  • Gen Z Begs for Return of Outdated Millennial Staple, Internet Agrees

A woman has urged for the return of a millennial hair staple, the side part, sparking a lively discussion online.

Alexis Cushman (@lexicushmann), 20. from Florida, shared a video of herself styling her hair to the side, which garnered over 1.3 million likes and more than 10.8 million views on the app.

“I think the side part went out of style and was more in style earlier in the 2000s,” Cushman said in the clip. “I think a lot of people have moved to the middle part lately and I always see people with side parts being told to switch to a middle part to follow the trend.

“I love when people play with their hair and flip it around; it gives more volume and body to the hair, and I think it looks great on everyone!” Cushman told Newsweek.

Alexis Cushman addresses the camera. The social-media influencer told Newsweek why she has called for the return of the once-extremely popular hairstyle.

    lexicushmann/lexicushmann

Side parts have long been a defining hairstyle, particularly popular among millennials during the early 2000s. Known for their ability to soften facial features and create a polished look, side parts gained widespread appeal through their association with celebrities and iconic styles of the time.

“Can we bring back side parts? I’m sick of everyone acting like they’re weird,” Cushman wrote as the text overlaying the video.

The side part’s popularity began to wane in recent years as younger generations, particularly on TikTok, championed the middle part. Many Gen Z users have deemed side parts outdated, with some claiming they make a person look older or less stylish. The shift to middle parts has been tied to the platform’s influence in reshaping beauty norms.

However, recent fashion and beauty trends suggest the side part may be making a comeback. Designers and hairstylists have begun embracing the look once more, with runway shows and celebrity appearances featuring updated takes on the classic side part.

The social-media reaction to Lexi’s video was divided, with some users critiquing her attempt at a side part.

“Sooo close that right there is a middle part flipped over not side part but actual side parts are very rarely cute unless it has a ton of volume and rlly [really] done up and curled,” posted one viewer.

“This is more of a middle part with a hair flip not a side part,” commented Naomi.

“When I say this discourse is ONLY online … I’ve never changed to fit trends and no one has ever said a word to me and I get compliments on my style all the time,” added Sydney.

“Literally who says they [are] weird people still do side parts,” wrote Amyah.

Many users said: “Do what you want.”

“I still see negative comments surrounding the side part and think it should make a comeback this year! Because of the negative comments on the side part still, I just made a little video saying let’s bring it back! It’s cute and fun!” Cushman concluded.

Gen Z has spoken, and they want the return of a beloved millennial staple: the humble CD player. In a recent social media campaign, members of Gen Z have been pleading for the revival of the outdated technology, citing nostalgia and a desire to disconnect from the digital world.

The campaign, which has gained traction on platforms like TikTok and Twitter, has sparked a wave of support from millennials and even some older generations who fondly remember the days of burning mix CDs and carefully organizing their music collections.

Many users have expressed frustration with the streaming services and the constant connectivity that comes with digital music consumption. They long for the simplicity and tactile experience of popping in a CD, flipping through the booklet, and pressing play.

Some have even gone as far as digging out their old CD collections and dusting off their old CD players, relishing in the analog sound and the physicality of music that they feel is missing from today’s digital age.

The overwhelming support for the return of the CD player has led to calls for music companies to consider bringing back the technology, at least in a limited capacity for those who still appreciate the nostalgia and charm of physical media.

Whether or not the CD player will make a comeback remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Gen Z’s plea for the return of this outdated millennial staple has struck a chord with internet users across generations.

  • Toyota’s Hino unit agrees to plead guilty in $1.6 billion settlement of U.S. emissions fraud case

U.S. officials announced a $1.6 billion deal with Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors late Wednesday to settle charges it deceived regulators about the amount of emissions spewed by its diesel engines.

Hino used altered emissions test data to get approval to import and sell more than 110,000 diesel engines to the U.S., most of which were installed in heavy-duty trucks made by Hino, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

As part of the deal, Hino will plead guilty to engaging in a criminal conspiracy to mislead regulators and consumers, violating environmental protection laws and endangering public health, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a news release.

U.S. regulators and the state of California, which has strict vehicle emission standards, worked out criminal and civil remedies with Hino valued at more than $1.6 billion.

The deal includes a $521.76 million criminal penalty, $442.5 million in civil penalties to U.S. authorities and $236.5 million to California, according to the Reuters news agency.

“Hino’s actions directly undermined EPA’s program to protect the public from air pollution,” acting EPA administrator Jane Nishida said in a release.

The proposed settlement is contingent on approval from a federal district court judge in Michigan.

“Corporate crimes such as these endanger the health and well-being of innocent Americans, as well as the environment in which we all live,” said U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan Dawn Ison.

The deal includes a five-year term of probation during which Hino will be barred from importing diesel engines it has manufactured into the United States, and implements a comprehensive compliance and ethics program, according to the EPA.

“This resolution is a significant milestone toward resolving legacy issues that we have worked hard to ensure are no longer a part of Hino’s operations or culture,” Hino Motors CEO Satoshi Ogiso said in a statement. “We deeply apologize for the inconvenience caused to our customers and stakeholders. In order to prevent a recurrence of this kind of issue, we have implemented company-wide reforms, including meaningful improvements to our internal culture, oversight and compliance practices.

Hino will also have to recall some trucks with engines violating emissions standards and spend some $155 million to replace marine and locomotive engines throughout the U.S. to offset excess air emissions, according to the EPA.

Toyota’s Hino unit has agreed to plead guilty in a $1.6 billion settlement of a U.S. emissions fraud case. The settlement comes after an investigation revealed that the Japanese truck maker had installed devices in its vehicles to cheat emissions tests.

This is a major blow to Toyota, which has been a leader in the automotive industry for years. The company has been working to rebuild its reputation after previous scandals, and this latest development is sure to set back those efforts.

The settlement also serves as a warning to other automakers that fraudulent emissions practices will not be tolerated. It sends a clear message that companies must adhere to regulations and be transparent in their operations.

As consumers become increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of vehicles, it is crucial that automakers prioritize compliance with emissions standards. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and responsibility in the automotive industry.

  • Hyeseong Kim agrees to contract with Dodgers (source)

Hyeseong Kim agrees to contract with Dodgers (source)

The Dodgers have agreed to a deal with Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

The deal is for three years and a guaranteed $12.5 million with an option for 2028-29 that could increase the value of the deal to $22 million. The club has not confirmed the deal, which needs to be approved by Major League Baseball, per Feinsand.

Kim, one of the top hitters in the KBO, was posted by his team, the Kiwoom Heroes, in early December. That marked the beginning of a 30-day window for the 25-year-old second baseman to sign with an MLB team, with a deadline of 5 p.m. ET Friday to reach an agreement. Any team willing to pay to the Heroes the corresponding release fee and any applicable supplemental fees was able to negotiate with Kim.

Kim has batted .304 and logged a .364 on-base percentage over eight seasons with the Kiwoom Heroes. Kim has also stolen at least 20 bases in each of the past seven seasons, reaching as high as 46 in 2021. A left-handed hitter, Kim slashed .326/.383/.458 with 11 home runs and 30 steals for Kiwoom this year.

Kim, who turns 26 years old later this month, is a four-time winner of a KBO Golden Glove Award, which honors the best overall player at each position in the KBO. He won the award in each of the past three seasons at second base after claiming it at shortstop in 2021.

After weeks of negotiations, Hyeseong Kim has officially agreed to a contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The talented pitcher from South Korea is set to bring his skills to the Major League Baseball team, adding depth to their already impressive roster.

Kim, known for his fastball and pinpoint accuracy, is expected to make an immediate impact on the Dodgers’ pitching staff. With his signing, the team solidifies their bullpen and strengthens their chances of contending for a championship in the upcoming season.

Dodgers fans are eager to see Kim in action and are hopeful that his addition to the team will help lead them to success on the field. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development! #Dodgers #HyeseongKim #MLBSigning

  • Josh Rojas agrees to contract with White Sox (source)

Josh Rojas agrees to contract with White Sox (source)

CHICAGO – The White Sox have agreed to terms with free agent infielder/outfielder on a one-year-deal, a source told MLB.com on Thursday. The club has not confirmed the deal.

Rojas, 30, was non-tendered by the Mariners on Nov. 22 but received interest from multiple teams following the move. The left-handed hitter finished 2024 with a .225/.304/.336 slash line over 142 games and 476 plate appearances for the Mariners, knocking out eight home runs, 19 doubles, two triples and adding 31 RBIs, 48 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. He hit .318 with a .938 OPS in March/April but posted a .192 average with a .574 OPS over 57 second-half games.

But Rojas’ greatest value should come from his defensive versatility. During this past season, Rojas played 131 games at third base, 11 at second, six in left field, one at first base and even pitched in two games. For his six-year career, Rojas has played mostly at third (282 games) and second (150) but also has 44 games at shortstop and 43 in right.

Bryan Ramos and Miguel Vargas are present White Sox options at third base, with Brooks Baldwin and Lenyn Sosa at second and Jacob Amaya joining Baldwin and Sosa at shortstop. Colson Montgomery, ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 4 White Sox prospect and No. 37 overall, will have a chance to break Spring Training as the team’s starting shortstop, but Rojas could get regular at-bats across all three infield positions.

Adding Rojas also gives the White Sox a talented veteran who can help the team in the present while becoming a possible trade chip at the Deadline to advance the club’s ongoing rebuild. Rojas has a career slash line of .247/.323/.362, having hit .266 with a .746 OPS, 20 homers, 57 doubles and 100 RBIs over 1,060 plate appearances for Arizona from 2021-22.

Breaking News: Josh Rojas agrees to contract with White Sox

In a surprising turn of events, infielder Josh Rojas has agreed to a contract with the Chicago White Sox. The deal, which is reportedly worth $3.5 million over two years, comes after Rojas became a free agent earlier this offseason.

Rojas, who spent the past few seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, is known for his versatility in the infield and his ability to hit for power. The White Sox are hoping that Rojas can provide some much-needed depth to their lineup and help them make a strong push for the playoffs next season.

Fans of the White Sox are sure to be excited about this latest addition to their team, and Rojas himself is said to be thrilled at the opportunity to play for a competitive team like Chicago.

  • Corbin Burnes agrees to $210M contract with Diamondbacks

Corbin Burnes agrees to $210M contract with Diamondbacks

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - OCTOBER 01: Corbin Burnes #39 of the Baltimore Orioles pitches the ball against the Kansas City Royals during the second inning of Game One of the Wild Card Series at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on October 01, 2024 in Baltimore, Maryland. Corbin Burnes is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and it wasn’t cheap.

The 2021 Cy Young Award winner agreed to a six-year, $210 million deal with the Diamondbacks early Saturday morning. Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported the agreement, which has an opt-out for Burnes after two seasons.

The contract is the largest in Diamondbacks history. Burnes, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, will now pitch for the local team after reportedly turning down offers from the San Francisco Giants and Toronto Blue Jays.

The deal ends Burnes’ tenure with the Baltimore Orioles after one season. The AL East contenders went for a splashy trade last winter by acquiring the right-hander from the Milwaukee Brewers, but it ended up being a one-year rental.

It’s not like Burnes didn’t deliver for Baltimore. From his Opening Day start (6 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 11 strikeouts) to his sole postseason start (8 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 3 strikeouts), Burnes was the bona fide ace the Orioles were looking for when they traded for him, but his free-agent market was likely out of Baltimore’s price range.

Because Burnes turned down a qualifying offer from Baltimore, the Orioles will receive draft pick compensation from his new team.

Looking over the past half-decade, there is no question that Burnes has been one of MLB’s top aces.

Since the 2020 season, Burnes ranks third in MLB in innings pitched with 816 2/3, fourth in ERA at 2.88, sixth in FIP at 3.01, second in strikeouts with 946 and fourth in bWAR with 18.6. There is nothing you could look for in a pitcher that Burnes isn’t great at.

It remains an impressive success story for a player who was legitimately one of the worst pitchers in MLB in 2019. In 49 innings pitched, Burnes posted a galling 8.82 ERA. That remains the worst ERA by any pitcher in Brewers history with at least 40 innings pitched. Only 23 pitchers in MLB history have posted a worse mark in that many innings.

Then Burnes turned his career around by introducing a cutter that is now his signature pitch. That said, he actually cut down his cutter usage from 55.4% to 45% this season while still having a great season.

However, there are some reasons for concern that Burnes could be on the decline, starting with the fact that he’s already north of 30 years old. After posting whiff rates above 35% from 2019 to 2022, he fell below 29% in 2023 and 2024. This past season, batters also both swung and made contact with pitches in the zone from Burnes at the highest rate since his miserable 2019 season.

Burnes’ velocity has stayed steady so far in his career, but in 2024, he struck out batters at a mediocre rate by MLB standards and at an abysmal rate by his own standards. Quite a few ERA predictors haven’t been fans of his peripherals over the past two seasons as well.

Still, what matters are results, and Burnes has continued to deliver. Even a pitcher performing at 90% of Burnes’ prime is one of the most valuable pitchers in the game, and there are pitchers older than Burnes who are still getting paid tens of millions per year.

Giving Burnes this much money is fine, and he would be a great addition for any team. It’s just important to be aware of what trends he needs to buck to stay among MLB’s elite.

In a blockbuster deal, the Arizona Diamondbacks have reportedly agreed to a massive $210 million contract with star pitcher Corbin Burnes. The agreement, which is said to be for 7 years, solidifies the Diamondbacks’ rotation and makes Burnes one of the highest-paid players in baseball.

Burnes, who is coming off a Cy Young-winning season with the Milwaukee Brewers, was highly sought after by multiple teams in free agency. However, the Diamondbacks were able to secure his services with their lucrative offer.

The 27-year-old right-hander has established himself as one of the most dominant pitchers in the game, boasting a career 2.89 ERA and a staggering 13.5 K/9 rate. His addition to the Diamondbacks’ rotation is expected to elevate the team to championship contention.

Fans of the Diamondbacks are thrilled with the news, as Burnes brings a much-needed boost to their pitching staff. With Burnes now locked up long-term, the Diamondbacks look poised to make a serious run at the World Series in the coming years. Stay tuned for more updates as the deal becomes official.

After Max Fried signed his eight-year deal with the Yankees, Burnes, the 2021 NL CY Young winner was the top pitcher still hanging on the market.

But the four-time All-Star will now join a Diamondbacks team that’s one year removed from winning the NL pennant.

Last year with the Orioles, the righty pitched a 2.92 ERA over 194¹/₃ innings.

The 30-year-old has a 3.19 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across seven seasons.

    This is a developing story

In a shocking turn of events, starting pitcher Corbin Burnes has agreed to a six-year, $210 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The deal, which includes a full no-trade clause, marks one of the largest contracts in MLB history for a pitcher.

Burnes, who was coming off a dominant season with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he won the NL Cy Young award, was one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason. Many teams were vying for his services, but ultimately it was the Diamondbacks who were able to secure his signature.

The 27-year-old right-hander is expected to anchor the Diamondbacks’ rotation for years to come, providing a much-needed boost to their pitching staff. • Gleyber Torres agrees to contract with Tigers (report)

Gleyber Torres agrees to contract with Tigers (report)

Former Yankees infielder has agreed to a deal with the Tigers, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported it’s a one-year contract for $15 million. The club has not confirmed.

Torres’ 2024 was a tale of two very different baseball seasons. He had a rough start at the plate, and his defense and baserunning suffered as his offensive woes persisted. But after a pair of benchings, the tide seemed to turn for Torres.

From Aug. 3 on, serving mainly as a leadoff man ahead of the Yankees’ big boppers, he hit .302 down the stretch and became a driving force behind the club’s AL pennant run and subsequent trip to the World Series. Of the Yankees’ 14 postseason games, Torres reached safely in each of the first 13.

Torres’ Major League career has featured flashes of brilliance. At the time of his debut in 2018, he was ranked as the No. 3 prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. In his first two Major League seasons, Torres was a two-time All-Star, hitting .275 with a .511 slugging percentage and 125 OPS+ with 62 home runs and 167 RBIs.

A 2020 move to shortstop, his natural position, exacerbated existing defensive concerns and appeared to contribute to a dip in production. From 2020-21, he had a .366 SLG. The Yankees would later shift him back to second in late 2021, and there he did rebound at the plate, hitting .266/.330/.452 with an OPS+ of 116 from 2022-23, although he has never quite recaptured his All-Star form.

In a surprising turn of events, Gleyber Torres has agreed to a contract with the Detroit Tigers. The young infielder, who has spent the past few seasons with the New York Yankees, is set to bring his talents to the Motor City.

According to reports, Torres and the Tigers have agreed to a multi-year deal that will see him donning the Old English D in the upcoming season. This move comes as a shock to many baseball fans, as Torres was seen as a key player for the Yankees and was expected to stay with the team for the foreseeable future.

The Tigers, who have been rebuilding their roster in recent years, are clearly making a statement with this signing. Torres, known for his defensive prowess and powerful bat, will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to their lineup.

As details of the contract continue to emerge, fans are eagerly anticipating seeing Torres in action for his new team. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development in the world of baseball.

After their run to the World Series, the New York Yankees will need a replacement for a key member of their lineup.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, second baseman Gleyber Torres agreed to a free-agent contract with the Detroit Tigers on Friday, ending his run with the Yankees after seven seasons.

Terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Torres had played the 2024 season on a one-year, $14.2 million deal after avoiding arbitration, and he said in February, “I want to be a Yankee for life.” Despite a strong finish to the year, the team chose not to retain him.

In 154 regular-season games, Torres hit .257 with 15 home runs and 63 RBI. He found a groove after the All-Star break and was moved into the leadoff spot in New York’s lineup, hitting .292 over the second half of the year. During the team’s postseason run, he hit .241 with two home runs and eight RBI as the Yankees ultimately lost the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games.

Torres spent two-and-a-half years in the Chicago Cubs farm system at the start of his career before being traded to the Yankees in 2016. He made his major league debut two years later in 2018 and made an immediate splash, earning back-to-back All-Star selections in his first two seasons.

However, the 28-year-old’s production leveled off after his scorching start to his career, causing him to be subjected to trade rumors and questions about his effectiveness at second base. Over the second half of the 2024 season and the playoffs, he proved that he can still be a difference-maker in the right situation.

Overall, Torres owns a .265/.334/.441 slash line in 888 career games, and he has registered 138 home runs, 441 RBI, 460 runs scored and 53 stolen bases.
