  • Best landing spots for PFF’s top 15 free agents: Offense

    • Tee Higgins would take the Chargers’ receiving corps up a notch: With Ladd McConkey and Higgins in tow, Justin Herbert would have more than enough weapons to thrive in 2025 and beyond.

    • Amari Cooper could be the calming presence the Steelers’ WR corps needs: Pairing the even-keeled Cooper with George Pickens would be a prudent move to calm the Steelers’ receiver room and split defensive attention.

NFL free agency is just a few months away. These are the best landing spots for PFF’s top 15 free agents on offense for the 2025 offseason.

Editor’s Note: PFF grades listed are from the past two seasons.

WR Tee Higgins, Cincinnati Bengals: 84.6 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: Los Angeles Chargers

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 1

For the second straight offseason, Higgins will be one of the most sought-after players on the market. Despite dealing with nagging injuries the past two seasons, Higgins erupted in 2024 and earned the highest PFF receiving grade of his career (88.3), ranking seventh among wide receivers.

The Chargers’ offensive success this season came despite their shallow receiving corps. Projected to own the sixth-most cap space this offseason, Los Angeles can afford to supply Justin Herbert with a dominant outside threat to pair with breakout first-year slot receiver Ladd McConkey.

G Trey Smith, Kansas City Chiefs: 83.7 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: New England Patriots

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 2

With a glowing resume to boot and the youth to further develop, Trey Smith is entering free agency at the perfect time to cash in. And who better to sign that check than the team projected to hold the most cap space ($120 million) in the NFL this offseason?

The Patriots need to work fast to rebuild their offensive line, or they risk hindering the development of their young passer, Drake Maye. This offense ranked 29th in pressure rate allowed (39%) and surrendered the second-most interior pressures (118) in the NFL in 2024.

WR Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 83.8 PFF Grade

    Best Landing Spot: Denver Broncos

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 4

Before going down with a dislocated ankle in October, Godwin was on track to produce his best season as a pro since his breakout 2019 campaign. His 85.7 PFF receiving grade through Week 7 ranked third among receivers.

Given the success Bo Nix showed in his first season — despite having few proven weapons at his disposal — Denver will want to supplement its receiving corps this offseason. Sean Payton has shown a propensity to feed targets to receivers with a proven play-making track record, which Godwin is no stranger to, having seen 130-plus targets in each of his past three full seasons.

WR Amari Cooper, Buffalo Bills: 77.2 PFF Grade

    Best Landing Spot: Pittsburgh Steelers

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 7

The 30-year-old Cooper will have his fair share of suitors on the open market, likely teams looking to add quality veteran leadership to their receiver room. What better place to provide that presence than a team with a history of animated receivers like Pittsburgh?

The Steelers were actively shopping for receiving help at the trade deadline, with reports linking them to several options, including the former Brown. Pairing the even-keeled Cooper with George Pickens would be a prudent move to calm the Steelers’ receiver room and split defensive attention.

T Ronnie Stanley, Baltimore Ravens: 73.7 PFF Grade

    Best Landing Spot: Washington Commanders

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 8

Stanley has made a living off protecting the most mobile passer the game has ever seen in Lamar Jackson, an immeasurable experience that would pay dividends to a Commanders offense looking to keep its young, dynamic passer, Jayden Daniels, upright.

Although Stanley’s 2021 ankle injury stalled his career, the veteran tackle generated a 75.0-plus PFF pass-blocking grade in each of his past three seasons.

QB Sam Darnold, Minnesota Vikings: 81.5 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: Las Vegas Raiders

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 9

Although the redemption arc of Darnold returning to New York would be poetic, the Jets have too many questions at quarterback and likely not enough cap space to facilitate a deal for their former No. 3 overall pick. However, Las Vegas projects to hold the second-most cap space this offseason and currently sits outside of the range of one of the top passers in the 2025 NFL Draft.

The Raiders are in the process of a complete overhaul and are currently without a general manager, head coach or stable quarterback. With Tom Brady weighing in at the ownership level, this team could identify Darnold’s breakout 82.0 PFF overall grade in 2024 as more than just a flash in the pan. But much has to fall into place from now until March.

WR Stefon Diggs, Houston Texans: 82.4 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: New York Giants

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 11

Diggs’ torn ACL in Week 8 will make for an interesting free-agency period between the 31-year-old receiver and teams this offseason. Prior to going down, Diggs showed no signs of slowing, on pace to produce his 10th straight campaign with a 77.0-plus PFF receiving grade.

With the Giants holding a top-three draft pick, expectations are that they will make a play for one of the top quarterbacks in the class. Pairing Diggs’ experience with Malik Nabers would provide a young passer with quality weapons in the receiving game and ample opportunity to produce quickly.

WR DeAndre Hopkins, Kansas City Chiefs: 83.5 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: New England Patriots

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 14

The Patriots made sizable investments to their receiver room during the 2024 NFL Draft, bringing in Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, but weren’t able to make strides in the passing game. Providing Drake Maye with a talented veteran on the outside who can also help elevate the team’s young talent would be a wise use of the Patriots’ league-leading cap space.

After his move to Kansas City, Hopkins generated a 78.3 PFF receiving grade while dealing with a knee injury. He hasn’t earned a season-long PFF overall grade below 70.0 since his rookie 2013 campaign.

T Cam Robinson, Minnesota Vikings: 67.6 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: Los Angeles Rams

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 17

Robinson was one of the lone bright spots of the Jaguars’ dismal start to 2024. As a result, the team dealt him to the Vikings, where he filled in for the injured Christian Darrisaw. The change of scenery hindered Robinson’s effectiveness to the tune of a 67.2 PFF pass-blocking grade, but a track record of success in Jacksonville will still warrant a solid market.

With Alaric Jackson slated to hit free agency, the Rams will be looking to replace his 80.9 PFF overall grade on the outside.

QB Justin Fields, Pittsburgh Steelers: 76.5 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: New York Jets

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 19

Despite ceding starting duties to Russell Wilson after leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record in 2024, Fields showed marked improvement. Through the first month of the year, the 25-year-old quarterback generated a 78.0 PFF passing grade, a mark that could have paced his career high.

The Jets are amidst an overhaul of football operations, searching for a general manager and head coach while also trying to navigate a strenuous situation under center. Aaron Rodgers’ future is very much in limbo. But, his $49 million dead cap hit in 2025 gives him significant leverage in those discussions. If New York hopes to move on from the veteran, it will have to eat that bill; leaving the team with little left over to negotiate for another passer.

RB Aaron Jones, Minnesota Vikings: 82.9 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: Las Vegas Raiders

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 20

Despite pushing 30 years old and finding a new home, Jones continued to perform with an exceptional level of consistency in Minnesota, having never produced a regular season below a 75.0 PFF overall grade. Armed with a new career-high mark in rushing yardage (1,138), Jones again enters the market.

Given the success he found playing with Sam Darnold in the Vikings’ backfield, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to see the Raiders invest to bring that well-rounded production to Allegiant Stadium.

C Drew Dalman, Atlanta Falcons: 84.8 PFF Grade

    Best Landing Spot: Chicago Bears

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 22

An early season ankle injury knocked Dalman out of the lineup for an extended period, but he returned to produce at a high level, typical of his resume. He generated a 78.8 PFF overall grade in his nine games in 2024. Dalman made strides in pass protection this past season, posting the lowest pressure rate of his career (3.7%).

With Coleman Shelton’s short-term deal manning the middle of this offensive line set to expire, new Bears head coach Ben Johnson may opt to replicate the success he found in Detroit with All-Pro center Frank Ragnow

G Will Fries, Indianapolis Colts: 69.8 PFF Grade

    Best Landing Spot: Houston Texans

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 24

Houston’s porous interior blocking proved to be a weakness the team struggled to overcome all year, and it ultimately sent the Texans packing from the playoffs. They surrendered the most interior sacks (24) in the NFL this season and will undoubtedly be looking to address that.

The Texans won’t be flush with cap space to spend on free agents this offseason. Fries, however, would be a match for this team, following his positive showing before going down in Week 5 with a serious leg fracture.

G Teven Jenkins, Chicago Bears: 77.3 PFF Grade

Best Landing Spot: San Francisco 49ers

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 25

A series of nagging injuries plagued Jenkins’ 2024 campaign, but even still, he managed to produce well on the interior of this Bears’ offensive line. His 75.8 PFF pass-blocking grade stands as a career high for the 26-year-old guard after he allowed just a 3.8% pressure rate (also a career high).

The Niners nailed their selection of Dominick Puni in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft but still need to build up their interior. Adding Jenkins to the left side would complement both Puni at the other guard spot and Trent Williams on the outside.

G Kevin Zeitler, Detroit Lions: 81.6 PFF Grade

    Best Landing Spot: Minnesota Vikings

    Overall Free-Agent Rank: 27

Zeitler will be 35 years old when he hits the open market, but his long track record of sustained success across multiple franchises should warrant looks from decision-makers. With Detroit this season, Zeitler generated the best PFF run-blocking grade of his career (87.2), proving to be a key contributor during the Lions’ historic season.

The Vikings need all the help they can muster to halt the constant flow of interior pressure they experienced in 2024, having allowed the highest interior pressure rate (18.8%) in the NFL.

  • Team fits for six running backs set to become free agents in 2025

I don’t see the Chargers letting Dobbins walk out the door. He’s been a perfect fit in Jim Harbaugh’s run-first offense, rushing for a team-high 905 yards and nine touchdowns in his first year in Los Angeles. He missed four games with a knee injury, but this was still his healthiest season since his 2020 rookie campaign. Able to trust his body for most of the season while working behind the Chargers’ solid offensive line, Dobbins racked up 4.6 yards per carry, ninth-most in the NFL among the 27 players to log at least 175 rushing attempts in 2024. It would make sense for the Chargers to focus on building up the pass game this offseason, but it will still be paramount to retain a tackle-breaking bowling ball like Dobbins, who’ll provide a consistent rushing attack.

With the 2025 NFL season quickly approaching, several running backs are set to become free agents. Here are some potential team fits for six of the top running backs set to hit the market:

    1. Saquon Barkley – Miami Dolphins
With a need for a dynamic playmaker in the backfield, the Dolphins could pursue Barkley to complement their young quarterback and solid receiving corps.

    2. Derrick Henry – Baltimore Ravens
Henry’s bruising running style would fit perfectly in the Ravens’ run-heavy offense, providing a powerful one-two punch alongside Lamar Jackson.

    3. Dalvin Cook – Los Angeles Chargers
Cook’s dual-threat ability as a runner and receiver would be a perfect fit in the Chargers’ high-powered offense, giving Justin Herbert another weapon to utilize.

    4. Alvin Kamara – Kansas City Chiefs
Kamara’s versatility and elusiveness would make him a perfect fit in the Chiefs’ explosive offense, providing Patrick Mahomes with another weapon to exploit mismatches.

    5. Nick Chubb – San Francisco 49ers
Chubb’s physical running style would fit well in the 49ers’ run-first offense, providing a reliable option to take pressure off their young quarterback.

    6. Aaron Jones – New England Patriots
Jones’ versatility as a runner and receiver would make him a valuable asset in the Patriots’ offense, providing Bill Belichick with another weapon to scheme around.

As free agency approaches, these running backs will have plenty of suitors vying for their services, but these potential team fits could offer the best chance for success in the 2025 season.

  • Federal agents on scene in East Boston – NBC Boston

Federal agents were spotted conducting an operation in East Boston on Wednesday.

The agents, wearing vests marked “POLICE — federal agent,” could be seen going door to door Wednesday afternoon, including at a home on Paris Street. At one point NBC10 Boston cameras captured agents putting a man inside a vehicle, apparently in custody.

The lack of clarity has neighbors on edge in a heavily migrant neighborhood concerned about how President Donald Trump’s new immigration policies could lead to enforcement actions in their communities.

“It is very sad to see someone leaving and not knowing what happened,” a neighbor named Bruno told Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra in Spanish.

José Marques Lima, who lives nearby with his family, said they saw the agents coming through the neighborhood and looking around.

NBC10 Boston did reach out to Immigration and Customs officials for comment but has not heard back.

“It’s quite scary and it’s causing a lot of concern among people in the community,” said Jeff Thielman, CEO of the International Institute of New England, which helps immigrants and refugees.

He says there are roughly 11 million undocumented people across the country.

“If millions of immigrants are deported, they will take the economy with them, because they work in many industries that are vital,” said Thielman.

“We do need immigrants, but there are many people waiting to come into the country legally,” said Janet Fogarty, a Massachusetts delegate to the Republican National Convention. “It is one of the first things President Trump said he’d do on Day 1 upon retaking the Oval Office, and he certainly has kept that promise, I support it.”

Fogarty is confident the arrests will be targeted.

“I don’t think we’re going to get everyone out who came here illegally, and President Trump has said the priority is going to be on those who have committed crimes, and those will be the first people deported,” said Fogarty.

Stay with NBC10 Boston as this story develops.

Federal agents were spotted on scene in East Boston today, causing speculation and concern among residents. NBC Boston reported that the agents were seen in the area, although their specific purpose or mission remains unclear at this time.

Witnesses reported seeing agents in tactical gear and unmarked vehicles, prompting some to wonder if a major operation was underway in the neighborhood. Many residents took to social media to share their observations and express their unease about the situation.

Local authorities have not provided any official statement regarding the presence of federal agents in East Boston, leaving the community puzzled and anxious about what may be happening in their own backyard. NBC Boston will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.

  • Trump DHS repeals key Mayorkas memo limiting ICE agents, orders parole review

EXCLUSIVE: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Monday issued memos to repeal limits on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents imposed by former DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas — and order a review of the use of humanitarian parole to admit migrants.

The first memo, a draft of which was reviewed by Fox News, rescinds a 2021 memo by Mayorkas, which provided an expanded list of areas that are “protected areas” where ICE could not engage in immigration enforcement. It said the policy was designed to make sure enforcement did not limit “people’s access to essential services or engagement in essential activities.”

Those areas include schools, universities, healthcare facilities, places of worship, “places where children gather,” social service establishments, food banks, religious or civil ceremonies and disaster or emergency response and relief centers.

“In our pursuit of justice, including in the execution of our enforcement responsibilities, we impact people’s lives and advance our country’s well-being in the most fundamental ways. As a result, when conducting an enforcement action, ICE and CBP agents and officers must first examine and consider the impact of where actions might possibly take place, their effect on people, and broader societal interests,” Mayorkas said in a statement at the time.

‘NATIONAL EMERGENCY’: TRUMP DECLARES AMBITIOUS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN IN INAUGURAL ADDRESS

President Trump presents the second executive order during the inaugural parade inside Capital One Arena on the inauguration day of his second presidential term, in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 20, 2025. (REUTERS/Carlos Barria)

The memo issued Monday rescinded that guidance and said that common sense should be used instead.

“Going forward, law enforcement officers should continue to use that discretion along with a healthy dose of common sense,” the new memo said. “It is not necessary, however, for the head of the agency to create bright line rules regarding where our immigration laws are permitted to be enforced.”

ICE agents who spoke to Fox News said they believe that rescinding the Mayorkas order is going to free them up to go after more illegal immigrants, because illegal immigrants have until now been able to hide near schools and churches and avoid arrest.

TRUMP TO DEPLOY MILITARY TO BORDER, END BIDEN PAROLE POLICIES IN FLURRY OF DAY 1 EXECUTIVE ORDERS

A separate memo, also reviewed by Fox, focuses on the use of humanitarian parole, which was used broadly by the Biden administration to allow hundreds of thousands of migrants to enter the U.S., including nearly 1.5 million via the CBP One app and parole processes for nationals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela (CHNV.) The administration also launched parole programs for nationals from Ukraine and Afghanistan.

The memo notes that the statute demands the authority be used on a “case by case basis,” something that Republican critics claim the administration has abused. It emphasizes that parole is “a limited use authority, applicable only in a very narrow set of circumstances.”

ICE agents conduct an enforcement operation in the U.S. interior on June 2, 2022. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

It also claims that “it has been repeatedly abused by the Executive Branch over the past several decades in ways that are blatantly inconsistent with the statute.”

CLICK HERE FOR MORE IMMIGRATION COVERAGE

“Most important, the parole statute does not authorize categorical parole programs that make aliens presumptively eligible on the basis of some set of broadly applicable criteria,” it says.

The memo directs the heads of (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to compile a list of instructions, policies and procedures related to parole, review them, and formulate a plan to phase out any that are not in accord with the statute.

They will then provide a report to the DHS secretary, while also pausing, modifying or ending any programs that they believe were not enacted properly, and that they can do in a way that is consistent with statutes, regulations and court orders.

The memos came just hours after Trump signed a slew of 10 border-related executive orders, including orders deploying the military to the border, ending Biden’s parole programs and ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

The orders also declare a national emergency, and order the resumption of construction of the wall at the southern border.

“All illegal entry will immediately be halted,” Trump said moments after being inaugurated. “And we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came.”

In a recent move by the Trump administration, the Department of Homeland Security has repealed a key memo issued by Alejandro Mayorkas that limited the powers of ICE agents. The memo, which was aimed at restricting the ability of ICE agents to make arrests and conduct raids, has now been overturned.

Additionally, the Trump DHS has ordered a review of parole decisions made under the Mayorkas memo, potentially leading to the release of more detainees.

This decision marks a significant shift in immigration policy and enforcement, with the Trump administration taking a more aggressive stance on the issue. Critics argue that this move will only lead to more arrests and deportations, while supporters believe it is necessary to secure the border and enforce immigration laws.

Stay tuned for updates on how this decision will impact immigration enforcement and the lives of immigrants in the United States.

  • Free Agents Who Could Join Indianapolis Colts with New Defensive Coordinator

The Indianapolis Colts are set to make some difficult decisions in the coming weeks and months.

They thought after narrowly missing the playoffs the year before, by re-signing the majority of their own players, they would use the motivation of missing the postseason as fuel to carry the team to their goals in 2024. That’s not what happened, as the team took a step back.

General manager Chris Ballard admitted after the season that the team wasn’t built well enough, and its lack of depth and competition allowed players to grow complacent.

“Making sure that we have enough competition through every position,” Ballard responded to reporters when asked where the Colts need to improve in the offseason. “To where if they’re not playing well enough, no matter the stature or status, they go to the bench and somebody else goes in the game.”

“Bringing everybody back, that was a mistake,” Ballard reflected. “That created a complacency within… There was an entitlement that, ‘You know what, I’m back. I deserve to be back.’ Which, yes, you did. But there’s also an expectation and a standard that you have to uphold.

“For much that’s given, more is expected. That’s the truth,” Ballard continued. “And when you’re on your second, third contract – damn right, there’s more expected of you to lead, to perform, like all of that is real. Ultimately, what I’ve done is created an atmosphere that wasn’t competitive enough. It wasn’t.”

In the immediate aftermath of the season’s conclusion, the Colts elected to part ways with defensive coordinator Gus Bradley following the unit’s bottom-five finish. Since then, Ballard and head coach Shane Steichen have crafted a list of five candidates that they have interviewed to fill the vacancy. The group is primarily made up of veteran coaches who have been coordinators and/or head coaches before, are recognized as strong leaders, and whose defenses are more aggressive than what the Colts have used over the last several years.

With these five candidates in mind, coupled with the knowledge that Ballard has committed to being more aggressive in player acquisition this offseason, here is each candidate and three impending free agents for each who could join the coach in Indianapolis.

    DENNIS ALLEN
    New Orleans Saints 2015-24

Cornerback Paulson Adebo (Saints 2021-24) — Adebo has steadily grown throughout his four years and was on his way to a career season in ’24 before a broken femur in Week 7 ended it prematurely. The recovery time should reportedly allow him to participate when football activities begin again in the NFL. The Colts need a more proven veteran presence in the secondary. Adding a playmaker like Adebo, who has accounted for nine takeaways the last two years, into a group featuring the oft-injured JuJu Brents, as well as Kenny Moore II, Jaylon Jones, and Samuel Womack III, provides more adequate depth and competition.

Free Safety Tyrann Mathieu (Saints 2022-24) — The Colts have a young safety they might feel confident in moving forward with in Nick Cross. However, after that, everything’s upgradeable. Mathieu will be 33 when the 2025 season begins, but you’re signing him for one year of strong leadership, stability at the free safety position, and to help make Cross even better.

Linebacker Nephi Sewell (Saints 2022-24) — Sewell is primarily a special teams player, but when asked to play significant time in Week 18 at WILL linebacker against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he had a strong performance, recording 8 tackles (2 for loss), 1.0 sack, and 1 QB hit. At worst, with Sewell, you get a solid special teams player. At best, you get an ascending player who could compete with Jaylon Carlies to potentially replace E.J. Speed.

    LOU ANARUMO
    Cincinnati Bengals 2019-24

Defensive Tackle B.J. Hill (Bengals 2021-24) — This is a bit of a luxury signing, but if the Colts want to maximize the time they have left with DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart, while also finally giving themselves a solid third interior defender, this could be a wise move. Rotating Buckner, Stewart, and Hill allows the Colts to put constant stress on opposing run gaps and the backfield. The Colts gave up over 130 yards per game on the ground in 2024.

Defensive End Joseph Ossai (Bengals 2021-24) — The Colts’ defensive end rotation could use a veteran added to it. Dayo Odeyingbo is an impending free agent, Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam only have one year left on their contracts, and Ebukam is returning from a torn Achilles at nearly 30 years old. Ossai would be fine as defensive end depth near the bottom of the rotation after producing 9.5 sacks and 74 pressures in the last three years.

Defensive End Cam Sample (Bengals 2021-24) — There aren’t a ton of great options for Anarumo connections, which can help explain what led to his demise. However, Sample has been a solid special teams contributor and member of the defensive line rotation in Cincinnati. Like Ebukam, Sample also tore an Achilles in August but is going to be just 25 years old when the 2025 season begins.

    EPHRAIM BANDA
    Cleveland Browns 2023-24

Safety D’Anthony Bell (Browns 2022-24) — Bell is primarily a special teams player but has done some nice things in 420 career defensive snaps, including two interceptions and three pass breakups. This is more of a depth signing, but that’s something the Colts didn’t really have at safety in 2024. Bell has a direct connection to Banda, as Banda was Bell’s position coach the last two years.

Linebacker Devin Bush (Browns 2024) — Bush had been widely considered disappointing as a former 10th overall draft pick, but after leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers, he went to the Seattle Seahawks for a year before landing with the Browns. According to Pro Football Focus, 2024 in Cleveland was far and away Bush’s best season, totaling 76 tackles (8 for loss), 1.0 sack, 1 QB hit, and 3 pass breakups. Do the Colts take a gamble that Bush has finally got it figured out?

Defensive Tackle Maurice Hurst (Browns 2023-24) — Hurst has had a long, productive seven-year career, but his second season in Cleveland was a tough one. An ankle injury limited him to eight games, and his uncharacteristic lack of production came as a likely result. Throughout his career, PFF considers him a good player both in run support and rushing the passer.

    WINK MARTINDALE
    New York Giants 2022-23

Cornerback Adoree’ Jackson (Giants 2021-24) — At this point of his career, Jackson is perfect for what the Colts need. He’s a proven veteran with 82 career starts under his belt but has begun transitioning into more of a role player. The Colts can still start their young corners with Jackson behind them as a security blanket.

Cornerback Nick McCloud (Giants 2022-24) — McCloud has 16 career starts under his belt and would be a good backup to the Colts’ young boundary corner core of Brents, Jones, and Womack. McCloud is also solid in run support, which isn’t always easy to find in a corner. He also intersected with Anarumo briefly with the Bengals in 2021.

Safety Jason Pinnock (Giants 2022-24) — Pinnock isn’t much more than an average-level starter, but the Colts had very little depth at safety in 2024. He’s started 39-of-58 career games, and while it wouldn’t be ideal to go into 2025 with him as a starter, he’s be a great third option.

    STEVE WILKS
    San Francisco 49ers 2023

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw (2019-24) — Greenlaw suffered a torn Achilles in the 2023-24 Super Bowl, which kept him out until near the end of the 2024 season. Being beyond a year removed from the injury by the time free agency hits, Greenlaw could be back to himself for the 2025 season. He spent 2022 and 2023 as one of the best linebackers in the NFL, so he should still be worth a role of the dice. In his lone season with Wilks, Greenlaw totaled 120 tackles (5 for loss), 1.5 sacks, 4 QB hits, 2 interceptions, and 4 pass breakups.

Safety Talanoa Hufanga (2021-24) — Like Greenlaw, Hufanga spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons as one of the NFL’s premier players at his position, earning Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro honors in ’22. He suffered a torn ACL in November 2023 but was able to get back for seven games in 2024. Hufanga’s been great in run support and pass defense and has been a playmaker throughout his career, totaling 7 interceptions, 14 pass breakups, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 defensive touchdown.

Cornerback Charvarius Ward (2022-24) — Ward is the kind of player with a winning background that the Colts need. He won a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019-20 and was a Pro Bowler and Second-Team All-Pro with the 49ers in 2023. He’s been in the playoffs in six of his seven seasons, has started 89-of-102 career games

With the Indianapolis Colts recently hiring a new defensive coordinator in Gus Bradley, there are several free agents who could potentially join the team and bolster their defense. Here are a few players who could be a good fit for the Colts under Bradley’s leadership:

    1. Richard Sherman – The veteran cornerback has a history of playing in Bradley’s defensive scheme during their time together with the Seattle Seahawks. Sherman’s experience and leadership could be valuable additions to the Colts’ secondary.

    2. Melvin Ingram – The edge rusher has a proven track record of getting after the quarterback and could provide a much-needed boost to the Colts’ pass rush. With Bradley’s expertise in developing defensive linemen, Ingram could thrive in Indianapolis.

    3. K.J. Wright – The linebacker has played under Bradley in Seattle and is known for his versatility and intelligence on the field. Wright could help solidify the Colts’ linebacker corps and provide a steady presence in the middle of the defense.

    4. Malik Hooker – The former Colts safety could potentially return to Indianapolis and reunite with Bradley, who could help unlock Hooker’s full potential. With Bradley’s emphasis on creating turnovers, Hooker could thrive in his system.

Overall, these free agents could be intriguing options for the Colts as they look to improve their defense under Gus Bradley’s guidance. It will be interesting to see if any of these players end up joining Indianapolis in the upcoming offseason.

  • Dodgers land multiple top free agents, plus remembering Bob Uecker

The Windup Newsletter | This is The Athletic’s MLB newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Windup directly in your inbox.

Not content to simply win it all, the Dodgers Death Star project has now completed (maybe?) its second winter of construction. We also say goodbye to Bob Uecker, who passed away at 90 years old, and look at the latest with Vlad Jr. in Toronto. I’m Levi Weaver, here with Ken Rosenthal. Welcome to The Windup!

Big Deals: Dodgers sign Sasaki and Scott

Maybe the Dodgers should buy TikTok while they’re at it.

After months of speculation, a decision has been made: For a signing bonus of $6.5 million, 23-year-old RHP Roki Sasaki will be a Dodger, alongside countrymen Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The teammates from the 2023 World Baseball Classic champion Japan will be in a rotation that also includes Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell before getting to a second tier of starters that includes Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, Bobby Miller, Landon Knack, Ben CaspariusEmmet Sheehan, River Ryan and Gavin Stone (some of whom will miss time recovering from injuries).

Oh, right: and probably Clayton Kershaw at some point.

The bad news for opposing lineups is once they get the starter out of the game, the Dodgers bullpen — which already included Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Alex Vesia and Evan Phillips — will now include the top left-handed reliever on this year’s free agent market: Tanner Scott joined the wrecking crew on a four-year deal worth $72 million.

Please note: We have yet to mention their lineup of former MVPs and All-Stars.

MLB hasn’t seen a true dynasty in quite a while. The last team to win multiple titles in a row? The 1998-2000 Yankees. A lot can go wrong in any given season, but sheesh — LOT would have to go wrong for this team to be anything short of dominant for the foreseeable future.

Sure, it’s easy to be cynical and say, “Surrrrre they didn’t have a handshake deal with Sasaki.” It’s reasonable to have your suspicions (though the league’s investigation concluded there wasn’t an illegal agreement in place). It’s also possible that L.A. is just the place where Sasaki felt he had the best opportunity to succeed. Can you blame him?

With apologies to the Padres and the Blue Jays (who came up just short yet again), the Dodgers’ winning streak didn’t end with the last out of the 2024 World Series. It might have been just the beginning.

    More on Sasaki:

    • One reason the Dodgers are stocking up on pitching? A history of injuries. Ken tells us that their big responsibility now is to keep Sasaki healthy.
    • MLB experts weigh in on Sasaki’s fit with the Dodgers, and the fallout around the league.

Ken’s Notebook: Inside the Dodgers’ ‘homework assignment’

From my recent column with Fabian Ardaya, Dennis Lin, Patrick Mooney and Will Sammon:

Perhaps it was fitting that everyone could see the UCLA campus outside the window. Inside a long conference room off Wilshire Boulevard, team after team attempted to recruit the most coveted free agent of the moment. The suitors included storied franchises and less heralded organizations, all seeking to woo a quiet 23-year-old with a roaring fastball and an air of mystery. They did not arrive, however, without some sense of direction.

    Roki Sasaki had assigned homework.

It was December in Los Angeles, and as Sasaski met with teams at the headquarters of the Wasserman Sports Agency, he remained several weeks away from finalizing his choice. But after years of anticipation, these gatherings represented the homestretch of a long selection process, and at this critical juncture, the Japanese star seemed clear about what he wanted to hear. He asked each potential employer to explain the reason behind a vexing issue that lingered over his final season before a long-anticipated jump to the majors: Why did his velocity fall off?

The question was pointed and “incredibly thoughtful,” according to one of the executives tasked with answering it. It also proved consuming, posed to teams just days before the first round of meetings.

“The homework assignment,” said one club official briefed on the process, “was the presentation, basically.”

With a cadre of representatives by his side, Sasaki essentially interviewed any team he wanted, allowing him to gain valuable insights from a host of pitching experts. So the presenters made their pitch for roughly 90 minutes at a time. In the same way that front offices hunt for every piece of information and press every advantage in a negotiation, Sasaki came away with analysis from some of the sport’s most progressive organizations, all but one of which he is now tasked with beating.

“It was smart,” said one high-ranking official from a team that presented to Sasaki but did not advance to the final round.

Not everyone viewed it as charitably.

“It was a little bit like, ‘Hey, man, you’re asking for some things that get beyond that line of proprietary,”’ said a decision maker for another club. “It did kind of get to that line a little bit where you’re like, ‘Really?’ But you’ve got to make a decision and then kind of put your best foot forward.”

Legends: Bob Uecker dies at 90

There really wasn’t anyone else like Bob Uecker. One of the sport’s most beloved personalities, Uecker died Thursday at 90 years old, having battled small cell lung cancer since early 2023.

It’s kind of perfect that a .200 hitter worth a career -1.0 bWAR earned the nickname “Mr. Baseball.” The voice of the Brewers for the last 53 years, Uecker’s celebrity transcended the greater Wisconsin area. Guest appearances on “Johnny Carson,” a role (as broadcaster Harry Doyle, of course) in “Major League,” numerous appearances on “Mr. Belvedere” and a string of beer commercials helped make him a household name.

Here are our four tributes to the Hall of Fame announcer:

    • Grant Brisbee focused on Uecker’s time in the pop culture limelight and how he personified the fun of the game.
    • Tyler Kepner tells how Uecker’s humor was what we knew him for, sure, but his humanity was right there beside it. Did you know that both Bob Gibson and Henry Aaron called Uecker to say goodbye on the days they passed away?
    • Jayson Stark commemorated Uecker in classic Stark fashion: a list of fun facts about his life and career, both on and off the field.
    • And Kamila Hinkson compiled a list of tributes from family and friends, including former Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy’s story of a prank Uecker played on him during a fishing trip.

Crystal Ball: Vlad’s future in Toronto

It’s a situation that has been building to a head for over a year now: Will the Blue Jays sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to an extension to keep the face of the franchise in Toronto? Or will they determine his price is too high and trade him before he hits free agency?

Given their recent streak of disappointments in attempts to add star power in free agency — Sasaki follows Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto on a list of players reportedly considering the Blue Jays before signing elsewhere — it seems like they should be a little extra motivated not to start subtracting.

But if you follow the trail of breadcrumbs in this week’s news, you might start to wonder.

Let’s start with another first baseman whose team is in the process of making a stay-or-go decision: Pete Alonso, whose free agency is apparently hitting a tipping point. Reports surfaced this week that the Mets are considering other avenues.

But as part of that reporting, it came to light Thursday that the Blue Jays are now in the mix for Alonso. Later that day, Ken and Will Sammon reported this:

The Blue Jays have not spoken to Guerrero’s camp about an extension since before Christmas, according to a source briefed on the conversations. However, those talks are expected to accelerate before Guerrero’s self-imposed deadline of Feb. 17, the day before the Jays hold their first full workout for pitchers and position players.

If the Blue Jays do sign Alonso, it wouldn’t be impossible to roster both guys — Guerrero has played 110 games at third base in the big leagues, and both could take at-bats at DH. But it doesn’t seem like a long-term fit. Either way, it sounds like we’ll have an answer on an extension in less than a month.

The Los Angeles Dodgers make a huge splash in free agency, landing multiple top players to bolster their roster for the upcoming season. But before we dive into the latest signings, let’s take a moment to remember the legendary Bob Uecker.

  • What’s on the mind of the Eagles’ soon-to-be free agents?

Vic Fangio and the Eagles built the league’s best defense in 2024, thanks to smart free-agent signings from Howie Roseman such as Zack Baun.

In the playoffs, each Eagles game could be their last, so on the latest episode on unCovering the Birds, Jeff McLane talked to a few of the Birds’ pending free agents about their experience with the Eagles and their upcoming free agency,

Defensive tackle Milton Williams is having the best season of his career in the fourth year of his rookie contract. Williams, who was drafted by the Eagles in the third-round in 2021, wants to stay in Philadelphia.

“I want to stay here because I mean, the Philly culture, the Philly fans, the media,” Williams said. “When you aren’t looking good, y’all are going let us know quick. … I don’t know if it’s like that in other spots, but I definitely say they make you play harder. Once you know everybody is really paying attention, you don’t want to let anybody down.”

Baun was a revelation in his first year in Philadelphia, becoming a first-team All-Pro player and a Defensive Player of the Year candidate in Fangio’s defense. He’s sure to be in high demand in free agency in the offseason — and he told unCovering the Birds that his agent hasn’t had much communication with the Eagles.

“It’s a win-win situation,” Baun said. “I want to stay here, but everything has to work out, and it takes two to tango in that regard.”

» READ MORE: Howie Roseman brings down the house in surprise appearance at Jason Kelce ESPN taping

Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers wants to stay in Philadelphia, but is approaching every game with the Eagles like it might be his last.

“It’s harder for people like me, upcoming free agents, where now these games are win or go home,” Rodgers said. “If you don’t, then you’ve got to pack up and go, so I look at it differently than most people here, because a lot of people are on longer terms than I am. It’s one of those moments where I try not to look ahead, but I definitely kind of have to at the same time, so it’s kind of frustrating.”

For more from pending free agents and on the Birds’ approach to the upcoming game against the Rams, listen to the full episode of unCovering the Birds.

As the NFL offseason approaches, many Philadelphia Eagles players are facing the uncertainty of free agency. With several key contributors set to hit the open market, fans are left wondering what is going through the minds of these soon-to-be free agents.

From star wide receiver Alshon Jeffery to veteran defensive end Vinny Curry, there are a number of Eagles players whose futures with the team are up in the air. Will they re-sign with Philadelphia, or will they look to test the waters elsewhere?

For some players, free agency represents an opportunity to cash in on their success and secure a lucrative contract. For others, it may mean saying goodbye to a team and city that they have called home for years.

Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain: the Eagles’ soon-to-be free agents have some big decisions to make in the coming months. Stay tuned to see where they ultimately decide to land.

  • Arizona Cardinals 2025 free agents breakdown: Defense and specialists

As the 2025 NFL season approaches, the Arizona Cardinals are faced with several key decisions regarding their impending free agents on defense and special teams. Let’s take a closer look at who may be staying and who may be leaving in the upcoming offseason.

    Defense:

    1. Chandler Jones, DE: Jones has been a standout pass rusher for the Cardinals for years, but as he nears the end of his career, the team may need to decide if they want to invest in a long-term contract extension or look to move on and find younger talent.

    2. Byron Murphy, CB: Murphy has emerged as a solid cornerback for the Cardinals and will likely be a top priority to re-sign. His versatility and playmaking ability make him a valuable asset to the defense.

    3. Budda Baker, S: Baker is one of the top safeties in the league and will command a hefty contract in free agency. The Cardinals will have to decide if they are willing to pay top dollar to keep him in Arizona.

    Specialists:

    1. Matt Prater, K: Prater has been a reliable kicker for the Cardinals, but at 41 years old, the team may look to bring in younger competition or explore other options in free agency.

    2. Andy Lee, P: Lee has been a steady punter for the Cardinals, but at 43 years old, the team may opt to go in a different direction and look for a younger punter in free agency.

Overall, the Cardinals will have some tough decisions to make on defense and special teams in the 2025 offseason. They will need to balance their desire to keep key players with the need to stay within the salary cap and build for the future. It will be interesting to see how the team navigates these decisions in the coming months.

  • The Night Agent’s Gabriel Basso Does His Own Stunts Because ‘I Enjoy Acting, I Don’t Like Lying’

Gabriel Basso prefers to do his own stunts whenever possible.

“I think that can kind of get misconstrued into the world of like, I do it because I want to say I can do it, and it’s really not about that,” The Night Agent star, 30, said during a Tuesday, January 14, appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “To me it’s about audience immersion.”

Basso stars in the Netflix series as FBI agent Peter Sutherland, who works in the White House as a Night Action telephone operator. He told Fallon, 50, that when the audience watches The Night Agent, he wants them to feel that his performance is believable.

“I don’t want the audiences watching the show, and then right as I’m about to get hit or hip tossed or thrown on my back, you know. I feel like it’s a lie,” the actor said. “I enjoy acting, I don’t like lying.”

The Night Agent’s Gabriel Basso Breaks Down His Training Method for Season 1: ‘I Just Wanted to Be Strong and Look Strong’

For Basso, he views it as there’s a “difference” when it comes to executing stunts for the “sake of the audience immersion” and “the sake of believability.”

“They like Peter [and] to watch him take hits is important, I feel like,” he explained. “And if that requires me to get tossed into a wall, then fine. It’s not the end of the world.”

The Night Agents Gabriel Basso Explains Why He Does Stunts Himself

One stunt that was on the table for Basso was skydiving — which he already does in his personal life.

“[Netflix] brought it up as an idea and then I was like, ‘Oh I already skydive. I’ll do it,’” Basso said. “But then insurance called and was like, ‘Yeah stop it.’”

Fallon then showed a photo of Basso skydiving.

“I went down to Skydive San Diego,” Basso explained of the photo of him soaring in the air. “I got my A-Class recertified”

The late night host then realized he was holding the photo of Basso in the air upside down. Basso quipped the photo of him in the sky “looked cooler the other way” as his back was seemingly facing the ground.

“I like that. That’s hard to do,” Fallon teased before re-enacting the pose in his chair. “You really gotta arch your back.”

The Night Agent’s Gabriel Basso Wants Peter Sutherland to Die at Some Point: ‘It’s a Natural’ Arc

Last month, Basso made an epic jump out of Netflix’s blimp during the Christmas Day football game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Houston Texas. Basso parachuted out of the blimp in Houston. After completing the stunt, he subsequently revealed that the season 2 trailer for The Night Agent dropped.

“It was cool to see Houston from a blimp. Definitely a memory!” Basso said to Netflix’s Tudum in December 2024.

The Night Agent season 2 premieres on Netflix on Thursday, January 23.

Gabriel Basso, star of the hit TV show The Night Agent, is not your average actor. Not only does he deliver powerful performances on screen, but he also insists on doing his own stunts. Why? Because, in his own words, “I enjoy acting, I don’t like lying.”

In an industry where stunt doubles are often used to ensure the safety of actors, Basso’s commitment to authenticity sets him apart. He believes that by performing his own stunts, he is able to fully immerse himself in his character and deliver a more genuine performance.

Basso’s dedication to his craft has not gone unnoticed. Fans and critics alike have praised his work on The Night Agent, with many pointing to his intense and realistic action sequences as standout moments in the show.

So next time you tune in to watch The Night Agent, keep an eye out for Gabriel Basso’s fearless stunts. And remember, this talented actor isn’t just in it for the fame and fortune – he’s in it for the love of the craft.

  • 3 free agents the NY Mets shouldn’t pass on again

During the 2024-25 offseason, the New York Mets have been one of the most active teams. They landed the biggest fish of the free agent market in Juan Soto, inking him to the largest contract in North American sports history. They also brought back Sean Manaea, the ace of the 2024 pitching staff. As well as several other complementary pieces. However, they still could use a few pieces to solidify the rosters. Roles that can be filled by players they have passed on in the past. So who are these passed-on players that can help the Mets in 2025?

    1) Jack Flaherty

Early this week, we did an entire story about why Jack Flaherty should be someone the Mets bring in. Flaherty is a pitcher haven’t passed on once, but twice in the last year. Last offseason, Flaherty was one of the guys the Mets were interested in giving a one-year prove-it deal to, ultimately passing and signing Manaea and Luis Severino. They also had the chance to acquire him at this year’s trade deadline but passed again.

Flaherty made the most of his one-year deal. Between his time with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers he pitched to a 3.17 ERA over 162 innings with 194 strikeouts to 38 walks, a 1.068 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 127. He also played a role in the Dodgers’ run to winning the World Series. Flaherty started Game 1 of the NLCS against the Mets and dominated. He went seven innings giving up zero runs and striking out six and allowing two hits and two walks. Setting the tone for the rest of the series.

Although 2024 was one of the best seasons of Flaherty’s career, it’s far from an outliner. Over his eight years in the bigs, he has an ERA of 3.63, with 942 strikeouts to 292 walks, a 1.182 WHIP, and an ERA+ of 112. These are the numbers of a solid mid-rotation guy. He’s not gonna come in here and be the ace of the staff. However, he’ll slot in nicely behind guys like Manaea and Kodi Senga.

Flaherty would bring stability to this Mets rotation. Although this rotation is better than it was in 2024, there are still questions on if a lot of those arms can repeat what they did last season. Flaherty is a guy that the Mets can rely on regardless of what everyone else does.

    1. Trevor Bauer – The Mets missed out on signing Bauer last offseason, but they shouldn’t pass on him again this year. Bauer is coming off a Cy Young-winning season and would provide a much-needed boost to the Mets’ rotation.
    2. J.T. Realmuto – The Mets have been in need of a reliable catcher for years, and Realmuto is the best in the business. They shouldn’t make the same mistake of passing on him again and should do everything in their power to bring him to Queens.
    3. George Springer – The Mets were reportedly interested in signing Springer last offseason, but ultimately missed out on him. Springer would provide a much-needed power bat in the outfield and would be a significant upgrade for the team. The Mets shouldn’t let him slip away again this year.
