  • Winter weather alerts issued for Upstate NY for more snow, squalls

Syracuse, N.Y. — Most of Upstate New York will be under winter weather alerts tonight and Wednesday as another storm system delivers squalls and lake effect snow.

The hardest-hit areas are likely to be the Tug Hill Plateau and the Adirondacks, where another foot or more could fall tonight through Friday morning amid wind gusts up to 35 mph, the National Weather Service said. A winter storm warning, the highest level of alert, is in effect there from tonight through 1 a.m. Thursday.

Central New York could see 4 to 9 inches tonight and early Wednesday morning as a clipper system sweeps through from southwest to northeast.

The good news for commuters is that most of the snow is expected to fall from 7 tonight to 4 a.m. Wednesday.

The round of snow will be kicked off tonight by a clipper system, a fast-moving storm that emerges from the Canadian plains and barrels through the Great Lakes region.

Another line of snow squalls is possible on Wednesday. Unlike the squalls that happened overnight, these will likely hit during the day. Like thunderstorms, squalls get more intense during the warmest parts of the day.

“These snow squalls have the potential to be more widespread and stronger,” the weather service said.

The departure of the squall line will usher in some cold air across the Great Lakes, bringing a few inches of lake effect snow on Thursday.

And if that’s not enough, another system moving in from the southeast might bring a wintry mix and the chance for more lake effect snow Friday. That forecast remains murky right now.

January has so far been snowier than average. Syracuse has had 34.5 inches of snow as of Monday, more than the long-term average of 29.6 inches through Jan. 27.

This month has been the snowiest January in seven years.

Winter weather alerts in Upstate New York

Most of Upstate New York is under winter weather alerts from tonight into Thursday. Purple denotes a winter weather advisory for several inches of snow. Green represents a winter storm watch, for 6 to 11 inches of snow. Pink is a winter storm warning, for heavy snow and high winds.National Weather Service

Winter weather alerts have been issued for Upstate New York as more snow and squalls are expected to impact the region. The National Weather Service has warned residents to be prepared for hazardous driving conditions and reduced visibility as the winter weather moves in.

With several inches of snow expected to fall in the coming days, it is important for residents to stay informed and take precautions to ensure their safety. Make sure to check local weather updates and road conditions before heading out, and be prepared for possible delays and closures.

Remember to drive slowly and carefully in snowy and icy conditions, and give yourself extra time to reach your destination. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle, such as blankets, water, and snacks, in case you get stranded.

Stay safe and stay warm during this winter weather alert in Upstate New York. And as always, remember to check on your neighbors, especially those who may need extra assistance during severe weather conditions.

  • Alerts issued for flash flooding, high winds from approaching storm system

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Several severe weather alerts will be taking effect as a strong winter storms system approaches Hawaii.

The HNN First Alert Weather Team earlier declared a First Alert Weather Day statewide from Wednesday night through Friday morning.

The National Weather Service says a Flood Watch will be in effect for all main Hawaiian islands from Wednesday evening through Friday morning.

A High Wind Watch will also take effect statewide Wednesday evening through late Thursday night for strong southwest winds of 20 to 35 miles per hour with gusts near 55 miles per hour.

The strongest winds are expected over windward and mauka areas of Kauai and Oahu. However, parts of Maui County and Hawaii Island may also see strong and potentially damaging winds.

A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect from late Wednesday night through Friday morning for the summits of Haleakala, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa.

Periods of snow and mixed precipitation will be possible, with the potential of snow accumulations of up to ten inches for Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, and up to four inches for the summit area of Haleakala.

A light glaze of ice will also be possible on roads and other surfaces as temperatures drop below freezing.

The storm system may also impact mariners in waters around Kauai, where a Gale Watch will be posted from Wednesday evening through Thursday afternoon. There’s a chance for strong winds causing hazardous seas that can capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility.

The severe weather conditions are expected from the strong winter low pressure system that is forecast to develop west of the state on Wednesday and then pass to the north of Kauai on Thursday, with an associated cold front bringing a chance of heavy showers and thunderstorms over the western end of the state starting Wednesday evening.

  • Carolina snow, cold alerts too

WATCH: Carolina snow, cold alerts too

ALL RIGHT, LET’S TALK ABOUT THIS WEATHER NOW. I’M GETTING SICK OF USING THIS GRAPHIC BEHIND US. REMEMBER WHEN WE WENT A THOUSAND DAYS WITHOUT ANY SNOW OR MEASURABLE SNOW? I REMEMBER WELL, REMEMBER TOO. I REMEMBER THE LAST TIME IT SNOWED. PRIOR TO ALL THAT WE’VE GOTTEN SO FAR IN JANUARY. I DON’T THINK I’M ALLOWED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE COLD WEATHER ANYMORE. WELL, I DON’T KNOW. A LOT OF FOLKS ARE DEFINITELY TALKING ABOUT THE COLD WEATHER AND ALSO ABOUT THE SNOW THAT IS FLYING AROUND IN THE PIEDMONT TRIAD. A VERY FINE POWDERY SNOW, BUT IT IS PILING UP. WE ARE STARTING TO GET SOME PARKING LOTS COVERED. THERE’S THE VIEW OVER GRAHAM. AS YOU CAN SEE, IT LOOKS LIKE SNOW ALL DAY LONG. LET’S TALK ABOUT. THIS IS A BIG WINTER STORM ACROSS THE DEEP SOUTH. WE KNEW THAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN. PLACES THAT USUALLY DON’T SEE SNOW ARE BEING INUNDATED WITH SOME REAL HIGH SNOWFALL TOTALS. WE’RE ALSO WATCHING IN THE TRIAD FOR THE POTENTIAL OF THAT LIGHT COATING THAT COULD IMPACT OUR AND THEN THE COLDER TEMPERATURES THAT WE’VE GOT, WE’VE GOT COLD ALERTS THAT ARE OUT FOR OUR AREA. MOST OF THE SNOW WITH THIS STORM SYSTEM IS ACROSS THE EASTERN PART OF NORTH AND SOUTH CAROLINA, WHICH IS A SENTENCE THAT I DON’T OFTEN SAY HERE. YEAH, THIS IS PRETTY RARE SETUP ACROSS THE AREA. AND YEAH, THE IMPACTS ARE GOING TO BE HIGHEST ALONG THE COAST AS WELL. WE DO EXPECT AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT OF AN IMPACT IN THE PIEDMONT TRIAD. WE’RE SEEING IT OUT THERE RIGHT NOW WITH SOME OF THAT POWDERY SNOW MAKING IT DOWN TO THE GROUND THROUGH SOME VERY DRY AIR. WE’RE NOT UNDER AN ADVISORY PER SE, BECAUSE THE AMOUNTS ARE GOING TO BE VERY LIGHT ACROSS OUR AREA, BUT THERE’S A WINTER STORM WARNING OUT TO THE EAST, AND THAT WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY WAS ACTUALLY PUSHED A LITTLE FARTHER WEST AS WE SAW A LITTLE BIT OF A SHIFT IN THE TRACK OVERNIGHT EARLY THIS MORNING. AND IT DOES INCLUDE SOME OF THE COUNTIES ACROSS CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA, INCLUDING OUR COUNTY HERE IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, WHERE TROY IS. THAT’S WHERE WE EXPECT TO SEE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT OF SNOWS IN OUR TELEVISION AUDIENCE. SO AROUND AN INCH OR SO POSSIBLE IN THOSE COMMUNITIES, LIGHTER AMOUNTS, THOUGH MAYBE A HALF OF AN INCH, QUARTER OF AN INCH STILL POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF THE TRIAD. NOW THAT WE’RE SEEING THAT SNOW ACTUALLY BREAK THROUGH THE DRY AIR, THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS WE WERE NOT SURE WAS GOING TO HAPPEN ACROSS OUR AREA. IT WILL BE STREAKY, IT WILL BE SPOTTY, IT WILL BE SHORT LIVED. NOW, BETWEEN NOW, I SHOULD SAY AT ABOUT 10:00. THAT’S THE WINDOW FOR SOME SNOW. BUT THAT DRY SNOW WILL STICK AND THAT COULD CREATE THOSE TRAVEL HAZARDS OUT THERE. THAT’S WHY WE DO HAVE THAT I-85 CORRIDOR IN THAT IMPACT ZONE. AGAIN, THERE’S SOME VERY LIGHT, FLUFFY SNOW COMING DOWN RIGHT NOW ACROSS THE TRIAD. IT’S A LITTLE MORE SIGNIFICANT FARTHER TO THE SOUTH AND TO THE EAST. EVERYBODY IS COLD WITH TEMPERATURES IN THE TEENS AND 20S. WE WERE 15 THIS MORNING IN GREENSBORO AND HIGHS ONLY IN THE LOW 20S. WE’RE CONCERNED ABOUT THE COLD OVERNIGHT WITH THAT EXTREME COLD WARNING FOR THE MOUNTAINS, FOR WIND CHILL VALUES AS LOW AS 15 BELOW. IN OUR COLD WEATHER ADVISORY ZONE, WE’RE TALKING ABOUT WIND CHILL VALUES THAT COULD GET DOWN BELOW ZERO IN THE FOOTHILLS AND CLOSE TO ZERO IN THE TRIAD. SO YOU LOOK AT FORECAST WIND CHILLS AS WE GO THROUGH THE OVERNIGHT. THIS IS TOMORROW MORNING. WHAT IT WILL FEEL LIKE IF YOU DO STEP OUTDOORS. OF COURSE, THAT COLD IS ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE SOUTH AND THEY ARE SEEING THE SNOW PILING UP AND MORE THAN A FOOT NOW IN NEW ORLEANS. AND THAT’S GOING TO TRACK RIGHT ALONG OUR COASTLINE, WHERE SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW ARE IN THE FORECAST FOR COASTAL COMMUNITIES, AS WELL AS THAT I-95 CORRIDOR. SO YOU WATCH THE SNOW HERE AS WE GO THROUGH THE NIGHTTIME HOURS. AGAIN, MOST OF IT IS JUST TO OUR EAST. AND YES, MOST SIGNIFICANTLY, GOING TO IMPACT OUR BEACHES AS WELL AS PLACES LIKE FAYETTEVILLE AND RALEIGH. AS FOR SNOWFALL PILING UP, MOST SIGNIFICANT AGAIN TO THE SOUTHEAST COULD SEE A LITTLE BIT HERE ACROSS THE PIEDMONT TRIAD. SO KEEP THAT IN MIND EARLY TOMORROW MORNING. 12 WITH FEELS-LIKE TEMPERATURE CLOSE TO ONE TOMORROW AFTERNOON. 29 WE’VE GOT LIGHT NORTHEAST BREEZES. WE’VE GOT SUNSHINE IN THE FORECAST FOR THE FOOTHILLS. MORNING TEMPERATURE IS NINE. FEELS LIKE ZERO. AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 20S. WINDS ARE A LITTLE LIGHTER, SO NOT AS MUCH OF A WIND CHILL ISSUE IN THE AFTERNOON. LOTS OF SUN IN THE MOUNTAINS, FIVE IN THE MORNING AND BELOW ZERO FOR FEELS LIKE A HIGH OF 22. TOMORROW AFTERNOON FEELS LIKE TEMPERATURES IN THE TEENS. HERE’S YOUR SEVEN DAY FORECAST. WE’RE GOING TO WARM UP. WE JUST HAVE TO WAIT THIS ONE OUT FOLKS. WE’RE IN THE TEENS AGAIN THURSDAY MORNING, BUT GET ABOVE FREEZING B

  • Winter Weather Alerts will look different going into this weekend

The National Weather Service has changed its winter weather alerts. This went into effect back in October of last year, but we haven’t seen any of these alerts issued yet. With this incoming arctic blast, temperatures will likely drop below zero, and we could see these brand new alerts issued.

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

    News 5

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

One of the main changes was the consolidation of wind chill alerts. You will now just see extreme cold alerts. Wind chill watches/warnings/advisories are no longer going to be issued because cold temperatures can be dangerous with or without the wind. The new advisory that we could see be issued this weekend is the cold weather advisory. With our temperatures dropping below zero into the teens we could very well see these advisories issued.

When a cold weather advisory is issued, apparent temperatures are between -18 and -24. Our forecast currently has our lows getting around -13 degrees for Colorado Springs with apparent temperatures making it feel like the negative 20s, but these temperatures will fluctuate as we get closer to the weekend. If apparent temperatures were to get down to -25 degrees or lower, this is when an extreme cold alert would be issued. Pets and children will need to stay inside and are prone to frostbite and hypothermia.

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

    News 5

    Winter Weather Alert Changes

The other change that NWS made we won’t see until later this year. Hard freeze alerts will be combined into a freeze alert. These are more so issued for any gardeners or ranchers in the area. Hard freezes indicated the end of the growing season. The meteorologists at NWS will still indicate in the description of the alert if this is a hard freeze or not. When freeze alerts are issued you also want to protect any exposed pipes around your home.

The First Alert 5 Weather team will be sure to update with any new information throughout this weekend.

As we head into the weekend, it’s important to stay informed about any winter weather alerts that may be in effect. However, this weekend, those alerts may look a bit different than what we are used to.

With the advancement of technology and the ability to receive alerts on our phones and devices, we may see more personalized and targeted alerts based on our location. This means that you may receive alerts specific to your area, rather than a general alert for the entire region.

Additionally, with the increasing accuracy of weather forecasting, alerts may be issued further in advance, giving you more time to prepare and plan accordingly. This could help minimize any disruptions caused by severe weather.

So as we prepare for the weekend, be sure to stay tuned to your local news sources and weather apps for the most up-to-date information on any winter weather alerts that may be in effect. Stay safe and stay informed!

  • 60 million under weather alerts as winter storm aims for Plains to mid-Atlantic

60 million under weather alerts as winter storm aims for Plains to mid-Atlantic

Around 60 million people are under weather alerts from the Plains to the mid-Atlantic as a winter storm threatens to slam the regions with heavy snow and crippling ice.

The developing low-pressure system is forecast to affect the regions for the next three days, and includes cities such as Cincinnati, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Omaha, St. Louis and Indianapolis.

The Rocky Mountains and the central and northern Plains will be hit by heavy snow, strong winds and freezing rain. Cities expected to be affected include Wichita, Kansas; Kansas City; and Omaha, Nebraska. Blizzard-like conditions are possible due to the combination of heavy snow and strong wind gusts.

“A wintry mix could start as early as this afternoon and transition to snow Sunday afternoon,” the National Weather Service field office in Kansas City said on X. “Wind gusts around 35-40 mph on Sunday could yield possible blizzard conditions.”

By Sunday morning, the system will shift over the central Plains, bringing heavy snow and ice from Kansas through the mid-Mississippi Valley. The storm system will gradually shift east through the day, with the biggest impacts in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky.

Sunday will also bring a severe weather risk across the lower Mississippi Valley, putting 7 million people at risk for tornadoes, damaging wind and hail in cities including Jackson, Mississippi; and Baton Rouge, Shreveport and Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Snow will arrive in the mid-Atlantic and central Appalachians overnight into Monday morning. These showers will linger through Monday, ending by Tuesday morning as the system moves offshore. Areas forecast to be affected Monday include Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Kansas, Missouri and Illinois are forecast to receive the highest snowfall totals of anywhere, with 9 to 16 inches. A general 4 to 9 inches of snowfall will stretch from parts of Illinois to the mid-Atlantic, with higher accumulations possible in parts of the central Appalachians.

Significant icing will stretch from Kansas through Virginia, where power outages, tree damage and impossible travel conditions can be expected. Generally, totals will range from 0.1 to 0.4 inches of ice, with extreme amounts of 0.5 to 0.75 inches possible in parts of Missouri, southern Illinois and Kentucky.

In the wake of this system, a significant drop in temperatures is anticipated for the eastern two-thirds of the country. Highs will drop 10 to 25 degrees below average starting Sunday and lasting through Friday. Highs will range from the single digits and teens across the Plains and Midwest, and in the 20s to 30s in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

The most extreme temperatures will be in the northern Plains, where overnight lows will dip as low as minus 20, with wind chill values around minus 40. Cold weather advisories are in place from eastern Montana through Minnesota.

Get ready, because a massive winter storm is heading towards the Plains and mid-Atlantic regions, putting a staggering 60 million people under weather alerts. This storm is expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds, and frigid temperatures, making travel treacherous and potentially causing power outages.

Residents in states such as Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York should prepare for the worst as this powerful storm makes its way across the country. A weekend cool down with high country wind alerts

PHOENIX — After we broke a record high and hit the 80s on Friday, a weekend cool down is in store!

The area of high pressure that’s kept us warm with stagnant air is breaking down this weekend as a cold front sweeps through the state today. This storm will not bring any rain or snow to the state but it will bring some cooler air and windy conditions along and north of the Rim.

A wind advisory is in effect for portions of Apache and Navajo Counties today from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Gust could reach 40-50 mph.

Back in the Valley, overnight lows will continue to drop into the mid to upper 40s over the next few days, so our mornings will stay nice and cool.

Afternoon highs will hit the low 70s for the weekend and the start of the new week.

Fine particle pollution (dust and smoke) is lingering over the Valley. The worst of it will impact us in the morning hours, with air quality gradually improving throughout the day.

A Burn Ban will be back in effect Sunday across Maricopa County, so burning wood in fireplaces, stoves, and outdoor firepits will be prohibited.

A second storm midweek could cool temperatures even closer to seasonable for the second half of the week with a chance for rain in the Valley and snow in the high country.

Although we will see a cool-off for the upcoming week, temperatures will remain a few degrees above average for this time of the year and above-average temperatures will likely remain in the forecast overall through the month of January and into spring.

As the weekend approaches, it’s time to start planning how to unwind and relax after a long week. One way to cool down and enjoy some time outdoors is to head to the high country for some fresh mountain air. However, it’s important to be aware of any high country wind alerts that may be in effect.

High country wind alerts are issued when strong gusts of wind are expected in mountainous areas. These alerts can impact outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and picnicking, so it’s important to stay informed and take precautions.

If you’re planning a weekend getaway to the high country, make sure to check the weather forecast and any wind alerts that may be in effect. Be prepared by packing extra layers, securing your tent or campsite, and avoiding areas with high wind exposure.

Despite the potential for high winds, a weekend in the high country can still be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience. Take in the stunning views, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and enjoy some quality time with nature. Just remember to stay safe and be mindful of any wind alerts that may be in effect.
