Maryland’s state spending board on Wednesday approved two construction contracts totaling $41.5 million for projects at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport.
The Maryland Board of Public Works approved a $5.5 million contract that will add two lanes to a security checkpoint for concourses D and E to alleviate passenger volume, as the current checkpoint reaches capacity during peak periods.
The board also approved a $36 million contract to replace the airport’s more than 20-year-old outbound baggage systems for the international terminal. The project will also include the expansion of the Transportation Security Administration baggage screening facility and improvements to existing international baggage claim carousels.
“As travel continues to grow, we are working to ensure the best airport experience for our passengers while creating more opportunities for our airline partners,” said Ricky Smith, executive director and CEO of BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, in a statement. “These projects are consistent with our commitment to providing a safe, efficient, and comfortable airport.”
BWI Marshall Airport accounts for $11.3 billion of economic impact, with the airport and its visitors supporting more than 107,000 jobs throughout Maryland and the region. The airport also provides about 300 nonstop departures each day to approximately 90 domestic and international destinations.

The Maryland spending board has approved contracts for several projects at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). The projects are aimed at improving the airport’s infrastructure and enhancing the passenger experience.
One of the contracts approved is for the construction of a new secure connector between Concourses B and C. This connector will allow passengers to move between the concourses without having to go through security again, making it more convenient for travelers with connecting flights.
Another contract approved is for the design and construction of a new parking garage at the airport. This garage will provide additional parking spaces for travelers, helping to alleviate congestion in the existing parking facilities.
Overall, these projects are part of the airport’s ongoing efforts to modernize and improve its facilities. By investing in these projects, BWI aims to provide a better experience for passengers and maintain its position as a leading airport in the region.
BALTIMORE — Baltimore Washington Thurgood Marshall Airport is receiving $41.5 million for improvements to security screening checkpoint and baggage handling systems, the airport announced Monday.
The funding will be split between two projects. $5.5 million will go towards the expansion of BWI’s D/E security checkpoint, and $36 million will improve baggage systems in the international terminal.
The D/E checkpoint project will add two lanes to the security checkpoint, which serves domestic and international passengers. Currently, the checkpoint reaches maximum capacity during peak periods. The additional lanes will help the airport accommodate increased passenger volume.
The international terminal project will replace outbound baggage systems, which have been in use since the facility was originally built more than 20 years ago. The project will also expand the baggage screen facility, and upgrade existing international baggage claim carousels.
The airport said it generates a total economic impact of $11.3 billion, supporting more than 107,000 jobs throughout Maryland and the region.
TSA reports more flight passengers with guns
The Transportation Security Administration said it saw an increase in the amount of guns detected at security checkpoints in Baltimore/Washington area airports in 2024.
Officers intercepted a record 47 guns from BWI Airport checkpoints in 2024, according to officials. Of the three airports in the region – including Washington National (DCA) and Dulles International (IAD) – BWI saw the highest number of guns recovered.
In May 2024 a BWI Airport employee was stopped with a loaded handgun at a security checkpoint, TSA said.
Nationwide, 6,679 firearms were recovered in 2024.

Customs agents intercept drug smuggling attempt
DULLES, Va. – Nearly 70,000 Ambien pills that were concealed in yarn were seized at Washington Dulles International Airport.
Authorities say U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents confiscated the pills on January 16 during a routine inspection of a shipment of yarn from India. The initial discovery was made in December.
Officials say nearly 70,000 Zolpidem Tartrate pills, the generic name for the drug, were found inside 96 rolls of black yarn spooled around pink tubes at an air cargo warehouse at the airport.
Seized pills valued at $33,000; hidden in 96 yarn rolls
The pills weigh 60 pounds and are valued at about $33,000.
“This is a very bold attempt to smuggle a significant amount of prescription medicine into the United States, but this creative concealment method failed to fool Customs and Border Protection officers,” said Christine Waugh, CBP’s Area Port Director for the Area Port of Washington, D.C. in a statement. “CBP officers are committed to protecting the public by intercepting illicit and potentially dangerous products that arrive at our nation’s ports of entry every day.”

Customs and Border Protection officers at Dulles International Airport made a shocking discovery recently when nearly 70,000 Ambien pills were found concealed in yarn.
The pills, typically used to treat insomnia, were stuffed inside skeins of yarn in an attempt to smuggle them into the country. The total street value of the pills is estimated to be over $1 million.
This seizure highlights the lengths some individuals will go to in order to bring illegal substances into the United States. It also serves as a reminder of the diligent work done by CBP officers to protect our borders and keep dangerous drugs off the streets.

VIRGINIA (WDBJ) – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is now accepting digital Virginia IDs at airport security checkpoints, the TSA announced Tuesday.
According to the TSA, travelers can download the Virginia Mobile ID (mID) app and scan their phone in replacement of a physical ID.
To download the app, users must have a valid Virginia drivers license or ID card.
The TSA adds the scanning technology is able to verify the traveler’s ticket, replacing the physical boarding pass in security checkpoints. A boarding pass must still be presented to an airline gate agent.
The TSA states the mID is accepted at over 230 airports, with more airports being added each week.
Great news for travelers in Virginia! The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced that they are now accepting digital Virginia IDs at airport security checkpoints. This means that travelers can now use their digital driver’s licenses or identification cards on their smartphones to pass through security, making the process more convenient and efficient.
This new update is part of TSA’s efforts to modernize and streamline the security screening process. By accepting digital IDs, travelers no longer have to worry about carrying around physical copies of their IDs, reducing the risk of losing or misplacing them.
To use a digital ID at airport security checkpoints, travelers simply need to present their digital ID on their smartphone to the TSA officer, who will verify the information using a specialized device. It’s important to note that not all states currently offer digital IDs, so travelers should check with their state’s department of motor vehicles to see if they are eligible.
Overall, this is a positive step forward in making the travel experience smoother and more convenient for passengers. So next time you’re heading to the airport, don’t forget to take advantage of this new option and breeze through security with your digital Virginia ID!
