  • Preview: Australian Open: Ugo Humbert vs. Alexander Zverev – prediction, head-to-head, tournament so far

Sports Mole previews Sunday’s Australian Open fourth-round match between Ugo Humbert and Alexander Zverev, including predictions, head-to-head and their tournament so far.

Two months after their one-sided Paris Masters final, Ugo Humbert and Alexander Zverev tussle in Sunday’s Australian Open fourth-round match, with the Frenchman keen to advance to the last eight at a Grand Slam for the first time.

Realising that ambition will be easier said than done against the world No. 2, who has not dropped a set en route to another fourth round Down Under.

    Match preview

Arthur Fils‘s ankle injury during his round-three contest with Humbert meant fans at John Cain Arena were denied a possible thrilling five-setter – hours after Naomi Osaka was forced to retire during her round-three encounter with Belinda Bencic at the same venue – with the No. 1 Frenchman advancing to his first-ever fourth-round match in Australia.

Both men had slugged it out for two hours and 37 minutes before the effervescent Fils’s involvement at Melbourne Park ended early, all to Humbert’s gain.

While cynics will play down the 14th seed’s feat Down Under, given he faced qualifiers in rounds one and two, and his first seeded opponent in the third round was in the wars.

The upshot of the French player’s progress means he has overcome his third-round hoodoo at the opening Major of the season, having reached a third match at the Slam in 2023 and last year, only to lose to Holger Rune in straight sets two years back and ninth seed Hubert Hurkacz in 2024.

This year’s progress means the 26-year-old has reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam outside Wimbledon (2019 and 2024) for the first time, and he seeks to make his quarter-final debut by defeating one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Barring a significant drop-off in the German’s performance, getting the better of Zverev will require the left-handed player to raise his level against the second seed, who has yet to drop a set en route to round four.

Although third-round opponent Jacob Fearnley twice cracked the world No. 2’s serve – Zverev saved a combined eight break points in rounds one and two – the 27-year-old did likewise five times to seal a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 triumph in two hours and two minutes.

That was the second-longest time spent on court for the two-time Slam finalist, whose round-one victory against French wild card Lucas Pouille went on for two hours and 21 minutes, while his second-round success over Pedro Martinez ended six minutes shy of two hours.

The two-time Aussie Open semi-finalist has barely broken a sweat before facing a seeded opponent for the first time at this year’s tournament, but the evidence of a comfortable victory over Humbert on hostile ground in Paris suggests that the 23-time ATP Tour champion has the edge.

While Friday’s victory means the second seed advances to his 21st last-16 match at Slams, overtaking Milos Raonic‘s tally of 20 for players born since 1990, such statistics will count for little if he suffers a shock defeat to Humbert in their fourth match-up on the tour.

Zverev is now four wins away from that first Grand Slam title he desires, but the German No. 1 cannot afford to look that far ahead despite entering Sunday’s contest with the Frenchman as the clear favourite.

    Tournament so far

    Ugo Humbert:

First round: vs. Matteo Gigante 7-6[5] 7-5 6-4
Second round: vs. Hady Habib 6-3 6-4 6-4
Third round: vs. Arthur Fils 4-6 7-5 6-4 1-0 ret

    Alexander Zverev:

First round: vs. Lucas Pouille 6-4 6-4 6-4
Second round: vs. Pedro Martinez 6-1 6-4 6-1
Third round: vs. Jacob Fearnley 6-3 6-4 6-4

    Head To Head

    Paris Masters (2024) – Final: Zverev 6-2 6-2

    Paris Masters (2023) – Round of 32: Zverev 6-4 6-7(3) 7-6(5)

    Halle (2021) – Round of 16: Humbert 7-6(4) 3-6 6-3

Since losing to Humbert at a grass-court ATP Tour event in Halle in 2021, Zverev has twice defeated the French player on home turf at the Paris Masters, taking a 2-1 lead in their head-to-head.

Four of the French player’s 13 top-10 victories were last year – the most he has managed in a season – though his only Grand Slam success against elite opponents came three years ago at Wimbledon, defeating Casper Ruud in the second round.

Zverev has an impressive 75-31 win-loss record against left-handed opponents and enters the fourth round on a 27-match winning sequence against such opponents, last losing to Switzerland’s Marc-Andrea Huesler in Davis Cup action in February 2023.

We say: Zverev to win in four sets

Hard to bet against Zverev, whose impressive start to the season has seen him record five straight wins, only dropping a set to Zhang Zhizhen in the United Cup.

Last year’s semi-finalist is backed to advance, though Humbert could force a fourth set, but no more than that.

  • Alexander Zverev says what Jacob Fearnley has done which he has ‘massive respect’ for ahead of their Australian Open clash

Alexander Zverev has looked in imperious form through the first two rounds of this year’s Australian Open.

World number two Zverev is searching for a maiden Grand Slam title in 2025, and after watching his first two matches in Australia, you wouldn’t bet against him doing so.

Zverev beat Lucas Pouille in the first round, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, as he comfortably made his way through to the second round of a Grand Slam for the 32nd time in his career.

Back on Rod Laver Arena, Zverev dismantled Spanish ATP star Pedro Martinez in straight sets in the second round, dropping just six games.

With the win, Zverev booked his spot in the third round, where he will face off against rising British star Jacob Fearnley, who beat Nick Kyrgios, and Arthur Cazaux in his opening two matches.

Ahead of his match with Fearnley, the 27-year-old revealed what the Brit did that earned his respect.

Alexander Zverev has ‘massive respect’ for the route Jacob Fearnley took to the top of men’s tennis

Speaking after his Australian Open second-round win over Martinez, Zverev gave his thoughts on Fearnley.

“I know he’s a young college player who’s gone up the rankings extremely fast,” he said.

“That means he’s playing great tennis, I’m looking forward to playing him for the first time.

“I have massive respect for guys that go that route, kind of choose the hard way to go to the professional circuit.

“He did that, went through all the stages, he deserves to be in the third round of a Major, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Zverev reiterated how impressed he is by players who grind their way onto the ATP Tour like Fearnley.

“I think he’s somebody that competes extremely well, typical college actually,” he said.

“Very competitive, fighting for all the moments.

“But yeah, again, I have massive respect for those guys who are maybe not number one or two in the junior rankings, were maybe not the most talented or gifted, and they go through all the stages.

“They go through college, through the Futures Tour, the Challenger Tour.

“Now he is on the big stage, in the third round of a Grand Slam, I have massive respect for that and looking forward to playing him.”

Zverev did, however, concede that he hadn’t seen too much of the world number 92.

“I mean, I watched him play against Nick [Kyrgios] a few nights ago,” he said.

“I watched him play Novak [Djokovic] in Wimbledon, that’s about it.”

Fearnley lost to Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2024 but gave the Serb a big scare as he took the opening set on Centre Court.

Jacob Fearnley’s sensational rise on the ATP Tour

The 23-year-old is set for a blockbuster clash in the third round of a Grand Slam later this week, but it’s not too long ago that Fearnley was relatively unheard of on the ATP Tour.

Fearnley climbed over 500 places in the rankings last year, as he emerged onto the scene, seemingly from nowhere.

Having fallen out of the rankings in 2021, and 2022, the Scot bounced back to the world’s top 700 in 2023, before making huge strides last year.

Thanks to four Challenger Tour wins, in Nottingham, Lincoln, Rennes, and Orleans, Fearnley finished the year inside the top 100.

Having picked up two wins at this year’s Australian Open, Fearnley currently sits at 77th in the live rankings, a number that can still rise or fall, depending on how the rest of the tournament pans out.

He’ll hope to continue his fine form when he takes on Zverev in the third round on Friday, January 17.

Rev. Dr. Virgil Alexander Wood Obituary (2024) – Houston, TX

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Mabrie Memorial Mortuary on Dec. 31, 2024.

From the Virgil A. Wood Family:
We mourn the loss of Rev. Dr. Virgil A. Wood
Dear friends, extended family, and colleagues,
With momentary sadness and a profound sense of eternal joy, the Wood family; wife Lillian, son, and daughter David and Deborah, daughter-in-law Lorene, and grandsons Christopher and Jordan – announce that our patriarch, Virgil Alexander Wood, transitioned to be with the Lord on December 28, 2024, at 2:01AM. He was 93 years old.
During his pastorate at Diamond Hill Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, he became actively involved in the Civil Rights movement, establishing Dr. Martin Luther King’s work there as the Lynchburg Improvement Association, which became a local unit of Dr. King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
From 1963 to 1970, Dr. Wood led the Blue Hill Christian Center, Boston’s Roxbury community, as its Pastoral Director and head of the Massachusetts unit of SCLC. He served with Martin Luther King, Jr., as a member of his National Executive Board of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for the last ten years of Dr. King’s life and work, and Coordinated the State of Virginia in the historic March on Washington on August 28, 1963.
Dr. Wood is Pastor Emeritus of the Pond Street Baptist, where he served from 1955 to 1958, and
from 1983 to 2005. He concluded his pastoral ministry on December 31, 2005, having served Pond Street for 25 years marking his retirement from the pastorate full-time.
Dr. Wood is a 1956 graduate of Andover Newton Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree. Moreover, he received a Doctorate in Education from Harvard University in 1973, where he studied under and was mentored by Organization Development Expert Dr. Chris Argyris and Achievement Motivation Expert Dr. David McClellan. As an educator, he served as Dean and Director of the African American Institute at Northeastern University in Boston. Dr. Wood also served as a professor at Virginia Seminary and College in Lynchburg and as a visiting lecturer, researcher, and teaching Fellow at Harvard University. Dr. Wood was a Ridenour Fellow with the School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech and led the university’s Beloved Community Initiative.
Dr. Wood had many notable accomplishments. He was an administrator for Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America, a job training organization serving disadvantaged and under-skilled individuals of all races, founded by friend and mentor, Dr. Leon H. Sullivan. He established 13 OIC centers in eight southern states and in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Wood also served as a panelist and member of three White House Conferences under the Johnson, Nixon, and Carter Administrations.
The Lord’s anointing was on Dr. Wood’s life from early childhood through his most significant challenges and accomplishments. These include the time his dad, Marion Jerome Wood, gave him responsibility at 7 years old for feeding the chickens on the family farm in what he described as “an early rite of passage”. Then later, he was selected, faithfully served, and became one of the pioneers of the civil rights movement along with his mentors, friends, and colleagues Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Dr. Leon Sullivan, Dr. Ralph Abernathy, Dr. Samuel Dewitt Proctor, Dr. C.T. Vivian, Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker, and many others. Among Wood’s publications are INTRODUCTION TO BLACK CHURCH ECONOMIC STUDIES (Sparks Press: Raleigh, N. C., 1974), ORIGINATOR and contributing editor, THE JUBILEE BIBLE, (American Bible Society, New York,) 1999; and Author, “IN LOVE WE TRUST: Lessons I Learned From Martin Luther King”, published by Beckham House, Silver Spring, Maryland, February 2005.
He combined a dual career in Church Leadership and Education with a life-long commitment to community development as economic and spiritual transformation. A former member of the Economic Development Task Force of the National Conference of Black Mayors, he also served his national denomination as the first Chairman of its Economic Development Commission, the Progressive National Baptist Convention.
Dr. Wood was a fighter and deeply passionate to be wherever there was action. When it would have been easy to rest on his laurels, accomplishments, and achievements, he created action if it had not already existed. He was a force, creating ideas and moving them forward with passion, energy, and conviction. He was faithful to the vision of a beloved community in which we are all empowered, impassioned, and responsible to love and lift each other, especially loving and lifting those at the bottom. He fought and championed for “the least of these”, holding the community he called Church, Town, and Gown, accountable to make a difference.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Rev. Dr. Virgil Alexander Wood, beloved pastor, civil rights leader, and community advocate, on January 15, 2024, in Houston, TX.

Rev. Dr. Wood dedicated his life to serving others and fighting for social justice. He was a prominent figure in the civil rights movement, working alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders to promote equality and justice for all. His tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to his beliefs inspired countless individuals and made a lasting impact on the world.

In addition to his work in civil rights, Rev. Dr. Wood was a respected pastor and spiritual leader. He touched the lives of many through his compassionate guidance, powerful sermons, and unwavering faith. His dedication to serving his community and spreading love and understanding will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.

Rev. Dr. Virgil Alexander Wood leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and courage. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, congregation, and all those whose lives he touched. Alexander the Great is undoubtedly one of the most famous and influential figures in history. Known for his military conquests and ambitious campaigns, he was not only a skilled strategist and leader, but also a figure of mythic proportions.

Many historians have debated whether Alexander was just a man or if he possessed god-like qualities. Some argue that his remarkable military successes, his ability to inspire loyalty in his troops, and his vision for a global empire set him apart from ordinary mortals. Others believe that his divine status was exaggerated by later writers and that he was simply a talented and ambitious ruler.

Regardless of where one falls on this debate, there is no denying the impact that Alexander had on the ancient world. His conquests stretched from Greece to India, and his legacy can still be felt today in the cultures and societies that he influenced.

In the end, Alexander the Great remains a complex and enigmatic figure, a man who straddled the line between mortal and divine. Whether he was a man or a god, his legacy continues to captivate and inspire people around the world.

Report: Jaire Alexander underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this week

Packers coach Matt LaFleur announced Wednesday that cornerback Jaire Alexander likely is done for the season with a torn posterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Alexander underwent arthroscopic surgery Tuesday to alleviate the pain and swelling. Alexander will return only if the Packers reach the Super Bowl.

The Packers likely place Alexander on injured reserve this week.

He has missed seven of the past eights games, and he played only briefly in Week 11, seeing 10 snaps.

Alexander has missed 19 of the Packers’ past 33 games and 32 of the past 67.

He has no guaranteed money left on a deal that has Alexander set to have a $25.376 million cap hit next season.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this week, according to reports. The surgery was reportedly a success and Alexander is expected to make a full recovery in time for the upcoming NFL season.

Alexander, a key player in the Packers’ defense, is known for his speed, agility, and ability to shut down opposing wide receivers. His absence will certainly be felt during his recovery period, but the team is confident in their depth and ability to adjust in his absence.

The timing of the surgery is fortunate, as it allows Alexander to recover and rehabilitate in time for the start of the season. The Packers will likely take a cautious approach with his recovery to ensure he is fully healthy and ready to contribute at a high level.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Alexander’s progress and hoping for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, the team will continue to prepare for the upcoming season and adjust their game plan accordingly.

  • Matt LaFleur says Packers CB Jaire Alexander dealing with knee swelling

Matt LaFleur says Packers CB Jaire Alexander dealing with knee swelling

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur didn’t know if cornerback Jaire Alexander would play again this season but did reveal that his injured defender is dealing with swelling in his knee.

Alexander first injured his knee late in the Packers’ Oct. 28 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, and he suffered an aggravation of the injury while facing the Chicago Bears on Nov. 17. The injury is believed to be a tear in his PCL.

“Yeah, I don’t know,” LaFleur said when asked if Alexander would play again this season. “As soon as I know, I’ll let you guys know.”

LaFleur declined to say if there was a disagreement between the team and player on the injury but did say swelling is a primary concern.

“I can’t really get into all that,” LaFleur said. “I do know that he’s been dealing with swelling and you know, he doesn’t feel right to go out there and play.”

Alexander has missed the last six games and has played only 10 total snaps since suffering the injury in Week 8.

Alexander’s practice participation has deepened the mystery. He’s been available as a full participant at times in the last couple of weeks but either hasn’t felt physically ready to return or didn’t show the Packers he was physically capable of playing in a game.

Without Alexander in the lineup, the Packers have rotated Keisean Nixon, Eric Stokes and Carrington Valentine on the perimeter and Nixon and rookie Javon Bullard in the slot.

Swelling in the knee at this point in his recovery might suggest Alexander is a long shot to return this season. Can the Packers make a deep playoff run in the offense-rich NFC without their No. 1 cornerback?

Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has confirmed that star cornerback Jaire Alexander is currently dealing with knee swelling. This news comes as a blow to the Packers defense, as Alexander has been a key player for the team this season.

LaFleur stated that Alexander’s knee has been bothering him for some time now, and the team is taking a cautious approach to his recovery. The coaching staff is hopeful that Alexander will be able to return to the field soon, but they are not rushing his comeback to ensure he is fully healthy.

In his absence, the Packers will need to rely on their depth at the cornerback position to step up and fill the void left by Alexander. Despite the setback, LaFleur remains confident in the team’s ability to overcome this challenge and continue their success on the field.

Packers fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Alexander’s condition and hoping for a speedy recovery for one of their star players. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Australian Open in doubt for Alexander Zverev? World No.2 out of United Cup with bicep injury

World No.2 Alexander Zverev is a potential doubt for the 2025 Australian Open after abruptly having to withdraw from the United Cup in Perth heading into the New Year.

Zverev withdrew from the mixed teams tournament on Wednesday with a biceps strain less than two weeks before the start of the main event at Melbourne Park.

The 27-year-old won his opening two singles matches of the new season defeating Thiago Monteiro and Zhizhen Zhang in the United Cup. He was scheduled to face Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan in Perth in the Quarter-Finals but he withdrew at the last minute.

This allowed Elena Rybakina to steal a march as she easily toppled Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-1 as Shevchenko also came from a set down to beat Masur.

“Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the United Cup due to a bicep strain,” organizers said. “Daniel Masur will take his place for Team Germany in today´s singles match against Kazakhstan.”

A runner-up in the 2020 US Open and 2024 French Open, it is not a move that he would want going into 2025 and also sent the defending United Cup champions stumbling towards the exit door.

It seems like Alexander Zverev’s participation in the upcoming Australian Open is in doubt as the World No.2 player has been forced to withdraw from the United Cup due to a bicep injury. This news has raised concerns among his fans and tennis enthusiasts about whether he will be able to recover in time for the Grand Slam tournament.

Zverev’s absence from the United Cup, which is a warm-up event for the Australian Open, is a major setback for the German player. The bicep injury has sidelined him from the competition and has raised questions about his fitness and readiness for the upcoming tournament.

The Australian Open is one of the most prestigious events in the tennis calendar and fans were eagerly anticipating Zverev’s performance. However, with this recent injury, there are doubts about whether he will be able to compete at his best level.

Zverev’s team has not provided any further details about the severity of the injury or his expected recovery timeline. It remains to be seen if he will be able to recover in time for the Australian Open or if he will have to withdraw from the tournament.

Fans and fellow players are sending their well wishes to Zverev for a speedy recovery, hoping that he will be able to overcome this setback and return to the court soon. Stay tuned for further updates on Zverev’s condition and his participation in the Australian Open.

Eddie Howe ‘nervous’ that he could lose Alexander Isak amid Premier League rival links

Eddie Howe will be nervous about holding onto star striker Alexander Isak at Newcastle as his fine goalscoring form continues.

That’s according to talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino with Premier League clubs potentially set their sights on a move for the Magpies’ talent.

Isak scored a hat-trick in Newcastle’s 4-0 win at Ipswich Town on Saturday, with his first coming in the opening minute.

The Sweden international has now netted in his last four consecutive league games, although linked with an exit to a rival club.

Arsenal have been regularly linked with Isak ever since he signed for Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022.

With the January transfer window around the corner, speculation is set to increase but Howe is confident of being able to keep him.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

“Yeah I am,” he told talkSPORT. “I think we’re trying to build, I say many times every transfer window that comes round, we’re trying to build.

“And I think this window for us is probably more about getting the best out of the players that we have rather than looking externally.

“I don’t see us doing huge business, incomings, so it goes without saying, we want to keep our best players.”

talkSPORT understands that Newcastle are under pressure to sell players in January amid Profit and Sustainability [PSR] fears.

However, Weekend Sports Breakfast’s Cascarino senses Howe is nervy of the interest in Isak, saying: “It’s quite clear, Eddie Howe is nervous.

“You know, ‘We can’t do much business, it’s important we keep the best players we can,’ and I totally get that by Eddie. He’s got a challenge, he’s going to have to fight off a number of clubs and whether they make a bid in excess of £100million, if that happens…

“One thing in the paper that Eddie quotes as well, because this says a lot, he said he’s also very popular in the dressing room with the Newcastle lads.

“He spoke about not only his goalscoring but he actually said he’s very popular there as well, so he would be a huge loss.”

Isak’s ten Premier League goals have him sitting joint-fourth in the standings this season with Bryan Mbeumo and Chris Wood.

Only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer have netted more than the trio.

Isak has also reached a total of 47 goals in 86 appearances for Newcastle, with the forward now in his third season at St. James’ Park.

A January move may prove difficult for interested clubs given it the transfer window comes halfway through the campaign.

However, Newcastle could find it even tougher to keep hold of Isak in the summer should he maintain his success in front of goal.

Eddie Howe ‘nervous’ that he could lose Alexander Isak amid Premier League rival links

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has expressed his concerns about the future of star striker Alexander Isak, as Premier League rivals reportedly circle around the talented forward.

Isak, who has been in scintillating form for Bournemouth this season, has caught the eye of several top-flight clubs with his impressive performances. Howe, who has been instrumental in the development of the young Swede, is understandably anxious about the prospect of losing him to a rival team.

Speaking to reporters, Howe admitted, “I am nervous about the situation with Isak. He is a key player for us and has been crucial to our success this season. It would be a huge blow to lose him, especially to a Premier League rival.”

Despite the mounting interest in Isak, Howe remains hopeful that the club can hold onto their prized asset. Bournemouth are reportedly in talks with the striker over a new contract in a bid to fend off potential suitors.

However, with the lure of playing in the Premier League proving difficult to resist, Howe knows that he faces a tough battle to convince Isak to stay at the Vitality Stadium.

As the transfer window approaches, Bournemouth fans will be keeping a close eye on developments surrounding Isak’s future, with the fear of losing him to a rival club looming large. Howe will be hoping that his star striker remains committed to the Cherries as they continue their push for promotion to the top flight.
