Alabama Power drilling leaves mountain community without water

Some residents of Vandiver, a small, mountainous community just east of Birmingham, are now without water, after a project to install fiber cable underground hit the aquifer supplying their wells.

“They’re not sure it can be fixed, and that’s what scares us all,” said Tommy Fish, a resident whose well has been impacted.

Residents in Shelby County filed suit to stop the project last week, but the judge has ordered that the drilling continue.

Alabama Power hired R.E.M. Directional to drill in Coosa Mountain in the northern end of Shelby County and install fiber cable on their existing rights-of-way.

Alyson Tucker, a spokesperson for Alabama Power, said in an email to AL.com that the drilling project is “a vital component to enhancing reliability and service to our customers.”

Fish, one of three plaintiffs in the lawsuit, said residents began to notice issues with their wells around three weeks ago. After a few days of wondering, Fish and another resident traveled to the drilling site, where he said members of the crew said they had previously experienced a “blowout” and water had begun gushing from where they were drilling.

Residents were not informed about the incident prior to this, Fish said.

“About two weeks ago, we learned some residents near Vandiver served by private water wells were experiencing issues with their water source,” Tucker said in an email. “We have been actively communicating with the impacted residents and providing assistance as needed.”

An attorney for R.E.M. Directional did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

Fish and the other residents of the community rely on private wells for their water. They’re too far away to connect to a utility’s drinking water system. Currently, eight wells belonging to five homeowners are completely dry, he said, though Fish’s has not completely dried up.

As drilling continues, water will continue to pour out of the aquifer, he said. More residents could be affected as the aquifer continues to lose water.

“As the water table continues to lower, it will affect more people,” Fish said. “It’s growing.”

After Fish and two other residents filed a complaint against R.E.M., Shelby County Circuit Court Judge Patrick Kennedy entered a temporary restraining order on Friday, halting drilling. Alabama Power joined the suit later as an intervenor.

But on Tuesday, Kennedy ordered drilling to resume, on a 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week schedule, in order to complete the project as quickly as possible. Alabama Power will also have to provide to the judge a daily status report, and another hearing will be held on Feb. 18.

Bruce Romeo, an attorney representing Fish and the other plaintiffs, said the remaining drilling could take anywhere from three days to three weeks.

In the meantime, Alabama Power and R.E.M. have provided water and other assistance to people whose wells have been affected. That must continue, Kennedy ruled.

Romeo said they would have been in favor of hiring a hydrogeologist to consult prior to resuming drilling. Since that could take weeks or even months, and with no other alternative, the judge opted to allow operations to resume.

Alabama Power and R.E.M. had argued that the best way to address the water issue is to complete the project as quickly as possible, Romeo said.

“Alabama Power is working around the clock to complete the project as quickly as possible,” Tucker said. “Upon completion, we can fully assess any impacted wells and promptly resolve the matter. Alabama Power remains committed to the impacted residents, our customers and communities, and will remain in contact with those affected by this work.”

But the long-term effects to the aquifer are unknown. Fish said there’s no guarantee that Alabama Power and R.E.M. can repair the aquifer. Romeo said it’s also not known if the aquifer can be completely restored or if contamination is a concern.

“We’ll have to see first if they can fix this,” Romeo said. “I’m a little skeptical…We’re very much in the infancy of this.”

And it extends beyond water, Fish said: losing the aquifer could destabilize the ground, which could in turn jeopardize people’s homes.

Above all, Fish said, it’s the uncertainty that frightens residents. Not having access to water jeopardizes the homes they worked so hard for.

“[The provided water] is great for those who haven’t had water, but looking down the road, that’s what worries us,” Fish said. “Are we going to have water tanks forever?”

Recently, the residents of a mountain community in Alabama have been left without water due to the drilling activities of Alabama Power. This has caused a major inconvenience for the residents, who rely on the water supply for their everyday needs.

The drilling activities have disrupted the underground water sources, leading to a decrease in water pressure and ultimately leaving the community without water. Residents have been forced to find alternative sources of water, such as purchasing bottled water or using water from nearby streams.

The situation has sparked outrage among the residents, who feel that Alabama Power should be held accountable for the disruption to their water supply. Many are calling for the company to take immediate action to rectify the situation and ensure that the community has access to clean and reliable water.

In response to the backlash, Alabama Power has stated that they are working to address the issue and restore water to the community as soon as possible. However, many residents remain skeptical and are demanding more transparency and accountability from the company.

Overall, the situation serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of industrial activities on local communities and the importance of ensuring that companies prioritize the well-being of residents in their operations.

  • College basketball rankings: Alabama up to No. 3, Tennessee makes big jump in AP Top 25

Alabama moved up one spot in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll Monday from No. 4 to No. 3 after a perfect week in SEC play that included a road win over No. 14 Mississippi State and a home win over Georgia to improve to 8-1 in conference play. The Crimson Tide’s rise was aided by a loss by Iowa State, which had been ranked No. 3 for two consecutive weeks, after it stumbled twice this week in Big 12 play with losses to Arizona and Kansas State and fell to No. 8.

Alabama began the season ranked No. 2 and fell in the poll each of the first four weeks of the regular season to as far as No. 10 after a 6-2 start to the season that included losses to Purdue and Oregon. Since December, however, it has won 13 of its last 14 games led by the highest-scoring offense in college basketball.

Bama’s rise has been one of the biggest storylines in the SEC this season, overshadowed only by rival Auburn’s dominance all season. Auburn remained at No. 1 in the AP poll Monday for a fourth consecutive week and is the unanimous No. 1 for a third consecutive week after earning all 62 first-place votes.

Duke, on the heels of an 87-70 win over rival North Carolina over the weekend, remained at No. 2 for a third consecutive week, extending its stay in the top five to nine weeks. The Blue Devils did not pick off any first-place votes from the No. 1 Tigers but earned a season-high 1,488 points in the poll, up from 1,484 a week ago.

KU falls after biggest blown lead

Kansas is tracking toward a finish outside of the top three in its conference in back to back seasons for the first time in 40-plus years — after starting both last season and this season as the preseason No. 1. It fell in the poll this week five spots to No. 16, its lowest ranking of the season, after a 1-1 week in which it squeezed out a close home win over UCF and fell on the road 81-70 at Baylor — after gagging away a 21-point lead. The 21-point blown lead is the program’s largest on record.

Texas Tech, Maryland make big moves

The two biggest risers in the AP poll this week were Texas Tech, which moved from No. 22 to No. 13, and Maryland, which went from unranked to No. 18. It’s the highest ranking for Texas Tech since the final AP poll in 2021-22. It’s Maryland’s first appearance in the poll since the 2022-23 season and highest ranking since climbing to No. 13 in Week 5 that season.

    How about Missouri?

Don’t let Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida distract you from brilliance elsewhere in the SEC. The league also has five more ranked teams including Missouri, which moved up to No. 15 this week. It marks the highest ranking for a Missouri basketball team in the AP poll this late in the season since 2011-12.

In the latest AP Top 25 rankings for college basketball, Alabama has climbed up to No. 3, while Tennessee has made a big jump as well. The Crimson Tide have been on a hot streak, with impressive wins over top-ranked teams, propelling them to one of the top spots in the nation.

Meanwhile, the Volunteers have also been making noise in the rankings, moving up significantly due to their strong performances on the court. With a talented roster and a winning mentality, Tennessee is proving to be a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.

As the season continues, it will be interesting to see how these teams fare against tough competition and if they can maintain their rankings in the AP Top 25. Stay tuned for more updates on college basketball rankings and the exciting matchups ahead.

  • Alabama football hiring Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator

Kalen DeBoer is getting the band back together. Alabama football is bringing on Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator, reuniting DeBoer with the man who helped him bring Washington to the national championship game in 2023.

Alabama announced the news Sunday through its Yea Alabama NIL collective. DeBoer had not ruled out the possibility when asked about it during a media availability at the Senior Bowl.

When DeBoer left the Huskies to join Alabama after Nick Saban retired in January of 2024, Grubb initially followed. However, he then decided to remain in Seattle, taking the OC job with the NFL’s Seahawks.

After one season, Grubb was fired by the Seahawks. That move opened the door to reunite with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa.

After Grubb headed back to Seattle, Nick Sheridan was promoted to Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The release did not mention his future.

Grubb first worked for DeBoer at Sioux Falls in 2007. The two also worked together at Eastern Michigan and Fresno State, before going to Washington in 2022.

Now back in Tuscaloosa, in a job he first interviewed for ahead of the 2023 season, when Saban was still in charge, Grubb will have work to do. Alabama’s offense was inconsistent throughout DeBoer’s first season, leading to the Crimson Tide’s first season with less than 10 wins since 2007.

He’ll immediately have a quarterback battle on his hands, with Jalen Milroe’s departure for the NFL Draft. Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell will be the major players in the QB room this offseason

  • Alabama to hire Ryan Grubb as new offensive coordinator

Ryan Grubb is finally headed to Alabama. According to a report from the University of Alabama’s collective, the Crimson Tide is hiring Grubb as its next offensive coordinator.

Grubb, a longtime assistant of Kalen DeBoer, was set to follow the head coach to Alabama last year before taking the offensive coordinator job at Seattle. Grubb served as DeBoer’s offensive coordinator at Fresno State (2020-21) and Washington (2022-23). Grubb also worked under DeBoer at Sioux Falls, serving as a run-game coordinator as well as an offensive line coach. The two also worked together at Eastern Michigan from 2014-2016 when DeBoer served as the offensive coordinator and Grubb coached the offensive line.

“We go way back,” DeBoer said when asked about Grubb during a Senior Bowl appearance in Mobile, Alabama last week. “Great friend of mine. Think the world of him as a football coach, obviously as a person too. And so, I know he’s working through his process, just kind of after what last season brought, so just gotta see what he does there and (I’m) here for him whenever he needs me. That’s always going to be the case.”

The University of Alabama is set to hire Ryan Grubb as its new offensive coordinator, according to sources close to the program. Grubb, who has been serving as the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Louisiana-Lafayette, is expected to bring his innovative offensive schemes to the Crimson Tide.

Under Grubb’s leadership, Louisiana-Lafayette’s offense ranked among the top in the country, averaging over 40 points per game. His ability to develop quarterbacks and create explosive plays down the field has caught the attention of Alabama head coach Nick Saban, who is excited to see what Grubb can bring to the table.

With the departure of former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien to the NFL, Grubb’s hiring is seen as a crucial move to help maintain Alabama’s offensive prowess. Fans are eager to see how Grubb’s offensive strategies will mesh with the talented roster of players at Alabama and are hopeful that he can help lead the team to continued success in the upcoming season.

  • How Kalen DeBoer expects Ryan Williams to improve for Alabama football in 2025

Ryan Williams won’t be 17 anymore when the 2025 Alabama football season begins. The Crimson Tide wide receiver, the most famous minor in college football during his true freshman year, will be facing enormous expectations as a sophomore, with a new quarterback and facing defenses that have plenty of tape on him.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday while attending a Senior Bowl practice in Mobile, Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer said he was optimistic about Williams getting even better with age.

“I know that he’s got much higher goals than what he accomplished this year,” DeBoer said. “And that’s individually and as a team. I’m really excited about him taking the next steps as a leader now. He’s gonna take care of his business and do what he needs to do, and we’re gonna be there to help him refine the things that are gonna make him the best of the best.”

Williams finished 2024 with 48 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. His best games came early in the season, and he was especially productive against Georgia, going for 177 receiving yards and the game-winning touchdown.

The Saraland native was a finalist for the Shaun Alexander Award, which goes to the nation’s top freshman.

“He’s a team player through and through,” DeBoer said. “We saw that all season long. Him and Germ(ie Bernard) coming back as the leaders of the receiving core, I’m excited about what they bring from a mindset. When your best players are your best people and highest-character guys, it’s exciting what it can become, so we have that at the receiving core.”

The Alabama receiver room will also have some newcomers for the 2025 season. Isaiah Horton transferred in from Miami, and the most recent recruiting class includes Lotzier Brooks and Derek Meadows.

In addition, Cole Adams and Jalen Hale are set to return from injury, and Jaylen Mbakwe was practicing as a wideout ahead of the ReliaQuest Bowl, moving over from defensive back.

“I really like the way that that group is coming along under (Williams and Bernard’s) guidance,” DeBoer said.

Alabama’s A-Day spring game is scheduled for April 12. The Crimson Tide will open the 2025 regular season Aug. 30 at Florida State.

Kalen DeBoer, the head coach of Alabama football, has high expectations for quarterback Ryan Williams as they head into the 2025 season. Williams, a talented athlete with a strong arm and quick decision-making skills, has already shown great potential on the field. However, DeBoer believes there is still room for improvement and is optimistic about what Williams can bring to the team in the upcoming season.

One area where DeBoer expects Williams to excel is in his accuracy and consistency. While Williams has shown flashes of brilliance in his passing game, DeBoer wants to see him become more precise in his throws and more reliable in his decision-making. By working on his mechanics and honing his skills in practice, DeBoer believes Williams can become a top-tier quarterback in the college football landscape.

Additionally, DeBoer is looking for Williams to improve his leadership skills and become a more vocal presence on the field. As the quarterback, Williams is not only responsible for making plays but also for rallying his teammates and motivating them to perform at their best. DeBoer wants to see Williams take charge and become a true leader for the team, both on and off the field.

Overall, DeBoer has high hopes for Williams in the 2025 season and believes that with hard work and dedication, he can become a standout player for Alabama football. By focusing on his accuracy, consistency, and leadership skills, Williams has the potential to lead the team to great success in the upcoming season. Alabama fans can look forward to seeing Williams continue to grow and develop as a player under the guidance of Coach DeBoer.
