  • Former UCLA Bruins Star Making Shocking NBA All-Star Case

Former UCLA Bruins Star Making Shocking NBA All-Star Case

Heading into the 2024-25 NBA season, I don’t think anyone had “breakout year for Norman Powell” on their bingo card.

    Nevertheless, here we are.

The Los Angeles Clippers guard has been absolutely magnificent this season, averaging 24.2 points per game on 49.5/46.6/84.5 shooting splits.

Over his last five contests, Powell is registering 28.2 points a night and has buried 18 three-pointers throughout that stretch.

With the NBA All-Star Game right around the corner, the former UCLA Bruins star is making a serious case to earn the first selection of his career, and at the age of 31, no less.

Don’t get it twisted: Powell has always been a good scorer. He has approached 20 points per game twice, logging 18.6 points per game and then 19 per game in 2020-21 and 2021-22, respectively.

But we have never seen this type of production from Powell.

It’s not just that he is averaging a career high in points. It’s also that, in spite of the increased volume, he is shattering his lifetime best for three-point percentage and is currently equaling his career-high for field-goal percentage.

What’s more, he boasts a true-shooting percentage of 64.1 percent, the best of his career.

Additionally, Powell is a very solid defender, making him a legitimate two-way player for a team that was in desperate need of a boost on both ends of the floor in Kawhi Leonard’s absence.

Consider this: in spite of Leonard having not yet played a game this season, the Clippers are 18-13 and sit in first place in the Pacific Division.

That’s a testament to just how terrific Powell has been, and the fact that he is recording .161 win shares per 48 minutes (yet another career high) is evidence to just how vital the UCLA product has been to Los Angeles’ surprising success.

Early on in his NBA tenure with the Toronto Raptors, no one would have ever imagined that Powell would be an All-Star one day, but it’s very difficult to argue against the case he is making.

Powell isn’t chucking. He isn’t one-dimensional. He is doing a little bit of everything, and for that, he deserves major recognition.

Former UCLA Bruins star Lonzo Ball is making a shocking case for a spot on the NBA All-Star team this season. Ball, who now plays for the Chicago Bulls, has been dominating on the court and proving his worth as a top player in the league.

Ball has been putting up impressive numbers this season, averaging nearly a triple-double with 18.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 9.8 assists per game. His playmaking abilities and court vision have been on full display, leading the Bulls to a strong start to the season.

Despite facing tough competition in the Eastern Conference, Ball has been standing out among the crowd and making a strong case for his first All-Star appearance. His impact on both ends of the floor, as well as his leadership on the court, have not gone unnoticed by fans and analysts alike.

With the All-Star voting just around the corner, it will be interesting to see if Ball’s stellar play will earn him a spot among the league’s best players. Keep an eye on Lonzo Ball as he continues to make waves in the NBA and potentially secure a spot in the upcoming All-Star game.

  • Blazers Could Face Shorthanded Lakers Team with LA All-Star Downgraded

Blazers Could Face Shorthanded Lakers Team with LA All-Star Downgraded

The Portland Trail Blazers will be taking on the Los Angeles Lakers tonight for their first game in the 2025 year. Entering this game, it seems that Portland may see a shorthanded Lakers squad, possibly giving them an opening to snatch the game.

Lakers star big Anthony Davis has been downgraded to doubtful for this contest. Davis was originally listed as questionable but now seems in danger of missing this game.

Guard Gabe Vincent has also been downgraded to doubtful for the Lakers. This leaves Los Angeles with only a handful of players entering this game with Portland.

If Davis misses this game, it would be a massive loss for the Lakers. Davis has been the heart and soul of the team this season and dominated the Trail Blazers when the two teams matched up earlier this season.

The star posted 30 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, dished out one assist, swiped two steals, and blocked five shots. Davis was everywhere for the Lakers as Los Angeles took down Portland in the game.

Lakers star LeBron James will need to step up if Davis does miss this contest. James missed the first game against Portland, setting up the strong performance from Davis.

Portland will look to exploit the lack of size that the Lakers will have without Davis, assuming he misses this game. Los Angeles is also dealing with different injuries to other big men on the roster, possibly leaving them very thin up front.

With Donovan Clingan, Robert Williams III, Deandre Ayton, and others, Portland could have a real advantage in the frontcourt. Los Angeles will need to find other ways to beat this team and the Trail Blazers size could work for them well.

The Trail Blazers sit toward the bottom of the Western Conference standings but they are only a few games back of competing for a playoff spot. With the new Play-In Tournament still around, Portland finds itself in a place that not many expected it to be in.

While a playoff run is unlikely, weirder things have happened in the NBA before. If Portland can put together a nice string of games, they could find themselves directly in the thick of it all.

The Portland Trail Blazers may have a favorable matchup in their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Lakers, as reports indicate that the Lakers could be without one of their key players.

According to sources, the Lakers’ All-Star player has been downgraded and may not be available to play in the upcoming game against the Blazers. This development could significantly impact the Lakers’ lineup and give the Blazers an advantage on the court.

With the Lakers potentially shorthanded, the Blazers will need to capitalize on this opportunity and bring their A-game to secure a victory. This game could be a crucial moment for the Blazers to gain momentum and continue their push towards the playoffs.

Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on the status of the Lakers’ All-Star player and how it will affect the outcome of the game. Stay tuned for more updates as the game approaches.

  • Where Steph, Warriors stars rank in NBA All-Star fan voting

Where Steph, Warriors stars rank in NBA All-Star fan voting

Where Steph, Warriors stars rank in NBA All-Star fan voting originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

With the NBA All-Star Game only a few weeks away, the league has released the first round of fan votes, with two Warriors making the list.

Andrew Wiggins is eighth among frontcourt players, while Steph Curry is third among guards in the Western Conference.

The All-Star starting lineup consists of three frontcourt players and two guards, with an additional seven reserves chosen by the head coaches of each team.

Fan votes account for 50 percent of the All-Star vote, with the other half coming from NBA players and media members.

Curry, a 10-time All-Star, sits behind only Luka Dončić of the Dallas Mavericks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the fan vote. With Dončić out with a severe calf strain, it’s not likely he will be able to suit up for the festivities on Feb. 14-16, which would put Curry in the starting lineup.

Having the Golden State superstar in the starting lineup for the first All-Star Game in the history of Chase Center would be a magical moment.

The NBA All-Star fan voting results are in, and Warriors fans will be happy to see that Steph Curry and other Golden State stars are among the top vote-getters.

Steph Curry, the two-time MVP and six-time All-Star, is currently leading the Western Conference guards in voting. His incredible scoring ability and leadership on the court have made him a fan favorite, and it’s no surprise to see him at the top of the list.

Joining Curry in the top of the voting standings are his teammates Draymond Green and Klay Thompson. Green, known for his defensive prowess and playmaking ability, is currently holding a strong position in the frontcourt voting. Thompson, despite being sidelined with injury, has garnered enough support to be among the top guards in the Western Conference.

With the All-Star game just around the corner, it’s looking like the Warriors will be well-represented in the starting lineup. Fans can continue to vote for their favorite players until the final results are announced, but it’s clear that Steph Curry and his fellow Warriors stars are among the most popular choices.

  • Celtics Need More Campaigning For Two Players To Become All-Star Starters

Celtics Need More Campaigning For Two Players To Become All-Star Starters

Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is in line at the moment to start the NBA All-Star Game for a third consecutive season.

Jaylen Brown and Derrick White have work to do if they want the same honor, though.

The NBA released its first fan returns Thursday — fans make up 50% of the All-Star vote while a media panel and players account for 25% each — as the Celtics trio landed in the top 10 in voting at their respective positions. Tatum garnered nearly 1.4 million votes to put him only behind Giannis Antetokounmpo (1.7 million) for frontcourt players in the Eastern Conference. Brown came in fifth at 433,636 votes while White was 10th for guards at 120,706.

The Celtics surely will do more campaigning on White’s behalf in the coming weeks with the All-Star Game just over a month away. Unlike Tatum and Brown, White has never participated in the marquee exhibition event. Tatum is a five-time All-Star while Brown received the recognition three times, including each of the past two seasons.

White, a two-time All-Defensive selection, blossomed into a star with the Celtics and is averaging a career-high 16.8 points this season while shooting 45.2% from the field and 39.2% from 3-point range. He’s also contributing 4.6 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. But a cold spell during December might have hurt White’s All-Star chances.

    Story continues below advertisement

Tatum seems like a lock to start the contest while Brown has a good shot to join him at the Chase Center in San Francisco on Feb. 16.

The All-Star Game will look much different this season with the NBA going to a new format to try to breathe some life back into the game. The game will take on the look of a mini-tournament with four teams and three games. The teams will consist of eight players and Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith will draft the teams on Feb. 6. The fourth team will be the winning team from the Rising Stars game.

The Boston Celtics are in need of some serious campaigning for two of their standout players to become All-Star starters this season. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have been putting up impressive numbers and playing at a high level, but they may need a little extra push to secure their spots in the starting lineup.

Tatum, who is averaging 25.0 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game this season, has been a key player for the Celtics and has shown that he can compete with the best in the league. Brown, on the other hand, is averaging 24.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game and has been a consistent scorer for the team.

With the All-Star game approaching, it’s time for Celtics fans and supporters to step up and show their support for Tatum and Brown. Whether it’s through social media campaigns, voting, or simply spreading the word about their impressive performances, every bit helps in getting these two deserving players the recognition they deserve.

So let’s rally together and make sure that Tatum and Brown get the All-Star starting spots they deserve. The Celtics need more campaigning for these two players, so let’s make it happen! #TatumBrownAllStars.

  • LeBron James, Stephen Curry 3rd at positions in NBA All-Star voting

LeBron James, Stephen Curry 3rd at positions in NBA All-Star voting

The NBA’s first round of All-Star voting was released Thursday afternoon, and in the latest sign of a transition in eras in the association, LeBron James and Stephen Curry rank third at their respective positions.

James sits third overall in the West frontcourt voting — still in a starting spot — with 1.17 million votes, sitting behind Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic (1.4 million votes) and Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (1.27 million), though James has a healthy lead for the third and final starting spot over Los Angeles Lakers teammate Anthony Davis and San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama, who each have over 900,000 votes cast.

Golden State‘s Curry, meanwhile, could be finding himself coming off the bench for a second straight year out West, as he sits behind Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (1.05 million votes) and Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic, whose 870,071 votes is about 60,000 ahead of Curry’s tally.

Doncic, however, is out for the next several weeks with a calf strain, which could allow Curry to get himself back in the mix to start in his home All-Star Game in San Francisco in February.

In the East, meanwhile, Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo — after snapping James’ seven-year streak as the top vote-getter last year — is leading all vote-getters again this year with 1.7 million votes cast thus far. He is followed by Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum (1.38 million), who is on course to make his sixth consecutive All-Star Game, while New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns had the third starting spot with just over 1 million votes.

No other East frontcourt player has even half a million votes, putting those three in a very strong position to finish the voting in those three spots.

The closest battle of all the position groups comes in the East backcourt, where LaMelo Ball, with just under a million votes, is in first, but Donovan Mitchell of the NBA-leading Cleveland Cavaliers is just 13,000 votes ahead of Bucks guard Damian Lillard for the second starting spot in the East.

Jalen Brunson is in fourth with just under 500,000 votes, and Trae Young is fifth with just over 350,000.

Voting totals will be updated again Jan. 9 and Jan. 16, with voting concluding on Monday, Jan. 20. Fan voting makes up 50% of the voting when it comes to who starts, with media and player voting accounting for 25% each.

The starters for both conferences will be announced Jan. 23, and the reserves will be unveiled a week later.

The NBA All-Star voting results are in and two of the league’s biggest stars, LeBron James and Stephen Curry, have landed in 3rd place at their respective positions.

LeBron James, a 17-time All-Star and one of the greatest players of all time, received the 3rd most votes among Western Conference forwards. Despite his impressive resume and continued dominance on the court, James found himself behind Kevin Durant and Nikola Jokic in the voting this year.

On the other hand, Stephen Curry, a 7-time All-Star and one of the best shooters in NBA history, also finished in 3rd place among Western Conference guards. Curry, who has been putting up incredible numbers this season, was edged out by Luka Doncic and Ja Morant in the voting.

While both LeBron James and Stephen Curry may not have secured the top spot in All-Star voting this year, there is no doubt that they will still be major attractions at the All-Star Game and will continue to showcase their incredible talent on the court.

  • NBA All-Star voting 2025: What fans got right and wrong on early ballots

NBA All-Star voting 2025: What fans got right and wrong on early ballots

There are always more deserving players for the NBA All-Star Game than there are spots on the team. As the league changes to a bizarre new All-Star format this season, the voting for the starters remains the same. Three front-court players and two backcourt players will be chosen from each conference, with the fan vote making up 50 percent of the final tally, and the player vote and media vote making up the other 25 percent each.

The first round of fan voting has been released for the 2025 NBA All-Star Game, and there are already some big hits and misses. The league will release two more updates this month before the starters are revealed on Thursday, Jan. 23. The All-Star reserves will be announced on Jan. 30. Read our take the new NBA All-Star format here.

The 2025 NBA All-Star Game will take place on Sun, Feb 16, 2025 at the Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors. Here’s a first look at 2025 NBA All-Star voting, with a breakdown of what the fans got right and wrong.

2025 NBA All-Star Game early voting results
    via Shams Charnia

What fans got right in 2025 NBA All-Star Game voting so far

    • The Eastern Conference front-court is perfect: Lock it in right now: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jayson Tatum, and Karl-Anthony Towns should all be starters in the Eastern Conference. Antetokounmpo is a serious MVP candidate right now, and you can make a case that he’s having the best year of his career after carrying the Bucks to the NBA Cup title. Tatum has been fantastic again for the Celtics, and is on his way to being named First-Team All-NBA for the fourth straight seasons. KAT has been as good as the Knicks could have hoped after swinging a bold trade for him just before the season started. The big man is averaging 25 points per game on stunning 66.2 percent true shooting while also leading the league in rebounding percentage. Other names need not apply, because this should be the East front-court.
    • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is lapping the field for backcourt votes: The best guard in the NBA resides in Oklahoma City. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is currently in a too-close-to-call MVP race with Nikola Jokic, and he’s been carrying the Thunder to the top of the West after a significant hip injury to his top teammate, Chet Holmgren. SGA pops off for 30+ points seemingly every night with the league’s most unstoppable mid-range scoring package. It would have been understandable if Stephen Curry jumped him in voting with the game taking place at his home arena, but the fans did well to recognize Gilgeous-Alexander’s greatness.
    • Donovan Mitchell deserves to be rewarded for the Cavs’ amazing start: The Cleveland Cavaliers have been the best team in the NBA to start the year with a 29-4 record to begin the season. Part of the reason the Cavs are so good is because they don’t need Mitchell to carry such a heavy load this year thanks to the development of their other players. The star guard is averaging his fewest field goal attempts and points per game since his rookie year, but he’s still been outstanding in his opportunities. The Cavs could get as many as three All-Stars (and Jarrett Allen will probably help headline snub lists), but they deserve to have a starter, and Mitchell remains the obvious pick even with a downtick in usage.

What fans got wrong in 2025 NBA All-Star Game voting so far

    • C’mon, LaMelo Ball should not be the East backcourt leading vote-getter: I’m as big of a LaMelo Ball guy as they come. I ranked him as the top prospect in the 2020 NBA Draft, and have been encouraged by his development ever since. Ball is having a fantastic year as one four players currently averaging more than 30 points per game, but he’s once again had trouble staying healthy and impacting winning. Charlotte’s record in games Ball has appeared in is only 6-16. He shouldn’t be starting ahead of Jalen Brunson in the East backcourt. Speaking of the East backcourt …
    • How did Darius Garland miss the top-10 of East backcourt voting? Garland has been sensational for Cleveland this year, and his return to stardom after a broken jaw last season is a major reason the Cavs have been so good thus far. I had to double-check this list to make sure I correctly read that Jordan Poole is in the top-10 of East backcourt voting, but Garland isn’t. Averaging 20.5 points and 6.7 assists per game while shooting 42.7 percent from three, Garland has a legit case to start for the East. He’s become one of the most underrated players in the league.
    • Victor Wembanyama should be starting this game for the West: It’s hard to get too mad at the fans for wanting to see LeBron James and Kevin Durant, though. Wemby has been better than both by establishing himself as the best defender in the league before he’s old enough to walk into a bar. He’s a clear All-NBA candidate this year, and he’s going to give the Spurs a chance to make the playoffs. Wemby is going to a long run of MVP contention coming up, and we don’t know how many more times we’ll see LeBron and KD in the All-Star Game. The young Spurs star should be a starter, but I’m not too mad about it. While we’re at it, someone please get Jaren Jackson Jr. a few more votes, because he’s been phenomenal for the Grizzlies this year.

The NBA All-Star voting for 2025 is in full swing, and fans have already cast their early ballots for their favorite players. As always, there are some surprises and some snubs in the voting results. Let’s take a look at what fans got right and wrong on the early ballots.

One of the biggest surprises on the early ballots is the inclusion of several young up-and-coming players who have been putting up impressive numbers this season. Players like Zion Williamson, Luka Doncic, and LaMelo Ball have all received a significant number of votes, showing that fans are recognizing the talent and potential of these rising stars.

However, there are also some notable snubs in the early voting results. Some established veterans who have been playing at a high level this season, such as LeBron James and Kevin Durant, have not received as many votes as expected. It seems that fans may be more focused on the new and exciting players in the league, rather than the proven stars.

Overall, the early NBA All-Star voting for 2025 has been a mix of surprises and disappointments. It will be interesting to see how the final rosters shape up as the voting continues and the coaches make their selections. Who do you think deserves a spot in the All-Star game this year? LeBron James and Stephen Curry, two of the biggest superstars in the NBA, are currently sitting in 3rd place at their respective positions in the All-Star voting. Despite their incredible skill and popularity, they are facing tough competition in this year’s All-Star race.

LeBron James, who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers, is currently behind Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the frontcourt voting for the Western Conference. Known for his incredible athleticism and basketball IQ, LeBron has been a perennial All-Star and is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

On the other hand, Stephen Curry, who plays for the Golden State Warriors, is currently behind Kyrie Irving and Bradley Beal in the backcourt voting for the Eastern Conference. Curry is known for his sharpshooting and playmaking abilities, and has led the Warriors to multiple NBA championships.

While it’s surprising to see these two superstars not leading in the All-Star voting, there is still time for fans to cast their votes and help them secure their spots in the starting lineup. With their talent and impact on the game, LeBron James and Stephen Curry are sure to be key players in this year’s All-Star game.

  • Antetokounmpo, Jokic and James among early NBA All-Star leading vote-getters

Antetokounmpo, Jokic and James among early NBA All-Star leading vote-getters

Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is the early leader in fan balloting for the NBA All-Star Game, and LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers seems well on his way toward extending his record and getting picked for a 21st time.

The first update on All-Star voting for this season’s revised game was released Thursday, with Antetokounmpo the overall leader with about 1.7 million votes. Denver’s Nikola Jokic is second overall with about 1.4 million votes, which is tops among all Western Conference players.

The 10 players on pace to be selected as starters, at least based on the fan balloting: Antetokounmpo, Boston’s Jayson Tatum, New York’s Karl-Anthony Towns, Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball and Cleveland’s Donovan Mitchell from the Eastern Conference, and Jokic, Phoenix’s Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dallas’ Luka Doncic and James from the West.

But there won’t be 10 starters this year for the All-Star Game, set to take place Feb. 16 in San Francisco. There will be more.

It’s the first year of a new All-Star format, one where there will be three games. The 24 All-Stars will be drafted into three teams of eight players apiece by TNT personalities and former NBA greats Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith.

Those three teams will be entered into a four-team tournament, with the remaining squad being the team of NBA rookies and second-year players that wins the Rising Stars event on All-Star Friday. There are two semifinal games, followed by the winners meeting in a championship game — with the first team to reach 40 points the winner of all three games.

It will be wildly different than last year, when the All-Star Game final score was 211-186 — the highest-scoring one in history.

    Voting continues through Jan. 20.

Fan voting makes up 50% of the All-Star starter selection formula, with media voting accounting for another 25% and voting by current NBA players counting for the remaining 25%.

The 10 players designated as starters — even though there technically will be at least 15 starters in the All-Star “games” — will be announced on Jan. 23, and the reserves that will be selected by NBA head coaches will be announced on Jan. 30.

Antetokounmpo has been on an absolute tear in his 11th season in Milwaukee, leading the NBA with a career-high 32.6 points per game while shooting 61.0 percent from the field and also adding 11.6 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.4 blocks. He led the Bucks (17-14) to the NBA Cup championship, and he’s motivated to add to his mantle later this year.

However, he’s not the only former NBA MVP looking for some more hardware. Jokić has continued his incredible run of all-around brilliance while leading the Nuggets to a 19-13 record. He ranks third in the league with averages of 30.7 points and 13.0 rebounds and second with 9.7 assists. He’s shooting 56.1 percent from the field and a blistering 49.2 percent from three-point range, by far the best mark of his career.

Tatum has been the driving force for the defending-champion Celtics, who rank second in the East with a 24-9 record. He leads Boston with 28.3 points, 9.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game while also adding 1.3 steals.

Oklahoma City Thunder star point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the only guard in either conference to have earned over 1,000,000 votes. The 26-year-old has led the Thunder to first place in the West with a 27-5 record and ranks second in the league with an average of 31.3 points per game. He’s also contributing 6.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.2 blocks.

Voting for the 2025 All-Star Game will conclude on Jan. 20 at 11:59 p.m. ET and the starters for the game will be revealed on Jan. 23 during TNT’s NBA Tip-Off before a doubleheader featuring the Bucks vs. the Miami Heat and the Celtics vs. the Los Angeles Lakers.

The format for this year’s All-Star Game will be very different, as it will be a four-team tournament featuring three teams of eight NBA All-Stars and the winning team from the Rising Stars Game. Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith will draft the three teams of All-Stars on Feb. 6. All-Star Weekend will kickoff on Feb. 14 and conclude with the All-Star Game on Feb. 16.
