    PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Actor Noah Wyle returned to Allegheny General Hospital, which serves as the backdrop for his new medical drama, “The Pitt.” 

    Allegheny Health Network shared photos of the actor posing with staff members on Instagram Monday, writing, “Dr. Robby is back in the ‘Burgh.” The health network said the hospital was excited to welcome Wyle back to the emergency department. 

    “The Pitt” is a Max original series from John Wells, the executive producer of “ER,” which also starred Wyle. 

    While most of the show was filmed on a set designed to recreate Allegheny General Hospital at Warner Bros. Studio in Burbank, California, the show spent three days filming in Pittsburgh. The crew shot drone footage above the hospital and around the city, and some scenes were shot on the hospital’s helipad. 

    “The Pitt” is “a realistic examination of the challenges facing healthcare workers in today’s America as seen through the lens of the frontline heroes working in a modern-day hospital in Pittsburgh,” according to a logline from Warner Bros. It has fifteen episodes, adding up to one 15-hour shift. So far, six episodes have been released. 

    The show is produced R. Scott Gemmill, John Wells and Michael Hissrich, all of whom have worked on “ER” with Wyle. Wells and Hissrich are both Carnegie Mellon University graduates, giving the show even more of a Pittsburgh connection.

  • Allegheny Township Big Lots appears to be in jeopardy as partial liquidation unfolds


    The future of Big Lots’ footprint in Western Pennsylvania remains unclear, but it’s not looking good for the Allegheny Township location.

    Its lease was recently available for transfer, which is a sign it could close as part of the struggling bargain retailer’s acquisition by a Boston-based asset liquidation firm.

    Locations in North Versailles, West Mifflin and Whitehall also made the list posted earlier this month by buyer Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, along with roughly 460 other stores in 47 states.

    The stores are mostly located in shopping plazas and range in size from about 19,000 to 55,000 square feet, the firm noted on the sale website.

    David Rosen, Big Lots’ landlord in Allegheny Township, did not immediately return a request for comment. The company is the last tenant in Rosen’s shopping plaza off Route 56.

    Will others be spared?

    The other 20-or-so Big Lots stores in Western Pennsylvania may have better prospects.

    Stores in Harrison, Hempfield, Monroeville, Penn Hills, Ross Township, Unity and other areas could stay open as part of 200 to 400 unnamed locations transferred to North Carolina-based Variety Wholesalers through the deal with Gordon Brothers.

    Up to two distribution centers, including the one in Tremont, Pa., could be saved, too.

    Variety Wholesalers, which operates more than 400 stores in the U.S. — mostly under the Roses and Roses Express names — has said it plans to run its latest acquisitions as Big Lots and may retain employees in the process.

    In a statement announcing the sale, Big Lots President and CEO Bruce Thorn said the deal presents the “strongest opportunity to preserve jobs, maximize value for the real estate and ensure continuity of the Big Lots brand.”

    The company has been seeking a buyer for many months and filed for bankruptcy protection in September.

    Gordon Brothers emerged as a buyer after Nexus Capital Management backed out of a sale agreement.

    Messages left with Gordon Brothers and Variety Wholesalers seeking location-specific information were not immediately returned.

    The Big Lots website seems to indicate nothing is final.

  • Allegheny County courts, many schools to close again Wednesday due to cold weather


    Allegheny County Common Pleas Courts will be closed again Wednesday, as will Pittsburgh Municipal Court, due to severe and hazardous cold weather conditions, court officials said

    For the second day in a row, President Judge Susan Evashavik DiLucente has ordered the closure of all divisions of the county Common Pleas Court and all Magisterial District Courts, as well as the municipal court, according to a statement Tuesday.

    Arraignment Court, however, will remain open for those proceedings. Emergency protection-from-abuse orders can be obtained at Arraignment Court, 600 First Avenue, Downtown.

    Allegheny County offices also will be partially closed, and non-essential county employees equipped with technology to work at home will be expected to do so, county officials said.

    Also Wednesday, schools throughout the region will hold classes online or suspend school altogether as a polar vortex continues to bring single-digit temperatures.

    Students at Pittsburgh Public Schools again will follow their regular class schedules for remote, synchronous learning Wednesday. The district has canceled all transportation, and staff will work remotely.

    The National Weather Service has issued a cold-weather advisory for Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, east-central Ohio and northern West Virginia due to low temperatures and below-zero wind-chill temperatures.

    The NWS forecast for Wednesday calls for scattered snow showers between 3-8 p.m. with about a half-inch of accumulation. The weather service predicts a high temperature of 13 degrees and wind-chill temperatures as low as -14 degrees.

    The high temperature for Wednesday is expected to hit 12 degrees, with wind-chill values as low as -16 degrees, before falling to a low of 4 degrees at night.

    Wind chills from 15 to 20 degrees below zero are dangerously low, causing frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes and hypothermia with prolonged exposure, the NWS said in its advisory.

    People who must go outside are urged to use caution and wear appropriate clothing, including hats and gloves. Pets should be kept indoors as much as possible, the NWS said.

    Temperatures in the region are expected to rise somewhat Thursday, with a high of 26 degrees and a low Thursday night around 15 degrees, according to the weather service.
