Tampa Bay Rays acquire RHP Alex Faedo from Detroit Tigers
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-hander Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor league catcher Enderson Delgado and cash on Monday.
The Tigers designated Faedo, 29, for assignment last week after signing Tommy Kahnle.
Faedo, a Tampa native, went 5-3 with a 3.61 ERA in 37 games (six starts) for the Tigers in 2024. He’s 8-13 with a 4.51 ERA in 64 career games (30 starts) for the Tigers, who drafted him in the first round (No. 18 overall) of the 2017 draft.
Delgado, 20, batted .259 with four home runs and 30 RBIs between stints in rookie ball and Class-A Charleston in 2024.
The Rays announced that infielder Osleivis Basabe was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
The Tampa Bay Rays have made a big move to bolster their pitching staff by acquiring right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers.Faedo, 25, was a first-round pick (18th overall) by the Tigers in the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of Florida. He has shown promise in the minor leagues, posting a 3.90 ERA with 305 strikeouts in 297 innings pitched.
The Rays are hoping that Faedo can provide some much-needed depth to their rotation or bullpen as they look to make a playoff push in the highly competitive American League East.
Stay tuned for more updates on this trade and how Faedo will fit into the Rays’ plans for the rest of the season.

Tigers Trade Right-Handed Pitcher Alex Faedo to the Rays
After coming to terms on a deal with Tommy Kahnle (not to mention Jack Flaherty last night), the Detroit Tigers apparently felt they had some flexibility to sell off a pitcher. So they’d DFA’d swing man Alex Faedo, and now they’re trading him to the Rays.
Kahnle and Flaherty in, Faedo out:
Faedo, 29, was about 9% better than league average by results last year, mostly pitching in relief, though his peripherals were much worse. He’s still pre-arbitration so he comes quite cheaply in salary, but since he doesn’t have minor league options remaining, he’ll have to make the Rays’ Opening Day roster or hit waivers.
In exchange, the Tigers are getting a 20-year-old catching prospect in Enderson Delgado who isn’t in the Rays’ top 30, but did hit very well as a 19-year-old switch-hitter at Low-A last season, and is thought to be a good defender. Nice get for a DFA’d pitcher, though the Tigers may have already known they could get some value for Faedo when they opted to designate him for assignment.
As an aside, the “cash” inclusion is a little weird. Usually, if a team were trading for a DFA’d player, they would be sending ONLY cash or a player, not both. The cash, as we’ve seen a bunch of times already this offseason in deals involving the Cubs, is basically a stand-in for the waiver claim price – i.e., paying a little extra to jump to the front of the line. The Tigers are getting a player and cash in this one. It’s atypical. Doesn’t mean anything. Just atypical.
I don’t expect that Faedo’s presence in the DFA world was holding up any other reliever moves in free agency or trade, but I suppose you never know.
The Detroit Tigers have made a bold move by trading right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo to the Tampa Bay Rays. Faedo, a former first-round draft pick, has shown promise in the Tigers’ farm system but has yet to make a significant impact at the major league level. In exchange for Faedo, the Tigers are receiving a package of prospects from the Rays, including a promising young outfielder and a couple of high-upside pitchers. This trade represents a calculated risk for Detroit, as they are banking on the potential of these young players to help bolster their roster in the future.
For the Rays, acquiring Faedo gives them another arm to add to their already formidable pitching staff. With a strong core of young talent, Tampa Bay is hoping that Faedo can develop into a key contributor for them in the years to come.
Overall, this trade has the potential to benefit both teams in the long run, with the Tigers adding to their prospect pool and the Rays adding depth to their pitching staff. Only time will tell if this move pays off for both sides.

Detroit Tigers trade Alex Faedo to Rays for minor leaguer, cash
The Detroit Tigers have traded right-hander Alex Faedo.
Faedo, who doesn’t have any minor league options remaining, has been dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for catcher Enderson Delgado and cash considerations, according to sources with knowledge of the trade.
Before the trade, Faedo designated for assignment by the Tigers last week to create room on the 40-man roster for the new reliever Tommy Kahnle, meaning Faedo would’ve landed on waivers had the Rays not acquired him in a trade.
FORMER RAYS PLAYER:Ex-Central Michigan left-hander Dietrich Enns joins Tigers after three-year trek through Asia
The 29-year-old posted a 3.61 ERA with 28 walks (11.4% walk rate) and 55 strikeouts (22.4% strikeout rate) across 57⅓ innings in 37 games in the 2024 season. He has combined for a 4.51 ERA across 175⅔ innings in 64 games (30 starts) in his three-year MLB career.

The Tigers selected Faedo with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2017 draft.
Delgado, a 20-year-old switch-hitting catcher, hit .255 with four home runs, 28 walks and 54 strikeouts across 56 games for Low-A Charleston in the 2024 season. He also hit .204 with two home runs, 11 walks and 28 strikeouts across 31 games for the Perth Heat in the Australian Baseball League during the offseason.
ANOTHER CATCHER:Defense is top priority as Tigers develop Thayron Liranzo into catcher of future
On defense, Delgado is average as a catcher with above average skills in the way he leads a pitching staff. He has experience as a first baseman, but he projects to stick at catcher.
Delgado wasn’t among the Rays’ top 30 prospects before the trade, according to MLB Pipeline, but he could emerge as a top 30 prospect within the Tigers’ farm system if he makes developmental strides in 2025.
For now, Delgado is considered a fringe prospect.

In return, the Tigers received a promising minor leaguer from the Rays organization who has shown potential to become a key player in the future. Additionally, the Tigers also received some cash considerations in the deal, providing them with some financial flexibility moving forward.
This trade marks a strategic move by the Tigers to continue building for the future, while also adding depth to their minor league system. Only time will tell if this trade will pay off for both teams involved. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Alex Faedo traded to Rays from Tigers
The Rays acquired right-hander Alex Faedo from the Tigers in exchange for Minor League catcher Enderson Delgado and cash on Monday. The Rays designated infielder Osleivis Basabe for assignment to make room for Faedo on their 40-man roster.
Detroit’s first-round pick from the 2017 Draft, the 29-year-old Faedo was designated for assignment last week when the Tigers signed reliever Tommy Kahnle. Faedo had seemingly found a role in Detroit’s bullpen after injuries stalled his career as a starter, but he ended last season on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder strain he suffered in August. He posted a 5-3 record and 3.61 ERA in 37 games, including six starts.
“I told Alex this is a really difficult move for us to make,” Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said. “Alex is a really popular teammate in the clubhouse. He’s gotten some really big outs for us. It’s a move we really didn’t want to make, but our 40-man [roster] is getting more talented these days and any time you add a new player to the roster, it generally means that it costs you a valuable contributor on the back end.
TRADE DETAILS
Rays get: RHP Alex Faedo
Tigers get: Minor League C Enderson Delgado, cash“Again, I think Alex has been a really talented pitcher and has gotten some big outs for us, but I think his out-of-options status made it a little bit more difficult of a fit on our roster here.”
Delgado, 20, was signed as an international free agent in January 2022 and split last season between Single-A Charleston and the Florida Complex League, hitting .259 with four homers and 30 RBIs in 65 games. He did not rank among the Rays’ top 30 prospects, according to MLB Pipeline.
Faedo was optioned in 2021, 2022 and 2023. He had been granted a fourth Minor League option last offseason because he had less than five years of service in the Majors or Minors due to injuries. The Tigers didn’t use the option, but since last year counted as Faedo’s fifth year, the extra option couldn’t carry over.
The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired pitcher Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers in a trade deal that has sent shockwaves through the baseball world. Faedo, who was the Tigers’ first-round draft pick in 2017, has shown great potential on the mound and is expected to bolster the Rays’ pitching rotation. The 25-year-old right-hander has a powerful fastball and a devastating slider, making him a valuable asset for any team. In his three seasons in the minor leagues, Faedo has compiled an impressive 3.59 ERA with 214 strikeouts in 192 innings pitched.
The Rays, who are known for their savvy trades and ability to develop young talent, are hoping that Faedo will continue to progress and become a key contributor to their pitching staff. On the other hand, the Tigers are looking to acquire some much-needed prospects in exchange for Faedo as they continue their rebuilding process.
It will be interesting to see how Faedo performs in his new environment and how this trade ultimately pans out for both teams. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Detroit Tigers still want Alex Bregman after signing Jack Flaherty
The window is open for the Detroit Tigers to make a run for the World Series while reigning Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal remains under contract for the next two seasons, but free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman could be the final piece of the puzzle.
Bregman is one of the best players in baseball.
The Tigers are still interested in Bregman after signing right-hander Jack Flaherty to a two-year, $35 million contract, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to the Free Press on Sunday night after ESPN’s Buster Olney first reported the Tigers’ continued interest.
Adding Bregman — a two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champion — will cement the Tigers as the favorites to win the American League Central in 2025, as well as put them in contention to win the World Series.
INSTANT EVAL:Tigers sign Jack Flaherty: Grade, analysis on 2-year, $35 million contract
Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.
The Tigers — led by president of baseball operations Scott Harris — have conducted their offseason moves around their interest in signing Bregman, as they declined to upgrade the offense with other notable right-handed hitters.
For example, the Tigers showed interest in but passed on outfielder Anthony Santander, who eventually signed with the Toronto Blue Jays for five years and $92.5 million, first baseman Christian Walker, who eventually signed with the Houston Astros for three years and $60 million, and infielder Ha-Seong Kim, who eventually signed with the Tampa Bay Rays for two years and $29 million.
Meanwhile, the Tigers continue to be involved in the Bregman sweepstakes, along with the Astros, Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs. The only known offer is from the Astros, at six years and $156 million.
Any other offers have not been disclosed.
THE LATEST:Tigers, Alex Bregman negotiations at standstill as spring training nears
As for the Tigers, the starting rotation is set with Flaherty, Skubal, Alex Cobb, Jackson Jobe and Reese Olson. The bullpen has five relievers locked in: Beau Brieske, Jason Foley, Tyler Holton, Tommy Kahnle and Will Vest. The lineup features five consistent contributors: Kerry Carpenter, Riley Greene, Colt Keith, Parker Meadows and Gleyber Torres.
The only thing missing is Bregman.
The Tigers have signed four free agents this offseason: Flaherty for two years and $35 million, Cobb for one year and $15 million, Torres for one year and $15 million and Kahnle for one year and $7.75 million.
The four signings increased the 2025 payroll by more than $60 million, with Flaherty making $25 million in 2025. The projected 2025 payroll is approximately $140 million, which ranks just outside of the top 15 among the 30 MLB teams. Signing Bregman to a six-year contract would add another $25-30 million in average annual value to the payroll.
TAKING A CHANCE:Gleyber Torres bets on himself with Tigers, keeping $100 million in mind
Bregman, who turns 31 in late March, answers on-field and off-field needs for the Tigers.
The Tigers need a third baseman and a middle-of-the-order hitter and a championship leader; Bregman brings Gold Glove defense at third base and Silver Slugger offense at the plate and 99 games of playoff experience.
[ MUST LISTEN: Make “Days of Roar” your go-to Detroit Tigers podcast, available anywhere you listen to podcasts (Apple,Spotify) ]
Additionally, the Tigers have an excess of left-handed hitters in their lineup, previously described by Harris as a problem to solve after the Tigers were slammed out of the postseason by the Cleveland Guardians in Game 5 of the ALDS.
The Tigers signed Torres, a right-handed hitting second baseman, then moved left-handed hitter Keith to first base as the replacement for right-handed hitter Spencer Torkelson — in effect, making a righty-for-righty swap in the everyday lineup and leaving the Tigers with a lineup still out of balance.
Bregman solves that problem, too.
A DEEPER DIVE:Why free-agent Alex Bregman can help Tigers on the field, behind the scenes
The Tigers have already upgraded the lineup, rotation and bullpen for the 2025 season with their four signings in free agency. After Flaherty, signing Bregman would solidify the Tigers as World Series contenders this season, not just AL Central favorites.
There are less than 15 days until position players report to spring training.
It’s time for Bregman to sign.

The Detroit Tigers are not slowing down in their pursuit of Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, even after signing pitcher Jack Flaherty to a lucrative contract.Despite bolstering their pitching staff with Flaherty, the Tigers are still in need of a power hitter like Bregman to boost their offense. Bregman, a two-time All-Star and Silver Slugger winner, would provide a significant upgrade to Detroit’s lineup.
The Tigers have reportedly been in talks with the Astros about a potential trade for Bregman, but no deal has been reached yet. However, the team remains optimistic that they can strike a deal to bring Bregman to Detroit.
With Flaherty solidifying their pitching rotation, adding Bregman to their lineup would make the Tigers a serious contender in the AL Central. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Jack Flaherty contract makes it even more important for Cubs to sign Alex Bregman
It has been a boom and bust sort of offseason for the Chicago Cubs.
We can’t say Jed Hoyer has sat on his hands. The Kyle Tucker was a genuine swing for the fences — the sort of blockbuster Cubs fans pine for. Tucker finished last season with 23 home runs and 4.7 WAR in just 78 games. He’s an MVP candidate at full strength and he offers Chicago a path back to the postseason.
Hoyer even double-dipped on the former Houston Astros champs, working overtime to land Ryan Pressly. It’s fair to express concern about a past-prime closer coming off his worst season in years, but Pressly is a proven winner and he was an All-Star as recently as 2021. He’s a definite upgrade over Hector Neris, right? (Right.)
Chicago feels like the presumptive favorites in a wide-open NL Central. The Brewers are bleeding talent. The Reds are fiesty, but probably not ready. The Cardinals are in open free fall. The Pirates? Well… Bob Nutting still owns the team.
That said, the Cubs aren’t close to the National League heavyweights. The Dodgers are lapping most teams on the raw talent front. Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Arizona all made consequential additions this winter, while New York signed Juan freakin’ Soto to the largest contract in MLB history. Hoyer still has some ground to make up.
So, why not circle back to the available pool of former Astros. Alex Bregman is there for the taking and the Cubs are out of excuses.

Jack Flaherty inked a two-year, $35 million contract with the Detroit Tigers on Sunday.
So what? How does that impact the Cubs?
Well, that’s incredible value for a World Series champ coming off an incredibly productive campaign. Flaherty, 29, finished the season with a 3.17 ERA and 194 strikeouts before leading an injury-ravaged, patchwork Dodgers rotation to the promised land. He was mostly brilliant in October and put together big outings when LA needed it most.
The Cubs, who need another top-line starter behind Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga, should’ve been all over Flaherty at that price. He clearly loved Detroit, to the point where a hometown discount isn’t out of the question, but the Cubs should have more money to spend than Scott Harris’ small-market Tigers. Flaherty would’ve been a genuine needle-mover for Craig Counsell’s club. There isn’t a better manager in the sport when it comes to maximizing his rotation, assuming he actually has talent to work with.
It’s hard to come up for an excuse for Chicago’s silence on the Flaherty front… unless Bregman is coming down the pipeline. If the Cubs turn around and ink Bregman to a contract, whether it’s three years with an opt out or seven years fully guaranteed, fans will forgive the Flaherty oversight. Bregman has direct connections to Tucker and Pressly, his former teammates, and he’d give the Cubs another impact bat in the middle of a lineup that needs it.
Bregman, Dansby Swanson, Nico Hoerner, and Michael Busch? That’s one heck of an infield. Chicago is not the favorite for Bregman right now, but it’s never too late to get in the mix — until it is.
The recent contract extension of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jack Flaherty has raised the stakes for the Chicago Cubs to secure a long-term deal with star third baseman Alex Bregman. Flaherty’s five-year, $109 million contract sets a new benchmark for young, elite players in the league, and it highlights the importance of locking up key players for the future. With Flaherty now locked in, the Cubs must prioritize signing Bregman to solidify their lineup and ensure their competitiveness in the National League Central. Bregman, a dynamic hitter and defensive standout, would be a game-changer for the Cubs and could help them maintain their position as contenders in the division.
The Cubs have already made significant moves this offseason, but securing Bregman’s services would be a major statement of their commitment to winning. With Flaherty’s contract serving as a reminder of the rising costs of top talent, the Cubs cannot afford to miss out on the opportunity to sign Bregman and solidify their roster for years to come.

MLB 2025 free agency: Alex Bregman’s strengths, concerns, best fits
Alex Bregman has been one of the best players in baseball since his first full season with the Houston Astros in 2017, helping them to eight consecutive trips to the playoffs and two World Series titles. He ranks 10th among position players in WAR since 2017, he’s a two-time All-Star, an MVP runner-up and just won his first Gold Glove.
He’s the kind of player every team and every manager would love to have, not just for his production but for the intangibles he brings. A.J. Hinch, then the manager of the Astros, once told ESPN: “I’ve never been around a player who enjoys playing baseball as much as Alex Bregman.”
Bregman has been a consistent performer the past three seasons, averaging 4.5 WAR, 25 home runs and 89 RBIs. While that doesn’t match his 2018-19 peak, that’s still good enough to make him one of the top 25 position players in the sport. And there are teams that need a third baseman: 14 teams in 2024 received an OPS under .700 from third base.
Going into the offseason, Kiley McDaniel had him at No. 5 in his free agent rankings with a projected contract of six years, $187 million.
Yet, it’s February, with spring training just around the corner and Bregman remains unsigned, a little perplexing for a player with his credentials. Of course, teams are paying for what Bregman is going to do in the future — and there are some red flags for a player who reportedly turned down a six-year, $156 million offer from the Astros in December. Those have perhaps made teams hesitant to match Bregman’s asking price.
We’ve detailed the All-Star veteran’s strengths, so let’s dig into those red flags and which teams are a best fit.
Alex Bregman is one of the most sought-after free agents in the 2025 MLB offseason, and for good reason. The talented third baseman has proven himself to be a valuable asset to any team with his impressive skill set and consistent performance on the field.Strengths:
– Bregman is known for his exceptional hitting ability, with a career batting average well above .300. He has power at the plate, consistently hitting home runs and driving in runs for his team.
– Defensively, Bregman is a standout player at third base. He has great range, a strong arm, and excellent fielding skills, making him a reliable defender.
– Bregman is also a smart and savvy baserunner, often stealing bases and putting pressure on opposing pitchers and defenses.Concerns:
– One concern with Bregman is his health and durability. He has had a few injuries throughout his career, which could be a red flag for teams looking to sign him to a long-term contract.
– Some critics have also pointed out Bregman’s occasional struggles in pressure situations, particularly in the postseason. While he has performed well overall in the playoffs, there have been moments where he has underperformed.Best fits:
– The New York Yankees could be a great fit for Bregman, as they are in need of a reliable third baseman with power and defensive prowess. Bregman’s offensive skills could thrive in Yankee Stadium, and he could provide a boost to their lineup.
– The Los Angeles Dodgers are another potential landing spot for Bregman, as they have a strong team and are always looking to add top talent to their roster. Bregman’s versatility and consistency could make him a valuable asset for the Dodgers as they continue to compete for championships.Overall, Alex Bregman is a top free agent in the 2025 offseason with a unique skill set that could benefit a number of teams. With his impressive hitting, defensive abilities, and baserunning skills, Bregman is sure to be a valuable addition to any team that signs him.

#MLB #free #agency #Alex #Bregmans #strengths #concerns #fitsCivil War, Annihilation, and how Alex Garland explores the dark side of humanity
From Ex Machina to Civil War, Alex Garland’s varied work as a writer-director explores the inherent flaws that make us human.
NB: The following contains spoilers for Ex Machina and Men.
It’s a sign of how gifted Alex Garland is as a storyteller that he can move between forms seemingly without effort. A pair of best-selling novels in the 1990s (The Beach, The Tesseract) led to his screenwriting work in the 2000s (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go) and some videogame industry writing (Enslaved: Odyssey To The West, DmC: Devil May Cry).
It was during the difficult production of 2012’s Dredd that Garland first turned his hand to directing (albeit uncredited), before making his directorial debut with Ex Machina just over a decade ago. In the years since, Garland has continued to forge an individual path through the movie business, writing and directing movies that are uncompromising and unmistakably personal. Although different in terms of their plots and even genres, they’re all united by common themes that appear to dwell on the filmmaker’s mind. One particularly insistent element is the human capacity for self-destruction.
You can see it running right through Civil War, Garland’s unsparing dystopian action thriller from 2024. It’s set in a United States in which the President (Nick Offerman) has set himself up as a dictator; a bitter fight has broken out between federal forces on one side and a secessionist coalition on the other. Garland doesn’t dwell on political allegiances; instead, he depicts the conflict’s broader societal cost.
The war has left the economy in such a state that the dollar is essentially worthless; cities are rocked by suicide bombings. In the countryside, Americans are torturing their old high school buddies, or tipping the bodies of innocent civilians into mass graves. Garland depicts war as a sickness – the final, terminal stage of a disease whose early symptoms likely include populism, fake news and increasing division.

Garland explores the human condition more closely through his ensemble cast. Three of them are seasoned professionals – war photojournalist Lee (Kirsten Dunst); New York Times reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson) and Reuters hack Joel (Wagner Moura). Joining the group is Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), a budding photojournalist.
Their stated goal is to travel across war torn America from New York to Washington DC, where they hope to capture the President’s final moments before he’s violently deposed. Beneath that professional ambition, they’re driven by more base instincts they may not even be aware of.
Joel is a thrill-seeker who gets an adrenaline rush from passing through near-death experiences unscathed. Sammy, an older gent who gets about with the help of a cane, has resigned himself to the dangerous nature of his job; his sentiment appears to be that he’s going to die at some point, so it may as well be in pursuit of something worthwhile. At the other end of the age spectrum, 20-something Jessie is driven by both her youthful ambition and misplaced feeling of indestructibility – as demonstrated in the sequence where she clambers from one moving vehicle to another.
Darkest of the lot is Lee, whose experiences in overseas battle zones have left her shell-shocked and cynical about the value of her own journalism. Focused on her work with almost aggressive single-mindedness, Lee’s resignation to the danger of her livelihood goes beyond Sammy’s and into the arena of self-destruction – there’s the sense, in both her dialogue and hollow-eyed demeanour, that she not only accepts that this latest assignment could kill her, but subconsciously hopes that it will.
Kirsten Dunst Civil War. Credit: A24 Read more: Civil War | How political is Alex Garland’s film?
There are parallels between Civil War and Alex Garland’s 2018 feature Annihilation here. Based on the novel by Jeff Vandermeer, Annihilation is about another group of people embarking on a mission with an uncertain end point. A mysterious forcefield – an alien phenomena dubbed the Shimmer – envelops the coast off Florida, exerting an otherworldly effect on everything in its reach.
A scientific expedition is dispatched to go into the Shimmer to try to learn more about it, and like the group in Civil War, they’re driven by something more than just curiosity. Protagonist Lena (Natalie Portman) is wracked with guilt because her soldier husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) ventured into the Shimmer months earlier and subsequently died. Kane’s decision to enter the Shimmer was fuelled partly by his sense of betrayal over Lena having an affair – as a result, Lena blames herself for his fate.
Lena’s compatriots have similarly bleak backstories. One scientist (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is terminally ill; another (Tessa Thompson) suffers from a history of depression and self-harm; still another (Gina Rodriguez) is grief-stricken following the death of her child. Viewed from the perspective of its characters, the meaning of the title ‘Annihilation’ becomes clear: the film is about the self-destructive instincts that reside in us, and that may even be hardwired into our DNA.
Read more: Ex Machina could have starred Jake Gyllenhaal
Hints of this same sentiment are threaded into Garland’s 2014 debut, Ex Machina. Oscar Isaac plays reclusive tech CEO Nathan Bateman, who may or may not have created a sentient AI in the shape of the female-looking android, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Young programmer Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a competition to visit Bateman’s sleekly minimal home, which is part bachelor pad, part lab and part fortress. There, Caleb is given the secret reason for his visit: to determine whether Ava is truly intelligent and self-aware, as the rest of us are, or is simply an advanced parlour trick.
Alicia Vikander in Ex Machina. Credit: Universal. Garland very deliberately presents Bateman as a darkly flawed personality – secretive, perhaps a bit paranoid, and prone to heavy drinking sessions for which he atones by lifting heavy weights the following morning. Bateman’s dogged pursuit of sentient AI – something real-world scientists are pursuing as these words are typed – could itself be seen as self-destructive; like the invention of the atom bomb, we know it could cause terrible harm, but it’s pursued regardless, like some kind of collective death urge. (AI also forms a part of Garland’s underrated TV series, Devs, which is well worth seeing.)
Of the films discussed so far, 2022’s Men might seem rather out of sync. A small-scale folk horror set in a remote country house, it’s a world apart from the Heart Of Darkness-inspired journeys of Civil War or Annihilation, or the high-tech claustrophobia of Ex Machina. But even here, we’re essentially peering into the psyche of a woman torn apart by guilt. Like Annihilation’s Lena, Men protagonist Harper (Jessie Buckley) is tormented by memories of her late husband, a depressive and emotionally manipulative figure whose influence still affects Harper’s every waking moment. Or is what we’re seeing her nightmare…?

Garland’s films constantly probe at the darker edges of the human condition. To be sentient, Garland seems to suggest, is to be inherently flawed, naturally compromised, innately self-destructive.
When this writer briefly met the writer-director a decade ago, something he said about AI might offer an insight into how his films deconstruct the human condition. While talking about what was then his latest work, Ex Machina, Garland referenced a line from the film about advanced computer programs that are capable of beating humans at chess.
Jessie Buckley stars in Men. Credit: A24. “It [the computer] seems to be wanting to beat you at chess, but it doesn’t want to beat you,” Garland said. “It doesn’t want anything. It doesn’t actually know it’s playing chess, right? Computers make you confront that kind of problem, and make you think about it. I’ve always been interested in that.”
Garland then added that a friend of his, who he said was ‘knowledgeable’ about the subject, held the opinion that sentient AI would never happen. Garland thought the opposite: “Instinctively, I think there will be,” he said. “And also rationally, I think there will be. We used to argue about that a lot over the years.”
It’s interesting to flip Garland’s philosophy around: if a non-sentient computer doesn’t want to win, then humans, by contrast, are driven by wants and desires from the minute we open our eyes in the morning. Even beyond our everyday need for food and water, we crave human connection; we search for validation; through self-destructive behaviours, we seek escape.
In Ex Machina, the male characters realise – too late to save themselves – that the AI in their midst really has achieved sentience. How do they learn this? Because the AI – as embodied by Ava and another female-looking robot, Kyoko (Sonoya Mizuno) – uses cunning and even murder in order to escape.
To be truly sentient, Garland suggests, is to have needs and desires beyond mere programming. And if we ever do create a sentient machine, then it follows that the entity we’ve made will inherit the darker impulses that make us human.
As Oscar Isaac’s character says in Ex Machina, “I gave her one way out. To escape, she’d have to use self-awareness, imagination, manipulation, sexuality, empathy, and she did. Now, if that isn’t true AI, what the fuck is?”

From Ex Machina to Civil War, Alex Garland’s varied work as a writer-director explores the inherent flaws that make us human.Nb: The following contains spoilers for Ex Machina and Men.
It’s a sign of how gifted Alex Garland is as a storyteller that he can move between forms seemingly without effort. A pair of best-selling novels in the 1990s led to his screenwriting work in the 2000s and some videogame industry writing.
Although different in terms of their plots and even genres, they’re all united by common themes…
In his films “Ex Machina” and “Annihilation,” director Alex Garland delves into the darkest corners of the human psyche, exploring themes of power, control, and destruction. Drawing on elements of science fiction and horror, Garland presents a chilling vision of a future where technology and nature collide, leading to devastating consequences. In “Ex Machina,” Garland examines the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and our desire to play god. The film follows a young programmer who is selected to participate in a Turing test with an advanced AI named Ava. As the programmer becomes more entangled in Ava’s world, he begins to question his own humanity and the consequences of his actions. Garland expertly weaves a narrative that forces the audience to confront the darker aspects of human nature, including manipulation, deceit, and the desire for control.
In “Annihilation,” Garland takes a different approach, exploring the destructive nature of humanity and our impact on the environment. The film follows a group of scientists who enter a mysterious zone known as “The Shimmer,” where the laws of nature are distorted and mutated. As the scientists unravel the mysteries of The Shimmer, they come face to face with their own inner demons and discover the true extent of their destructive tendencies.

#Civil #War #Annihilation #Alex #Garland #explores #dark #side #humanity‘Trust me, it’s a risk’… Alex Pereira’s decision to corner Sean Strickland at UFC 312 slammed by former double champ
Ahead of Sean Strickland’s title rematch against Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 312, he has drafted in the assistance of current light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira.
Despite Sean Strickland and Alex Pereira being former opponents of each other, the two became good friends and now consistently train together.
‘Tarzan’ is scheduled to rematch the middleweight champion, Dricus Du Plessis in the UFC 312 main event on February 8, in what is one of the biggest rivalries in recent years.
Ahead of their scheduled fight, both fighters have continuously traded blows with each other online, which started with Strickland offering a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ pact for their fight to only be striking.

With Strickland having controversially earned a rematch with ‘Stillknocks’ despite having only picked up a win over Paulo Costa since their last fight, he is hoping to re-write the wrongs of his last fight.
And in hoping to do that, he has drafted in the help of ‘Poatan’, who will be part of his corner team in Sydney, Australia.
Despite the 37-year-old champion agreeing to help his teammate, his decision has been questioned by former UFC double champion turned commentator, Daniel Cormier.
‘DC’ has questioned whether it is sensible for the Brazilian to travel all the way across the world to sit in Strickland’s corner when he should be preparing for his own title fight.
At UFC 313 on March 8, Pereira will defend his 205lb title against his most difficult test to date in number one contender, Magomed Ankalaev.
With his fight against the soaring Russian so close to UFC 312, Cormier believes Pereira is making a ‘dangerous’ decision that he could come to regret.
“What we do know is that Alex Pereira is going to be fighting a guy that could be his most formidable opponent because of the style,” Cormier began to explain on his YouTube channel.
“But we also have to take into effect that his relationship with Strickland is so strong that he’s willing to travel across the world to corner him. To me, it seems dangerous.
“It seems risky for Alex to go all the way to Australia knowing everything that goes into a training camp and how hard that travel can be on your body when you’re preparing to continue to defend your world championship.
“So how strong is that bond? How much does Sean Strickland now mean to Alex Pereira for him to take that risk? Because trust me, it’s a risk,” he continued.
Alex Pereira continues to tease a move up to heavyweight
Prior to the UFC booking his title defense against Ankalaev, ‘Poatan’ continuously hinted at potentially moving up to heavyweight to take on Jon Jones in a superfight.
Although interim champion, Tom Aspinall is still confident a title unification fight can be made, Pereira wants to shake things up by fighting ‘Bones’ himself.
If Jones does stick around to fight Aspinall, despite having admitted that he isn’t keen on the idea and will likely retire instead, Pereira will be keeping a close eye on that as he will potentially face the winner.
