounds) and Payton Sparks (23 points, 16 rebounds) led the Cardinals to an 89-76 win over Anderson on Tuesday afternoon to enter MAC play with a 6-6 record. Sparks scored his 1,000th career point in the New Year’s Eve contest at Worthen Arena.

Kent State (9-3) most recently beat Heidelberg 84-80 on Dec. 29 to end the 2024 part of the season with most wins in the MAC. The Golden Flashes were picked to finish third in the MAC preseason poll after advancing to the 2024 MAC Tournament title game from the No. 8 seed.

Kent State paces the league and ranks No. 26 nationally in scoring defense, allowing 63.6 points per game so far this season. The Golden Flashes are second in the conference in turnover margin (+3.5), 3-pointer defense (30.9 percent) and field goal percentage defense (40.8).

Senior center Cli’Ron Hornbeak is second in the MAC in both total rebounds (86) and rebounds per game (7.2), while redshirt senior forward VonCameron Davis paces Kent State in scoring at 14.9 points per game.

Up next for Ball State is the MAC home opener at 7 p.m. on Tuesday against Miami (OH).

1,000 FOR SPARKS: Senior center Payton Sparks scored his 1,000th career point late in the second half of the New Year’s Eve win against Anderson on his way to a 23-point, 16-rebound double-double.

The 16 boards matched his career-best, while the 23 points were one shy of tying his career-high, as the big man recorded his first double-double of the year.

ONE-TWO PUNCH: Sparks and junior guard Jermahri Hill combined for 48 points, 24 rebounds and three steals against Anderson.

The performances were Ball State’s first game of the season with multiple 20-point scorers.

BEGINNING THE YEAR AT KENT: The Cardinals play their first game of the calendar year at Kent State just like 2024 when the teams faced each other on Jan. 2, 2024 in Northeast Ohio.

The Golden Flashes are also Ball State’s most recent Mid-American Conference visitor to Worthen Arena, as the Cardinals claimed a 76-69 decision last March in Muncie in the home finale.

DOMINANT DEFENSE: Ball State limited Evansville to 43 points and 29.1 percent shooting from the field on Dec. 21. Those were the lowest tallies the Cardinals had allowed an NCAA Division I opponent to get since March 11, 2019 against Eastern Michigan.

The Cardinals limited the Purple Aces to their fewest points in the 58-game series history since 1935, and the 37-point margin of victory was the second-highest for Ball State ever vs Evansville.

MICKEY MONEY FROM THE CHARITY STRIPE: Mickey Pearson Jr. went 12-for-12 at the free throw line in Ball State’s win at Bellarmine on Dec. 14 including sinking two foul shots with six seconds to play to secure the 86-82 decision.

Pearson’s 12 free throws made were the most by a Ball State player since Taylor Persons also sunk a dozen on Nov. 18, 2018 vs App State. Pearson is the only Cardinal with multiple career games making at least 10 free throws without a miss in the last 10 seasons (10-for-10 vs Central Michigan on Jan. 6, 2024).

GORO-THREE-TO: Junior guard Juanse Gorosito was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week after hitting seven 3-pointers for 21 and adding four assists and three steals on Dec. 14 at Bellarmine.

Gorosito is second in the conference in 3-pointers made (37) and leads the league while ranking No. 11 in NCAA Division I in shooting percentage (47.4) from distance.

MILESTONE WATCH: After Sparks (1,005 points) reached the milestone last Tuesday afternoon, Jeremiah Hernandez (911) and Pearson Jr. (845) are each closing in on scoring 1,000 points in his Division I career.

Ethan Brittain-Watts recently made his 100th career 3-pointer, while Sparks (598 rebounds) is currently No. 18 in Ball State program history for a career.

KEEPING UP WITH KENTUCKY SCHOOLS: The win at Bellarmine moved the Cardinals to 2-0 this year against teams from the Bluegrass State.

The Cardinals defeated Eastern Kentucky 63-61 on Nov. 25 in the first game of the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Fla.

TOP OF THE HILL: Junior Jermahri Hill was named the Mid-American Conference Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 2 after averaging 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in three games at the Gulf Coast Showcase.

Hill had assists on three-point plays to Mickey Pearson Jr. and Payton Sparks in the final minute of the 63-61 win over Eastern Kentucky in the opener on Nov. 25. The guard ranks seventh in the MAC with 15.7 points per game on the year.

I REMEMBER YOU: Ball State has played seven different players this season who were on MAC rosters during the 2023-24 season. SIUE’s Darrion Baker (from Akron) was the seventh. The full list is below.

    Darrion Baker (Akron to SIUE)

Legend Geeter (Eastern Michigan to Detroit Mercy)

Markus Harding (Central Michigan to Indiana State)

Cyril Martynov (Eastern Michigan to Eastern Kentucky)

Zarique Nutter (Northern Illinois to Georgia State)

    B. Artis White (Western Michigan to Richmond)

GETTING TO THE LINE: The Cardinals pace the Mid-American Conference in both free throw attempts per game (27.7) and free throws made per game (19.3) through the season’s first 12 games.

Ball State ranks No. 5 and No. 9 in those categories in NCAA Division I, respectively. The total tallies (332 attempts and 231 makes) outpace the next-closest MAC team (Buffalo) by 80 attempts and 58 makes.

PEARSON POUNDING THE GLASS: Pearson Jr. tied his career-best with 13 rebounds in the season opener at Georgia State before grabbing 11 against Detroit Mercy on Nov. 20.

The forward also notched 13 boards on Nov. 7, 2022 against Earlham at Worthen Arena. Pearson Jr. ranks sixth in the MAC in total rebounds (71) and seventh in rebounds per game (5.9).

HOME STATE HEROES: Brittain-Watts (2019), Zane Doughty, Joey Hart and Jones (2023) were each named Indiana High School All-Stars, while three more Cardinals also had ties to the state before arriving in Muncie.

Ball State has the second-most players from Indiana high schools among Indiana-based Division I teams behind Purdue.

WORLD FLYERS: The 2024-25 Ball State roster consists of student-athletes from three different countries in addition to the United States of America.

Juanse Gorosito (Argentina), Hendriks (Canada) and Jurica Zagorsak (Croatia) are international Cardinals this season. Interestingly, Juanse, Ben and Jurica were born on different continents, so Ball State has student-athletes from North America, South America and Europe on the team.

TRANSFERS FROM ALL OVER: Each of Ball State’s seven student-athletes who have transferred into the program have come from different college basketball conferences.

The list includes Brittain-Watts (Patriot League, Boston), Gorosito (West Coast Conference, Portland), Hart (SEC, Kentucky), Hernandez (Ohio Valley Conference, USI), Pearson Jr. (Big 12, TCU), Sparks (Big Ten, Indiana) and Hill who played junior college ball at South Plains in Levelland, Texas.
