ATF agent’s wife tells of seeing husband shot at Riverview bowling alley
TAMPA — The wife of a federal agent who was shot outside a Riverview bowling alley last week took the witness stand Thursday in a Tampa courtroom and described a seemingly unprovoked altercation by a group of young people who tried to pick fights with strangers.
Courtney Murray sat with her shoulders hunched, her hands clasped in front of her, as she recounted a Friday night family outing that turned tense as the kids harassed patrons outside the Alley at Southshore on Big Bend Road.
Her husband, Matthew Murray, is an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who was off duty that night. He was among several people who tried to intervene, telling the group he was a law enforcement officer.
“He was telling them just to go home,” she said. “He said ‘you guys just need to leave.’ He said ‘we have kids.’”
She heard someone reply: “I don’t give a f— about your kids.”
It was shortly thereafter that Matthew Murray was shot in the neck. He remains hospitalized in intensive care, partially paralyzed.
Christopher Demarcus Smith, 18, is accused of shooting Murray.
Hillsborough Circuit Judge Lisa Allen ordered the 18-year-old to be held in jail without bail while he awaits trial on charges that include attempted murder.
The judge made the preliminary ruling before a defense attorney could make any arguments. A public defender appointed to represent Smith tried to persuade the judge to reconsider, noting that Smith has never before been in trouble with the law and attends high school classes online.
But the judge’s ruling remained the same.
A crowd of federal agents, some wearing polo shirts that bore the ATF insignia, packed the small courtroom for the hourlong hearing.
On the witness stand, Murray said she and her husband went out with their two children for a family night at the bowling alley. They were there with friends, including their children’s baseball coaches, for a few hours. About 10:30 p.m., as the kids played in an arcade, they readied to leave.
Assistant State Attorney Kevin Riley played a series of surveillance videos taken from the bowling alley pausing at certain frames to ask for Murray to describe what was happening.
She pointed out a group of people – two young women and two young men. They stood in the crowd near the exit as she kept an eye on her children. She described one of the men as “super skinny,” wearing ripped jeans and walking with a noticeable limp. She identified him as Smith.
The group did not say anything to her or anyone with her, she said.
Later, as the family stepped outside to leave, they encountered the foursome. They were trying to pick fights with strangers, she said.
“My husband was trying to deescalate the situation,” she said. “It was like we walked into an ambush.”
She was asked specifically what Smith was doing.
“He was jumping around,” she said, “trying to fight.”

She said he didn’t seem to target anyone in particular. Her kids began to cry, she said. She moved to her car, eager to leave, as her husband and others tried to calm the group.
She went to her car, put her kids inside, then returned to where her husband stood. It was then that he got shot.
Hillsborough County sheriff’s Detective Keaton Bruce came to the hospital and found Agent Murray with a cast around his neck. Murray was still in critical condition and Bruce was unable to interview him about the shooting.
He obtained a statement from Murray’s wife and video footage of the shooting from the bowling alley. One bit of video, taken from a Tesla vehicle in the parking lot, captured images of Smith holding a gun in his right hand, the detective testified.
Through interviewing witnesses, he learned Smith’s name. He found him at a home in Riverview, where he lives with a woman described as his legal guardian. When the detective saw Smith, he noticed he walked with a limp, consistent with the description of the shooter.
After being read his rights, Smith agreed to be interviewed. He admitted that he’d shot Murray, the detective said. But he claimed it was in self defense. He spoke of being struck in the shoulder and seeing Murray on top of his friend, the detective said.
“Does the video corroborate that?” the prosecutor asked.
“No,” Bruce said, “it doesn’t.”
Smith told the detective he held the gun about a foot away from Murray when he fired. He said he didn’t aim at anything, the detective said. He claimed he “blacked out” and couldn’t remember what he did with the gun afterward.
The detective said video shows Smith clearly put the gun back in his waistband after firing.
Hillsborough State Attorney Suzy Lopez told reporters after the hearing that the gun Smith is believed to have used has not been located. She reiterated her office’s position that Smith needs to remain jailed.
“That was the only way that we could keep the community safe,” she said.
If he’s convicted as charged, Smith faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison.

West Virginia to hire Oklahoma’s Zac Alley as defensive coordinator
West Virginia is set to hire Zac Alley as its next defensive coordinator, On3’s Pete Nakos confirmed. He spent this season at Oklahoma after previously working with new WVU coach Rich Rodriguez at Jacksonville State.
Alley spent two years under Rodriguez with the Gamecocks before making his way to Norman this year. The Sooners ranked No. 5 in the SEC in total defense in their first year in the league, and their 115.08 rush yards allowed also ranked Top-5 in the league.
As Rodriguez makes his return to West Virginia, Alley’s name came up as a potential target for defensive coordinator. He addressed that speculation on Friday after OU’s bowl game loss to Navy and indicated he was coming back.
“Every year, there’s going to be something that comes up with jobs and whatnot,” Alley said. “Man, but I’m just excited about our team. I think coming back next season, we’re going to have a great opportunity to be successful, be a top defense in the country, and hopefully we got some young guys who can come along to help us do that.”

Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator Zac Alley is close to being named the next defensive coordinator at West Virginia, according to a report.
That’s per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who notes that Alley previously worked for new West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez at Jacksonville State. Rodriguez was named WVU’s head coach earlier this month, replacing Neal Brown.
Alley spent 1 season at Oklahoma as Brent Venables brought him to Norman ahead of the 2024 season to replace Ted Roof, who served in that role for the Sooners during the first 2 years of the Venables era. Alley previously worked under Venables as a student assistant and graduate assistant at Clemson during the early part of his coaching career.
Although Oklahoma suffered through a difficult season overall, its defense performed well for much of the season. OU allowed 4.94 yards per play this season, which ranked 25th nationally.
Oklahoma’s other co-defensive coordinator for the 2024 season was Todd Bates, who also serves as the program’s defensive tackles coach. Venables, of course, also has a significant role in game-planning OU’s defense on a week-to-week basis.
Zac Alley’s reported move to West Virginia means Oklahoma will be changing both coordinators for a second consecutive offseason. On the offensive side of the ball, OU has already hired Ben Arbuckle away from Washington State to run the show on that side of the ball.
Alley’s departure from Oklahoma has not yet been confirmed by the program as of publication.

West Virginia Set to Hire Zac Alley as Defensive Coordinator
West Virginia’s search for a defensive coordinator has come to an end. Rich Rodriguez is set to bring on Zac Alley as the Mountaineers’ new leader on the defensive side of the ball, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN.
Alley, 30, is the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Oklahoma. Before reuniting with Brent Venables in Norman, Alley spent two years as the coordinator on Rodriguez’s staff at Jacksonville State. The two also spent the 2021 season together on Terry Bowden’s staff at UL Monroe where he was the youngest coordinator (27) at the FBS level.
In his two years at Jax State, Alley’s unit finished 33rd in scoring defense and 43rd in total defense. The Gamecocks were stout against the run, allowing just 2.8 yards per carry while causing a ton of havoc by creating 25 turnovers (16 interceptions) and a 13th-place finish nationally in sacks per game (2.9).
That success has carried over into his new post at Oklahoma in his first year on the job. The Sooners have seen drastic improvements in the four key defensive statistical categories, as shown below.
Oklahoma’s Defense
2023 (Before Alley)
2024 (With Alley)
Total Defense
389.7 (60th)
324.4 (20th)
Pass Defense
250.8 (100th)
218.6 (63rd)
Rush Defense
138.9 (42nd)
105.7 (11th)
Scoring Defense
23.5 (41st)
22.3 (31st)
Alley ran a lot of odd stack at Jacksonville State but mixed in a good dose of four-man configurations to keep the offense off-balance. During his one year at Oklahoma, he adapted to Venables’ 4-2-5 scheme but did implement some three-man looks, which helped the Sooners’ defense considerably.
He’s a perfect fit for what Rodriguez wants in his defensive play-caller – someone who is aggressive and prioritizes creating takeaways. On third downs, he tends to put a lot of faith in his secondary and bring a lot of pressure to overwhelm the offensive line and force the quarterback to rush his progressions.

#West #Virginia #Set #Hire #Zac #Alley #Defensive #CoordinatorOklahoma DC Zac Alley addresses future amid West Virginia speculation
Zac Alley’s first season at Oklahoma ended in disappointment, but the team’s first-year defensive coordinator said he was “ready to get to work” for 2025 in the moments shortly after OU’s season-ending loss in the Armed Forces Bowl.
Alley’s defense allowed 21 unanswered points to Navy in a 21-20 loss Friday afternoon in Fort Worth, but attention quickly shifted from the Sooners’ performance against the Midshipmen to Alley’s own future in Norman. Making an appearance on Oklahoma’s in-house postgame radio show, Alley was asked about the rumors circulating about his future at OU, as his name has been linked to the defensive coordinator opening at West Virginia this week.
“Every year, there’s going to be something that comes up with jobs and whatnot, man, but I’m just excited about our team,” Alley said. “I think coming back next season, we’re going to have a great opportunity to be successful, be a top defense in the country, and hopefully we got some young guys who can come along to help us do that.”
Alley didn’t outright deny the West Virginia chatter, but he expressed optimism about the opportunity to build on his first season with Oklahoma, where he took the reins of the defense under his longtime mentor, Brent Venables, and helped the unit take a significant step forward in 2024.

Prior to Friday’s bowl game, Oklahoma’s defense made notable strides in its first season with Alley at the helm. The Sooners finished the regular season top-15 in run defense (105.8 yards allowed per game) while holding opponents to 2.91 yards per carry. Oklahoma allowed fewer passing yards this season than it did a year ago, despite giving up some untimely explosive plays through the air. The defense also allowed nearly 70 yards fewer per game and half a yard less per play than it did in 2023.
Under Alley, Oklahoma’s defense also limited teams to 21.6 points per game during the regular season, which was 35thnationally and nearly a field goal better than the unit was in 2023. The Sooners also finished the regular season top-15 nationally in sacks while finishing 19th in defensive SP+ and seventh in defensive efficiency, according to ESPN. OU finished the 2023 season 38th in defensive SP+ and 11th in defensive efficiency.
Despite that progress in several areas this season, the Sooners were unable to close the year on a positive note. The defense allowed 21 unanswered points to Navy on Friday, including a 95-yard rushing touchdown by Navy quarterback Blake Horvath that tied the game in the third quarter. It was the longest run in Navy’s history and the longest surrendered by Oklahoma’s defense since 1997 against Kansas. Horvath added the go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter, and Oklahoma was unable to convert a game-winning 2-point conversion with six seconds left, ultimately falling 21-20 and finishing the year 6-7 for the second time in three seasons under Venables.
“I think the guys in there, just we had a lot of guys get a lot of experience this year,” Alley said. “We return a majority of the defense, which should help us to be better. I wish we could’ve won this one, obviously, but man just the relentless effort and determination that our guys have shown all season, through all the hardship, the ups and downs, the adversity, obviously; I’m just proud of them, and I’m ready to get to work.”
While Alley indicated he’s eager to get to work building next year’s defense at Oklahoma, his name has been linked to the same position at West Virginia, where Rich Rodriguez was recently hired as head coach. Alley and Rodriguez worked together at Jacksonville State and ULM for three seasons. The two were coordinators together at ULM in 2021 on Terry Bowden’s staff, and when Rodriguez was hired as head coach at Jacksonville State in 2022, he tabbed Alley as his defensive coordinator, a role he held for two seasons before reuniting with Venables at Oklahoma.
Alley was hired in January, replacing Ted Roof as Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He received a three-year contract with an annual average salary of $900,000, which was more than four times what he was earning in his final season at Jacksonville State. Alley earned $850,000 in his first season with the Sooners, which made him the lowest-compensated defensive coordinator in the 16-team SEC. According to his contract, he is set to receive an increase of $50,000 each year on Feb. 1. His contract runs through Jan. 31, 2027.
Oklahoma defensive coordinator Zac Alley has been the subject of speculation regarding a potential move to West Virginia, but he recently addressed his future with the Sooners. In a recent interview, Alley emphasized his commitment to Oklahoma and expressed his excitement about the direction of the program. He stated that he is fully focused on helping the Sooners achieve their goals and is not currently looking to make a move elsewhere.
Alley’s leadership has been instrumental in the success of the Oklahoma defense, and his players have praised his coaching style and attention to detail. Under his guidance, the Sooners have become a formidable unit on the field.
While the rumors of a potential move to West Virginia may continue to swirl, Alley’s words indicate that he is content with his current position and is not actively seeking a change. Oklahoma fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their defensive coordinator is fully committed to the program and eager to continue building on their success.

Report: WVU finalizing deal to make Oklahoma’s Alley defensive coordinator
West Virginia is finalizing a deal to make Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Zac Alley their defensive coordinator according to report.
Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that West Virginia was in the process of finalizing a three-year deal to take over the defensive coordinator spot in Morgantown.
Alley had been the key target of the search.
Alley was hired by the Sooners in January of 2024 but spent the two seasons before that working under Rodriguez as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Jacksonville State. Those ties made him an immediate candidate for the position and his addition gives Rodriguez a strong building block for his initial coaching staff in his return to Morgantown.
Alley had signed a three-year contract with the Sooners which had a base pay of $850,000 this past season and was set to see $50,000 raises in 2025 and 2026. That was a significant jump from the $213,800 that he was under contract for in his final season at Jacksonville State.
That signals a significant investment from West Virginia on the defensive side of the ball.
As the play caller on defense, Oklahoma was ranked 21st in total defense this past season allowing 318.2 yards per game and was tied for 18th in yards per play allowed at just 4.87. The Sooners were ranked 34th in scoring defense permitting just 21.58 points per contest.
During his time at Jacksonville State, Alley’s defense ranked 33rd in scoring defense at 21.2 points per game and 43rd in total defense helping to lead the Gamecocks to a 9-4 overall record in 2023. His unit had success in holding opponents to 2.8 yards per rush, or fourth nationally, was ranked eighth in tackles for loss with 414 and ninth in turnovers gained with 25.
The 2023 Gamecocks defense also held opponents to just 4.8 yards per play, good for 12th nationally and was able to get off the field on third down ranking 22nd in conversion percentage at 32.7.
The 2022 unit led the nation at the FCS level with 15 fumble recoveries and was 11th in red zone defense. The Gamecocks gave up 21 points or fewer in seven of 11 games.
Prior to his arrival at Jacksonville State, Alley was the youngest defensive coordinator in the country at Louisiana-Monroe and improved in every statistical category on defense from the previous season.
Alley also previously served as the co-special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach at Boise State as well as a defensive coaching internship with the Carolina Panthers where he assisted with the linebackers. He got his start as a student assistant at Clemson in 2011 and spent four years in that role working under Brent Venables and graduated from the school.
WVSports.com will have more on Alley in the near future.
According to reports, West Virginia University is finalizing a deal to make Oklahoma’s Brian Odom their new defensive coordinator. Odom has served as the inside linebackers coach for the Sooners for the past three seasons and is known for his aggressive defensive schemes. This move comes after former WVU defensive coordinator Vic Koenning resigned amid allegations of mistreatment of players. The Mountaineers are hoping that Odom can bring a fresh perspective to their defense and help them improve on their 5-7 record from last season.
Odom is highly regarded in the coaching world and has a proven track record of developing talented defensive players. His hiring would be a big win for WVU as they look to rebuild their defense and compete in the tough Big 12 conference.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Oklahoma Defensive Coordinator Zac Alley Comments on West Virginia Rumors
West Virginia head coach Rich Rodriguez is still searching for his defensive coordinator, but he should have his guy sometime in the next handful of days. The two names that have been at the top of that list are Louisiana Tech’s Jeremiah Johnson and Oklahoma’s Zac Alley.
Alley could be viewed as the top choice considering how fast he’s climbed the coaching ladder and the fact that there is some sort of familiarity as he has three years of working with Rich Rodriguez, during his stints at UL Monroe and Jacksonville State.
Following Oklahoma’s loss to Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl. the Sooners’ defensive coordinator was asked about the West Virginia rumors in a radio interview.
“Every year, there’s going to be something that comes up with jobs and whatnot, man, but I’m just excited about our team,” Alley said. “I think coming back next season, we’re going to have a great opportunity to be successful, be a top defense in the country, and hopefully, we got some young guys who can come along to help us do that.”
