  • Leonard Hamilton, Florida State’s all-time winningest coach, to resign at end of season

Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton is resigning following this season’s conclusion and will not return to the program for the 2025-26 season, the school announced on Monday.

Hamilton has been with the program since 2002 and has compiled a 456-290 record in 23 seasons at FSU and is 634-500 overall in 38 seasons in his career as a college head coach including stops at FSU, Miami and Oklahoma State. Hamilton was also 19-63 in one season (2000-01) coaching the Washington Wizards, led by Michael Jordan, in the NBA.

“I am deeply thankful for the tremendous support of our fans, alumni, and everyone associated with Florida State throughout my time here,” Hamilton said in a statement. “I am proud of the quality of the young men that it was my privilege to lead, for their faith in this program and in their belief in the philosophy that we tried to instill in them over the years. I have been blessed beyond words for the opportunity and the experience we’ve had here.”

    Seminoles won under Hamilton

The news of Hamilton not returning to the program comes amid a four-game losing streak and Florida State is currently 13-9 overall and 4-7 in ACC play this season.

However, Hamiton’s career at FSU will be remembered by his many succesful seasons includig several impressive NCAA Tournament runs.

Hamilton has guided Florida State to the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament three times in his tenure, including an appearance in the Elite Eight in 2017. The Seminoles reached the Sweet 16 in 2021 — the program’s last appearance in the Big Dance. Hamilton has led Florida State to 12 20-win seasons during his tenure.

Last of the ‘old guard’ of ACC coaches leaving

There has been an enormous amount of change throughout the ACC in the last few years. Conference realignment changed the landscape of college basketball with Cal, Stanford and SMU joining the league to expand membership to 18.

Some of the game’s most legendary coaches departed in the last few years. It started with former North Carolina coach Roy Williams stepping down in 2021. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski retired the following season, and then Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim retired in 2023.

The change in the ACC coaching world continued just days before the start of the 2024-25 season when Virginia coach Tony Bennett suddenly announced his retirement. Miami Jim Larrañaga, the winningest coach in program history, stepped down mid-season the day after Christmas. With Hamilton not returning, Clemson coach Brad Brownell, who has been coach of the Tigers will be the longest-tenured coach in the conference next season.

After 19 seasons at the helm of the Florida State Seminoles basketball program, Leonard Hamilton, the winningest coach in school history, has announced that he will be stepping down at the end of the season.

Hamilton, who has amassed a record 429 wins during his tenure, has led the Seminoles to unprecedented success, including multiple NCAA tournament appearances and a trip to the Elite Eight in 2018. Known for his defensive prowess and ability to develop players, Hamilton has been a pillar of consistency and excellence in Tallahassee.

In a statement released by the university, Hamilton expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the Seminoles and thanked the players, coaches, and fans who have supported him throughout his tenure. He also stated that he believes it is time for a new voice to lead the program and continue its upward trajectory.

As Florida State prepares to honor Hamilton in his final season, fans and players alike will undoubtedly look back on his legacy with fondness and appreciation for all that he has accomplished. The search for his successor will begin in earnest, but for now, the focus remains on finishing the season strong and sending Coach Hamilton out on a high note.

  • Steph Curry drops funny quip after rising on NBA all-time scoring list – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Father Time has yet to catch up to Warriors superstar Steph Curry, well, for the most part.

Curry’s 21 points in Golden State’s stunning 116-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night helped him leap Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. His instant reaction?

“You see the gray hair?” Curry joked to ESPN’s Jorge Sedano after the game. “That just means you’re blessed to keep playing this game at a high level. I thank God every day that this is a space I’ve been able to live in for 16 years. The names, I passed [Allen Iverson] a couple weeks ago, Ray today — guys I grew up watching in my generation who inspire me to love the game the way I do.

“So it’s definitely special. Shout out to Ray.”

With Wednesday’s performance, Curry has reached 24,515 points throughout his 16-season NBA career, passing Allen’s 24,505. He now is just 300 away from Patrick Ewing and less than 700 from Jerry West for 25th.

Los Angeles Lakers megastar LeBron James leads the list with 41,474 points.

This season, Curry, who turns 37 on March 14, is averaging 22.3 points on 44.2-percent shooting from the field and 40.5 percent from 3-point range, with 4.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists in 31.7 minutes through 38 games.

Perhaps his hair is the only indication of his age catching up to him.

Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry has been making history this season, as he continues to climb up the NBA all-time scoring list. And while he’s been piling up points on the court, he’s also been dropping some funny quips off the court.

The comment drew laughs from reporters and fans alike, showcasing Curry’s lighthearted and self-deprecating sense of humor. Despite his impressive scoring numbers, Curry always manages to keep things in perspective and stay humble.

  • 15 Points From History: Ejim eyes Gonzaga’s all-time scoring record on the road next Thursday | All Gonzaga Sports

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women rallied past the Pacific Tigers, 68-64, Thursday afternoon in a game that saw guard Yvonne Ejim come within 15 points of breaking the school’s all-time scoring record.

Ejim led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, finishing 15 points shy of surpassing Heather Bowman’s record of 2,165 career points.

The guard battled foul trouble early, picking up her fourth foul with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Although she spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench, Ejim returned with fewer than five minutes remaining and dominated down the stretch.

Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier praised her squad’s resilience during Ejim’s absence.

“Our team did a really nice job of weathering that storm when she was out. That’s something we talk about all the time,” Fortier said. “She is certainly the leader in charge, but we have a lot of other players who play really well. I certainly don’t like it when she’s out of the game, but I like to have her as an option because I think we play really well together when she’s in, too.”

Gonzaga fans would love nothing more than to see Ejim break the record at home when Gonzaga hosts Washington State next Saturday. However, the Bulldogs will head to Saint Mary’s next Thursday, and her teammates would rather she continue her dominance than save the record for a home game.

“Please don’t only score 14 next game just to get it here,” Gonzaga freshman guard Allie Turner said with a laugh.

When asked if she would rather break the record at home, Ejim said she doesn’t care where it happens — just that it does.

“I’ve thought about that [breaking it at home vs. on the road] in the back of my head. I’d like it to be at home, but again, we just got to play basketball and I don’t get a say in it. It would be cool to do it in the Kennel, but I just want to do it for Gonzaga, so I do care. But I don’t really care, I can’t really care,” she said with a smile.

The Bulldogs will hit the road to face Saint Mary’s on Thursday before returning home to host Washington State at 2 p.m. You can watch Gonzaga vs. Washington State live on SWX and stream it on SWXLocalSports.com.

  • Harry Kane and Eric Dier make Bundesliga history with all-time first in Bayern Munich win

Harry Kane and Eric Dier combined for a goal in the Bundesliga to become the first Englishmen to do so in the league’s history.

Kane opened the scoring for Bayern Munich in the 15th minute of their clash against SC Freiburg – a fixture that they won 2-1.

On the right-hand side of the pitch, Dier played a pass into the feet of the striker who turned his man and fired into the bottom corner of Noah Atubolu’s net.

It was Kane’s 17th league goal of the season, edging him closer to the Bundesliga’s Golden Boot award.

It was also a strike which ended a rather unique run in which Kane had failed to score from open play in two months.

His closest competitor for the trophy was Omar Marmoush, formerly of Eintracht Frankfurt, who recently completed a £59m move to Manchester City.

Kim Min-jae followed suit next with a goal in the 54th minute to double the lead.

Freiburg did score soon after but it was simply a consolation goal.

Speaking on his Cleats Club messaging app afterwards, Kane said: “Big away win today guys, really tough place to go.

“I think they had one of the best home records in the Bundesliga this year, so knew it was going to be a big fight and tough battle.

“So year, top mentality from the boys to go there and get the three points, and put ourselves a couple more points ahead was really important today so massive credit to everyone for the way we’ve worked and the way we’ve bounced back from midweek is really important.

“We use this now, two home games coming up, and another big week – so yeah, let’s keep the three points coming.”

Dier joined Spurs in 2014 where he played with Kane for nine years

Before the match, Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl was asked directly about Kane’s lack of goals from open play.

He said: “Harry is the least of my worries. When you have a young player, you might worry more, but Harry Kane has had so many highs and also some lows.

“So if anyone can cope and deal with it, it’s Harry Kane,” he added.

“He hasn’t scored from open play for a long time, but he also was injured. Of course, we need his goals.

“He knows that and is probably the one who is most critical of himself. But I don’t think it’s causing a mental problem for Harry.”

Kane since coming to Germany has not been a stranger to criticism despite an impressive 66 goals in 69 appearances.

Kane relished Bayern's response to their midweek defeat in Europe

Dier has also been slammed for his performances for Bayern but has been a key piece for the club, especially when the likes of Dayot Upamecano and Kim are unavailable.

“Eric is a player with a lot of experience who knows what to do in these moments,” said Vincent Kompany earlier this month. “Players like Eric have character and always prioritise the team.”

Kane and Dier, who played together at Tottenham, are yet to attain silverware for Bayern as Bayer Leverkusen infamously won their first-ever title last season.

But with Xavi Alonso’s side drawing with RB Leipzig, Bayern are now six points clear on top of the table.

In a historic moment for English footballers in the Bundesliga, Harry Kane and Eric Dier have made history with an all-time first in Bayern Munich’s recent win.

In their match against Bayern Munich, Kane and Dier became the first English players to score in a Bundesliga game together. Kane netted a goal in the first half, while Dier scored a crucial goal in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory for their team.

This milestone achievement not only showcases the talent and skill of these two players but also highlights the increasing presence of English players in top European leagues.

Fans and pundits alike are buzzing about this feat, with many praising Kane and Dier for their impressive performances on the pitch. It’s a proud moment for English football and a sign of things to come for these two talented players.

Congratulations to Harry Kane and Eric Dier for making history in the Bundesliga and for putting English football on the map in Germany. Here’s to many more memorable moments to come! #Bundesliga #HarryKane #EricDier #BayernMunich #EnglishFootball

  • 1st Time Since 1952, Pakistan Spinner Noman Ali Breaks All-Time Record With Hat-trick. Video

Noman Ali claimed hat-trick in Multan Test© X (Twitter)

Pakistan spinner Noman Ali registered his name in history books as he became the first spin bowler from the nation to secure a hat-trick for the national team in men’s Test history. Noman did so on Day 1 of the second Test against West Indies in Multan, bagging the wickets of Justin Greaves, Tevin Imlach and Kevin Sinclair on three consecutive deliveries. Pakistan, who first played a Test match in 1952, had never seen any spinner from the country, despite possessing some big names, take wickets on three successive deliveries before.

Noman put West Indies on the backfoot as the tourists lost 7 wickets for just 38 runs after opting to bat first. It was only the 12th over of the inning in which Noman went on to script history.

Pakistan opted for a spin-heavy bowling attack in the Multan Test, but also gave debut to right-arm pacer Kashif Ali who came in the place of Khurram Shahzad.

Kashif donned the whites for Pakistan after showcasing impressive form in the domestic circuit. The 24-year-old earned his call-up with consistent performances in first-class cricket, including a standout five-wicket haul for Pakistan Shaheens against Sri Lanka last November. His inclusion marks a significant milestone in his career as he becomes the sole pacer in Pakistan’s spin-heavy bowling attack for the match. Kashif expressed his excitement ahead of his debut.

Sajid Khan, Noman Ali, and Abrar Ahmed, all of whom played pivotal roles in dismantling the West Indies lineup in the first Test, once again led the charge with their guile and precision.

From the first 8 wickets that fell on Day 1, Kashif had bagged one, Noman claimed 4, Sajid Khan grabbed 2 and Abrar Ahmed clinched one wicket for Pakistan.

  • Alex Ovechkin goals tracker: The Great Eight 20 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of 894

A once seemingly unbreakable NHL record could fall as early as the 2024-25 season thanks to the goal-scoring prowess of Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin.

The Great Eight is within striking distance of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record of 894, which Gretzky reached on March 29, 1999, against the New York Islanders. Ovechkin began this season with 853 career goals.

Ovechkin scored in the Capitals’ 3-0 win over the Seattle Kraken Thursday night, moving within 20 goals of passing Gretzky with No. 875 in his career. The goal was his 22nd this season.

“It’s just a matter of time, whether it’s late this year, early next year, whenever,” Gretzky told NHL.com earlier this season about Ovechkin’s chances of breaking his record. “I mean, he’s a great player. He’s a great goal scorer.”

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in December that he will follow Ovechkin around when he’s within four or five goals of the record with Gretzky accompanying him.

Ovechkin started this season red-hot, with 15 goals in his first 18 games. Unfortunately, a fractured fibula suffered on Nov. 18 caused him to miss 16 games for the Capitals. The “Russian Machine” has been durable for his entire NHL career, having missed only 75 games due to injury since breaking in during the 2005-06 season.

Ovechkin and the Capitals will visit the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

We will track Ovechkin’s race to 894 goals and beyond all season.

Trying to figure out who owns the most national championships in college football is not for the weak of heart. The sport has changed considerably since the sport’s inaugural season — 1869 — when Princeton and Rutgers played twice and, conveniently, split those two games.

For decades after that, even as the sport expanded, the definition of “champion” remained uncertain. Many seasons featured a handful of winners, thanks in large part to no definitive ranking. In all, 42 different national polls have been used to select champions throughout the sport’s history, per the NCAA record book. If you look at the 1936 season, when the Associated Press — which would become the preeminent ranking system — arrived on the scene, four different teams were named champion. One outlet dubbed Duke the champion, three named LSU, eight crowned Minnesota and three chose Pittsburgh. Many of those selections were retroactive, too.

The most straightforward way to answer “Who has the most national championships?” is to go by the NCAA-recognized titles at the highest level of collegiate football, and that’s the criteria used below — for the most part. The figures are updated through Ohio State’s 34-23 win over Notre Dame on Monday night.

    10. Minnesota, 6

    Championships: 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941, 1960

It’s been a while, but the Golden Gophers were a powerhouse in the 1930s and 1940s, with 1941 Heisman Trophy winner Bruce Smith among the stars. Minnesota reached the mountaintop again in 1960, splitting the title with Ole Miss despite losing to Washington in the Rose Bowl.

    9. Oklahoma, 7

    Championships: 1950, 1955, 1956, 1974, 1975, 1985, 2000

Oklahoma’s seven titles came across four different decades, with the program’s first three national championships (all outright) coming under Bud Wilkinson in the 1950s. Then came consecutive titles in 1974 and 1975 under Barry Switzer and another title under Switzer in 1985. Bob Stoops led Oklahoma to its most recent title, in 2000, with a perfect 13-0 record in just his second season in Norman.

    8. Harvard, 8

    Championships: 1875, 1890, 1898, 1899, 1910, 1912, 1913, 1919

Harvard no longer plays at the highest level of college football (FBS). In fact, the Ivy League doesn’t even participate in the FCS playoffs, though that changes next season, but the Crimson used to dominate in the earliest days of the sport. Again, things have changed a lot. Percy Haughton led the Crimson to consecutive 9-0 seasons in 1912 and 1913.

    T-6. Ohio State, 9

    Championships: 1942, 1954, 1957, 1961, 1968, 1970, 2002, 2014, 2024

The Buckeyes have produced many of the game’s all-time greats, and now, they have tied the sixth-most NCAA-recognized national titles, too. Interestingly, Ohio State won both the first four-team College Football Playoff and the first 12-team College Football Playoff. Woody Hayes led the program to five of its nine championships.

    T-6. USC, 9

    Championships: 1931, 1932, 1962, 1967, 1972, 1974, 1978, 2003, 2004

Like Ohio State, USC has produced some of the game’s greatest talents and has nine titles to show for it. The Trojans earned their first two titles in the early 1930s and then went three decades before returning to titletown in the 1960s (twice) and 1970s (three times). After another long wait, Pete Carroll led the Trojans to consecutive titles in 2003 and 2004.

    5. Michigan, 10

    Championships: 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1918, 1923, 1933, 1948, 1997, 2024

Michigan is college football’s all-time winningest program, and its long run of dominance reflects that. The Wolverines went back-to-back-to-back-to-back around the turn of the 20th century and racked up four more titles by 1948. Then it took a while — until 1997, to be exact, behind Lloyd Carr and Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson. Jim Harbaugh’s bunch won it all in 2024 to give Michigan double-digit championships.

    4. Notre Dame, 11

    Championships: 1924, 1929, 1930, 1943, 1946, 1947, 1949, 1966, 1973, 1977, 1988

While the Fighting Irish couldn’t add to their total Monday night against the Buckeyes, they can still claim more championships overall. Knute Rockne led the Irish to their first three titles before Frank Leahy led them to four more in the 1940s. The current drought, though, spans 36 years, the longest in program history. The NCAA recognizes Notre Dame as a 13-time champion, but the Fighting Irish claim just 11 of those championships as the consensus winner, and that is the number CBS Sports research goes with, too.

    3. Princeton, 15

    Championships: 1869, 1870, 1872, 1873, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1885, 1889, 1893, 1896, 1903, 1906, 1911, 1922

Princeton claims 28 titles, but the NCAA recognizes 15, all of which came in the first 54 seasons of the sport existing. The Tigers even won four of the first five national championships, which makes sense given there were only a handful of teams in those days.

    2. Alabama, 16

    Championships: 1925, 1926, 1930, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2020

Alabama is known for two dynasties — Nick Saban’s six national championships in the 2000s and Bear Bryant’s six from 1961 to 1979 — but the Crimson Tide also won three titles in the early days of the sport under Wallace Wade.

    1. Yale, 18

    Championships: 1874, 1876, 1877, 1880, 1881, 1882, 1883, 1884, 1886, 1887, 1888, 1891, 1892, 1894, 1900, 1907, 1909, 1927

Sleep on the Ivy League at your own risk. Yale, much like Princeton and Harvard, goes way, way back to the sport’s early years, and the Bulldogs were absolutely dominant then. They won three titles in the 1870s and an incredible eight in the 1880s. Yale celebrates the 100th anniversary of its most recent champion in a few years, but for now, it remains on top.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have secured their ninth national championship in college football history, solidifying their status as one of the most successful programs in the sport. With this latest victory, many fans and analysts are wondering where the Buckeyes’ nine titles rank on the all-time college football list.

Historically, Ohio State’s nine national championships put them in elite company, tying them with Notre Dame for the second most titles in college football history. The only program with more national championships is Alabama, who currently has 18 titles to their name.

Ohio State’s national championships have come in various eras, with their first title coming in 1942 and their most recent in 2014. The Buckeyes have had legendary coaches such as Woody Hayes and Urban Meyer lead them to national championship success, further cementing their place as one of the premier programs in college football.

While Ohio State’s nine national championships are certainly impressive, the debate over where they rank on the all-time list will continue to rage on. Some may argue that the Buckeyes’ success is on par with programs like Notre Dame and USC, while others may believe that Alabama’s dominance in recent years sets them apart as the greatest program in college football history.

Regardless of where Ohio State’s nine titles rank on the all-time list, one thing is for certain: the Buckeyes’ consistent success on the gridiron has solidified their place among college football’s elite programs. Congratulations to Ohio State on their latest national championship victory! #GoBucks #NationalChampions

  • Oilers Make Gesture, Let Ovechkin Try On Gretzky’s Game-Used Gear As Capitals Captain Chases All-Time Goals Record

As Alex Ovechkin chases down Wayne Gretzky’s all-time NHL goals record, the Edmonton Oilers made quite a gesture toward the Washington Capitals captain.

Ovechkin and the Capitals are visiting Edmonton for the first game of a lengthy Canadian road swing, and with No. 8 in town, the Oilers opened the glass cases at the Oilers Hall of Fame in Rogers Place, which features Gretzky’s game-used gear from his time with Edmonton. There, they let Ovechkin try on Gretzky’s gloves and hold his stick and jersey.

Ovechkin has long respected Gretzky as he continues his quest toward the record once thought to be impossible, and the 39-year-old also has a game-used stick from Gretzky in his evergrowing collection. He was gifted Gretzky’s stick in 2018 after meeting “The Great One’s” condition of winning a Stanley Cup first.

Gretzky played with Edmonton from 1979 to 1988, winning four Stanley Cups and scoring 583 of his 894 career goals. He was then traded to the Los Angeles Kings and also had stints with the St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers before hanging up the skates in 1999.

Stay updated with the most interesting Washington Capitals stories, analysis, breaking news and more! Tap the star to add us to your favorites on Google News to never miss a story.

Ovechkin currently sits 21 goals away from breaking Gretzky’s all-time goals record. He is on pace to break that record in April, and if he keeps up that current scoring pace, he’ll also hit 900 career NHL goals, becoming the only NHL player in history to reach that mark.

Through 30 games this season, Ovechkin has 21 goals. He became the second player in NHL history to record 20 consecutive 20-goal seasons, and he also recently broke the record for the most goaltenders scored on all time.

In a touching display of sportsmanship and respect for hockey history, the Edmonton Oilers recently allowed Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin to try on Wayne Gretzky’s game-used gear as he chases the all-time goals record.

Ovechkin, who is currently in pursuit of Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals, was given the opportunity to don the Great One’s equipment during a recent visit to Edmonton. The gesture was a nod to Gretzky’s legendary career and the impact he had on the sport of hockey.

The Capitals star, known for his scoring prowess and powerful shot, looked right at home in the iconic gear as he took to the ice for a practice session. The moment was a reminder of the history and tradition of the game, as well as the camaraderie and mutual respect among players.

As Ovechkin continues his quest to etch his name in the record books, moments like these serve as a reminder of the connection between past and present in the world of hockey. The Oilers’ gesture was a class act, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship and admiration for those who came before.

Whether Ovechkin ultimately surpasses Gretzky’s record or not, the moment of trying on the Great One’s gear will surely be a cherished memory for the Capitals captain and a symbol of the bond shared by players across generations.

  • XRP’s Massive Week: Nearly All-Time High Price, ETF Optimism, and SEC vs. Ripple

The excitement surrounding Ripple and XRP has been growing since Donald Trump became President-elect in November, signaling a potentially favorable administration for crypto assets.

That excitement crescendoed last week as XRP came within pennies of breaking its all-time high price record from 2018, pushing Ripple’s stash of the asset to a staggering sum amid other notable happenings around the crypto company.

Here’s what you need to know from a wild week for Ripple and XRP.

    XRP nears all-time high

XRP traded around $0.50 in the days leading up to the U.S. elections in November. Since that time the token has grown by more than 500% to a current price of $3.15, all while becoming the third-largest cryptocurrency by market cap, overtaking stablecoin Tether in the process.

Thanks to the surge, the token nearly set a new all-time high, peaking at $3.38 on January 16, just $0.02 shy of its all-time high of $3.40 set in 2018 per data from CoinGecko.

Up more than 25% on the week as of this writing, XRP has greatly outperformed its major crypto peers like Bitcoin and Ethereum—though Solana is now showing much larger weekly gains thanks to momentum around Trump’s official meme coin launch.

    ETF optimism grows

Some of the demand for XRP can be attributed to the growing optimism about an approval of an XRP ETF. Last week, a report from researchers at JP Morgan indicated that if approved, an XRP ETF could expect to pull in billions of dollars from investors.

This report piggybacks on recent comments from Ripple Labs president Monica Long, who suggested that she thinks an XRP ETF will be approved “very soon.”

    Ripple’s holdings skyrocket

The major price appreciation in XRP has bolstered Ripple’s holdings tremendously, increasing by about $115 billion since election day at the current price

Based on its most recent financial disclosures, the firm holds around 4.44 billion XRP, and controls another 39 billion XRP in escrow—a collective amount now worth $136 billion at the token’s current price. At the time of the election, this amount was worth approximately $21 billion.

During the election, Ripple and other notable crypto firms like Coinbase helped spearhead a $300 million super PAC in an attempt to improve the regulatory environment for crypto in the United States. So far, that bet appears to be paying off handsomely.

    Meme coins surge

After a brief spike in early December, meme coin activity on the XRP Ledger had largely gone silent until activity soared once more last week.

The activity was led by ARMY, a meme coin based on the enthusiastic supporters of the Ripple-linked asset, which jumped to a new all-time high around a $107 million market cap. Though the token has since pulled back to around a $67 million market cap, it still leads other XRP meme coins in trading volume, which has grown when compared to the December rush.

Thanks in part to the meme coin trading activity, the XRP Ledger saw its highest mark of active accounts since December 6, breaching 63,000 on January 16 according to data from XRP Scan.

    SEC not giving up

Though a more friendly regulatory environment might be around the corner, the current SEC administration is not yielding in its lengthy battle with Ripple.

This week, Ripple Chief Legal Officer Stuart Alderoty noted that despite asking for the SEC to postpone its opening brief in an appeal against a ruling that favored Ripple, the enforcement agency refused. On Wednesday, the SEC filed the brief, asking the court for a reclassification of the security status of XRP.

“What a waste of time and taxpayer dollars,” he wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

Despite the frustration, Adelroty remains confident in Ripple’s position, indicating he looks forward to working with the new SEC leadership to resolve the matter.

XRP’s Massive Week: Nearly All-Time High Price, ETF Optimism, and SEC vs. Ripple

This past week has been a rollercoaster ride for XRP, the cryptocurrency associated with Ripple. The price of XRP surged to nearly its all-time high, reaching over $1.80 at one point, before retracing slightly. This surge was fueled by a combination of factors, including positive sentiment in the overall cryptocurrency market and excitement over potential developments for XRP.

One major catalyst for XRP’s price increase was the growing optimism surrounding the possibility of an XRP exchange-traded fund (ETF). Earlier this week, multiple reports indicated that the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) may be open to approving an XRP ETF, following the recent approval of a Bitcoin futures ETF. This news sent XRP investors into a buying frenzy, driving up the price of the cryptocurrency.

However, this optimism was tempered by the ongoing legal battle between Ripple and the SEC. The SEC has accused Ripple of conducting an unregistered securities offering through its sale of XRP, and the case has been ongoing for months. While the recent developments in the case have been largely positive for Ripple, with several key victories in court, the outcome is still uncertain and continues to weigh on XRP’s price.

Overall, it’s been a tumultuous but ultimately positive week for XRP, with the cryptocurrency reaching new heights in terms of price and potential regulatory approval. As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, XRP remains a key player to watch.
