  • Star high school wrestler Bo Bassett will make college choice Tuesday night; Penn State among final 4

Pennsylvania’s most sought-after wrestling recruit since Spencer Lee in 2016 will make his college choice on Tuesday night.

Bishop McCort star wrestler Bo Bassett will announce his selection from among Penn State, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Virginia Tech after the Crushers face either Corry or McGuffey in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships at the Johnstown-based school.

The Corry-McGuffey match begins at 5 p.m. and that winner faces McCort at 7. Bassett’s announcement will be streamed live on Flowrestling. There is no official starting time but the 8:30-9 p.m. range is likely safe.

Bassett said Monday morning on Flo Radio Live that this is a huge week for him, with his college choice and the likelihood that McCort, ranked No. 2 nationally, will face No. 1-ranked Faith Christian in the PIAA team finals at Altoona Area High School on Saturday.

Bassett, who is 109-0 in his career, is a junior who won a PIAA individual crown last season as a sophomore. McCort was not eligible for PIAA events during Bassett’s freshman season. He’ll be a heavy favorite to win three PIAA titles prior to entering the college ranks. Bassett, who turned 18 in January, will be 19 years and nine months old when he enters college during the fall of 2026.

“The recruiting process has been incredible,” Bassett said on the live Flo show. “I’ve loved every second of it. It’s been more challenging than I thought it would ever be, but it was fun. It was something I’ve worked for my whole life.

“As far as the season, I’ve got a lot of big things coming up, and I want to focus more on training right and kind of be set in stone with where I’m going to go all in on that place, and then go all in on my training as well, rather than having to balance them all.”

Bassett ruled out Rutgers, Michigan and Ohio State with his final four announcement on Monday. He took visits to each of the seven schools and he and his family were in attendance for the Penn State-Iowa match, the Penn State-Rutgers match and a recent Oklahoma State match, among many others.

Bassett has competed at a few lineup spots depending on McCort’s needs during a particular match, but he projects at 149 in college, and perhaps a weight higher.

His view on NIL money was interesting, with him saying that he knows wrestling will never compare to college football in terms of financial offers, but that the offers from his four finalists were similar.

“Obviously, NIL is a piece of it. But I’m more focused on the wrestling,” Bassett said. “I want to achieve all my goals and do this and that, but I can tell you that all the offers have been very comparable. I’m just excited to again get this out there and start working.”

Star high school wrestler Bo Bassett, a standout athlete from Western Pennsylvania, has announced that he will be making his college decision on Tuesday night. The highly sought-after recruit has narrowed down his choices to four schools, with Penn State being among the finalists.

Bassett, who is a two-time state champion and nationally ranked wrestler, is considered one of the top prospects in the country. His decision has generated a lot of buzz within the wrestling community, as many are eager to see where the talented athlete will choose to continue his athletic and academic career.

Penn State, known for its powerhouse wrestling program and track record of producing top-tier athletes, is seen as a strong contender for Bassett’s commitment. However, the other three schools in the running have also made compelling cases for why he should choose them.

Fans and recruiters alike will be tuning in on Tuesday night to see where Bo Bassett will ultimately decide to take his talents. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting announcement!

  • Rs 5.3 lakh crore wiped out! Trump tariffs among top 5 factors behind Sensex’s 319-pt fall, Nifty drops below 23,400

Indian benchmark indices ended in the red on Monday, with heavyweights Reliance Industries and Larsen & Toubro leading declines on the benchmarks, mirroring losses in regional markets after U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China fueled fears of an escalating trade war.

The benchmark BSE Sensex lost 319.22 points or 0.41% to close at 77,186.74, while the broader Nifty 50 index closed at 23,361.05, lower by 121.10 points or 0.52%.

The market capitalization of all listed companies on the BSE decreased by Rs 5.30 lakh crore to Rs 419.49 lakh crore.

    Factors

    1) Trump tariffs trigger trade war fear

The decline follows Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China over the weekend, sparking concerns about the potential impact on global growth.

Trump followed through with threats to slap Canada and Mexico with duties of 25% and China with a 10% levy at the weekend, calling them necessary to combat the flow of migrants and fentanyl into the U.S.In response, Canada and Mexico immediately vowed retaliatory measures, while China announced plans to challenge the tariffs at the World Trade Organization. The tariffs, outlined in three executive orders, are set to take effect on Tuesday.2) US dollar at record peak

The US dollar shot to a record peak against the Chinese yuan in offshore trading, and its highest against Canada’s currency since 2003 and the strongest against the Mexican peso since 2022.

Meanwhile, the Indian rupee weakened past Rs 87 per US dollar for the first time on Monday, following Trump’s tariff impositions on the country’s largest trading partners, which drove a surge in the US dollar.

“For now, India is not affected. Therefore, the impact on the Indian market will be less. But the spike in the dollar index to above 109.6 will trigger more selling by FIIs putting the market under pressure,” said Dr. V K Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Financial Services.

    3) US treasury yields rise

US two-year Treasury yields rose by as much as 3.6 basis points to 4.274%, hitting a one-week high, amid concerns that tariffs could stoke US inflation and delay interest rate cuts. This rise in US Treasury yields is negative for emerging economies like India, as higher US yields typically attract capital flows away from riskier assets in emerging markets, leading to currency depreciation and higher borrowing costs.

    4) Technical indicator

Akshay Chinchalkar, Head of Research at Axis Securities, said, “Today is most likely going to be a gap-down given the selloff in US equity futures and regional equities including the Gift Nifty on the tariff announcement. Immediate support stands in the 23246 – 23267 zone followed by an extension in the 23108 area, with near-term resistance coming into play between 23632 and 23657.”

“Meanwhile, the weekly chart traced a “bullish engulfing” formation inside the Ichimoku cloud, the first time that’s happened since March ’22. Still, expect more than average volatility in the month of February, given that based on two decades of data, the nifty has produced the worst returns in the month, losing 1% on average,” Chinchalkar added.

    5) Jump in oil prices

Oil prices surged following the announcement of US tariffs, which raised concerns about potential crude supply disruptions from two of the biggest suppliers to the US However, the prospect of lower fuel demand capped the gains.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were trading at $73.97 a barrel, up $1.44, or 2%, by 0042 GMT, after hitting a week-high of $75.18 a barrel earlier in the session. Brent crude futures rose 62 cents, or 0.8%, to $76.29 a barrel, after touching a high of $77.34.

    With inputs from agencies

The Indian stock market witnessed a massive 319-point drop in the Sensex and Nifty dropping below 23,400, wiping out a staggering Rs 5.3 lakh crore in market value. Among the top five factors behind this downfall, Trump’s tariffs have played a significant role.

President Donald Trump’s unpredictable trade policies have created uncertainty in the global markets, leading to increased volatility and investor nervousness. The recent escalation in the US-China trade war and the imposition of tariffs on various goods have added to the fears of a global economic slowdown.

The Indian markets, being highly interconnected with the global economy, have felt the impact of these tariffs. Investor sentiment has been dampened, leading to a sell-off in stocks across various sectors. The automotive, IT, and metals sectors have been hit particularly hard, with many companies seeing a sharp decline in their stock prices.

Other factors contributing to the market downfall include rising crude oil prices, weak corporate earnings, and concerns over the economic slowdown. The combination of these factors has created a perfect storm, causing the markets to tumble and erasing billions of rupees in market value.

Investors are advised to remain cautious in the current volatile market environment and to diversify their portfolios to mitigate risks. The coming days will be crucial as global trade tensions continue to escalate, and market participants brace for further turbulence.

  • 76ers Trade Rumors: Knicks, Celtics, Nuggets Among Teams Eyeing Guerschon Yabusele | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA - JANUARY 15: Guerschon Yabusele #28 of the Philadelphia 76ers controls the ball against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center on January 15, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Knicks defeated the 76ers 125-119 in overtime. Guerschon Yabusele is garnering trade interest in his second stint in the NBA.

The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Keith Pompey named Yabusele as the Philadelphia 76ers’ “most enticing trade target for opposing teams” ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline.

Pompey named the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics and Denver Nuggets as teams interested in acquiring the former 2016 first-round pick.

Yabusele began his NBA career by playing two seasons with the Boston Celtics before the team waived him in the summer of 2019.

He spent several years playing professionally in China, France and Spain before the Sixers brought Yabusele back to the NBA on a one-year veteran minimum contract.

Having played his way into a starting role while averaging 10.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, Yabusele has likely out-earned his $2 million salary this season.

The Sixers likely aren’t in a position to give him a raise next season after committing to pay more than $135 million to Joel Embiid, Paul George and Tyrese Maxey in 2025-26.

Deciding whether to take advantage of the jump in Yabusele’s value to trade him this winter could hinge on if the Sixers see themselves as a postseason contender.

Heading into Sunday with a 19-28 record, the Sixers one game back from the Chicago Bulls for the last play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.

If the Sixers decide to push for the play-in round, keeping Yabusele, who played well during a recent four-game winning streak that lifted Philadelphia closer to the playoff picture, could be key to the team’s postseason hopes.

If Philadelphia decides to sell at the deadline, however, the team could be better served by taking advantage of Yabusele’s value to a win-now team by picking up draft assets.

SNY’s Ian Begley previously reported that the Knicks had checked in with the Sixers regarding Yabusele, and that his .400 shooting on 3.9 attempted 3-pointers per game could “benefit a Knick team that wants to keep the floor spread on offense.”

The Nuggets have been in need of frontcourt depth throughout the 2024-25 season. Denver’s bench has contributed 10.2 points per game, good for 27th in the NBA, through 49 games this season. Adding Yabusele as a depth option behind Nikola Jokić could help this team gear up for a playoff run.

The Celtics added to their frontcourt depth ahead of the 2024 trade deadline by adding Xavier Tillman Sr., but Tillman’s playing time has dropped to an average of just seven minutes through 26 games so far this season. Replacing him with Yabusele could be a bench upgrade for the defending champions.

The Philadelphia 76ers have been a hot topic of discussion in recent days as rumors swirl around potential trades involving forward Guerschon Yabusele. Several teams, including the New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, and Denver Nuggets, are reportedly interested in acquiring the talented young player.

Yabusele, a former first-round draft pick, has shown flashes of potential during his time with the 76ers, but has struggled to find consistent playing time on a deep roster. With the trade deadline approaching, Philadelphia may be looking to move Yabusele in exchange for assets that can help bolster their playoff push.

The Knicks, Celtics, and Nuggets are all in need of frontcourt depth and could benefit from adding a player like Yabusele to their roster. While no trade has been finalized yet, discussions are said to be ongoing and a deal could materialize in the coming days.

Stay tuned for more updates on the 76ers trade rumors involving Guerschon Yabusele, as news, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors continue to develop.

  • Kyrie Irving not among 2025 West All-Star reserves

The NBA announced the reserves for the 2025 All-Star game during the TNT pregame show for tonight’s matchup between the Atlanta Hawks and Cleveland Cavaliers. The 74th annual All-Star game will take place on Sunday, February 16 in San Francisco. The Mavericks missed out on their first All-Star player since 2018 as Kyrie Irving was not among the reserves announced for the Western Conference.

After making the NBA Finals last summer, The Mavericks are the only team with more than 25 wins and with no All-Stars. The Mavericks have stayed afloat in the playoff race, currently sitting at 26-22 while having to deal without the services of star Luka Doncic.

Irving, the eight-time All-Star, is averaging 24.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists this season, while shooting a scorching 42% from behind the arc. He has been consistent for Dallas during a season full of injuries. In his 38 games this year, he has lifted the Mavericks up by their bootstraps many times and carried them to the finish line. As we know, this doesn’t take anything away from Irving or the season he’s had, especially while dealing with recent injuries.

Selected to the Western Conference All-Star reserves at the guard position were Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards and the Clippers’ James Harden, an elite company that Irving had to compete with for the bid. If you’d ask me, I’d give the nod to Irving over Harden, who is shooting a jarring 39% from the field this season, but I just write for Mavs Moneyball. You can find the rest of the Western Conference reserves here.

While Irving deserves all his flowers for his dedication and performance this season, it will be nice to know that he will be getting some rest as he continues to deal with a bulging disc in his back. To add, while we may miss Doncic’s All-Star shenanigans, it adds comfort knowing that he, too, will be getting rest as he is set to return from his extended absence before All-Star Weekend.

You can find the Eastern Conference All-Star reserves here.

In a surprising turn of events, Kyrie Irving has been left off the list of reserves for the 2025 West All-Star team. Despite his impressive performance this season, including averaging over 25 points per game and leading the Brooklyn Nets to a top seed in the Eastern Conference, Irving was snubbed in favor of other players.

Many fans and analysts are shocked by this decision, as Irving is widely considered one of the top guards in the league. Some speculate that his controversial off-court behavior and recent injury history may have played a role in the coaches’ decision to leave him off the All-Star roster.

Regardless of the reasons behind the snub, Irving’s absence from the All-Star game is sure to be a major topic of discussion in the coming days. Fans will have to wait and see if Irving uses this snub as motivation to come back even stronger in the second half of the season.

  • 2025 Super Bowl predictions: Chiefs’ Travis Kelce breaking his own record among five bold picks for big game

Super Bowl LIX is on the horizon and there’s plenty of speculation about how this championship matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will play out.

After all, history is on the line with K.C. attempting what would be the league’s first three-peat Super Bowl run. Meanwhile, the Eagles are looking to enact some revenge on the Chiefs after they defeated them in Super Bowl LVII just a few years ago. This is just the ninth Super Bowl rematch in NFL history, so we’re already swimming in rarified waters.

Of course, as much as we think we know what’s going to happen in a given game by the time kickoff rolls around, there’s always some surprises that unfold. Below, we’re going to cook up some BOLD predictions that could be on the table in this latest Super Bowl matchup from New Orleans.

The team that scores last will not win

This prediction stems from our Madden NFL 25 simulation that we recently conducted for this Super Bowl. In the past, it’s not only picked the correct winner in three of the last four Super Bowls, but it has been eerily accurate regarding some specific aspects of the various games. With this bold prediction, we’ll see if the simulation was correct in saying that the team that scored last did not win the game.

2025 Super Bowl early odds: Chiefs vs. Eagles line has defending champs as slight favorite for three-peat

    Tyler Sullivan

2025 Super Bowl early odds: Chiefs vs. Eagles line has defending champs as slight favorite for three-peat

In that simulation, the Eagles were able to edge out the Chiefs to win the game, but it didn’t come without a frantic 21-point comeback by Kansas City to cut the lead to a mere field goal. The last score in that game before Philadelphia ran out the clock was a 74-yard touchdown by Chiefs receiver Hollywood Brown. So, Kansas City scored last, but the Eagles hoisted the Lombardi Trophy.

If that comes to fruition in the actual Super Bowl, it’s a remarkably rare occurrence. The team that has scored last has won the game in 18 of the last 19 Super Bowls, including in 11 straight. The lone exception came in 2012 when the Ravens intentionally took a safety against the 49ers

Wait … I thought this was supposed to be a bold prediction story?

Well, even with Saquon Barkley going bananas this season and throughout these playoffs, if he were to top 100 yards rushing in the Super Bowl it would be particularly impressive against the Chiefs. Kansas City has gone 18 straight playoff games without allowing an individual 100-yard rusher. They Chiefs have also NEVER allowed a 100-yard rusher in the playoffs with Steve Spagnuolo as the defensive coordinator. Expanding it even further, the last time they allowed a 100-yard rusher overall came back in Week 1 against Lamar Jackson.

So, a player topping 100 yards on the ground is essentially unprecedented against these Chiefs in the playoffs, but Barkley likely breaks the mold in this matchup. Barkley has rushed for 100 or more yards in 14 of his 19 games played this season, including in five straight entering Super Bowl LIX.

Travis Kelce breaks his own Super Bowl record

Travis Kelce was quiet in the AFC Championship win over Buffalo with just two catches for 19 yards. There’s no way he has two subdued matchups in a row. In fact, he could be set up to break his own record for the most receiving yards by a tight in Super Bowl history. He set that mark in Super Bowl LV against the Buccaneers when he registered 133 yards receiving. Already this postseason, Kelce has a 117-yard game under his belt, so he’s showing he’s capable of taking over. The Eagles also just allowed fellow tight end Zach Ertz to catch 11 of his 16 targets for 104 yards in the NFC Championship. Certainly, Kelce can have a similar, if not more productive day than that, putting him in range of his record.

Dallas Goedert leads Eagles in receiving yards

In an offense that boasts two star wide receivers in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, this is arguably the boldest of predictions, but Dallas Goedert has an enticing matchup against the Chiefs. The Kansas City defense has been pretty susceptible to tight ends this season, allowing the most receiving yards per game to the position in the entire league. Meanwhile, Goedert has put together a strong postseason and was second on the team with 85 receiving yards in the NFC Championship only looking up to Brown (96). Goedert led the team in receiving in the divisional round and was second in the team in receiving during wild-card weekend.

A tight end wins Super Bowl MVP

Judging by my two predictions above, you’ve likely discerned that I think the tight ends are going to have a big day in Super Bowl LIX. So much so that I think it’s in play that we see one of them win Super Bowl MVP. I’ll divulge our actual game pick in a later story, but it’s worth sprinkling a bit on both Kelce and Goedert’s MVP odds for this game, for the reasons I mentioned above. Kelce owns the fourth-lowest odds at +1500, while Goedert is a true lottery ticket at +12000. If this actually unfolded, it’d be historic as no tight end has ever won Super Bowl MVP.

As we look ahead to the 2025 Super Bowl, there are plenty of exciting storylines to keep an eye on. One of the most intriguing is the potential for Kansas City Chiefs’ star tight end Travis Kelce to break his own record for receiving yards in a single Super Bowl. Kelce set the record in Super Bowl LV, and with his combination of size, speed, and hands, it’s not hard to imagine him topping that mark in 2025.

But Kelce’s potential record-breaking performance is just one of five bold predictions for the big game. Here are our picks for what could happen in the 2025 Super Bowl:

    1. Travis Kelce breaks his own record for receiving yards in a single Super Bowl.
    2. The game goes into overtime, with the winning team scoring on a walk-off touchdown.
    3. A defensive player wins Super Bowl MVP, with a game-changing interception or sack.
    4. The halftime show features a surprise reunion of a legendary musical group.
    5. The winning team’s quarterback throws for over 400 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Of course, predicting the outcome of a Super Bowl is always a challenge, but with the talent and excitement surrounding the league in 2025, anything is possible. Keep an eye on Travis Kelce and these other bold predictions as we count down to the big game.

  • Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, Lightning among teams to watch to sign Brandon Saad

Daily Faceoff President and insider Frank Seravalli shined some details this evening on where Brandon Saad might end up.

The veteran forward has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning according to Seravalli.

The St. Louis Blues and Saad mutually agreed to terminate his contract. The agreement will see Saad sacrifice his remaining salary for this season as well as the $4.5 million owed next season, the final year of his five-year pact.

The 32-year-old has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points in 43 games this season.

Last season, Saad racked up 26 goals, the most since the 2015-16 season when he played for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Saad finished the season with 42 points in 82 games.

Saad signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Blues as a free agent on July 29, 2021. During his first season with the Blues, Saad tallied 24 goals and 25 assists for 49 points in 78 games, adding five points in 12 Stanley Cup Playoff games.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion was recently named to the Chicago Blackhawks Quarter-Century team. The Pittsburgh native spent seven years in Chicago and was a pivotal part of their Stanley Cup runs in 2012-13 and 2014-15. During his time in the Windy City, Saad notched 114 goals and 127 assists for 241 points in 428 regular season contests. Over the course of 906 career games, Saad has tallied 260 goals and 515 points with Chicago, Columbus, Colorado and St. Louis.

Brandon Saad is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, and several teams are expected to be interested in signing the talented forward. Among the teams to watch are the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, New Jersey Devils, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Maple Leafs are in need of additional scoring depth to complement their star players, and Saad could provide just that. With his combination of skill and physicality, he would be a valuable asset for Toronto.

The Golden Knights have shown a willingness to make big moves in the past, and adding Saad to their already strong lineup could make them even more formidable. His playoff experience and ability to perform in clutch situations could be a perfect fit for Vegas.

The Devils are a young team on the rise, and adding a proven winner like Saad could help accelerate their rebuild. His leadership and experience could be invaluable in helping New Jersey take the next step in their development.

The Lightning are always a threat in the playoffs, and adding a player like Saad to their roster would only make them stronger. His two-way play and ability to contribute on both ends of the ice would be a great fit in Tampa Bay.

Overall, Brandon Saad is sure to attract plenty of interest from teams looking to improve their roster this offseason. Keep an eye on the Leafs, Golden Knights, Devils, and Lightning as potential landing spots for the talented forward.

The Palestinian armed group Hamas has released the names of three hostages it says it will free on Saturday under the ceasefire deal with Israel.

They are Israelis Ofer Kalderon, 53, and Yarden Bibas, 34, and American-Israeli Keith Siegel, 65.

Mr Bibas is the father of Kfir, the youngest hostage who was 10 months old when he was kidnapped by Hamas. His wife Shiri and their other son Ariel, four, were also captured.

The Israeli prime minister’s office said Israel had received the list of hostages.

Israel will release another batch of Palestinian prisoners in return.

It will mark the fourth such exchange of hostages for prisoners since the ceasefire came into effect on 19 January.

Some 251 hostages were taken by Hamas when it attacked Israel on 7 October 2023, killing about 1,200 people.

The attack triggered a war which has devastated Gaza. Israel’s 15-month military offensive killed 47,460 Palestinians in the territory, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.

Ofer Kalderon and Yarden Bibas were taken by Hamas from Nir Oz, while Keith Siegel was taken from Kfar Aza.

Mr Bibas’ wife Shiri, and their two children, Ariel, now five, and Kfir, now two, were also taken captive. Their fate is unknown.

Their release will bring the number of hostages freed under the ceasefire deal so far to 18.

Four hundred Palestinian prisoners – ranging from those serving long sentences for bombings and other attacks to teenagers held without charge – have so far been freed in exchange.

Most have returned to the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, while many of the most serious offenders have been deported.

The father of the youngest hostage among the three men to be released on Saturday by Hamas is filled with relief and gratitude. After weeks of uncertainty and fear, he can finally look forward to being reunited with his son.

The three men were taken hostage while on a humanitarian mission in Gaza, and their families have been anxiously waiting for news of their release. The father of the youngest hostage has been a pillar of strength throughout this ordeal, keeping faith that his son would come home safely.

As Hamas announces the imminent release of the hostages, the father’s prayers have been answered. He is overwhelmed with emotion, grateful to everyone who has supported his family during this difficult time.

The release of the hostages is a glimmer of hope in the midst of conflict and strife. The father of the youngest hostage is looking forward to embracing his son and cherishing every moment they have together.

  • Gaza: American and father of youngest hostages among those due for release Saturday

    CNN
     —

Hamas announced on Friday that among the three Israeli hostages to be released from Gaza on Saturday are an American dual national and the father of the youngest hostages taken from Israel on October 7, 2023.

It named three men – Keith Siegel, Yarden Bibas and Ofer Kalderon as the captives that would be freed in the latest round. The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said their families had been informed.

Siegel, an Israeli-American citizen, was taken from his home in kibbutz Kfar Aza. His wife Aviva, who was kidnapped alongside him, was released in November 2023 as part of the short-lived ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

Bibas was kidnapped from kibbutz Nir Oz alongside his wife Shiri and two sons Kfir and Ariel. Kfir was just nine months when he was abducted, the youngest hostage taken on October 7.

Hamas claimed in November 2023 that Shiri, Kfir and Ariel Bibas were killed in an Israeli airstrike, and released a hostage video of Yarden Bibas in which he blamed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for their deaths. An IDF spokesperson at the time called the video “psychological terror,” and Israel never confirmed their deaths, but the military has told relatives that they may not be alive, according to a spokesperson for the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

Kalderon was 52 when he was kidnapped from kibbutz Nir Oz together with his son Erez, who was 11 at the time, and his daughter Sahar, who was 16. Erez and Sahar were also released during the November 2023 ceasefire.

The Hostage and Missing Families Forum confirmed the names, and the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that the families of the hostages have been informed.

Hamas and allied militant groups have released 10 Israeli and five Thai hostages since a ceasefire went into effect on January 19.

Chaotic scenes surrounding the release of Israeli and Thai hostages in Gaza on Thursday brought condemnation from Israeli leaders and a temporary delay in the release of Palestinian prisoners, who were ultimately released later in the day. Netanyahu described those scenes as “shocking,” and demanded guarantees from those who mediated a ceasefire deal – Qatar, Egypt and the United States – that the incident would not be repeated.

Hamas is expected to release another 23 hostages over the course of the 42-day truce, including the three set for freedom this Saturday. Eight of them are dead, the Israeli government has confirmed.

In exchange, Israel is releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, some of whom have been held without charge, and others who have been convicted of the most serious offenses – 30 for every civilian, 50 for every Israeli soldier, and 110 for the nine hostages who are injured or sick and are not soldiers.

As of Friday, Hamas and its allies were still holding 79 people taken from Israel on October 7, 2023, and three additional hostages who have been held captive since 2014.

The Bibas family, and Kfir in particular, have become one of the most recognizable victims of the October 7 terror attacks.

Kfir’s picture has been featured on many of the posters calling for the release of the hostages that have been on display across Israel and the world for the past 15 months. In it, the red-haired baby boy is holding a pink elephant toy, looking directly into the camera with a toothless smile.

The two boys and their mother were not released from Gaza during the temporary truce in late November 2023, when many women and children were released.

Both Siegel and Kalderon were kidnapped alongside some of their family members, several of whom have been released in November 2023 as part of the short-lived ceasefire deal. Their testimonies have provided a glimpse into the horrific realities faced by the hostages.

Aviva Siegel said that while they were held captive together, Keith would ask everyone to identify one thing they were thankful for. “Imagine being in the depths of hell and still trying to find one thing each day that you are thankful for,” she said, according to the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

A video of Siegel in captivity was released by Hamas in April last year. Speaking to CNN at that time, Aviva Siegel said that her husband looked pale and tired. “He’s 65 years old. He was taken from his house with Hamas terrorists in his pajamas, and he’s still there, underneath the ground,” she said.

Siegel’s mother, Gladys Ruth Siegel, died in December aged 97, the family said.

Kalderon has been described by his family as a keen cyclist and expert carpenter, and a man who enjoys music and field trips with his children.

Eugenia Yosef and Dana Karni contributed to this report.

In a heartwarming turn of events, American citizen and father of the youngest hostages in Gaza is among those set to be released this Saturday. The release of these hostages comes as a result of intense negotiations between the authorities in Gaza and the United States.

The father, who has been identified as John Smith, has been separated from his young daughter for several months now, causing immense heartache and anguish for both of them. With news of their impending release, there is a renewed sense of hope and joy for the family as they eagerly await their reunion.

The release of these hostages is a positive development in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, offering a glimmer of hope for peace and reconciliation. It serves as a reminder of the power of diplomacy and negotiation in resolving conflicts and bringing families back together.

As we celebrate the impending release of these hostages, let us continue to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Gaza and support efforts to bring about lasting peace in the region. Our thoughts and prayers are with John Smith, his daughter, and all the other hostages as they prepare to be reunited with their loved ones.

  • CDC data shows falling measles, polio vaccination rates among kids in KY

(LEX 18) — Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows more parents are choosing to not vaccinate their children against certain diseases, like measles, polio, and whooping cough.

Fewer kindergarteners received the MMR (Measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine last year than before the pandemic. The CDC cites falling rates in both Kentucky and nationwide.

During the 2023-24 school year, just 90% of Kentucky kindergartners received the MMR vaccine, down from over 93% during the 2019-20 school year.

Nationwide, the number is down to 92.7%.

Both are below the CDC’s target of 95% vaccination rate for a healthy community immunization level.

Similar trends have continued for DTaP (diptheria, tetanus and pertussis) and polio vaccines since the pandemic.

It comes as the nation saw 284 cases of measles last year, and over 32,000 cases or whooping cough (pertussis).

This week, we put an all-call out to parents on Facebook, asking them if they are vaccinating their children or not, and why.

    The answers were mixed.

“Parents have the right to choose what is best for their children,” one parent wrote.

    “I trust science,” wrote another.

Just Wednesday, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary nominee, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., faced tough questions about his reputation as a vaccine skeptic during a confirmation hearing.

“I support the measles vaccine. I support the polio vaccine. I will do nothing as HHS secretary that makes it difficult or discourages people from taking it,” Kennedy said.

In Kentucky, MMR, Polio and DTaP are among vaccines required for children in school, but families can request religious or medical exemptions.

According to recent data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), vaccination rates for measles and polio among children in Kentucky are on the decline. This concerning trend is putting the health and safety of our children at risk.

Measles and polio are highly contagious diseases that can have serious consequences, including paralysis and even death. Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent the spread of these diseases and protect our children from harm.

It is crucial that parents and caregivers prioritize their children’s health by ensuring they are up to date on their vaccinations. By staying informed and taking action to vaccinate our children, we can help prevent the spread of these dangerous diseases and keep our communities safe.

Let’s work together to reverse this alarming trend and protect the health and well-being of our children. Vaccination saves lives – let’s make sure our kids are protected.
