MATCHDAY! Feyenoord vervolgt uitdagende reeks tegen Ajax
Het is weer matchday! Nadat de wedstrijden tegen Bayern München en LOSC Lille met dubbele gevoelens achter ons liggen, staat vandaag De Klassieker tegen Ajax op het programma. Voor Feyenoord is een resultaat enorm belangrijk met het oog op een ticket voor de Champions League. Het duel volg je vanaf 14:30 uur live op ESPN 2.
Na de 3-0 overwinning op Bayern München en 6-1 nederlaag tegen Lille is het vooral de vraag welke kant het op gaat vallen zondag. Feyenoord heeft het vaak lastiger zodra het spel zelf gemaakt moet worden en de kans is groot dat Ajax juist verdedigend zal gaan spelen. Een overwinning is niet alleen voor de ranglijst belangrijk, maar ook voor de gemoedstoestand met wedstrijden tegen PSV en AC Milan in aantocht.

De laatste twee uitwedstrijden onder Arne Slot werden in de hoofdstad gewonnen, maar momenteel verkeert Feyenoord wel in een mindere fase. Het vertrouwen dat een wedstrijd nog wel wordt omgedraaid, of überhaupt overtuigend vertrouwen op een resultaat, ontbreekt regelmatig. “Het is belangrijk om onze focus te houden op de wedstrijd tegen Ajax. In negentig minuten kan al veel gebeuren qua resultaat. De bedoeling is natuurlijk dat wij naar Amsterdam gaan om die wedstrijd te winnen”, sprak Brian Priske uit op de persconferentie.
Op de openbare training van zaterdagmiddag waren Jakub Moder, Quinten Timber en Quilindschy Hartman alle drie aanwezig. Bij de laatste twee namen is het de grote vraag hoeveel minuten ze exact kunnen maken tegen Ajax. De Poolse aanwinst zal naar alle verwachting zijn debuut gaan maken. “Hij traint goed en zijn vorm is ook goed. Als je hem nu ziet op het trainingsveld, dan ziet dat er top uit”, liet de trainer weten.
De kans is groot dat Moder aan de aftrap zal verschijnen en tijdens de wedstrijd gewisseld zal worden voor Timber. Op het middenveld kunnen ook In-Beom Hwang en Antoni Milambo zich opmaken voor een basisplaats. De verwachting is dat er in de opstelling verder nog drie wijzigingen plaatsvinden. Zo zullen Timon Wellenreuther, Givairo Read en Ayase Ueda aan de aftrap beginnen in plaats van Justin Bijlow, Bart Nieuwkoop en Santiago Gimenez.

Met de kleine Italiaan als trainer staat de ploeg uit Amsterdam momenteel op een pijnlijke negen punten voor Feyenoord. Farioli relativeert het belang van de Klassieker voor zijn ploeg. “We het ook wel blijven zien als wat het is: gewoon de volgende wedstrijd. De uitkomst gaat niet bepalend zijn voor hoe ons seizoen afloopt. Voor de supporters is het een mooie gelegenheid, voor ons is het een wedstrijd waar we drie punten in kunnen verdienen. De supporters zullen ons helpen, die doen hun werk erg goed.”
Voor Feyenoord is het een aderlating dat Gimenez niet mee kan doen, maar Farioli denkt dat het vertrek van de Mexicaan wel op te vangen is. “Hij is een topaanvaller. Het is niet zomaar dat hij gelinkt wordt aan grote clubs. Maar Feyenoord heeft genoeg alternatieven die Gimenez kunnen vervangen. Of hij er nou wel of niet is, het wordt een zware wedstrijd. We hebben anderhalve week geleden gezien wat ze tegen Bayern München hebben gedaan.”

© ImagoFollowing a sobering fifth-placed finish in the Eredivisie during the 2023-24 campaign, Dutch giants Ajax are beginning to slowly ascend towards the top of European football once again, with Thursday night’s hosts practically assured of a place in the top 24 of the Europa League.
Collecting 10 points from their first seven matches of the league phase, De Godenzonen are sitting in 16th position in the 36-team rankings, meaning that an extraordinary set of results would need to occur to knock the Eredivisie side out of the competition on the final matchday.
That being said, there was a shock result for Ajax last Thursday night, when Francesco Farioli‘s troops were stunned by Latvian minnows Rigas Futbola Skola, who snatched all three points from their battle in Riga courtesy of a late strike from 22-year-old midfielder Adam Markhiev.
Back on their own patch for the first time since the 2-1 Eredivisie success over RKC Waalwijk on January 11, De Godenzonen will be looking to continue a stellar recent record at the Johan Cruijff Arena, with the hosts enjoying a three-game winning streak at the Amsterdam venue.
© ImagoHeading into the final game of their January schedule, Galatasaray have tasted defeat in a competitive match on just three occasions so far during a terrific 2024-25 campaign, with two of those losses coming against Young Boys in Champions League qualifying in August, sentencing the Turkish side to a term in the Europa League.
Cimbom have not sulked following that heartbreak against the Swiss champions, though, instead turning into one of the best outfits in UEFA’s second-tier club competition, with Thursday’s visitors alongside Lazio and Manchester United as one of three clubs who are still unbeaten in the league phase.
However, a record of four draws across seven contests so far means that Okan Buruk‘s men still have plenty of work to do in order to secure an automatic spot in the last 16, with Galatasaray currently occupying ninth position, one point and one place behind FCSB in eighth.
Despite being wanted by a number of elite European clubs over the summer, Victor Osimhen eventually opted for a loan move to Cimbom, with the Nigerian marksman a key asset for the Turkish side, scoring 16 goals in all competitions, including four goals in five Europa League battles.

Tullberg: “Nicht Ajax oder Barca. Wir sind Borussia Dortmund”
Noch ist unklar, wie lange Mike Tullberg Interimstrainer des BVB bleiben darf. Beim Champions-League-Spiel gegen Donezk aber sitzt der Däne definitiv noch auf der Bank – und setzt wie gegen Bremen auf Primärtugenden.
“Er war vom ersten Tag an sehr selbstbewusst und hat eine Top-Energie”, sagt Gregor Kobel über den abgebildeten Mike Tullberg.

Als Trainer von Borussia Dortmund erlebt man selten ruhige Phasen, doch so turbulent, wie sich die Situation derzeit für Interimscoach Mike Tullberg beim BVB darstellt, ist es dann doch außergewöhnlich. Der Däne muss nicht nur die Unruhe ausblenden, die rund um den nach einem neuen Trainer und Neuzugängen suchenden Klub herrscht. Er muss auch eine zutiefst verunsicherte Mannschaft zurück in die Erfolgsspur führen.
Tullberg versucht daher erst gar nicht, sein Team mit Inhalten zu überfrachten, sondern setzt – wie bereits bei seiner Premiere beim 2:2 gegen Bremen – darauf, über Primärtugenden zurück zu Selbstvertrauen, Lockerheit und Erfolgserlebnissen zu finden. “Wir sind nicht Ajax oder Barcelona. Wir sind Borussia Dortmund”, sagte Tullberg am Dienstag auf der Pressekonferenz vor dem abschließenden Spieltag der Ligenphase der Champions League, an dem der BVB am Mittwoch (21 Uhr, LIVE! bei kicker) auf Schachtar Donezk trifft: “Leidenschaft und Mut – für diese Tugenden steht dieser Verein.”
Natürlich gebe er der Mannschaft auch inhaltliche Anmerkungen mit auf den Weg. In der Kürze der Zeit, die er mit dem Team habe, seien aber “riesige Ansätze” nicht möglich. Wenn jedoch die läuferischen und kämpferischen Attribute stimmen würden, “dann ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit groß, dass wir das Spiel gewinnen”.
Nmecha und Süle fallen aus
Personell muss Tullberg bei der Aufgabe gegen die Ukrainer neben dem Langzeitverletzten Niklas Süle (Aufbautraining) auch auf Felix Nmecha verzichten, der sich eine Bänderverletzung am Knie zugezogen hat und mehrere Wochen ausfallen wird. Als Reaktion darauf arbeitet der Klub an einem Ende der Ausleihe von Salih Özcan an den VfL Wolfsburg.
Der defensive Mittelfeldspieler könnte aber frühestens in der Zwischenrunde der Königsklasse, für die sich der BVB bereits sicher qualifiziert hat, für den Klub auflaufen – sofern er denn nachnominiert wird. Der zuletzt angeschlagene Waldemar Anton, der nach kicker-Informationen in Bologna einen kleinen Muskelfaserriss erlitt, ist einsatzfähig.
Während der BVB als derzeit 14. für einen Einzug unter die Top 8 einen eigenen Sieg und externe Schützenhilfe benötigt, rangiert Donezk derzeit auf Rang 27 der 36 Klubs umfassenden Liga-Tabelle. Kleine Hoffnungen auf einen Sprung unter die besten 24 Teams dürfen sich aber auch die Ukrainer noch machen.

Erfolge sind das Wichtigste, was wir jetzt brauchen”, sagte der Schweizer, der sich lobend über den Einfluss von Tullberg auf die Mannschaft äußerte: “Wir haben ja noch nicht lange das Vergnügen zusammen, aber er war vom ersten Tag an sehr selbstbewusst und hat eine Top-Energie.”
Nicht ausgeschlossen ist daher, dass Tullberg auch über das Spiel gegen Donezk auf der Trainerbank des BVB sitzt. Zumindest in Heidenheim, wo der Klub am Samstag in der Bundesliga gefordert ist, dürfte der Däne noch einmal in der Verantwortung stehen. Sollte keine Einigkeit mit einem externen Trainerkandidaten erzielt werden können, auch darüber hinaus.
