  • Chicago airport news: American Airlines plane strikes United tug at O’Hare International Airport, driver critically injured: CPD


    CHICAGO (WLS) — The driver of an aircraft tug was critically injured when the vehicle flipped over after colliding with an airplane Saturday at O’Hare Airport.

    The crash happened around 6:58 p.m. in the 0-100 block of West Twya Street at O’Hare, Chicago police said.

    A United Airlines tug came into contact with the wing of an aircraft as it attempted to cross the taxiway, officials said. American Airlines confirms it was one of their aircraft, an Air Wisconsin flight that had just landed in Chicago from Kalamazoo, Michigan.

    The driver of the tug was pinned under the vehicle when it flipped over due to the collision.

    The driver, a 64-year-old man, was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition with injuries to his head and lower body, but he was stabilized, Chicago police said.

    The accident delayed passengers from getting off the plane for a bit, no injuries were reported on the plane. Officials also said there were no significant impact to airport operations.

    The Chicago Department of Aviation released the following statement:

    “At approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, a tug vehicle made contact with Air Wisconsin Flight 6181 at O’Hare International Airport. No injuries were reported on the plane and passengers were transported to the terminal. There was no significant impact on airport operations.”

    American Airlines issued the following statement:

    “After safely landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), American Eagle flight 6181, operated by Air Wisconsin from Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport (AZO) to ORD, came into contact with a tug on an active taxiway. Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident.”

    United Airlines issued the following statement:

    “On Saturday evening, a United tug at O’Hare made contact with another airline’s aircraft while it was taxiing. The United employee was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and we are ensuring he receives any necessary support and care.”

  • Argentina qualifies for second round of U-20 South American Championship


    The Argentine national team has qualified for the U-20 South American Championship second round with a game to spare.

    Coached by Diego Placente, Argentina still has to face Ecuador in its final first-round matchup but is already guaranteed to advance after Brazil narrowly defeated the Ecuadorian side 3-2.

    The Albiceleste is currently the group B leader with seven points, after routing Brazil 6-0 last Friday, earning a tight 1-0 win against Bolivia on Tuesday and managing a 1-1 tie withColombia in between.

    With the tournament divided into five-team groups, each team was awarded an off day, and Argentina’s fell on Thursday. Thanks to Brazil’s victory, Ecuador can no longer overtake the Albiceleste in the group stage standings.

    Argentina will now play Ecuador on Saturday with a chance to clinch the group’s top spot. Brazil could lend another helping hand when it faces Colombia, which has also tallied seven points. Placente’s team can finish first if it wins its final match and the Verdeamarelha defeats or draws against the Cafeteros.

    In Group A, three teams secured their qualification on Wednesday. Uruguay, which leads with 9 points, beat Peru 2-0, while Paraguay, second with 6, won 1-0 against Venezuela. Chile, which also has six points, secured a spot in the next round as well. 

    The six teams — Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile — will now face each other in a second group stage. Because Chile will be hosting the under-20 World Cup, the top four teams will qualify, with La Rioja guaranteed a fifth spot. That tournament will be held from September 20 to October 16.

    Argentina is set to play Ecuador on Saturday at 6 p.m. Argentina time, with Brazil matching up against Colombia simultaneously. The second phase of the South American Championship begins on February 4 and will continue until February 16.

    Military aircraft collisions raise questions about training and equipment, expert says

    U.S. military helicopter crashes like the one that took down a commercial American Airlines flight over the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday night are very rare, but there has been an uptick in these incidents in recent years, according to military statistics and an aviation expert.

    A total of 64 people, including passengers and flight crew members, were aboard AA Flight 5342 from Wichita to Reagan National Airport (DCA). Three soldiers were conducting a training operation on the Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk that came from Fort Belvoir in Virginia. 

    “It’s concerning, certainly, the number of incidents that there have been,” Timothy Loranger, an aviation attorney at Wisner Baum and a Marine Corps veteran, told Fox News Digital. “But if you compare it to the thousands and thousands of hours of flights that occur without any incident … that’s all very good.”

    The collision has sparked questions about how such a devastating accident could happen in one of the most tightly controlled airspaces in the country and the world. The last significant fatal commercial crash happened in 2009, when a Continental Airlines flight crashed into a house in Buffalo, New York, killing 49 people. 

    “Is there something that we can point to? Training? Is the budget of the military sufficient to make sure that pilots and the crew have enough training and experience in order to fly those aircraft?” Loranger said. “Those are the kinds of questions that have to be asked. If it’s a problem with the aircraft itself, a mechanical issue, what is that? Is it a design issue? Is it a manufacturing issue? Is it a maintenance issue?”

    Military helicopter crashes, while uncommon, have been occurring more frequently over the last year, according to Army data.



    On Tuesday, authorities announced that the voice and data recorders from the American Airlines plane that crashed in Washington, DC have been recovered. The recorders, also known as “black boxes,” were found by search teams combing through the wreckage of the plane.

    These crucial devices will provide investigators with valuable information about what led to the tragic crash that claimed the lives of all 176 passengers and crew members on board. The data recorder will reveal details about the plane’s performance and flight path, while the voice recorder will capture conversations between the pilots and any other sounds in the cockpit.

    The recovery of these recorders is a significant step in the investigation into the cause of the crash. Authorities have not yet released any details about what may have caused the plane to go down, but the data from the recorders will be instrumental in piecing together what happened in the moments leading up to the disaster.
