  • With spring approaching, what does the Farmers’ Almanac predict for Columbus?

Spring is almost here, bringing thoughts of sunny days, warm breezes and blooming flowers (and no snow). It also brings thoughts of unceasing rain, soggy ground and chilly temperatures.

Is Ohio in for a pleasant, spring or summer? Or is a dour, rainy spring more likely?

The Farmers’ Almanac—which has been predicting the weather since 1818—has the answer to those questions. Here is what it predicts for spring.

Farmers’ Almanac spring prediction for Columbus

Ohio and the Midwest region will have a “cool, showery” spring, according to the almanac.

It will not start right away. Winter weather will linger past the vernal equinox on March 20.

Once spring does set in, plenty of showers and thunderstorms are expected. Ohio is also expected to have below-normal temperatures even through June, according to the almanac.

What does the National Weather Service predict for spring?

The National Weather Service’s three-month outlook predicts Ohio will likely experience above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation February through April.

What will the weather be like for Easter?

The Farmers’ Almanac predicts a fair, unsettled Easter for Ohio. Unsettled weather occurs when atmospheric conditions are conducive to precipitation, according to NOAA.

    What is La Nina?

La Niña is a recurring climate pattern that occurs when trade winds that push warm water west from South America toward Asia are stronger than usual. Colder water rises to the surface to replenish the warm water pushed off to Asia, which in turn affects weather patterns in the U.S., The Dispatch previously reported.

A cooler Pacific Ocean causes the Pacific jet stream, a fast-moving current of air that circles the globe, to move north, leading to colder and wetter conditions in northern states like Ohio and warmer and drier conditions in the southern U.S., according to the National Weather Service.

The U.S. is currently experiencing La Niña, and there is a 59% chance of it persisting February through April, according to NOAA.
