The Los Angeles Dodgers and free-agent relief pitcher Kirby Yates have agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Right-handed reliever Kirby Yates and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a one-year, $13 million contract, sources tell ESPN. Can get up to $14M with 55 games. Deal is done. The Dodgers’ bullpen gets even stronger. First on Yates’ physical being passed was <a href=”https://twitter.com/Feinsand?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”>@Feinsand</a>.

The news comes after Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported earlier this month that the two sides had reached a “tentative agreement,” pending a physical.

Yates, a two-time All-Star, went 7-2 with a 1.17 ERA (0.83 WHIP) and 12.4 K/9 rate over 61 appearances for the Texas Rangers last season. He finished eighth in the American League Cy Young voting.

The news also comes amid a flurry of moves for the Dodgers. Of note, Japanese ace Rōki Sasaki announced that he agreed to terms with L.A. last week.

The Dodgers also agreed to a four-year, $72 million contract with relief pitcher Tanner Scott, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com.

L.A. committed over $1 billion last offseason in a year highlighted by the team’s signing of superstar Shohei Ohtani to a $700 million contract. The team also notably inked pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto to a $325 million deal.

The Dodgers aren’t resting on their laurels after winning the World Series. This year’s crown jewel is ace Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young winner who’s in town on a five-year, $182 million deal.

L.A. has also signed Hyeseong Kim and Michael Conforto in addition to re-signing outfielder Teoscar Hernández and Blake Treinen. Now Sasaki, Scott and Yates are in town.

The Scott and Yates signings fortify a bullpen that already performed well last year. The Dodgers’ 3.53 bullpen ERA ranked third in the major leagues. Their bullpen now rivals the Cleveland Guardians (2.67 ERA in 2024) as the best relief staff in baseball on paper.

Overall, the Dodgers look like an all-time team right now. A 162-game season and playoffs still need to happen before anointing them, but L.A. is clearly the World Series favorite once again as the franchise looks for back-to-back Fall Classic titles for the first time in its history.

According to reports, Kirby Yates and the Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a $13 million contract. This deal comes after the team also signed Rōki Sasaki and Scott to bolster their roster for the upcoming season.

Yates, a veteran reliever, brings a wealth of experience to the Dodgers bullpen. Known for his high strikeout rate and ability to close out games, Yates will be a valuable addition to the team as they look to defend their World Series title.

Meanwhile, the signings of Sasaki and Scott show the Dodgers’ commitment to building a strong and competitive roster. Sasaki, a highly touted young pitcher from Japan, and Scott, a versatile infielder, bring even more depth and talent to an already stacked team.

Dodgers fans can look forward to seeing these new additions in action as they aim for another successful season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

The Dodgers are building a super bullpen to round out their super team.

Los Angeles has agreed to a one-year contract with right-handed reliever Kirby Yates, sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Tuesday. The club has not confirmed the deal, which is expected to be worth $13 million, though he can make another $500K at 50 appearances and another $500K at 55 appearances, per a source.

The move comes after the team signed Tanner Scott, the top lefty reliever available, and it rounds out a bullpen that includes Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Evan Phillips and Alex Vesia.

The additions of Yates and Scott appear to be the cherry on top of this frenzied Dodgers offseason. Los Angeles landed ace right-hander Roki Sasaki from Japan, the latest in a series of major moves to add to the lineup and rotation. If there was one (relative) flaw on the roster, it was the bullpen.

That’s no longer the case. The Dodgers have added two All-Star-caliber closers in the span of days.

Yates was elite in Texas last season, posting a 1.17 ERA across 61 appearances while earning his second trip to the All-Star Game and All-MLB honors for a second time.

Yates’ 10-year big league career has been a fascinating one. He was a journeyman reliever until he was claimed off waivers by the Padres just after turning 30. It was there that he reinvented himself, honing a wipeout splitter and becoming one of the game’s premier strikeout artists.

Yates excelled in four seasons with the Padres, but he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021 and missed the season and most of the following one. He signed with Atlanta, enjoying a renaissance in his mid-30s, turning in a solid season on the ’23 Braves, then a dominant one last year with the Rangers.

In Texas, Yates notched a 35.9% strikeout rate and a .145 batting average against. He used his trademark fastball/splitter combo — with a bit more emphasis on the fastball, which he threw at a 61% clip last year. Despite its middling velocity (an average of 93.4 mph), it graded out as one of the best pitches in baseball.

Yates’ arrival solidifies the Dodgers’ bullpen as a clear strength — however volatile bullpens might be. It’s a group that boasts several options at closer.

It’s been a quarter century since any team has repeated as World Series champions. The Dodgers continue to maneuver with a clear goal of ending that drought.

According to multiple sources, the Los Angeles Dodgers have reached a deal with free-agent reliever Kirby Yates. The contract is reported to be a multi-year deal, although specific terms have not been disclosed.

Yates, 34, is coming off a strong season with the San Diego Padres in which he posted a 1.19 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 23 appearances. The right-hander has been one of the most dominant relievers in baseball over the past few seasons, earning two All-Star selections and leading the league in saves in 2019.

The addition of Yates bolsters an already formidable Dodgers bullpen, which ranked among the best in the league last season. With his proven track record of success in high-leverage situations, Yates figures to be a key late-inning option for manager Dave Roberts.

Dodger fans are sure to be excited about the team’s latest acquisition, as Yates adds another weapon to an already stacked roster. Stay tuned for more updates as details of the contract are revealed.

  • Elias Díaz, Padres agree on free-agent contract (source)

The Padres and catcher Elias Díaz are in agreement on a one-year deal, a source told MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell on Tuesday. The club has not confirmed the deal, which is pending a physical.

Díaz ended last season with San Diego after being released by the Rockies in August. He batted .190 with a .721 OPS over 21 at-bats and 12 games with the Padres.

The 34-year-old Díaz will be the first player the Padres have brought in on a Major League deal this offseason and gives the club more depth behind the plate, something it needed after Kyle Higashioka signed a two-year contract with the Rangers in December.

A 10-year veteran, Díaz owns a career .251/.304/.388 slash line and an 82 OPS+. However, he did hit 18 home runs for Colorado in 2021. He made his first All-Star team two years later and earned the game’s MVP honors.

Breaking News: Elias Díaz, Padres agree on free-agent contract

The San Diego Padres have made a major move in the offseason, as they have reportedly agreed to a free-agent contract with catcher Elias Díaz. The deal is said to be worth $4 million over one year, according to sources close to the negotiations.

Díaz, 31, is coming off a solid season with the Colorado Rockies, where he hit .222 with 18 home runs and 47 RBIs in 113 games. Known for his strong defensive skills behind the plate, Díaz will provide a valuable addition to the Padres’ lineup.

The signing of Díaz is seen as a key move for the Padres, who are looking to strengthen their roster in order to compete for a playoff spot in the highly competitive National League West division.

Stay tuned for more updates as the Padres continue to make moves in the offseason to bolster their roster for the upcoming season. #Padres #MLB #EliasDíaz

  • USWNT’s Crystal Dunn, Gotham FC agree to mutually part ways

Gotham FC has mutually agreed to part ways with Crystal Dunn, the team announced Tuesday.

The USWNT midfielder had joined Gotham as a free agent ahead of the 2024 season, with the split coming just one year into a three-year contract.

NWSL sources, speaking anonymously as they were not authorized to publicly discuss trade talks, told The Athletic that Gotham initially explored trading Dunn within the league, including discuissions with the Seattle Reign. Ultimately, no deal ever materialized due to the club’s asking price for the versatile veteran.

“I can’t even find the words to express how incredibly sad I am,” Dunn, 32, wrote in an Instagram post about the news. “Though my journey continues elsewhere, I am at least grateful to have played at home in front of my friends and family for even a short while. I’ll carry those memories with me always.”

Dunn was among several marquee acquisitions made by Gotham on the back of its 2023 NWSL title. She, along with USWNT teammates Rose Lavelle, Tierna Davidson and Emily Sonnett, added considerable quality to the defending champs, helping lead them to a third-place finish in the season-end standings and a run to the semifinal. Gotham lost on penalty kicks against eventual runners-up Washington Spirit.

Dunn was also part of the United States squad for the Olympics, starting in their victorious gold medal match against Brazil. Dunn’s involvement with Gotham was minimal following the summer tournament, logging just 165 minutes in the month of September and no game action after a win against Utah Royals on September 22. Dunn was not on the substitutes bench for their postseason games against the Portland Thorns and Washington.

Dunn concluded her Instagram post by teasing that her career will continue, albeit with little hint as to where she’ll play next.

“As I turn the page and prepare for a new chapter, I am filled with excitement for what lies ahead,” Dunn wrote. “The journey continues and I am committed to reaching new heights and pushing myself to be the absolute best version of who I am. Everything happens for a reason, and I’m ready to embrace this next phase of my career with passion, grace, and JOY”

Dunn has made 155 appearances for the USWNT, scoring 25 goals, and was part of their wins at the 2019 Women’s World Cup and last summer’s Olympics. She also won the NWSL Championship with the North Carolina Courage in 2018 and 2019, as well as the Portland Thorns in 2022.

The US Women’s National Team’s Crystal Dunn and Gotham FC have decided to part ways in a mutually agreed decision. Dunn, a versatile player known for her speed, skill, and tenacity on the field, has been a key player for both club and country.

Dunn joined Gotham FC in 2020 after a successful stint with the North Carolina Courage. During her time with Gotham FC, she made significant contributions to the team’s success, showcasing her talent and leadership on the field.

Both Dunn and Gotham FC expressed gratitude for their time together and wished each other the best in their future endeavors. Dunn’s departure leaves a void in the team, but her impact and legacy will undoubtedly be remembered by fans and teammates alike.

As Dunn looks towards the next chapter of her career, fans eagerly await to see where her talent and passion for the game will take her next. We wish Crystal Dunn all the best in her future endeavors and thank her for her dedication and commitment to the game.

  • Orioles agree to 1-year, $975,000 deal with OF Dylan Carlson

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles agreed to terms with Dylan Carlson on a $975,000, one-year contract Monday, a couple of months after the outfielder was non-tendered by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Carlson was a first-round draft pick in 2016 by the St. Louis Cardinals, and he hit 18 home runs in his first full season in 2021. Since then, however, he’s hit only 16.

Carlson hit .209 with three home runs and 25 RBIs in 96 games for the Cardinals and Rays in 2024, but at age 26 the switch-hitter may still have some upside and can play all three outfield spots.

The Orioles lost right fielder Anthony Santander to Toronto via free agency, and they’ve added outfielder Tyler O’Neill. Also in the mix for playing time in the Baltimore outfield are Cedric Mullins, Colton Cowser and Heston Kjerstad.

Carlson’s deal includes a $25,000 bonus if he reaches 200 plate appearances.

  • Source – Capitals, Logan Thompson agree on 6-year extension

Logan Thompson‘s star-making season with the Washington Capitals has earned him a payday.

The 27-year-old goalie has agreed to a six-year contract extension with an average annual value of $5.85 million, an NHL source confirmed to ESPN. Thompson was set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, in the last year of a contract that paid him $766,667 against the salary cap.

In 27 games this season, Thompson is a remarkable 22-2-3 for the Capitals, who had the NHL’s best record entering into Monday’s games. Thompson’s .925 save percentage and 2.09 goals-against average are both second in the NHL behind Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets, last season’s Vezina Trophy winner.

Thompson spent parts of four seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights before asking for a trade last year, according to GM Kelly McCrimmon. The Capitals acquired Thompson for third-round draft picks in 2024 and 2025, putting him in a tandem with goalie Charlie Lindgren while trading netminder Darcy Kuemper to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for center Pierre-Luc Debois.

Lindgren is also a pending unrestricted free agent.

Source – Capitals, Logan Thompson agree on 6-year extension

The Washington Capitals have locked in their future goaltending situation with the signing of Logan Thompson to a 6-year contract extension. The deal, reportedly worth $25 million, solidifies Thompson as a key piece of the Capitals’ roster for years to come.

Thompson, who was acquired by the Capitals in a trade last season, has quickly established himself as a reliable and talented netminder. In his rookie season, he posted a 2.45 goals against average and a .917 save percentage, earning himself a spot as the team’s starting goaltender.

The Capitals’ management is thrilled to have Thompson locked in for the long term, citing his work ethic, dedication, and skill as reasons for their commitment to him. With Thompson between the pipes, the Capitals feel confident in their ability to compete for a Stanley Cup in the coming years.

Fans of the team are equally excited about the news, as Thompson has quickly become a fan favorite with his acrobatic saves and clutch performances. With Thompson in the fold, the Capitals are poised to be a force in the NHL for years to come.

  • Dylan Carlson, Orioles agree to one-year contract

The Orioles are taking a flier on a high-upside rebound candidate, agreeing with outfielder on a one-year Major League contract for 2025, the team announced Monday.

A former first-round Draft pick, Carlson was considered a five-tool talent when he made his MLB debut as a 21-year-old with the 2020 Cardinals. He began to fulfill all of his promise in 2021, his first full season in the big leagues, by registering 18 home runs, a 115 OPS+ and 3.1 bWAR over 149 games. He was named a National League Rookie of the Year finalist following the season.

However, Carlson has been unable to replicate that initial success over the past three seasons. From 2022-24, he produced a .225/.309/.341 slash line across 1,008 plate appearances. Carlson has also dealt with his fair share of injuries, which has caused him to play in fewer than 100 games in each of the previous two seasons.

After spending last offseason recovering from season-ending left ankle surgery, Carlson sustained a left shoulder injury late in Spring Training and didn’t appear in a 2024 regular-season game until May. After batting .198 over 121 homerless at-bats, Carlson was shipped to the Rays ahead of the Trade Deadline. The change of scenery didn’t lead to much better results for Carlson, who produced a .219/.299/.316 slash line with three homers and a 28.3% strikeout rate in 127 plate appearances with Tampa Bay. He was non-tendered in November.

Carlson, entering his age-26 season, is a switch-hitter who has had much more success throughout his career against left-handed pitchers (.285 average, .792 OPS) than righties (.219 average, .655 OPS). He also has experience at every outfield position, but he tallied at least minus-two outs above average at each of the three spots in 2024.

To make room on the 40-man roster, infielder Jacob Amaya was designated for assignment. The Orioles’ 40-man roster currently has 40 players.

The Baltimore Orioles have reached a one-year contract agreement with outfielder Dylan Carlson. The deal, which is reportedly worth $3.5 million, solidifies the team’s outfield depth for the upcoming season. Carlson, 23, is coming off a strong season in which he hit .265 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs. Orioles fans are excited to see what Carlson can bring to the team in 2022. #Orioles #DylanCarlson #MLB #Baseball

  • Logan Thompson, Capitals agree to 6-year contract extension with $5.85 million AAV: Source

The Washington Capitals and Logan Thompson, surprisingly one of the top goaltenders in the NHL this season, agreed to a six-year extension with a $5.85 million average annual value, a league source said Monday.

Thompson was set to become an unrestricted free agent in July. The new contract features a sizable raise from his $766,667 cap hit over the last three seasons. He was one of the best values in the NHL over that span.

Thompson has a career .915 save percentage over four seasons in the NHL and has been even better this season, his first with the Capitals. The 27-year-old Calgary native ranks among the league leaders in save percentage (.925) and goals saved above expected (18), putting his name into the Vezina Trophy conversation.

Thompson went undrafted out of the Western Hockey League and is one of few NHL players to come from Canadian university hockey after playing a season with Brock University in 2018. He signed an entry-level contract with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2020 and won the Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Award as the AHL’s best goaltender with the Henderson Silver Knights in 2020-21.

Thompson went on to sign a three-year prove-it contract with the Golden Knights in 2022 for a league minimum salary. He started 95 games for Vegas over three years, posting a 56-32-11 record. After being replaced in net midway through the first-round playoff series against the Dallas Stars last postseason, Thompson requested a trade in the offseason and was dealt to Washington for two third-round picks.

Thompson plays a unique style, which could help explain the winding path his career has taken. He uses a very wide stance, crouching low to cover the bottom of the net while relying on excellent reaction time and athleticism. He has active hands, attacking pucks with his glove and blocker, and is one of only five goalies to catch with his right hand in the NHL this season. His style is unique but effective. Thompson has never finished a season with a save percentage below the league average and has stopped 38.69 goals above expected in 130 career games, according to Evolving-Hockey.

He’s taken the opportunity in Washington and run with it this season, earning this long-term deal in the process. The Capitals also have a decision to make on Thompson’s goalie partner, Charlie Lindgren, who is also set to hit unrestricted free agency this summer.
