Venezuela’s top court issues a $10 million fine for TikTok over allegedly deadly video challenges
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela’s Supreme Court on Monday issued a $10 million fine against TikTok for “not implementing measures” to prevent viral video challenges that have allegedly led to the deaths of three Venezuelan children recently.
Judge Tania D’Amelio said TikTok had acted in a negligent manner and gave it eight days to pay the fine, while also ordering the video service company to open an office in Venezuela that would supervise content so that it complies with local laws.
The judge did not explain how Venezuela would force TikTok, whose parent company is based in China, to pay the fine. Venezuela has blocked dozens of websites in previous years for not complying with regulations set by its telecommunications commission.
TikTok did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press.
In November, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro blamed TikTok for the death of a 12-year-old girl who allegedly died after participating in a TikTok challenge that involved taking tranquilizer pills and not falling asleep.
Venezuela’s Education Minister Hector Rodriguez also said last month that a 14-year-old died after taking part in a TikTok challenge that involved sniffing substances. And on Nov. 21, Venezuela’s attorney general blamed video challenges on TikTok for the death of a third child.
Dozens of radio stations and television channels have been taken off the air in Venezuela under Maduro over their news coverage. More than 60 websites belonging to human rights groups and news companies were blocked at different times this year, according to VE Sin Filtro, a group that tracks media freedoms in the South American country.
In August, Venezuela banned the social media platform X as thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets t o protest the re-election of Maduro.
The Venezuelan government initially banned X for 10 days, after Maduro accused its owner Elon Musk of using the social media platform to “orchestrate attacks against Venezuela.” Musk had accused Maduro of rigging the July 28 election, which the United Nations and the Carter Center, an organization that monitors elections around the world, said did not meet international standards.
X can now be accessed on privately run internet providers in Venezuela, but it is still blocked by Venezuela’s state owned internet provider Movilnet.

Rueda reported from Bogotá, Colombia
Recently, Venezuela’s top court has issued a hefty $10 million fine for the popular social media platform TikTok. The fine comes in response to allegedly deadly video challenges that have been circulating on the platform. The challenges in question have reportedly led to serious injuries and even deaths among young users who attempted to replicate them. The court’s decision to issue such a large fine sends a strong message that harmful content will not be tolerated on social media platforms.
TikTok has come under fire in recent years for its lack of oversight and moderation of content, particularly when it comes to dangerous challenges that put users at risk. This latest ruling serves as a reminder that platforms like TikTok must take responsibility for the content they host and ensure the safety of their users.
As the popularity of social media continues to grow, it is essential for platforms to prioritize the safety and well-being of their users. Hopefully, this fine will serve as a wake-up call for TikTok and other social media platforms to take a more proactive approach to monitoring and removing harmful content.

Men from Ga. Paving Company Allegedly Attack Competitors: ‘Out of The Sopranos’
Six family members in the Georgia asphalt business are accused of attacking employees from a rival company with sticks and bats in broad daylight because they felt disrespected, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Mark Buckland Sr., 77, Mark Buckland Jr., 58, Willy Buckland Sr., 50, Willy Buckland Jr., 22, Luke Buckland, 28, and James Small, 21, were arrested and charged in connection with an alleged Dec. 19 attack on employees from EH Paving at a property in Bolingbroke, according to an incident report obtained by PEOPLE.
One of the victims told deputies that “the main reason for the fight today was due to the paving so close to Michael Buckland’s house and the Buckland’s found it ‘disrespectful’ that they got the job,” the report alleges.
The alleged attack is “like something out of the Sopranos TV series,” Monroe County Sheriff Brad Freeman told local outlet WMAZ.
“These are adult men too,” Freeman said, WMAZ reports. “Adult men with pretty good reputations.”
Monroe County Sheriff Public Information Officer Anna Greene Watkins tells PEOPLE, “Things like this usually do not happen here in Monroe County.”
The incident unfolded just after 1 p.m. on Dec. 19, when the owner of a property on Estes Road called 911 saying a group of men in three trucks pulled up, got out of the vehicles carrying sticks and bats and began arguing with men from EH Paving, who were working on his driveway, according to the report.
The men from EH Paving “backed up the driveway and attempted to retreat until there was nowhere to go,” the homeowner told the deputy on scene.
He said the alleged attackers “were swinging bats and hitting the men” from EH Paving.
One of the men from EH Paving took out a gun and shot it into the woods in an attempt to stop the fighting, according to the report.
Eddie Harrison, the owner of EH Paving said “he was scared Mark Sr was going to shoot him due to Mark Sr pulling a long ‘cowboy style pistol’ out and pointing it in his face,” the incident report alleges.
“Harrison stated Willy Buckland Sr hit his son in the head with a bat,” the report claims. “Harrison also stated Willy Jr. and [James Small] jumped on his other son Eddie Harrison Jr. and struck him multiple times with fists and a bat. Harrison stated Luke Buckland struck his nephew Eddie Jack Harrison with a bat.”
After Mark Buckland, Jr. told the deputy he had been punched in the mouth, the deputy asked him why he and his family were at the property on Estes Road.
Mark Buckland, Jr. was allegedly unable to give him an explanation, saying it was “just a misunderstanding,” according to the report.
Mark Buckland Jr. owns Houston Asphalt in Macon, according to the report. Mark Buckland Sr. and Willy Buckland, Sr. own asphalt companies as well, the report says.

Willy Buckland Jr., Luke Buckland and James Small are charged with simple battery and criminal trespass.
They were released on bond after spending two days in jail, according to online jail records.
It is unclear whether they have retained attorneys.
In a shocking turn of events, men from a Georgia paving company are facing allegations of attacking their competitors in a manner reminiscent of a scene out of The Sopranos.Authorities say that the men, who have not been publicly identified, allegedly assaulted rival workers from a competing company in a violent and unprovoked attack. The incident reportedly took place at a construction site where both companies were working, and tensions had been escalating between the two groups for some time.
Witnesses described the attack as brutal and organized, with the men from the Georgia paving company allegedly using baseball bats and other weapons to intimidate and harm their competitors. The victims were left battered and bruised, with some requiring medical attention for their injuries.
The Georgia paving company has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident, but authorities are investigating the matter and have promised to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
This shocking display of violence has left many in the industry concerned about the growing hostility and aggression between rival companies. It serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise when competition turns into conflict, and the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and professionally.
As the investigation unfolds, the men involved in this alleged attack may face criminal charges and legal consequences for their actions. In the meantime, the construction community is left reeling from this disturbing and violent incident that has shaken the industry to its core.

LA deputy mayor placed on leave after allegedly making bomb threat against City Hall
LOS ANGELES – Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Brian Williams has been placed on leave following an investigation into a bomb threat he allegedly made against City Hall earlier this year.
The FBI raided his Pasadena home Tuesday in connection with the investigation. No arrests have been made at this time.
The alleged bomb threat was made in September and Williams has been on leave since then.
The Mayor’s Office released the following statement that reads in part, “He was immediately placed on administrative leave. The Mayor takes this matter very seriously. When the threat was reported, LAPD investigated and determined there was no immediate danger. Following additional investigation, LAPD referred this matter to the FBI.”
According to a Los Angeles Police Department statement, the agency’s initial investigation determined Williams was likely the “source of the threat.”
“Due to the department’s working relationship with Mr. Williams, the investigation was referred to the FBI,” LAPD said in a statement. “The FBI remains the investigating agency.”
“No additional information is being released,” the LAPD added.
A neighbor of Williams said making a bomb threat is uncharacteristic of him.
Williams’ attorney released a statement saying, “Mr. Williams strongly maintains his innocence and intends to vigorously fight the allegations. Importantly, he has not been arrested, nor charged, and will continue cooperating with the investigation through attorneys. He has a lengthy career of public service and is presumed innocent of these allegations. We urge the public to allow the investigation process to play out and not to prejudge the facts of this case before they are known.”
Williams joined Bass’ office in March 2023. He was tasked with working closely with critical safety departments such as police, fire, Los Angeles World Airports police, and emergency. Prior to his appointment, Williams served seven years as the executive director of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission.
Williams also previously served as deputy mayor under Mayor James Hahn, where he was responsible for the management and oversight of the Department of Transportation, Public Works and Information Technology Agency.
The recent news of a Los Angeles deputy mayor being placed on leave after allegedly making a bomb threat against City Hall has shocked many residents and officials. The deputy mayor, whose name has not been released, is currently under investigation for the threat, which was reportedly made during a heated argument with a colleague. This incident has raised concerns about the safety and security of City Hall, as well as the behavior of those in positions of power. The deputy mayor’s actions are not only irresponsible and reckless, but also potentially criminal. It is crucial that a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the validity of the threat and to hold the individual accountable for their actions.
In the meantime, the mayor’s office has released a statement condemning the alleged threat and affirming their commitment to ensuring the safety of City Hall employees and visitors. The deputy mayor’s leave of absence serves as a necessary precaution while the investigation unfolds.
Overall, this situation serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining professionalism and integrity in all aspects of public service. It is essential that those in positions of authority uphold the trust and respect of the community they serve.

Frank Ocean feature allegedly removed from ‘SOS Deluxe: Lana’ at the last moment: SZA speaks out
SZA has officially put an end to a viral rumor suggesting that Frank Ocean was removed from her SOS Deluxe: Lana album. The rumor, which began circulating on X (formerly Twitter), claimed that Ocean was supposed to make a surprise appearance on the highly anticipated album but was allegedly cut “at the last minute.”
In response to the now-deleted post, SZA wasted no time clearing the air, writing, “LMAO now why would you even make this up. Ur insane… it never existed… and don’t ever play on Frank’s name like that EVAAAA.” Her sharp rebuttal effectively shut down the speculation, preventing an online firestorm among fans.
The rumor originated from a fan page dedicated to Frank Ocean, which suggested that the singer had recorded a verse for the album. After finding no trace of his vocals on the final release, fans quickly flooded SZA’s comments, demanding explanations. However, SZA’s direct denial clarified that the collaboration never occurred.
While Frank Ocean fans eagerly await new music, their patience continues to be tested. In July, Ocean teased fans with a selfie from the studio, sparking hope for upcoming projects. However, no new material has been released since, leaving fans clinging to speculative narratives like the one involving SZA’s album.
Frank Ocean feature allegedly removed from ‘SOS Deluxe: Lana’ at the last moment: SZA speaks outRumors have been swirling about a potential collaboration between Frank Ocean and Lana Del Rey on her upcoming album ‘SOS Deluxe: Lana.’ However, it seems that fans may have to wait a little longer to hear the highly anticipated track.
According to sources close to the project, Frank Ocean was initially set to be featured on a track on the deluxe edition of Lana’s album. However, at the last moment, the feature was allegedly removed from the final tracklist.
SZA, who is also featured on the album, recently spoke out about the situation in a recent interview. She expressed her disappointment in not being able to collaborate with Frank Ocean on the project, stating, “It’s a shame that the collaboration didn’t work out, but I have no doubt that Lana’s album will still be amazing.”
Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of ‘SOS Deluxe: Lana,’ which is set to drop later this month. While the absence of a Frank Ocean feature may be disappointing to some, there’s no doubt that Lana’s album will still be a must-listen for fans of both artists.

A pizza delivery worker, upset about a tip, allegedly repeatedly stabbed a customer at a Florida motel, authorities said Wednesday.
Brianna Alvelo, 22, had delivered pizza to the Riviera Motel in Kissimmee, located south of Orlando, on Sunday, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said. The victim paid for the $33.10 order and gave Alvelo a $2 tip, according to court documents.
When describing the incident to investigators, the victim said the delivery worker “rolled her eyes and walked away without saying anything” after getting the tip.
But later, Alvelo came back armed with a pocket knife and with an unknown male suspect, who was armed with a gun, according to the court documents. Alvelo and the man forced their way into the room, where the victim, her boyfriend and her 5-year-old daughter were. The unknown male allegedly commanded the victim’s boyfriend to go into the bathroom, and held him there at gunpoint.
While the men were in the bathroom, Alvelo allegedly stabbed the victim 14 times. The victim had stab wounds to the chest, arms, leg and abdomen, and was taken to a local hospital, where she had surgery for a ruptured lung. While there, the victim learned she was a few weeks pregnant, the court documents say. She’s currently in stable condition.
