Akron went 1-2 against the Golden Flashes in 2022-23 with each side defending its home court, while Kent State won in the MAC Tournament to take a 82-80 advantage in the overall series. In 2020-21, Akron swept the season series, claiming the New Year’s Day game at The JAR (66-62) and followed with a win at the M.A.C. Center in Kent, Ohio on Feb. 5 (72-61). The season sweep marked the first time either team swept the series since the 2011-12 season when Akron posted three wins.
In 2019-20, the two teams split the series as Akron posted a 79-76 victory at James A. Rhodes Arena (March 6) and KSU claimed the earlier contest 68-67 (Jan. 31) at the M.A.C Center. In 2018-19, Akron and Kent State split the series — Zips won at home 72-53 (Feb. 8) and Kent State won 68-65 in Kent (March 8). The team from the east entered 2018-19 season winning 2-of-3 contests, including a split in the 2017-18 season series (W 78-68 in Kent), (L 67-65 in Akron) and the 2017 MAC Championship game (W 70-65 in Cleveland). In addition, Akron won 2-of-3 games the following season (2012-13), winning on the road (71-67, Jan. 15) and falling at home (68-64, March 8) before winning its second consecutive semifinal matchup in the MAC Tournament (62-59, March 15). During that stretch, Akron won 5-of-6 games.

Akron looks to extend its eight-game winning streak today when it visits Kent State in this Friday night MAC clash.
The Zips haven’t lost since Dec. 30, when they fell 76-75 at Princeton. They’re 15-5 overall and 8-0 in league play, putting them at the top of the conference. Akron couldn’t miss when it throttled second-place Miami (Ohio) last Saturday. The Zips knocked down 15 triples and shot 44% from 3 in the 102-75 victory. They followed that up with an 80-70 win over Northern Illinois on Tuesday.
Kent State (13-7, 4-4) let a win get away when it lost 61-59 at Ohio last Friday. The Golden Flashes had plenty of opportunities down the stretch to pull away but couldn’t. The Flashes defeated Bowling Green by 18 on Tuesday and sit tied with Eastern Michigan for fourth place in the conference.
The last time these programs met was in last year’s MAC title game where Akron won 62-61. The Flashes will try to avenge that loss in what has become one of the best mid-major rivalries.

Akron at Kent State Prediction
I predict Kent State will get the close win here at home. I also predict this game will go under 144.5 points.
Akron has to lose a conference game at some point, right? Well, they don’t have to, but it’ll be very difficult for them to continue to remain unbeaten in league play.
This has a chance to be that regression spot for Akron and its hot offense.
Kent State is allowing just 64.2 points per game and, in conference games, has a defensive adjusted efficiency of 95.9, per KenPom. The Golden Flashes are allowing opponents to shoot 29% from deep in MAC play, which is the best mark in the league. Akron shoots 38% from the outside.
The Flashes aren’t the most efficient team — they shoot 40% from the field and 29% from 3 — but they make up for it with extra and extended possessions through turnovers and offensive rebounds. They force a turnover on 21.2% of opponents’ possessions and get an offensive board on 31% of possessions. Both rank first in the conference.
Those are the areas that can keep a potent offense like Akron from building a quick lead.
Senior Cli’ron Hornbeak leads the Flashes with 6.4 RPG, which ranks fourth in the conference. He’ll have a challenge against James Okonkwo, who is second in the MAC with 7.6 rebounds per game. Whoever wins the rebounding battle between these two could dictate who wins this game.
Six-foot-5 senior VonCameron Davis paces the Flashes with 15.9 PPG while Jalen Sullinger adds 12.2 points per night. Cian Medley has been playing well as of late and is coming off a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double against BGSU. I expect him to make some big plays.
The Zips have a pair of all-conference guards in Nate and Tavari Johnson. Nate is averaging 13.4 points, 4.7 boards, 3.4 assists, and two steals per game while Tavari averages 12.6 PPG and 4.2 APG. Akron has six guys that score at least 8.1 PPG.
Akron loves to play fast and has an adjusted tempo of 71.6. They will try and make this a track meet, and Kent State isn’t at its best in those situations. The Zips’ defense has been solid in MAC play and has an opponent field-goal percentage of 38%, the best in the conference. Their ADE of 92 is second-best in the MAC.
If this game were being played on a neutral court, I would give the edge to the Zips, but I think Kent State defends its home court and Akron regresses some offensively.
All of Akron’s five losses have come when it’s been an underdog. Kent State is 9-5 against the spread as a favorite and the total has gone over in only two of their wins.
College Basketball: Akron at Kent State Prediction, Odds & How To WatchIn a highly anticipated matchup, the Akron Zips will face off against the Kent State Golden Flashes in a thrilling college basketball game. Both teams have been playing at a high level this season, making this game a must-watch for fans of the sport.
The Akron Zips are coming off a strong performance in their last game, and they will look to carry that momentum into this matchup against their rivals. With a solid offense and a tough defense, the Zips are a force to be reckoned with on the court.
On the other hand, the Kent State Golden Flashes have also been playing well this season, with a strong record and some impressive wins under their belt. With a balanced attack and a stingy defense, the Golden Flashes will be a tough test for the Zips.
As for the odds, the game is expected to be a close one, with both teams having a good chance of coming out on top. However, the Akron Zips are slight favorites in this matchup, with a -3.5 point spread.
If you’re looking to catch this exciting game, you can watch it live on ESPN or stream it online through the ESPN app. So grab some snacks, settle in, and get ready for an intense game of college basketball between the Akron Zips and the Kent State Golden Flashes. AKRON, Ohio — Akron police said one man caused a lot of chaos in the Highland Square neighborhood for several hours on Monday.
Investigators believe Thomas Blanton, 37, brutally attacked a woman before barricading himself inside a building for more than four hours.
The ordeal forced a couple from their apartment and led to the closure of Portage Path Elementary School for the day.
According to Captain Michael Miller, Blanton attacked a woman he knows around 2:40 a.m. outside of a Highland Square business on West Market Street.
The woman went to an Akron hospital, and staff reported her injuries to police, Miller said.
“The suspect punched her multiple times in the face. We’re told she sustained multiple serious facial injuries,” Miller said.
After the assault, Blanton entered a former barber shop on the first floor of a building on Highland Avenue, according to investigators.
Kendra Strickland, who lives on the second floor directly above the old barber shop, first heard police around 4 a.m. yelling on a megaphone that the place was surrounded and for someone named “Thomas” to come outside.
About an hour later, a SWAT team urged Strickland and her boyfriend to leave their apartment.
“The came at 5 a.m. and told us to probably leave the building because there’s going to be tear gas to try to get the suspect out,” Strickland said.
The couple went outside and got into a police cruiser while they listened to the drama continue to unfold.
“They had said, ‘OK, we’re releasing the tear gas. OK, he’s down by the back door. We’re gonna see if we can get a shot,’” Strickland recalled.
After trying to negotiate with the suspect for several hours, police tossed tear gas into the building and knocked down a front door.
Blanton tried to get out the back door before returning to the front door and running into the long ramming device on the police department’s “community rescue vehicle,” which had breached the door, Miller explained.
Miller said officers wrestled a gun away from Blanton and arrested him more than four hours after the standoff started.
“It was a very, very volatile situation in that he came out with a firearm— very easily could be a different conversation we’re having,” Miller said
Blanton was taken to a hospital for injuries. According to Miller, he’s facing multiple charges, including felony strangulation, domestic violence and felonious assault.
The victim suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
For Strickland, the frustration continued hours after the incident was under control because she was unable to stay in her apartment.
“We can only run in briefly and then come back out because the tear gas is making us cry and cough,” she said.
Police said Blanton was involved in a similar standoff with Akron police that started on New Year’s Eve in 2015.
In that case, police tried to serve warrants for kidnapping, domestic violence and assault when Blanton barricaded himself inside a Seward Avenue apartment.
Nearly seven hours later— on New Year’s Day— he surrendered peacefully with the help of his family, police said.
According to court records, he was sentenced to five years in prison in 2016.
Following the Monday standoff in Highland Square, Strickland said she’s grateful things didn’t end even worse.
“They kept us safe, and so we thank them, but it’s still not a great way to start off the week,” Strickland said.
In a recent incident in Akron, a SWAT standoff came to an end after four hours, resulting in the arrest of a man accused of brutally beating a woman. The standoff began when police responded to a domestic violence call at a residence in the area. The suspect barricaded himself inside the home, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement. After several hours of negotiations, the SWAT team was able to peacefully resolve the situation and take the suspect into custody. The victim, who had suffered serious injuries in the assault, was taken to the hospital for treatment.
This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the importance of taking swift action to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable. The Akron Police Department is continuing to investigate the case and provide support to the victim.
If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, please seek help immediately. You can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) for assistance and resources. University of Akron gets almost $5.5M in federal grants for tech projects
WASHINGTON, D. C. – The University of Akron has received two federal grants worth almost $5.5 million from the U.S. Department of Energy for technology development projects, according to U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes, an Akron Democrat.
A project to develop a new recycling technology to blend and purify mixed plastics was awarded $3,143,289, Sykes’ office said. It aims to remove volatile organic compounds and pigments from mixed recycled plastics in order to produce reusable plastic films that can be used by consumer packaged goods companies.
A second project that aims to enhance the transmission and distribution capacity of existing alternating current lines was awarded $2,296,450, according to Sykes’ office. The proposed technology blends the alternating current lines with the high voltage direct current energy networks, and Sykes’ office says it will be applicable to electric transmission, distribution, and energy storage sectors.
Both grants came from the U.S. Department of Energy Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy. A statement from Sykes said the grants will help ensure the University of Akron continues to lead the way to a future in technology that creates regional jobs and opportunities.
“This recognition underscores the exceptional research and innovation taking place at The University of Akron,” said a statement from Suzanne Bausch, the university’s vice president of research and business engagement. “These projects not only enhance the University’s reputation as a hub for impactful research but also hold the potential to transform industries and improve lives.”
The University of Akron is proud to announce that it has received nearly $5.5 million in federal grants for various technology projects. These grants will allow the university to further its research and innovation in a number of key areas, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing. One of the projects that will benefit from this funding is the development of new cybersecurity tools to help protect sensitive information and prevent cyber attacks. Another project will focus on improving the efficiency and sustainability of advanced manufacturing processes through the use of cutting-edge technologies.
The University of Akron is committed to being at the forefront of technological advancements, and these grants will help support that mission. We are excited to see the impact that these projects will have on our campus and beyond, and we are grateful for the support of the federal government in making them possible.

My Ohio vs Akron College Basketball Betting Preview
Jeff Boals and John Groce are back on top of the Mid-American, as they should be.
The Bobs and Zips were projected as the conference’s two best teams in the preseason, and the duo is a combined 8-0 in conference play entering Friday’s monster MAC showdown.
Ohio leads the conference in 2-point shooting (63%) and 2-point shooting allowed (44%). Akron ranks second in both marks (59%, 44%). These are also the two best transition teams in the conference.
So, yeah. This one should be fun.
Akron’s transfer-laden roster plays mostly attack-and-kick, catch-and-shoot basketball, leading the MAC in 3-point rate (50%). The Zips have plenty of shooters, with Tavari Johnson, Isaiah Gray, Shammah Scott, Sharron Young and Amani Lyles all shooting better than 37% from deep.
The Zips are nothing if not deep, ranking in the top 25 nationally in bench minutes.
Unfortunately for them, Ohio boasts an elite catch-and-shoot denial defense, allowing fewer than 15 catch-and-shoot jumpers per game (19th nationally) and fewer than six unguarded ones (22nd nationally).
Also, I think Ohio is slightly better in transition denial than Akron, which will be crucial in this up-tempo matchup.
On the other end of the court, the Bobcats are an elite floor-spacing offense, leading the MAC in ShotQuality’s Spacing, Shot Selection and Shot Making metrics.
They have fantastic guard play behind Jackson Paveletzke and Shereef Mitchell, and AJ Clayton’s versatility as a stretch five gives Ohio all sorts of options out of pick-and-pop and short-roll actions.
But Akron’s ball-screen coverage is elite (.78 PPP allowed, 88th percentile), and the Zips have an excellent 3-point defense (16th nationally in ShotQuality’s Low-Quality 3s Allowed metric).
I can’t get an excellent feel for this matchup. I actually think both defenses have the schematic edge, but the pace of this game could be crazy, so I’m uncertain about the total.
All that said, there’s one glaring stat I can’t get out of my head.
Ohio is 1-8 ATS away from home this year. It beat Central Michigan and Buffalo on the road recently in conference play, but it lost the prior four true road opportunities by double-digits and went 1-2 in its neutral-court non-conference MTE.
The Bobcats rank 324th nationally in Haslametrics Away-From-Home metrics. They turn into pumpkins on the road.
Meanwhile, Akron has a surprisingly strong home-court advantage.
So, if I had to, I think I’d prefer to lay the points with the Zips than anything else.
But I’ll likely stay away from this one.
Ohio vs Akron Predictions, Picks, Odds — 1/17In this highly anticipated matchup between Ohio and Akron on January 17th, both teams will be looking to secure a crucial win in conference play. Ohio comes into the game with a 9-7 overall record, while Akron sits at 11-4.
The Bobcats have been led by the dynamic duo of Jason Preston and Ben Vander Plas, who have been averaging a combined 33 points per game. Their offensive firepower will be key in trying to overcome Akron’s stout defense, which is holding opponents to just 67 points per game.
On the other hand, Akron will look to continue their strong play behind the scoring of Loren Cristian Jackson, who is averaging 21 points per game. The Zips will rely on their balanced attack and defensive intensity to try and shut down Ohio’s high-scoring offense.
In terms of predictions, this game is shaping up to be a close and competitive contest. With both teams having strong offensive capabilities and solid defenses, it could come down to which team can execute down the stretch.
As for picks, I believe that Ohio will come out on top in a tight game, as they have shown the ability to score in bunches and have a knack for making big plays when it matters most.
The odds for this game are likely to be close, but I would lean towards taking Ohio with the points in what should be a thrilling matchup between these two conference rivals. Be sure to tune in on January 17th to see who comes out on top in this exciting showdown.

These MAC teams haven’t faced each other since last season when the Zips came from behind in the second half for a 65-62 victory. More recently, Akron has defeated all four MAC foes this season, while Ohio is also off to a perfect start in MAC play and has won six straight overall.
Tipoff from James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron is set for 6 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network. Why Ohio can cover
The Bobcats have covered the spread in each of their last two games, an 86-71 victory against Ball State and a convincing 108-70 win against Northern Illinois. They have also won each of their last two in-conference road games, which should give them a boost heading into a building they haven’t claimed victory in since 2022.
Ohio ranks second in the conference in field goal percentage (48.2) and 3-point percentage (36.8) as well as blocks per game (3.8). Senior forward AJ Clayton leads players on both teams with 16.8 points per game and leads the Bobcats with 6.2 rebounds. He put up 31 points and shot 90% from beyond the arc against Northern Illinois, and Ohio will need a similar performance from him if they want to win and cover the spread on Friday. See which team to pick here.
Why Akron can cover
The Zips are 7-7-0 ATS this season and have covered in two of their last three games, being listed as the favorite each time. Akron has also put up over 70 points in five straight games, and they lead the conference in 3-point shots made (11.4) and total rebounds (40.6). It doesn’t hurt, either, that the Zips have defeated the Bobcats in each of the last three meetings at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Akron’s guard-heavy offense is lead by junior Nate Johnson, who is averaging 12.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.8 steals per night for the Zips. Senior forward James Okonkwo rounds out Akron’s attack with a team-leading 8.2 rebounds, while also contributing 7.7 points and 1.1 blocks per game this season. See which team to pick here.
