  • Amen Thompson caps career night with game winner vs. Celtics

BOSTON — Amen Thompson hit a game-winning floater with 0.7 seconds left and finished with 33 points to lead the Houston Rockets to a 114-112 victory over the Boston Celtics on Monday night.

Dillon Brooks shot 10-of-15 from 3-point range and led Houston with 36 points. The Rockets won for the ninth time in 11 games.

Jaylen Brown had 28 points for the Celtics, and Jayson Tatum added 19 after a scoreless first half. Luke Kornet had 18, and Kristaps Porzingis scored 17 to go with eight rebounds.

Rockets leading scorer Jalen Green was held to 12 points.

Alperen Sengun broke free off an inbounds play and went in for an easy dunk, pushing Houston in front 112-110. After a timeout, Tatum got the ball near midcourt and drove in for the tying layup with 5.3 seconds left. Thompson responded by taking the ball from just outside the 3-point line and driving to the rim to hit the winner over Brown.

“That was my first game-winner,” said Thompson, who set a career high with his 33 points. “I feel like Kobe.”

Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla blamed himself for the last two defensive breakdowns.

“Those last two plays were on me,” he said. “Those were my fault. Didn’t put us in the best matchups. I saw the play that they were trying to run, and I tried to change the matchups and put our guys in a tough spot.”

The Celtics easily won the first meeting between the teams in Houston on Jan. 3.

Houston coach Ime Udoka said before the game that forward Cam Whitmore was “sick and back at the hotel.” For the Celtics, center Al Horford was a very late scratch after going through warmups, while Derrick White (bruised right shin) and Sam Hauser (right hip) were both out.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In a thrilling matchup against the Boston Celtics, Amen Thompson put on a show for the ages. The young guard had a career night, finishing with a career-high 40 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds. But it was his clutch shot in the final seconds that stole the show.

With the game tied and the clock winding down, Thompson drove to the basket and hit a tough floater over two defenders to give his team the lead. The crowd erupted as the final buzzer sounded, securing a hard-fought victory for his team.

Thompson’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing his incredible scoring ability and composure under pressure. It was a moment that will be remembered for years to come, solidifying his place as a rising star in the league.

Congratulations to Amen Thompson on a memorable night and a game-winning shot that will go down in history. Amen! #GameWinner #CareerNight #RisingStar

  • Cavaliers lose 3rd straight as Rockets’ Amen Thompson gets triple-double in 135-131 win

For the first time during what’s been an amazing season, the Cleveland Cavaliers have lost three games in a row.

The third consecutive defeat came on Saturday night versus the Houston Rockets. Amen Thompson collected a triple-double with 23 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Rockets to a 135-131 victory at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse.

With three straight losses (and two in a row at home), the Cavs have dropped a half-game behind the Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA’s best record at 36-9. They also lead the Boston Celtics by 4 1/2 games for the top record in the Eastern Conference. Boston defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 122-107, on Saturday.

Interestingly, two of Cleveland’s losses during this streak have come to the Rockets, who have the league’s third-best record at 30-14. The Cavs lost to Houston on Wednesday, 109-108, when Darius Garland missed two free throws in the closing seconds that would have tied the game.

Garland tried to make up for that in Saturday’s rematch, scoring a game-high 39 points with nine assists. He shot 14 of 22 from the floor, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers. Donovan Mitchell nearly matched him with 33 points and seven assists.

Yet despite Cleveland’s backcourt combining for 72 points, the Cavaliers couldn’t match Houston getting 20 or more points from four different players. Alperen Şengün and Jalen Green each scored 26 points, while Fred VanVleet added 20. VanVleet connected on 6-of-9 3-pointers, as well.

Perhaps the difference was in the frontcourt with Şengün and Steven Adams combining for 40 points along with Thompson’s second career triple-double. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen countered with 15 for the Cavs, but Tristan Thompson contributed zero points off the bench. Mobley played after missing four games with a strained right calf.

Cleveland took an 18-17 lead in the first quarter, but Houston rallied to go on top 33-27 and didn’t relinquish the lead through the rest of the game. The Rockets led by 17 points by the end of the third, but the Cavaliers tied the score in the fourth at 124-124. However, Houston regained the lead on a Şengün free throw and held it for the rest of the game by going 8 for 10 at the free throw line.

The Cavs will try to end their losing streak on Monday, hosting the Detroit Pistons. The Rockets continue a four-game road trip by visiting the Celtics, also on Monday.

The Cleveland Cavaliers suffered their third consecutive loss on Tuesday night as the Houston Rockets came out on top with a 135-131 victory. The standout performance of the game came from Rockets’ guard Amen Thompson, who achieved a remarkable triple-double with 22 points, 12 assists, and 10 rebounds.

Despite a strong effort from the Cavaliers, including impressive performances from their key players, they were unable to overcome the Rockets’ offensive firepower. The loss puts the Cavaliers at a disadvantage as they continue to fight for a playoff spot in the tough Eastern Conference.

Fans are hopeful that the Cavaliers can bounce back from this defeat and regain their winning momentum in the upcoming games. Stay tuned for more updates on the Cavaliers’ journey throughout the season.

  • Amen Thompson Continues to Thrive as a Starter for the Rockets

The Houston Rockets were expected to hit a slight struggle after news broke that starting forward Jabari Smith Jr. would be out for multiple weeks with a broken hand. The 21-year-old was averaging 11.9 points and 6.5 rebounds on 43.5% shooting from the field prior to the injury.

However, the Rockets have been just fine, if not better since forward Amen Thompson stepped in to fill that starting spot. In his sophomore season, the 21-year-old is averaging 12.9 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists. 1.4 steals, and 1.1 blocks across 40 games.

As a starter, Thompson has been efficient and consistent, boosting his averages across the board. This season, he’s averaging 16.8 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.8 blocks in 13 games as a starter. In those 13 games, Houston has gone 10-3.

The Rockets were expected to have one of the deepest rotations in the NBA this season, however the bench has been cut short when it comes to production. Thompson and fellow forward Tari Eason have been the only consistent pieces off the bench. Cam Whitmore is starting to step up as of late, however he hasn’t been there the whole season. The sophomore was briefly sent to the G League amid early struggles.

Thompson has been the definition of a Swiss Army knife for Houston, showcasing elite abilities on both sides of the floor. He can score when needed but can also rebound, facilitate, and defend.

There’s a legitimate argument for Thompson to remain as the starter when Smith returns. The Rockets have found the same success with Thompson in the starting lineup, and he’s been producing at a higher level. Based on his seamless fit in the first five, head coach Ime Udoka will have a tough decision to make soon.

Make no mistake, Houston needs Smith nearly as much as it needs Thompson. He’s been a crucial piece in the Rockets’ success and should continue to be once he returns. However, Thompson’s impact and production cannot be ignored. He’s stepped up for Houston and should be the starting forward next to Dillon Brooks, even when Smith comes back.

Amen Thompson Continues to Thrive as a Starter for the Rockets

Houston Rockets fans have been buzzing about the stellar play of Amen Thompson, who has seamlessly stepped into the starting lineup and made a huge impact for the team. Thompson, who was initially seen as a role player off the bench, has exceeded expectations and solidified his spot as a key contributor for the Rockets.

In his recent games as a starter, Thompson has showcased his versatility and skillset on both ends of the court. His ability to score in a variety of ways, whether it’s driving to the basket, knocking down three-pointers, or creating plays for his teammates, has been a huge asset for the Rockets.

Thompson’s defensive prowess has also been on full display, as he has consistently locked down his assignments and made timely stops to help his team secure victories. His hustle and tenacity on the court have earned him the respect of his teammates and coaches, who have praised his work ethic and dedication to improving his game.

As the Rockets continue to push for a playoff spot, Thompson’s emergence as a reliable starter has been a key factor in their success. Fans can’t wait to see what he’ll do next as he continues to thrive in his new role with the team. Amen Thompson is definitely a player to watch out for in the NBA.

  • Amen Thompson logs second career triple-double as Rockets defeat Cleveland

The Detroit Pistons’ 107-96 victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday was Ausar’s first NBA win against Amen. And although the brothers did not spend many possessions matched up against one another, with Ausar defending Rockets star Jalen Green and Amen guarding Pistons star Cade Cunningham, after the final buzzer they were drawn together like magnets. They shared an embrace on the court, but Amen Thompson was content for it to be brief, knowing the taunting that awaited. “I’m not even gonna open my phone, bro,” the Rockets guard said. “I can’t even do it. I got his messages on silent.” “I’m just gonna brag,” Ausar confirmed. “Talk to him about it all day.” -via Houston Chronicle / January 21, 2025

Houston Rockets guard Amen Thompson had a stellar performance on Wednesday night, logging his second career triple-double as the Rockets defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers.

  • Amen Thompson lifting off for Rockets

Amen Thompson was drafted fourth in the 2023 NBA Draft and has proved to be a significant part of Houston’s rebuild.

The Rockets selected Amen Thompson No. 4 overall in the 2023 NBA Draft and expected him to be a key piece of their rebuild. The timeline for the Rockets’ rebuild has accelerated greatly and so has Thompson’s development into the player they envisioned back in June 2023. The second-year wing has carved out a significant role for a Rockets team that finds itself second in the Western Conference standings as of Jan. 15 – a massive jump from the 19-20 record and 11th-place seeding a year ago on this date.

Thompson had an encouraging rookie season as he averaged 9.5 points on 53.6 percent shooting to go with 6.6 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game over 22.4 minutes. This year, his production has increased (12.6 PPG, 7.7 RPG, 1.2 STL), but still undersells the impact that Thompson is making, especially of late.

Thompson started just two of the Rockets’ first 24 games and was effective overall in that span with 11.9 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. However, Thompson has started seven of Houston’s last eight games and turned in some loud performances over that stretch. He has five double-doubles in that stretch, averaging 15.6 PPG, 11.0 RPG and he’s shooting 56.8 percent from the floor.

What Thompson is doing this season stands out among his fellow 2023 Draft classmates. Thompson checks in with 3.8 win shares, leading all second-year players, including even Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs’ star ranks third in that metric and is having a standout campaign of his own, so this goes to show the impact Thompson is having. Thompson ranks fourth in Player Impact Estimate among second-year players as well.

The Rockets have won four straight since Thompson’s return from a two-game absence on Jan.5, including back-to-back wins over the Grizzlies to further entrench them in the No.2 spot in the West.  He is getting it done on both ends of the floor and his explosive athleticism makes the Rockets even tougher to deal with – especially when teams already have to account for that element of Jalen Green’s game.

The Rockets are exceeding expectations this season and Thompson is following that theme by having an ascendant sophomore campaign.

Amen Thompson, the star player for the Rockets, is ready to take flight as he gears up for another season with the team. With his incredible athleticism and determination, Thompson is sure to soar to new heights on the court.

Fans are buzzing with excitement as they eagerly anticipate seeing Thompson in action once again. Known for his electrifying dunks and clutch plays, Thompson never fails to impress on the court.

As he prepares to lift off for the Rockets, Thompson is focused and ready to lead his team to victory. With his skill and leadership, there’s no doubt that the Rockets will be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Get ready to witness greatness as Amen Thompson takes to the skies and leaves his mark on the court for the Rockets. It’s time to buckle up and enjoy the ride as Thompson and the Rockets aim for the stars. #Rockets #AmenThompson #LiftOff.

  • Amen Thompson, Terry Rozier suspended, three others fined in wake of Rockets/Heat fight

Amen Thompson, Terry Rozier suspended, three others fined in wake of Rockets/Heat fight

    Miami Heat v Houston Rockets

    Miami Heat v Houston Rockets

Houston’s Amen Thompson and Miami’s Terry Rozier have been suspended, while two other players, as well as coach Ime Udoka, have been fined in the wake of the fight near the end of Miami’s win over Houston earlier this week, the league announced Tuesday.

Thompson has been suspended two games without pay — he instigated the incident by throwing the Heat’s Tyler Herro to the ground — and Miami’s Terry Rozier one game for escalating the event by jumping in and going after Thompson on the ground.

Rockets guard Jalen Green has been fined $35,000 and Miami’s Herro $25,000 for their roles in the fracas. However, the largest fine went to Houston coach Ime Udoka, $50,000, for “verbal abuse of a game official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his technical foul and ejection.”

All that was over this incident in the final minute of the Heat’s win on the Rockets’ home court this week.

After the game, Herro said, “Guess that’s what happens when someone’s scoring, throwing dimes, doing the whole thing. I’d get mad, too.” Udoka commented, “They were in each other’s faces, bumping chests a little bit. One guy is stronger than the other.” NBA Twitter tended to side with Udoka on that one, but Herro got the win and will take it.

The NBA has handed down suspensions and fines following the altercation between the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat on Thursday night. Rockets’ forward Amen Thompson and Heat’s guard Terry Rozier have been suspended for one game each for their role in the scuffle.

In addition to Thompson and Rozier, three other players have been fined for their involvement in the incident. The league has not disclosed the amount of the fines, but it is believed to be in the range of $25,000 to $50,000.

The altercation occurred late in the fourth quarter of the game, with tensions running high between the two teams. Thompson and Rozier were both ejected from the game after exchanging heated words and shoving each other.

The suspensions and fines serve as a reminder that the NBA takes player conduct seriously and will not tolerate any form of violence or unsportsmanlike behavior on the court. Both Thompson and Rozier will sit out their team’s next game as a result of their actions, while the other three players involved will have to pay a financial penalty.

It is important for players to remember to keep their emotions in check and to always conduct themselves in a professional manner, both on and off the court. Hopefully, this incident will serve as a learning experience for all involved and lead to more respectful interactions between players in the future.

Amen Thompson, Terry Rozier suspended, several fined after Heat-Rockets fight Sunday

Amen Thompson has been suspended two games while Terry Rozier has been suspended one for their roles in Sunday’s fight between the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat, the NBA announced Tuesday. Additionally, Jalen Green was fined $35,000, while Tyler Herro was fined $25,000 for their parts in the scuffle. Rockets coach Ime Udoka was also fined $50,000 for verbal abuse of a game official and failing to leave the court in a timely manner following his ejection.

Things started with 47.1 seconds remaining and Fred VanVleet attempting to inbound the ball for the Rockets. VanVleet tried to call a timeout, but was called for a five-second violation by referee Marc Davis instead. VanVleet argued with Davis, but seemed to accidentally bump into him and was quickly ejected.

“After the correctly assessed five-second violation, Fred VanVleet asked me why he was not granted a timeout,” Davis explained in the postgame pool report. “I communicated to him that the five-second count was reached prior to him requesting the timeout. He walks away. Coach Udoka then asks for an explanation. I give it to him and then Fred VanVleet re-engages and intentionally contacts me and is ejected as per rule.”

Mere seconds later, the Heat were attempting to inbound the ball when Amen Thompson and Tyler Herro grappled with one another. Thompson pulled Herro to the ground, and both teams rushed to the aid of their own players.

When the dust settled, six more people were ejected. Four of them were players: Thompson and Green on the Houston side and Herro and Rozier from the Heat. Two more were coaches, Rockets head coach Udoka and Houston assistant Ben Sullivan.

“During the dead ball, Thompson grabs the jersey and body slams Herro,” Davis said after the game in the pool report. “Herro responds and they are both ejected for fighting fouls. Green is ejected as his actions escalated the altercation.  Rozier as well is ejected as his actions were escalators to the altercation. Coach Sullivan is assessed a technical foul and ejected for his unsportsmanlike comments directed at me as I was attempting to redirect [Alperen] Sengun.”

Afterward, Herro suggested that his strong performance helped lead to the incident.

“Guess that’s what happens when someone’s scoring, throwing dimes, doing the whole thing,” said Herro, who finished with 27 points, nine assists and six rebounds on 10-for-17 shooting. “So I’d get mad, too.”

Udoka took the opportunity to express the physical superiority he believes Thompson holds over Herro.

“They were in each other’s faces, bumping chests a little bit,” Udoka said. “One guy is stronger than the other.”

The Heat went on to close out the victory from there, but further discipline is almost certainly coming for both sides in the coming days. On Friday, a fight between the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks yielded suspensions for three players: Naji Marshall (four games), Jusuf Nurkic (three games) and P.J. Washington (one game).

It was been a trying week for both teams. The Rockets have now lost two consecutive games, and their Friday defeat at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves came on an Anthony Edwards 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining. The Heat, meanwhile, are dealing with trade rumors involving star wing Jimmy Butler that got so loud team president Pat Riley had to come out and say publicly that the Heat would not move him. Combine that with an extremely physical game on Sunday and tempers simply boiled over. Now both the Heat and Rockets are paying the price.

In a heated matchup between the Miami Heat and the Houston Rockets on Sunday, tensions boiled over resulting in suspensions and fines for several players. Amen Thompson and Terry Rozier were among those suspended for their roles in the altercation.

The incident occurred during the second quarter of the game, when Thompson and Rozier got into a physical altercation after a hard foul. Both players had to be restrained by teammates and officials before being ejected from the game.

In addition to the suspensions of Thompson and Rozier, several other players from both teams were fined for their involvement in the scuffle. The NBA released a statement condemning the actions of the players and emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship and respect on the court.

The Heat and Rockets are both expected to face disciplinary action from the league as a result of the incident. Fans are eager to see how the teams will respond and if there will be any lingering animosity between the players moving forward.

Overall, the fight serves as a reminder of the intensity and competitiveness of NBA games, but also highlights the need for players to control their emotions and conduct themselves in a professional manner. Let’s hope that all parties involved can learn from this incident and move forward in a positive and respectful manner.

The NBA is handing down punishments against four players and one coach after the fight that erupted on Sunday between the Houston Rockets and Miami Heat. The on-court brawl ended with six people getting ejected in the final seconds of the Heat’s 104-100 win.

The league announced the punishments through a news release Tuesday.

Rockets forward Amen Thompson, whose actions sparked the fight, has been suspended for two games without pay, while Heat guard Terry Rozier has been suspended for one game. Rockets guard Jalen Green has been fined $35,000, and Heat guard Tyler Herro, who was involved in the initial exchange with Thompson, was fined $25,000.

The NBA also fined Rockets head coach Ime Udoka $50,000, with the league citing “verbal abuse of a game official” and saying that Udoka did not leave in a timely manner after being ejected. Rockets assistant coach Ben Sullivan, who was also ejected from the game, did not get fined.

Additionally, Rockets guard Fred VanVleet was fined $35,000 for an unrelated incident earlier in the game. VanVleet was ejected 10 seconds before the fight after making “reckless contact” with a referee.

The fight began with an altercation between Thompson and Herro, with 35.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter. As the two players bumped into each other, Thompson suddenly got into Herro’s face and grabbed at his jersey, throwing him down to the floor. The incident sparked a full-on brawl, with both teams swarming the two players. It took assistant coaches, staff members and even arena security to diffuse the situation.

It is unclear what exactly led to Thompson’s actions, but the result was a chaotic, bench-clearing brawl that only escalated. The four players — Thompson, Green, Rozier and Herro — and two Rockets coaches were given technical fouls and ejected from the game. When play eventually resumed, the Heat held on for the final 30 seconds to get the four-point win.

With the punishment, Thompson will miss the Rockets’ matchups against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday and Boston Celtics on Friday. Rozier will miss the Heat’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday.

The NBA has officially handed down punishments for the heated altercation between Miami Heat’s Amen Thompson and Houston Rockets’ Terry Rozier during their recent game. Both players have been suspended for their roles in the brawl, with Thompson receiving a one-game suspension and Rozier receiving a two-game suspension.

The incident occurred in the fourth quarter of the game, when tensions between the two players escalated and led to a physical altercation. Both players were ejected from the game, and now they will have to serve their suspensions as a result of their actions.

This serves as a reminder that fighting has no place in the game of basketball, and the NBA will not tolerate any form of violence on the court. Hopefully, both players will learn from this experience and come back stronger and more disciplined in the future.

  • Rockets’ Amen Thompson, Heat’s Terry Rozier suspended for fight

Rockets’ Amen Thompson, Heat’s Terry Rozier suspended for fight

MIAMI — The NBA has suspended Houston’s Amen Thompson for two games and Miami’s Terry Rozier for one game over their roles in a skirmish in the final moments of the RocketsHeat game Sunday night.

The league also handed out $145,000 in fines Tuesday from that contest. Houston coach Ime Udoka was fined $50,000 for verbally abusing a game official and not leaving the court in a timely manner, while the Rockets’ Jalen Green was fined $35,000 and Miami’s Tyler Herro was fined $25,000 for their roles in the fight.

And from a separate incident just before the dustup, Houston’s Fred VanVleet was fined $35,000 for making contact with referee Marc Davis.

Because of the suspensions, Rozier will lose about $143,242 in salary and Thompson will lose about $127,586.

It was a wild final minute of the game, with seven ejections — VanVleet, Thompson, Rozier, Udoka, Houston assistant coach Ben Sullivan, Green and Herro — taking place. VanVleet was the first to go, getting thrown out for making contact with Davis following a five-second call being assessed against the Rockets.

And a few seconds later, things boiled over. Thompson threw Herro to the court after they exchanged words, Rozier entered the fray immediately afterward and plenty of players from both teams engaged in pushing, shoving and yelling.

Herro led all scorers with 27 points and added nine assists and six rebounds and said after the game that he believed that frustrated Thompson.

“Guess that’s what’s happens when someone’s scoring, throwing dimes, doing the whole thing,” Herro said. “I’d get mad, too.”

Miami wound up winning 104-100, after a late 19-5 run by the Heat helped them escape from what was a seven-point deficit with seven minutes left. Houston led by as many as 12 points midway through the third quarter.

“I think they lost control of their feelings when the game started to turn a little bit in our direction,” Herro said Tuesday. “And then obviously the ejection of VanVleet, you heard some words from their sideline towards the refs. They were definitely frustrated.”

Herro said that he got a bruise near one of his hips from the fall to the ground, but that he expects to play Wednesday against the Pelicans.

The NBA has announced that Houston Rockets forward Amen Thompson and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier have been suspended for their involvement in a physical altercation during last night’s game.

Thompson and Rozier were both ejected from the game after getting into a heated exchange that quickly escalated into a shoving match. The league reviewed the incident and determined that both players violated the NBA’s rules on fighting and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Thompson has been suspended for two games, while Rozier will sit out one game. Both players have issued statements apologizing for their actions and expressing regret for letting their emotions get the best of them.

The Rockets and Heat will now be without key players as they continue their push for a playoff spot. Fans and analysts alike are already speculating on how these suspensions will impact their teams’ chances in the postseason.

It serves as a reminder that emotions can run high in the heat of competition, but players must always strive to maintain their composure and respect the rules of the game. Let’s hope that Thompson and Rozier learn from this incident and come back stronger and more disciplined players in the future.
