Kansas guard AJ Storr drives up court during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against Iowa State Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, in Ames, Iowa.

The Kansas men’s basketball team, which had been riding high off three straight wins led by dominant defensive efforts, came back down to earth with a double-digit loss at Iowa State on Wednesday.

By the time center Hunter Dickinson made it to the media room for his postgame press conference, he and his teammates were wasting no time in looking ahead to their next challenge, Kansas State, just two and a half days away.

“We know they’re going to play their tails off,” Dickinson said, “and we got to try to get back on track.”

The ninth-ranked Jayhawks will look to return to their winning ways and maintain an 18-season winning streak in games against their rival at Allen Fieldhouse, as they will welcome the struggling Wildcats to Lawrence on Saturday.

“Not sure if they’re going to make the tournament or not, but if they don’t, this is the type of game that they’re going to talk about in their banquet, if they beat us at our place, so we can’t allow that to happen,” guard Rylan Griffen said on postgame radio. “And we know this is a season-defining type (of) game for them. Their season is going to be pretty much predicated on the two times we play them, so just got to make sure we don’t let them have a great banquet.”

The Jayhawks will have to tackle Saturday’s challenge without senior forward KJ Adams, who suffered a shoulder injury against ISU. On Friday, KU coach Bill Self said Adams had a separated shoulder and would be “week to week.”

Like KU, K-State is trying to get its season back on course, but in the Wildcats’ case they’re working through much more significant setbacks.

After missing the NCAA Tournament last season, K-State revamped its roster with big investments in the transfer portal that have not yet paid off in full. The Wildcats suffered nonconference losses to teams like Liberty, Drake and Wichita State and has since opened Big 12 play 1-4, making them the only team in the Big 12 with a losing record on the season.

Late-game cold spells have been particularly deadly for KSU. At TCU on Jan. 4, the Wildcats went ahead 62-56 on a 3-pointer by Max Jones and didn’t score for the rest of the night in what became a one-point loss. Most recently, hosting Texas Tech on Tuesday, K-State made exactly one shot in the final eight minutes and 17 seconds.

The Wildcats’ biggest-name transfer, Coleman Hawkins, formerly played at Illinois and is a versatile 6-foot-10 forward averaging 10.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.2 steals per game, who forms a potent frontcourt duo with 6-foot-9 returnee David N’Guessan (12.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, a league-leading 64.3% field-goal percentage). Junior guard and Villanova transfer Brendan Hausen provides a contrasting style as one of the league’s best and highest-volume outside shooters — he’s 50-for-124 (40.3%) from deep on the year and has taken just 20 shots within the arc.

“To me they’re a scary team offensively, because they can shoot and haven’t shot it well consistently,” Self said.

K-State’s rotation has fluctuated quite a bit from game to game. Most recently, head coach Jerome Tang has opted for a starting lineup of Hausen, Hawkins and N’Guessan joined in the backcourt by transfers Dug McDaniel, a former teammate of Dickinson’s at Michigan, and Jones, from Cal State Fullerton.

Stats don’t flatter the Wildcats this season. They rank 14th in the Big 12 in scoring offense and 13th in scoring defense and have been particularly deficient on the glass, where despite the efforts of Hawkins and N’Guessan they are last in the league in rebounding (33.9 per game) and defensive rebounding (23.2, 308th in the nation).

“They’re going to be desperate because they’re under .500, but we’re going to be desperate too because we’re in the middle of the pack of Big 12 rankings right now,” Griffen said on Friday. “We don’t have any room for error right now either. It’s going to be two desperate teams playing, and we’re going to be on our home floor, so we have to be even more desperate than them.”

Tang has split his four matchups with KU since taking over. The rivals will face off a second time in Manhattan on Feb. 8.

    Keep an eye out

The most salient storyline entering Saturday’s game for KU is the impending absence of Adams.

Adams has been a fixture in KU’s starting lineup for so long that it’s hard to conceive of one without him. (Self said on Friday he hasn’t decided whom to start yet.) Adams hasn’t missed a game since the Jayhawks played Providence in the Sweet 16 in 2022, meaning he has appeared in 89 in a row, and he has started 84 of them, including every game this season.

“He’s played so well the last four games,” Self said. “He’s been without question our best and most consistent performer. I think that’s a blow, but it’s also a great opportunity … Hopefully somebody can develop through this as well.”

One of the main assets Adams provides KU is his versatility on defense as an extremely physical and athletic 6-foot-7 forward, allowing him to guard all five positions. That would have been useful against Hawkins and N’Guessan. Freshman center Flory Bidunga has shown flashes of being able to do the same and will be a likely candidate to occupy some of Adams’ minutes, especially given the Wildcats’ athleticism in the frontcourt. He and Dickinson will need to stay out of foul trouble, which has been a challenge at times for Bidunga in particular.

KU could also miss Adams’ intangibles.

“We have to pick up for his energy,” Griffen said. “He always has great energy on the court. You always know he’s on the court.”

The other players who can expect to stay on the floor longer in Adams’ absence are transfers Rylan Griffen and AJ Storr, who have both struggled to establish a rhythm this season on either side of the ball, Storr in particular.

Freshman wing Rakease Passmore, who acquitted himself well in spot minutes at ISU to the point Self said he was second to Adams in “production per minute,” might also find his way into the rotation, particularly if Griffen and Storr aren’t living up to expectations.

“AJ, Flory, Rylan (and) Rakease will have significantly bigger roles than what they’ve had thus far,” Self said. “So I see that certainly being different, and can we play small? Are we tough enough, can we rebound well enough to actually play small? Could we even play Rylan or Rakease at the 4 some — and AJ’s going to certainly have to play there some.”

One possible silver lining could be improved spacing for the Jayhawks. Opposing defenses have been known to sag off Adams in order to clog the paint, both preventing opportunities for guards to drive and denying possible paint touches for Dickinson. Especially against lineups with wings like Griffen, Passmore or Storr, opponents will have to respect the possibility of 3-pointers a bit more.

  • Raiders’ Maxx Crosby shares who he prefers playing between Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson

Maxx Crosby is sounding even more like a Buffalo Bills fan by the day.

Just a day after he said he thinks the Bills are ready to make a run at the Super Bowl, the four-time Pro Bowler dropped another nugget when it comes to the Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson debate before their AFC Divisional Round clash on Sunday. His pick? None other than No. 17 up in Buffalo.

“I might say I’d rather go against Lamar with all respect,” said Crosby while appearing on Good Morning Football on Friday. “They’re both incredible, but I think Josh Allen has shown it over and over again. Even in the losses to the (Kansas City) Chiefs in those big games in the playoffs, Josh Allen was still having career games, he just didn’t have the ball last. So I feel like Josh Allen, he’s got the clutch gene for sure and he is so dangerous running and throwing the ball.”

It’s one thing to hear this from a football pundit. But a two-time All-Pro who’s played against both guys? That makes the comments hit different.

In two career matchups against Crosby’s Raiders, Allen is 2-0 with six total touchdowns scored against zero interceptions, an average of 281 passing yards per game, and an average passer rating of 120.2. Meanwhile, Jackson and his Ravens have a 0-2 record against Crosby during his Raiders tenure with two total touchdowns against one interception with an average of 241 passing yards per game and an average passer rating of 90.0.

Even as hot as Jackson has been on the field this year, one of 2024’s low points for him was a Week 2 loss to Crosby and the Raiders where the edge rusher got home with two sacks on the three-time first-team All-Pro. In fact, Crosby has four career sacks on Jackson in his first two matchups against him. As for Allen, he’s only been able to wrap him up for one sack over the first two meetings.

Who knows why Crosby is giving Buffalo so much love this week, but maybe once he becomes a free agent after the 2026 season this gives the team more reason to try and add him to the roster.

Raiders’ Maxx Crosby Shares Who He Prefers Playing Between Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson

In a recent interview, Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive end Maxx Crosby shared his thoughts on who he prefers playing against between Buffalo Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen and Baltimore Ravens’ quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Crosby admitted that both Allen and Jackson are incredibly talented and present unique challenges for opposing defenses. However, when asked to choose between the two, Crosby revealed that he enjoys facing off against Lamar Jackson more.

According to Crosby, Jackson’s elusive running ability and dual-threat capability make him a more exciting and unpredictable opponent on the field. The challenge of trying to contain Jackson and prevent him from making big plays with both his arm and legs keeps Crosby on his toes and pushes him to elevate his game.

While Crosby respects Josh Allen’s strong arm and accuracy as a passer, he finds the challenge of defending against Lamar Jackson’s dynamic skill set to be more thrilling and rewarding. As a competitor, Crosby is always looking for opportunities to test himself against the best, and facing off against Jackson provides him with an exciting challenge that he relishes.

Overall, Maxx Crosby enjoys the competition and the opportunity to showcase his skills against top-tier quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. As he continues to grow and develop as a player, Crosby looks forward to facing off against these talented quarterbacks and proving himself as a formidable opponent on the field.

  • Maxx Crosby says Josh Allen is more dangerous than Lamar Jackson: “He has the clutch gene”

There is a large possibility that the Divisional Round playoff game between the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills will come down to one final drive from the MVP quarterbacks; Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen. Who would you rather have with the ball in their hands if you were on the other side of the situation needing a stop?

Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby was on Good Morning Football Friday on NFL Network and the hosts asked the All-Pro pass rusher which of the two quarterbacks he’d rather face in a “gotta have it” situation.

If you read the headline, you already know what he had to say.

The scenario is hanging onto a five-point lead with 90 seconds left in the game, who would be tougher to defend on a game-winning drive?

“I’ve played both of them. Both are incredible talents. If I’m on defense, I might say I’d rather go against Lamar. No offense. They’re both incredible, but I think Josh Allen has shown it over and over again.”

While Jackson has laid some eggs in big moments, Allen hasn’t, and Crosby was quick to reference the Bills’ QB’s excellent postseason play. He knows wins aren’t a quarterback stat.

“Even in the losses to the Chiefs, in those big games in the playoffs, Josh Allen was still having career games, he just didn’t have the ball last. So I feel like Josh Allen, he’s got the clutch gene for sure.”

In January of 2022, we have frequently looked back at the “13 seconds” game as a huge disappointment in Bills history. Almost this exact situation played out and Allen rose to the occasion.

With 62 seconds left (that’s less than 90), the Bills got the ball down four points. You need a touchdown to win. Allen found Gabe Davis down the left sideline on second down for 28 yards, then Davis again for 12 yards on the next play. Two plays later, Emmanuel Sanders caught a pass for 16 yards. With 17 seconds left, Allen lasered a ball to Gabe Davis for a 19-yard touchdown with 0:13 on the clock. It took Allen’s offense less than 50 seconds to move the entire length of the field for the go-ahead score. That all came after the Bills converted two fourth downs and a two-point conversion on the previous drive.

Last year, it was a bit of a different story. With 8:23 left in the game, the Bills got the ball down three points. Allen placed a perfect deep shot to Stefon Diggs but it went through the veteran’s hands. Instead, Allen led a methodical drive to steal as much clock as possible, burning almost seven minutes while getting into position for a game-tying field goal.

In two of the last three years, Allen has led fourth-quarter drives against Kansas City that could have ended the game.

“He’s so dangerous running and throwing the ball. He can make all the throws,” added Crosby. “Also, he’s as big as me, so that being a-whole-nother challenge.”

Crosby’s Raiders barely beat anyone in 2024, but they felled the Ravens and Jackson in Week 2.

Allen has only played the Raiders twice, with Crosby nabbing a sack in 2020. Buffalo won in convincing fashion with Allen throwing for 288 yards and two touchdowns.

Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby has raised eyebrows with his recent comments about Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. In an interview with ESPN, Crosby declared that Allen is more dangerous than reigning MVP Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens.

Crosby explained his reasoning by pointing to Allen’s ability to come through in clutch situations. “Josh just has that clutch gene,” Crosby stated. “When the game is on the line, you know he’s going to make a big play. He’s fearless and never backs down from a challenge.”

While Jackson is known for his electrifying speed and playmaking ability, Crosby believes Allen’s mental toughness and ability to perform under pressure set him apart. “Lamar is a great player, don’t get me wrong. But when it comes down to it, I’d rather have Josh leading my team in a must-win situation,” Crosby added.

The debate over who is the more dangerous quarterback will surely continue among fans and analysts, but Crosby’s bold statement adds an interesting twist to the conversation. As the NFL season progresses, all eyes will be on Allen and Jackson to see who will emerge as the true standout performer.

  • Kat Dennings Calls Tim Allen Her ‘Favorite TV Dad of All Time’ (Exclusive)

Kat Dennings and Tim Allen are a father-daughter match made in TV heaven!

Over the course of her decades-long career, the actress, 38, has had her fair share of on-screen dads. As she embarks on a brand-new journey with ABC’s Shifting Gears, Dennings reflects on her relationships with her former costars and exclusively tells PEOPLE why Allen, 71, holds a special place in her heart.

“Tim Allen, I will say, is my favorite TV dad of all time. It’s been a real joy doing this show,” she says, also noting that the actor’s crew has been with him since his days on Home Improvement, which ran from 1991 to 1999, and Last Man Standing, which lasted from 2011 to 2021. “They followed him through all of his projects, which I think is a real testament to him as a person.”

“We have a very funny banter. We really enjoy these scenes where we’re arguing. It’s really fun,” she adds of their on-camera rapport.

According to the show’s official logline, the new series follows Matt (Allen), a “stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop.” When his estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her two kids move back into his home, “the real restoration begins.”

Before Dennings got the call for Shifting Gears, she was in a “dark, sad moment in time,” feeling lost and unsure of her next move.

“I was like, ‘God, I don’t know what I want to do. I am just feeling so crazy,’” she recalls. When a friend suggested she think about what her “dream job” looked like, the 2 Broke Girls alum realized she wanted to do another multi-cam sitcom.

“Then the next day I got this call to do this show. So it felt like I wished for something and I got it. It just felt like a meant to be thing,” she continues. She also “grew up watching Home Improvement,” she says, so starring in a show alongside a “cultural mainstay” like Allen was a no-brainer.

“He’s Santa Claus [in The Santa Clause films] and Buzz Lightyear [in the Toy Story franchise]. He’s a big part of my consciousness growing up, so it was very surreal to work with him, but in a great way because he’s a very kind person,” she says.

While Allen may be her favorite TV dad to date, Dennings says she looks back fondly at all of her previous paternal costars. Some of them include the late Bob Saget, who played her father in the 2001–2002 sitcom Raising Dad.

“I’m so sad that he’s gone,” she says of Saget, who died at age 65 in January 2022. “But he was a lovely, lovely person.”

In 2005’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Dennings played Marla, the stepdaughter of Steve Carell‘s title character. She describes the movie as “such a moment in time.” Not only did it become Carell’s breakout film, but the hit comedy was also Judd Apatow‘s directorial debut.

Dennings recalls feeling an anxious energy on set from the cast and crew, who were all banking on the movie’s success.

“Steve Carell, I remember him being like, ‘God, I hope this works out.’ And he had just done The Office pilot or something like that, and now he’s one of the biggest stars in the world, rightly so,” she says. “He is the loveliest man you’ll ever know.”

“I’ve been very lucky. I’ve had very good experiences,” she adds of her screen dads.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, actress Kat Dennings couldn’t help but gush about her experience working with actor Tim Allen on the hit sitcom “Last Man Standing.” The 35-year-old star revealed that Allen, who played her on-screen father Mike Baxter on the show, has become her “favorite TV dad of all time.”

Dennings shared that working with Allen was a dream come true, and that he was incredibly supportive and kind on set. She praised his comedic timing and professionalism, and admitted that she learned a lot from him during their time together on the show.

“I grew up watching Tim on ‘Home Improvement,’ so getting to work with him was such a surreal and amazing experience for me,” Dennings said. “He truly is a talented actor and a wonderful person. I couldn’t have asked for a better TV dad.”

Dennings also expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to work on “Last Man Standing” and be a part of a show that resonated with so many viewers. She credited Allen and the rest of the cast and crew for creating a welcoming and inclusive environment on set.

Fans of Dennings and Allen are sure to appreciate the bond between the two actors, and it’s clear that their on-screen chemistry translated into a genuine friendship off-screen. • Tim Allen ‘Shifting Gears’ Is ABC’s Most-Streamed Series Premiere Ever

Tim Allen‘s new ABC sitcom “Shifting Gears” is revving its ratings engine. According to ABC, the series now stands as the most-watched ABC series premiere on streaming to date, via first seven days of views on both Hulu and the Hulu portion of Disney+.

Per the Alphabet net, the Jan. 8 premiere of “Shifting Gears” has now averaged close to 17 million views on multiplatform, including linear ABC (and subsequent repeats) and timeshifting, as well as Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and other digital platforms. That 16.95 million number is up 173% from the show’s initial live+same day delivery of 6.2 million viewers.

Take out the linear repeats, and the show’s seven-day multiplatform average is 12.45 million viewers — up 101% from its 6.2 million L+SD tally — and a 2.94 rating with adults 18-49, up 339% from its L+SD 18-49 average of 0.67.

According to ABC, this makes it the network’s most-watched debut since “The Conners” on Oct. 16, 2018. “Shifting Gears” stars Allen as Matt, “the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop,” per the official logline. “When Matt’s estranged daughter (Kat Dennings) and her kids move into his house, the real restoration begins.” Seann William Scott, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis also star.

Meanwhile, the “Abbott Elementary“/”It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” crossover, which also aired on Jan. 8, hit a series high for “Abbott” in streaming, via Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, according to the network.
