  • Estée Lauder welcomes back anti-ageism activist Paulina Porizkova as global ambassador

Estée Lauder has announced the return of model and anti-ageism activist Paulina Porizkova to its global ambassador roster.

The 59-year-old actor previously served as a spokesmodel for the luxury beauty brand from 1988 to 1995, appearing in some of its “most celebrated” campaigns.

This new partnership highlights both parties “shared mission to redefine standards of beauty,” read a statement from Estée Lauder.

Porizkova will endorse skin care and make-up products from the brand that “authentically align” with her pro-ageing values.

She will also drive conversations and foster communities around the topic.

Her first campaign will debut in spring in support of Estée Lauder’s Revitalizing Supreme+ franchise.

“Today marks a milestone moment for the brand as we welcome Paulina back to the Estée Lauder family; this time not as a spokesmodel, but as a role model,” said Justin Boxford, Global Brand President, Estée Lauder.

“Paulina’s voice, authenticity and ability to connect with women on the deepest level is the embodiment of everything Estée Lauder stands for.

“She is changing the conversation around ageing, and we want to be the megaphone to help amplify her message.”

Talking about the collaboration, Porizkova said: “Over the last 30 years, I have become a woman who has a voice, strong opinions and an even stronger sense of self.

“Estée Lauder approached me to work with them again, not despite these values but because of them.

“Unlike the first time around, this is more than a job.

“It is my purpose – an opportunity to be exactly who I am, to speak only about products I genuinely love and believe in, and to show women around the world that with age comes power and possibility.

“This is about more than representation. It is about being seen and celebrated.

Estée Lauder’s other A-lister ambassadors include Cuban-Spanish actress Ana de Armas and models Bianca Brandolini, Carolyn Murphy, Grace Elizabeth and Imaan Hammam.

Plus, South Korean singer-songwriter IU, American model Karlie Kloss, Hong Kong-Taiwanese actress and model Shu Qi, and Chinese actress Yang Mi.

  • Stefanik will face questions about wars and nukes at her confirmation hearing to be UN ambassador

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Elise Stefanik is likely to face questions at her confirmation hearing on Tuesday to become the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations about her lack of foreign policy experience, her strong support for Israel and her views on funding the U.N. and its many agencies.

Harvard-educated and the fourth-ranking member of the U.S. House, she was elected to Congress in 2015 as a moderate Republican and is leaving a decade later as one of President Donald Trump’s most ardent allies. She embraced Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol as he denied he lost the election to Democrat Joe Biden.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “looks forward to working again with President Trump on his second term,” U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said Monday.

When Trump announced Stefanik’s appointment, his former national security adviser John Bolton told The Associated Press that he sees her as the new version of Trump’s U.N. ambassador in his first administration — Nikki Haley. Haley went on to challenge him, unsuccessfully, for the GOP nomination last year.

Stefanik “wants to run for president in 2028,” said Bolton, who also served as U.S. ambassador to the U.N. in President George W. Bush’s administration. “She realizes she has no foreign policy experience, so what better way than to become U.N. ambassador. She stays two years, and then away we go.”

When she appears before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Stefanik is likely to be grilled about her views on the wars in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and elsewhere as well as the North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs — all issues on the U.N. agenda.

The United States pays about one-fifth of the U.N.’s regular budget, and she is expected to be questioned about her comments on cutting the U.N. budget and continuing support for its multiple agencies. They tackle everything from health, education and migration to reproductive rights and nuclear proliferation.

Stefanik saw her profile rise after her aggressive questioning last year of a trio of university presidents about antisemitism on their campuses, leading to two of their resignations — a performance Trump repeatedly praised.

She has been very vocal about supporting Israel, especially since the Hamas cross-border attacks on Oct. 7, 2023, in which militants killed about 1,200 people and took some 250 hostage. It led to the Israeli-Hamas war in Gaza, where a ceasefire that the U.S. helped broker has taken hold.

Stefanik has accused the U.N. of being a “den of antisemitism” for criticizing Israel’s air and ground attacks on Gaza, which have resulted in more than 46,000 Palestinian deaths, according to local health officials. They do not distinguish between civilians and militants but say women and children make up more than half the dead.

If confirmed, Stefanik said she plans to confront what she says is antisemitism at the world body.

Her limited foreign policy experience outside Capitol Hill is almost certain to come up among senators.

Stefanik most recently was the most senior and longest-serving woman on both the House Armed Services Committee and the coveted House committee that oversees national intelligence. Stefanik was also tapped to be on a select committee focused on strategic competition between the U.S. and China and spent years as part of a group of House members negotiating the annual defense authorization bill, which determines funding for the military. In 2023, she also led a bipartisan delegation of members to the Indo-Pacific including Japan, Singapore and Thailand to meet with various government, military and cultural leaders in the region.

Born and raised in upstate New York, Stefanik worked in Bush’s White House on the domestic policy council and in the chief of staff’s office.

She was the youngest person in her freshman class in Congress — just 30 — and ascended to the House leadership team in 2021, becoming the only woman.

Unlike Sen. Marco Rubio, who was confirmed in a unanimous vote Monday night, only one Democrat — Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania — has publicly said he would vote to confirm Stefanik thus far. But, many other Democrats have left meetings with her indicating their support, including Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada, who is Jewish and noted their discussions on how Stefanik “plans to push back on politically motivated actions” against Israel when at the U.N.

    ___

This story has been corrected to show that one Democrat has publicly endorsed Stefanik, not that no Democrats have publicly endorsed her.

    ___

Lederer reported from the United Nations.

As Rep. Elise Stefanik prepares for her confirmation hearing to become the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, she can expect to face tough questions about her stance on wars and nuclear weapons.

Stefanik, a Republican from New York, has been a vocal supporter of military intervention in conflicts around the world, including in Syria and Afghanistan. She has also expressed support for increasing defense spending and modernizing the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

Critics have raised concerns about Stefanik’s hawkish foreign policy views, questioning whether she will be able to effectively advocate for diplomacy and peaceful resolutions to conflicts at the United Nations. Some have also raised questions about her lack of experience in international diplomacy and foreign policy.

During her confirmation hearing, Stefanik will likely be asked to clarify her positions on these issues and explain how she plans to approach them as ambassador. She will also likely face questions about how she plans to address the growing threats posed by nuclear weapons and the need for disarmament.

It remains to be seen how Stefanik will respond to these questions and whether she will be able to convince skeptics that she is capable of representing the United States effectively at the United Nations. As the confirmation process unfolds, all eyes will be on Stefanik as she navigates these challenging questions and seeks to secure the support of the Senate.

  • Elise Stefanik to face senators at confirmation hearing for U.N. ambassador today

Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik will face senators’ questions on Tuesday as she defends her record and qualifications to become the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Stefanik, one of President Trump’s most reliable allies in Congress, goes before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations for her confirmation hearing less than 24 hours after Mr. Trump was sworn into office. Mr. Trump hopes his key Cabinet picks will sail through confirmation and take their posts once he’s president on Jan. 20. Stefanik is likely to be confirmed when the full Senate takes up a vote.

Stefanik, 40, would be the youngest-ever U.S. ambassador to the UN. The New York Republican has served in a leadership position as Republican conference chair, and she was on the House Armed Services Committee and House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. And that skillset honed in Congress will serve her well, said John Alterman, senior vice president and director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Alterman said Stefanik brings some of the most important qualities a UN ambassador can have — a close relationship with the president and an ability to communicate and execute his policies.

“The most important part of being a representative is having a relationship to the president, being able to speak for the president, and speak for the administration’s policies,” Alterman said. “I think she is very good at thinking about messaging, she understands the president’s instincts and he likes her.”

“And I think the political skill that you pick up being in Congress ends up being really helpful when you’re working in the UN,” Alterman continued. “I mean, a lot of it is about building coalitions, about neutralizing opposition, about finding compromises. All those kinds of things are skills that Congress and other kinds of political experience is great for.”

Trump’s pick to represent the U.S. at the UN is also one of the institution’s most vocal critics. Stefanik has blasted the UN as antisemitic, lambasting its approach to Israel in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack.

After the UN in September overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution demanding that Israel end its “its unlawful presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory” within 12 months, Stefanik said the UN’s “antisemitic rot is on full display as it punishes Israel for defending itself.” Stefanik has been highly critical of the Biden administration’s handling of the situation in the Middle East, and she was the first high-ranking House member to visit Israel after Hamas’ attack. She will no doubt play a role in the aftermath of the  ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel that took effect this weekend. .

Stefanik has championed Mr. Trump’s “America first” messaging and agenda, insisting the United States needs to focus its spending, energy and attention on issues directly affecting the U.S. While Stefanik has supported military assistance to Ukraine in the past and voted to sanction Russia before it expanded its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, she has opposed recent, additional aid. In April 2024, she was one of 112 Republicans to vote against a $61 billion aid package for Ukraine.

When Mr. Trump announced her as his pick for the UN, Stefanik said she is “ready to advance President Donald Jr. Trump’s restoration of America first peace through strength leadership on the world stage on day one.”

Alterman said he thinks people “underestimate her communication skills.”

“I think she’s very smart and savvy,” Alterman said. “And having an ambassador to the UN who can understand the impact of her words and actions advances the administration’s agenda.”

    Who is Elise Stefanik?

Elected to represent New York’s 21st Congressional District in 2014, Stefanik was the youngest Republican woman to join Congress at the age of 30. She has easily won reelection in her upstate New York district ever since. As GOP conference chair, Stefanik has been the highest-ranking woman in the House.

Born and raised in upstate New York, Stefanik was the first in her immediate family to earn a college degree, according to her office. She graduated from Harvard University, where she studied government.

In her 20s, she worked in the White House on President George W. Bush’s Domestic Policy Council.

Stefanik and her husband have one son.

  • Mel Gibson ‘surprised’ Trump named him Hollywood ambassador

Donald Trump surprised the world Thursday with his announcement of three “Special Ambassadors” to Hollywood — including at least one of the ambassadors.

Mel Gibson, who was among the trio of actors named a “Special Ambassador” and “Special Envoy” to Hollywood in a Truth Social post from the president-elect, tells Entertainment Weekly that he didn’t know about the position until Trump publicly announced it. “I got the tweet at the same time as all of you and was just as surprised,” the Apocalypto filmmaker says.

However, Gibson is prepared to perform his duties — whatever they may be. “Nevertheless, I heed the call,” he says. “My duty as a citizen is to give any help and insight I can. Any chance the position comes with an Ambassador’s residence?” (Gibson’s concluding quip would seem to be a reference to him recently losing his Malibu home to the Palisades fire.)

Gibson was one of three conservative-leaning actors named in Trump’s announcement, along with Sylvester Stallone and Jon Voight. “It is my honor to announce Jon Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone, to be Special Ambassadors to a great but very troubled place, Hollywood, California,” Trump wrote.

It wasn’t immediately clear what duties these ambassadors will perform, but Trump set some broad goals: “They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK — BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!”

    Mel Gibson.

    Chelsea Lauren/Shutterstock

Trump added, “These three very talented people will be my eyes and ears, and I will get done what they suggest. It will again be, like The United States of America itself, The Golden Age of Hollywood!”

Gibson previously aligned himself with Trump when he criticized Vice President Kamala Harris in October, claiming she had “the IQ of a fence post.” Although he never officially confirmed who he voted for in the 2024 election, the actor did say it would be “a pretty good guess” to assume he cast a ballot for Trump.

The Lethal Weapon star has also been spotted in public with the president-elect on more than one occasion. Gibson saluted the former president at a UFC event in 2021, and was also spotted speaking with Trump at a different UFC event in 2023.

Gibson has experienced one of the most tumultuous careers of his generation in Hollywood. He was among the most bankable and beloved stars of the 1990s and successfully transitioned to directing, winning Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director for Braveheart at the 1996 Academy Awards.

Want more movie news? Sign up for Entertainment Weekly‘s free newsletter to get the latest trailers, celebrity interviews, film reviews, and more.

A decade later, he effectively became persona non grata in Hollywood in the wake a controversial DUI arrest in Malibu during which he allegedly made antisemitic remarks and disparaged a female police officer.

Gibson didn’t appear in a new film until 2010’s Edge of Darkness, after which he mounted a steady comeback with the The Beaver, Daddy’s Home 2, and The Expendables 3 (the latter of which costarred Stallone, who co-wrote the script as well). Gibson also received a Best Director nomination at the 2017 Oscars for his war drama Hacksaw Ridge.

Gibson’s next film, Flight Risk, arrives Jan. 24. The thriller stars Mark Wahlberg, Topher Grace, and Michelle Dockery. He has also said that next year, he plans to shoot The Resurrection of the Christ, a sequel to his 2004 hit The Passion of the Christ.

Mel Gibson ‘surprised’ Trump named him Hollywood ambassador

Mel Gibson recently expressed his surprise after former President Donald Trump announced that he had been named as the Hollywood ambassador for the Trump administration. The actor and director, known for his controversial past and conservative views, admitted that he was caught off guard by the news.

In a statement, Gibson said, “I was surprised and honored to be chosen as the Hollywood ambassador by President Trump. It’s a role that I take very seriously and I look forward to representing the entertainment industry in a positive light.”

Gibson’s appointment has sparked mixed reactions within the industry, with some praising his talent and others criticizing his past behavior and comments. Despite the controversy, Gibson remains optimistic about his new role and hopes to bridge the gap between Hollywood and the Trump administration.

It remains to be seen how Gibson will navigate his new position and what impact it will have on the relationship between Hollywood and the political sphere. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
